I loveeeeee this restaurant! The food is amazing and inexpensive! I’ve been to this place so many times and I’ve never been disappointed! This hidden gem is in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC. Very much worth the trip! The upstairs area turns into a dance floor after hours on the weekends. An all around great experience!

Nico

Google
10/10 churros I don’t give it 5 stars anymore because the hours they open and close are different everyday, very inconsistent. Probably why they don’t get as many people as they would if they were consistent.

Kevin Scrimgeour

Google
Great food at an affordable price. Everyone (kids included) liked the food and we look forward to are next visit.

Greg Jordan-Detamore

Google
It’s hard to find churros in DC, so I appreciate this place. Good value for price! Note that despite the place’s name, they actually have a ton of savory foods; the focus is not on churros or other desserts.

Google
We visit this restaurant 5 years ago, we are in Washington again on vacation so today we went to the restaurant again, the food was really good, the churros are a must.

Google
Pretty good churros, which are hard to find in DC. I got mine to take-out and they came out pretty quickly in a brown paper bag.

Google
Delicious churros con chocolate! An excellent stop after a night out on 18th St./Columbian Rd.

Google
My husband was very excited to try this place on his first trip to DC. He is originally from Sevilla and has a hard time finding Spanish food where we live. We were staying in the convention district so before we made our way to AdMo I checked multiple online sources to confirm their hours. We arrived during the published open hours to find it closed.

Yelp
Stopped here while I'm town and got Sangria, a few tapas and some churros overall was an ok time and taste ok

Yelp
Despite the abundance of negative reviews of Churrería Madrid, I had a very good experience. The food was very good, the service was fine, and it was quiet when I was there (I've heard it gets LIT though later in the evening). The quality of the food here warrants three (3) stars. I ordered callos madrileños, which were impressively good, as it's a difficult dish to prepare well, and also tried the croquettes and tortilla. The callos had a few hard and chewy intestinal waste byproducts, which probably should have been cleaned out before cooking, but the dish was nevertheless flavorful and filling. The churros, although not really what you'd find in Madrid, were excellent. The portion was very large too! An additional one (1) star goes to the price/value ratio of Churrería Madrid. I felt like the prices were very reasonable (the churros were $5 for a large order!), especially given the location. The bowl of callos was under $10. I would come back to this restaurant.

Yelp
I got delivery from this spot for the first time. Got the carne asada steak with some plantains and other sides. Also, of course I had the try the churros. The steak was decent, it was tender enough and tasted good. I expected some more notes from the marinade, but maybe that's not their style here. The churros were great, crispy and sweet with that fresh-donut-esque quality about them. I was a little bummed not to have the chocolate sauce, which I think was a function of the delivery. Certainly this experience left me wanting to try Churreria Madrid in person.

Yelp
It's hard to find places in DC that have fair prices for the portion, and this place is one of those rare places. I love the texture, size, and portion of the churros for only $5. The pupusa is one of the best I've been able to find in DC (not so doughy, nice and crispy with a good amount of filling), and the croquettes are also great for the portion and price. I love how the cook prepared these foods and really recommend this place to people if you're looking for some comfort food. I ordered on UberEats.

Yelp
1130 pm and stopped by for some churros and sangria. Was told the bar was closing in 10 minutes. Could I get just food? No, closing.

Adrienne B.

Yelp
Plus one for the service and location, and the churros were good. Minus a million for the food. In this order: Vegetarian app platter: Empanadas - terrible and cold inside; from a frozen box, clearly Potatoes - dry, no sauce Mushrooms - ok Tortilla espanola - very dry and lacked spice/salt - not made fresh Plantains - Ok...a bit chewy, sour cream was fine Sangria - extremely watery Rice and beans - fine Shrimp - the best of the bunch, actually pretty tasty Bread - who gives bread without butter? Bathroom - lacked towels and looked run-down The food needs some SERIOUS work. Like, yikes. The price - not bad, the food - not good lol.
google avatar

Francesca S.

Yelp
Mixed bag here. Some really delicious food - rice with actual flavor, great soups. I usually order take out/delivery and clearly note preferences in English and Spanish (medium rare, no beans, please include sauce, etc.). Sometimes they miss the notes, or disregard them (no sauce, overdone steak) which is disappointing because when this place gets it right, knocks it out of the park. Luckily, they get it right more often than not.

