Churchrow Tejas BBQ - Review - Crestview - Austin - The Infatuation

"Taking over the oldBlack Goldspace in Crestview, Churchrow is another barbecue joint, this time with the former pitmaster fromValentina’s. The menu is expected to focus on a similar Tex-Mex style of barbecue, with mesquite-smoked meats, brisket tacos, and nachos loaded with pulled pork. There’s also a full bar with beer, wine, and cocktails." - Nicolai McCrary

What a gem ! We sat at the bar and had a fantastic meal and great service. We started with the Chorizo Bean & dip . House chips and this dip are scrumptious. Highly recommend giving it a try. We ordered some pulled pork and ribs as well. Ribs are cooked to perfection ! We got some habanero mustard sauce to try with the pulled pork and that is a winning combo for sure. Nice selection of tap beers. Two N/A beer options. Fantastic Tequila selection. Several TVs inside and out. 3 outside seating areas. Play area for the kiddos . A nice sized dog run also. We felt very welcomed and are going back really soon !

Came here on a Sunday morning right about noon and there was no line. Even if there was a line, the food is absolutely worth the wait! (All great bbq places are going to have a line). The guacamole and chips were fresh and delicious. The barbacoa and fresh flour tortillas were delicious. Forgot to take a pic of the Real Deal Holyfield, however the brisket, egg, bean, potato, bacon and red salsa on a tortilla made for a delicious pairing! The patio was great to sit on and enjoy the great food! The service was also amazing and made the experience even better!

I can't believe we got to see Miguel himself! Very humble and welcoming man. Great food. Loved the dishes they served us. Tender meats and hand-made tortillas. My daughter and I loved the soft opening and will definitely be back again for his famous brisket for the grand opening this week!

Just tried Churchrow Tejas BBQ and it did not disappoint. We ordered the brisket, barbacoa, sausage, mac and cheese, and beans, and everything was really solid. The brisket was tender and flavorful, the barbacoa had a nice depth of taste, and the sausage was perfectly seasoned. The sides were just as good—the mac and cheese was creamy without being too heavy, and the beans had a nice smoky touch. The space feels warm and welcoming, with that casual, laid-back vibe that makes you want to linger over your meal. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy good food, and just soak in the friendly energy. If you’re in the mood for good BBQ with simple, honest flavors, this place is worth checking out.

I’ve been to this restaurant at least seven times since it opened in the past few weeks because I live down the street. The food is insanely good. I usually get a taco, usually the brisket or the Chachito pulled pork. Or I’ll order the nachos. The cocktails are so so good and on par with the best cocktail bars in town they have a great mezcal-forward cocktail menu, but the guys here know their stuff and can make you anything. I really like the house margarita (with mezcal), it’s super balanced not too sweet and there’s no nasty ingredients. It’s all fressshhh. And they just started serving a coconut-y blue frozen drink called the Mexican pipeline, basically a blue Hawaiian made with margarita instead of rum. And if it’s early, I’ll get the Michelada (because I’m not an animal 😆). Anyway, just go! And if you don’t want to wait in line, go during non-peak times! Avoid the weekend BBQ tourists by going at 2:30 vs noon. That’s what I do and I just walk right in. Pro tip: On weekends, you can park at the little private preschool across Woodrow.

A wonderful experience. The flour tortillas are amazing. For me it was great having Valentina’s flavor BBQ again. Everything was very good. No line and ordering was simple. Lots of parking.