Yelp
Despite the name, (Madrid) this is not a Spanish restaurant by any stretch, it's Salvadoran in food and ambience. The Tex Mex music was blasting loudly on a Sunday night, so uncomfortably it was to the ears that we couldn't stay upstairs and settled in the bar area instead. We ordered tapas, which the server called appetizers and she couldn't understand why we only ordered small plates, and kept asking us if we were interested in full dishes. The flavor and presentation was not there. The gambas were sautéed in butter instead of olive oil (the Madrid way), the tortilla espanola consisted of flavorless mashed potatos wrapped in egg batter, the croquetas were mushy and didn't have any discernable chicken, the sangria had barely any fruit in it and too much ice, and the churros were baked, not deep fried and crunchy, but soft and chewy instead and perhaps undercooked. Very sad for a place called "churreria." Having eaten many churros in Madrid, Spain and countless tapas, it was a big disappointment for us. And the service wasn't friendly and we were even overcharged. We won't be back.

Yelp
Fantastic churros. A tad too much sugar for my taste, but just what I was looking for. $5 gets you a bag of churros. Consume it by the first day - it's gets soft the next day.

Phoebe G.

Yelp
Cockroach in my desert. I ordered churros with chocolate & there was a cockroach floating in the chocolate. I ordered $75-80 of food from there. Thankfully, this was the first thing I saw. I've literally gone backpack hiking/camping for months and have never had a cockroach in my food.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot to swing through for happy hour. The music was a bit loud on our impromptu visit, but service was great and our bartender was very friendly. They also have an upstairs area, which we did not visit, but seemed like there was more action going on up there!
google avatar

Yelp
I had a sudden craving for churros after being out all day. Never knew this place existed on the corner of Columbia Rd. and 18th Street, next to a bike store. Small space with two floors. Service was quick and the churros are amazing! Perfect amount of deep fried with sugar and chocolate dressing on the side. The price is totally worth it and affordable for a dozen! Doesn't get any better than that.

Yelp
so i love churros and given the name of the place, i decided to come here w my bf when i ordered my drink (piña colada), it was watered down and started separating almost immediately. i could feel the chunks of ice in there. the churros were good, though. very delicious. but the chocolate SAUCE they served was literally....hot chocolate.... very disappointing also we're in the midst of covid-19, and they didn't have soap in the bathroom. idk how to feel about that service wasn't bad but overall it led us having to find a different place all together

Yelp
I came in here tonight with the hopes of getting some authentic food from Spain, but when I walked through the door I wasn't greeted very friendly by the woman who was also working bend the bar. Perhaps it was because I'm not Latina? I have to say she was very off-putting. What I would have ordered would have been the tortilla Espanola, perhaps with a Corona? The calamares a late Romana looked tempting as well. As it turned out,I wasn't feeling the music that was blaring either. It seems too much like a bar atmosphere, then an actual restaurant to sit down and eat peacefully. I checked the menu further and I seemed very interesting. But in the end, I passed, turned around and left. I guess the first impression really does matter, at least tonight it did!

Yelp
Updating as it's been quite a few years. Food is OK now, not great and not bad. I think they've tried to cut costs and lost some of the magic. It's still a decent takeout option for some items.

Yelp
Nice place to enjoy great food and service. I've been visiting this place for over a decade and enjoy it every time! My favorites are: Croquetas, milanesa or any beef dish, always a caballo and their churros are great.

Yelp
I ordered delivery through Grubhub yesterday afternoon. I got the chicken quesadilla and side orders of rice and beans. It also came with a free small order of churros (Grubhub coupon). The delivery arrived about 10 minutes ahead of the 50-minute delivery estimate. The quesadilla was good. It came with fresh salsa, sour cream, and you can add guacamole for $1 extra (which I did!). Some of the chicken tasted burnt, but there was a good ratio of chicken to cheese, and the quesadilla was large enough that with the sides I added, I easily got two filling meals out of it. The rice and beans were both quite large portions, and those were good as well. The churros were delicious - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and well coated with sugar. So why three stars and not more? There were two problems: First, in order to get to the $20 minimum for Grubhub delivery, I added an order of chips and salsa to my order. They neglected to include it. I didn't actually want them since I got so much food already (and in fact even without the chips it was still worth the money), but since I had to pay for them it was unfortunate I didn't get them. Looking at other recent reviews, it seems like this isn't a rare occurrence. Second, the salsa that came with the quesadilla was 90% red onion. There were maybe five pieces of tomato in it. It tasted very fresh, but it was so heavy on the red onion that I couldn't enjoy it. Ultimately, this was a fine meal (or two) but I'm not sure I'd order from them again.

Yelp
I love this place. I have been coming for the churros and hot chocolate since I was a little kid. It's a family tradition. We do dinner about once a year. If Estadio, etc. is your style, this may or not be a match. The place is authentic in its own way and charming.

Yelp
Worst churro i ever had in my LIFE. Tasted like pure raw flour AND they don't even offer chocolate or caramel sauce. Large order for cheap but it's CHEAP for a reason. Shut this place down
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
These churros are where it's at! They make them just like the ones I enjoyed in my childhood overseas. I never thought I'd find Madrid-style churros again since the thicker style filled with chocolate seems to be more popular in the US, so I was thrilled to hear about Churreria Madrid, and even more thrilled to get my hands on good old churros again. Light, crispy, sweet loops of deliciousness. They sprinkle a little more sugar on it than I'd like, but I can always ask them to hold the sugar next time. I also enjoyed their calamares, which was lightly seasoned and had a lacy golden coating. Alas, the paella left much to be desired (it was too light on the saffron), but what does it matter? I'm coming back for the churros.
google avatar

Angelyn A.

Yelp
Been looking for "authentic" churros with chocolate and this was the only restaurant that looked promising. Finally braved driving into DC to try it out after craving for months. A dozen churros for $4, and hot chocolate for almost $2. The churros were legit, and the hot choco was okay (because ideally it should be thick and rich, not exactly like a hot chocolate drink). Inhaled the dozen quickly and bought another dozen to go. The place is small, and the second floor wasn't open when we went. The first floor is small, with a bar and TVs.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
This food tastes like actual human barf. It seems almost impossible to mess up plain rice, but somehow they manage. If you insist on ruining a meal, order only a churro and then get the hey out of this dirt hole. EW.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
I don't know about all of the other stuff reviewed below; we only came for churros. But man they were good. This is the first time I have had churros that reminded me of Mexico City. However, be warned-- $3 gets you more churros than two people can eat without being embarrassingly stuffed.
google avatar

Elena B.

Yelp
You can get a dozen freshly made and absolutely terrific churros for $4. It can be loud (think disco ball) so I always take churros to go. Honestly I am torn about sharing this review because it's so amazing and I want to keep the goodness all to myself. If you only want churros to go bring cash as they have a credit card minimum
google avatar

Pia S.

Yelp
We give this place 5 stars. Paella was cooked perfectly. Also ordered the fried snapper - decent portions on both.
google avatar

Yelp
We loved the vibes here such a good place to eat and the woman here is so sweet I felt connected to home here. First time in DC and this was great.
google avatar

Lissete D.

Yelp
Churros! That's all that I went in for, and that is all I got. The place looks kind of seedy and I almost did not go in at all. In the end, I'm glad I did. The churros were served up hot. A couple of shakes of the bag sugar coated them perfectly. These loops of deliciousness took me back, somewhat, to what we have enjoyed in Spain. The prize for the best still stands and it goes to a little shop in Palma de Mallorca. But these were very good as well. So far, the best we've had in the states.

Sam B.

Yelp
Churreria Madrid has the best churro in the DC metro area that I've tried. Nothing comes close.

Yelp
NEVER ordering from here again. ON THE FOOD I DID NOT RECEIVE: They charged me for food I DID NOT receive. After I called them to correct the order, they only gave me excuses about how they included all the food in the order that was delivered to me. I don't know how many people call in to try to con them out of food, but judging from their response, it must be too many, because they would not budge. Either refund my money or deliver what you said you would. ON THE FOOD I ACTUALLY RECEIVED: In addition, the food I did receive was completely cold, and was not wrapped well (I got a burrito). I took one bite of it and had my mouth filled with sour cream and nothing else. The rest of it was just mostly rice and very dry. I had all of the ingredients but did not have any of them together even though it was a burrito. If I knew it was going to be like this I would have just gone to Chipotle for inauthentic burritos. I'd really like to include some more flavorful language in this review, but I guess I will just sum up my experience as ridiculously disappointed and upset. I will NEVER get food from here again and will advise everyone I know who is even thinking about ordering from this place to refrain from ordering from this restaurant.