Fantastic food and great service once you’re seated, just needs a few operational tweaks. We absolutely loved the food and the team once we were in the door. The bartenders were especially friendly and efficient, big shoutout to them. We ordered the empanadas, brisket, mac and cheese, and the Porky Pig sandwich: every single item was excellent. The flavors were rich, portions generous, and everything came out hot and fresh. The bbq here is truly something special. When you walk up, you can smell and see the smokers which is a huge plus. This place clearly takes pride in what comes out of the kitchen, and it shows. That said, a few small operational improvements could make the guest experience smoother: Post menus outside. A small basket or stand with menus near the entrance would make a big difference. When we arrived, there were seven people in line, and one guest understandably had several questions. If people can browse before reaching the counter, it would keep things moving. Streamline check-in and ordering. Instead of having guests wait in the high-traffic area near the desk, where you also have your consolidator getting food from the line out to customers, consider assigning numbers with a QR code so people can order and pay from their table. Guests could come to the bar for questions instead of blocking staff movement. Clarify drink service. It wasn’t fully clear how to get drinks or whether patio service was separate. We also weren't quite sure how to order more drinks or food. A simple sign or quick explanation at check-in would clear that up. Label BBQ sauces and better stock where guests claim things like napkins and utensils. The sauces on the counter weren’t marked (they were delicious though so huge plus), so we weren’t sure what we were trying. Simple labels would enhance the tasting experience. Provide more napkins and better flatware. For a $75 meal for two, getting three total plates to explore, (and - the food price is more than fair for the amazing quality you receive), it’d be great to have silverware instead of plastic, or at least compostable options. It elevates the whole meal. Clarify what sides or accoutrements come with entrées. Let diners know on the menu that items like tortillas or bread are included with certain dishes so they can plan sides accordingly. We got the brisket and I was pleasantly surprised I could get bread or tortillas. Also - DO NOT SLEEP on their tortillas they were amazing. Overall, we’ll definitely be back: the food and people were fantastic. Played great music too at just the right level. This place is really something special. With just a few small adjustments to the front-end experience, this place would be a flawless five-star stop.

I really wanted to like the food here, especially knowing the pitmaster’s background at Valentina’s BBQ — one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, today’s experience was disappointing. The fatty brisket was dry, lacking the rich, moist texture I was expecting, and even after asking twice to confirm that I was served the right cut, it just didn’t measure up. The beef rib also missed the mark — not bad, but far from great. The off-menu flour tortillas were delicious, even though they cost (an expensive IMHO) $1 each. I came in hoping for that same level of quality and flavor that made Valentina’s so memorable, but I left wishing the food had lived up to its potential. On top of that, the ordering system is unusual. You have to wait outside and order one person/party at a time inside , which sounds miserable if there’s very hot or very cold weather. Thankfully the weather this morning was nice.

Yelp
A. They have BBQ. B. The pitmaster was the former pitmaster at Valentina's. That is a very good sign. C. BBQ is only 1/6 of their menu. D. The non-BBQ items are knock your socks off. E. They do an insane sauteed sweetbreads. F. They do an equally insane steak salad. G. They have an extremely upscale bar. BBQ and primo de primo gin and tequila usually do not appear in the same establishment. H. The place ain't cheap. I. This is not the most upscale neighborhood in Austin. The neighbors on the north side of Anderson could never afford to eat here. About half of the neighbors on the south side of Anderson could never afford to eat here. J. The food is amazingly good. K. I hope they make it. Austin will be a better place if they survive.

Yelp
Former owner of Valentina's is on the pit. What an upgrade this spot is over the place that was previously located here. A great neighborhood gem. As word continues to grow, it will be painful to park and work through the long lines with one person taking orders. Brisket: 5 Ribs: 5 Smoked chicken skewers: 4 OG Sausage: 3 Corn: 4 Veggies: 3 Mexican rice : 3 (dry) Mac n Cheese: 3 I'm not a fan of lean brisket, but this place would be an exception. Meats are sold by the 1/2 lb. My preference would be by 1/4 lb as the 1/2 lb minimum makes me order too much food in one setting for one.