Yelp
This restaurant delivered to me a meal that was not supposed to have shrimp on it. They did this TWICE. I am deathly allergic to shrimp so this was a highly serious matter. At first they refused to deliver me a replacement meal then they told me they would but it would take two hours. After waiting more then two hours I called to check on my food and they told me they were refusing to deliver me my replacement. IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES NEVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE BECAUSE IT COULD KILL YOU.
google avatar

Leah K.

Yelp
I love this neighborhood Adams Morgan Spanish restaurant right on Columbia road. We ordered the paella which was HUGE (the for 1 portion is definitely good for 2!) packed with mussels, sausage, clams, squid and chicken with fresh squeezed lemon. The chicken croquettes and gambas al ajo were great for an appetizer but my all time favorite are the beef empanadas. I swear I could eat 50 of them.
google avatar

Alyssa W.

Yelp
Ordered food for delivery. Large part of the order wrong. When called to fix problem they hung up and then wouldn't answer the phone. When grub hub called they informed the representative that we should have been "happy we got something" after admitting they sent the wrong item. What? Never again.

Stacey R.

Yelp
Been an all-time fave since I was a kid! My grandmother would get me churros every Sunday. The seafood paella is always our go-to. Seating is limited so make reservations.

Yelp
Owned by a Spanish family, with the husband and wife in the kitchen cooking up traditional Spanish fare. An upper dining room with white table cloth and window tables overlooking Adams Morgan. A churreria, a very special bakery that produces a chocolate-dipped dessert strictly to recipe. That's where the fairy tale ends. Walking in on a weekend a little early for dinner places you in the sad bar with a young skimpily dressed woman behind the counter, and an old man on a stool sipping a fruity cocktail leering at her. Pitiful. We escape upstairs, and despite the tacky furniture, are excited to be at this place. Questions about the menu are met with exact repetitions of the menu. No worries: we order a special, a traditional item, and a pitcher of sangria. What arrives can be best described as microwaved canned food. Forget bay leaves, the black beans don't even have salt. Nor does the corn. There's a terrible "sauce" on the entrees. Fries are crinkle-cut from the frozen section. The only high-point is the mushrooms: perfectly sauteed, slightly crispy on the outside. Too bad they're tasteless white buttons. The sangria is miserable. We were so disappointed with the food we skipped the famous dessert. I wouldn't be a good judge of authentic churros anyway. If you know your churros, let me know what you think. I really wanted to like this place. I kept trying all through dinner. Luckily, the sorry state of cuisine in our hip metro area means they will keep putting food on the table. It looks nice from the outside if you squint just right. If you want mid-priced Spanish food, go to Jaleo downtown. If you want really good sangria, go to Taberna. If you want great churros, go to Spain?
google avatar

Laila L.

Yelp
Mediocre would be a compliment for the food. There are no words for the icky atmosphere. I lived in Madrid for a while, I love dives, and I'll eat just about anything. I'm very fond of foods I cannot identify. It is not me who has the problem here -- this place just stinks, and literally, too. I give a star for the wine ordered and a star for the garlic shrimp appetizer. Then again, how can anyone mess up garlic and butter? Minus one star (and that's merciful) for the persistent smell of moldly mop and wood cleaner, dead animal, or whatever the hell that funky smell was that added insult to the experience of the really, really bad food. I have no idea why a window was not opened upstairs prior to our sitting down. My mariscos were rubbery. Alex's steak was completely marbled, just a terrible cut of meat. Our server was really nice, but I have no idea how he makes ends meet working there. There was only one other table seated during peak dining hours for the entire time that we were there.