Yelp
I tried the brisket à la mexicana and el chilango. The el chilango was slow cooked and super flavorful. The beans were flavorful and awesome, tortillas were fresh and tasted homemade The decor is pretty similar to the previous tenant black and gold, but the new place has much better food. Lots of mmms and yum moans could be heard. Pro tip: Reading is fundamental and sweet bread is not bread at all! I tried the brisket à la mexicana and el chilango. Yelp
Day 1 @ Churchrow BBQ...spotted Churchrow in route to the gym. ChurchRow Tejas BBQ is the collaboration of Simon Madera, known for his successful business ventures of Taco Flats and La Holly, and Miguel Vidal, the former pitmaster of Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ. Their partnership goes back to their days as friends who met at St. Edward's University. They bonded over their shared love for their Tejano heritage and love of food. Apparently, Miguel, the pitmaster is known for his superb pitmaster skills at Valentina's and has amassed a strong following. Miguel greeted all guests, a nice touch and shared some of his BBQ history with us. The menu consists of starters, meats, sides, handhelds (tacos), sandwiches, platillos (plates), drinks and desserts. I like the unique names of the tacos (LaValentina, Tejanita, El Chico) and other menu items. I ordered the Tejania taco (chicken, roasted Pablo & red onion, pico, guacamole and tomatillo salsa) - the standout and El Chilango (thinly sliced sirloin steak, fresh cilantro and onion). Loved the homemade tortillas, tender well seasoned chicken and guacamole.., the tacos are so good!!!! Nothing like them in Austin... The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor picnic tables have umbrellas. Looking forward to coming back and exploring more menu items.

Yelp
Texas BBQ with a taco flair! The food is good, vibes are spot on, cocktail menu is elevated (especially for a BBQ spot), but the wait times were brutal. When I arrived there was only 1 person in front of me. I ordered 1 drink, taco, beans and fajita meat, which took over 35 minutes to arrive. I know they just opened, so I'm hoping they will make things more streamlined.

Yelp
All the way from Star Bar on West 6th, Churchrow is Pitmaster Miguel's Redemption Story. Another review mentioned the wait time (which wasn't my experience, but they're also not officially open yet). The spot is beautiful, the vibe is strong, the drink menu includes a good variety of beers and a sophisticated mezcal/tequila-forward drink menu. I had a perfect margarita from Chet in the "3-2-1", and my dream "bbq/fusion" taco in La Valentina: that homemade tortilla is a wonderful vessel for the balanced guac and some of the best brisket in the city. I don't expect to be able to walk in a without a wait once word is out. I'm so happy they're open, and this place is going to blow up.

Yelp
Welcome back to the game Miguel! We drove from Pflugerville to get a little taste of South Austin. These tacos were huge and packed full of the love it has always been made with. They are still hecho con amor.. I left with some of his seasonings as well for when I need a taste of home. This place is worth the money and I am already looking forward to the next time I visit. 10 out of 10....

Yelp
Stopped by Churchrow for lunch and gotta say " in-f**kencredible" ! The brisket was delicious, the pork ribs were perfect and to have homemade tortillas to compliment it seals the deal!

Yelp
Great food! Love the inside, the bar is super nice. We had the La Valentina tacos. Homemade tortillas and all! When you walk in you order, guy that helped us was really nice. We will be back for food and drinks next time.

Yelp
I have waited a couple of years to eat this style of BBQ again. The brisket was flavorful and moist as I remember. The OG sausage on point. The tampequena was new to me but homemade corn and flour tortillas...on one plate. Those tortillas would rival any of my abuela's on any given day. It was good to see Miguel in the smokehouse just like he was when I first met him. The anticipation is worth the wait. If you want fast BBQ then hit up a local chain or pick up a vacuum seal bag at Sam's. If you want good BBQ like your hefe or abuelo made on a Sunday afternoon, just know it won't be fast but it will be good. Homemade tortillas to order. So grab some queso and a beer and chill. Looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
We made it out to the soft opening of Churchrow Tejas BBQ, and it did not disappoint. The space is super cute, with a great looking bar and cozy seating inside and out. There's plenty of outdoor seating, which will be perfect once the weather cools down. Since it was a soft opening, it wasn't too crowded, so we were seated right away. Drinks came out quickly, and the food arrived in a good amount of time. Everything was delicious, especially the homemade tortillas. When they say "Tejas BBQ," they really mean it. It's the perfect blend of Texas-style barbecue with a Mexican twist. I usually don't go for brisket because it can feel too heavy, but theirs was amazing. It was tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. You can tell a lot of care goes into every dish. We ordered The Chilango, The Chuco and The Valentina and loved them so much that we ordered seconds!!! We even got to meet the owner, who was super friendly and shared a bit about his background, along with the pitmaster, Miguel, who clearly knows his craft. Will definitely be back and we'll be telling all our friends about this spot.

Yelp
Disappointing, my husband and I were really excited to try. I understand they just opened and there will be issues but I have to be honest here. We got the ribs, brisket, queso, and one of the tacos, I forgot the name. The one with fajita meat and peppers, and a guava frozen margarita. None of the food came out hot. It was warm and more toward the colder side of warm. My husband was really annoyed that the brisket did not come with bread. We did ask and they said they don't have bread, they have tortillas we could order. I get that it is texmex so I get the no bread thing but I do think if you are getting meat by the pound then it should come with some tortillas at least. Especially for the price. The flavor of the brisket was just okay. The taco was good. The queso and ribs were the best tasting. The guava margarita was not good.

Yelp
Came in for the soft opening and was absolutely blown away!! The meat, tortillas, beans and rice was amazing. I'm not a huge bbq guy but am a huge Churchrow guy. Thank you to the staff for the good food and making me feel welcome.

Yelp
The food was good. Definitely not close to what Valentina's was BUT still good. I'm going to wait n revisit in 6 months. The mollejas were phenomenal but had too much sauce (over powering) . Next time I'll order with sauce on the side. The slaw was killer! Fresh. Would have like brisket to be moister. Tortillas need work. Overall food still good but took some time to get out

Yelp
Giving ONE star is TOO GENEROUS!! I do not know where to start! Waiting an hour and 20 min to get our food in pieces- meaning our whole $143 order did not come all out together...even AFTER 1hr20min! (1lb fajitas, 1lb brisket, 2 pork ribs, ONE sausage, large rice, large beans, large Mac n chz 2-$3 Dp's) It was 12:15pm they opened up at 11am their specialty for Saturday-BEEF RIBS- already sold out! C'mon you know you're open for the whole damn day -make enough bbq like Terry Black's . I wanted corn in a cup- also sold out! Like WT?!? YOU RAN OUT OF CORN IN A CUP? We order 1# of fajitas- no fixings come with. No salsa, no tortillas - NOTHING!! Brisket didn't even come w/bread, onions-NOTHING- they didn't even have those condiments! Tortillas cost $1 EAXH... they took 30 min to get 4! The taste of the brisket, fajitas (more like a pound of grilled onions than actual fajitas) ' pork ribs had ZERO seasoning. No flavor - again NOTHING. Soda cans ($3) were hot- had to go back and ask for ice cups. (Had to wait at the bar to get serviced). Mac n cheese was NOT SMOKED MAC N CHZ as the menu stated! BLAND! Rice was almost fake- had a weird taste to it. Charro beans were decent-nothing to fart about. How dare they even ask for a tip when you pay ! Oh yah... ordering and waiting outside- whole difference way of ordering at a restaurant . Visualize- walk up to the door.... You have to wait outside the door b/c the person/party is at the other end of the door inside- putting in their order. Like literally on the other side. You can't even enter ! Also that passageway is used for the pit-masters to bring meat through. So it can be a cluster F$&@! Oh yah one of the owners- and pit master- is the former owner of Valentina's in Buda This place should be called NADA! B/c they had nothing - nada that was worth my money... nor did they have any food ready to be served ! And NO beef ribs! GTFOH! Don't say you weren't warned!

Yelp
Jason was amazing at the bar! So personable and very kind. We will totally be back soon -- my friends and I had a great time.

Yelp
Tried out Churchrow yesterday for the first time. First off the cashier was kind of rude about closing the entrance door. Maybe put a sign outside so people know? Secondly they weren't able to sell the smoked burger they had on the menu due to not having buns. I do have to say the brisket was spot on and very good. The fajitas were above average. It did take a while to receive our food. Everything was kind of pricey but that's expected for good bbq. Not sure if I'll give it another try.

Lauren D.

Yelp
We were very excited to try this place. The food was awesome. We'll definitely be back!

Judy H.

Yelp
The food is great, I had BBQ brisket taco, loaded queso, and a house margarita. Beef was to tender, moist and amazing smoke, flour tortilla was homemade! The queso is one of the best in Austin, and of course all the cocktails are at the top of the list for Austin anywhere the restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of food seating, inside and outdoors. Definitely making this a frequent go to.