Yelp
Ten years ago, this place was great. Authentic food and great service. Some friends and I went back last week and pretty much everything was inedible. Mussels and gambas arrived lukewarm in some kind of butter/cornstarch sauce - awful. And the Patatas Bravas, a dish no Spanish restaurant could possibly get wrong, arrived barely cooked and swimming in some kind of vinegar/tabasco sauce. It went straight back to the kitchen. Never again.

Yelp
**Churro Review since this place bills itself as a churreria** Summer before I graduated hs, my mom sent me to study at the University of Granada. My best friend went too and there we were 16 and loving life pounding the pavements of Madrid, Malaga, and Granada. We loved churros. We loved calimochos. We loved thinking we were 16 going on 25. In a way, we were. The churros at Churreria Madrid are good ole Spanish churros. They aren't the Mexican ones which are different and have cinnamon on them. Don't get it twisted. They also aren't as thick and moist/dense as the Argentinian churros you can get at Dolcezza. They are the real deal, just like in the Motherland as only she can do it. If you get them to go, give the bag a few extra shakes to coat the sugar even more. olé
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
Five stars for the food, two for the setting and seating. Pro: Best grilled calamari I've ever had in the seafood paella Con: Bathrooms, not great. Seating was not for comfort. So, it's an amazing hole-in-the-wall. I can't wait to go back to try another option on the menu but I'll probably get it for carryout.
google avatar

Ana-Maria J.

Yelp
This place makes me feel like I'm in a little off the grid pueblo that lacks consistent running water, but I love every thing about it.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Overpriced, yet bland and simplistic food. Oppressively loud crappy Spanish pop music. Few vegetarian selections, and a waiter who neglected to inform us of a vegetarian special when asked if they had anything. The churros themselves are a reasonably tasty dessert, but I don't know why anyone would stick around that long.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Three stars is just about right. I would not eat dinner at this restaurant, though I have in the past. It seems, as some reviewers attest, to be the kind of place that used to be good. The chicken was not cooked appropriately. I wouldn't even know how to render judgment on the "sauce." If not for the churros, this place would get one, or maybe two, stars. The dessert service in general leaves the impression that one has visited two restaurants of wildly differing quality. All this said, I'm not sure how many among us find ourselves in Adams Morgan with no greater desires than a plate of churros. But, hey, now you know.
google avatar

Lizzy W.

Yelp
I've never been to this restaurant, but I've ordered delivery a few times. It is always very quick and accurate, which I appreciate in a town where that often isn't the case. The food itself is ok for the money. It's not very expensive, but I've also had better food. The beef quesadilla is actually just beef in a wrap with basically nothing else on it. Still, they're open late and don't charge a delivery fee, so it's a good late night option if you need something quick and easy.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. Slightly upscale feel but still casual. The last time I came here was with five friends on a Sunday afternoon. It was pretty empty upstairs, and so pretty with the sun coming in through the three pane window. When we ordered, we got so much food! The table was covered with plates and everything was delicious. But the real clincher for this place is the churros and hot chocolate for dessert. They make authentic churros here, not those doughy things street vendors sell. Needless to say, even with a refill, they were gone in about five minutes.

Yelp
When I stepped into Churreria Madrid one warm April evening, I was immediately transported back to Spain. It is simply that authentic, right down to the seemingly aloof bartender. I've been here twice, and both times sat at the bar downstairs, but the dining room upstairs seems a bit more formal, if that's what you're looking for. As for the food, the sampler plate with jamon y queso (cured ham, similar to prosciutto, and manchego cheese) was splendid. The tortilla was passable, although this can be appreciated as the simple Spanish staple that it is, and need not be dressed up for my taste. The churros were to die for! While we were eating a father and daughter stopped by to get a bag to take home. The little girl just couldn't wait to get her hands on a piping hot sugary churro, and after tasting one (okay, several) for myself, I can understand why. The bar was also nothing special, and the bartender did what he could for a tinto verano, lacking the Casera that can only be found in Spain. The sangria was, needless to say, top-notch. Basically, this is the place to go if you want to appreciate authentic Spanish food in an authentic Spanish environment. No frills, no fancy dishes--just the real deal. The bartender (at least last time I was there) is Galician, and both times I've been there, there were a few Spanish expat regulars sitting at the bar, so I knew it wasn't just me who appreciated the chill Spanish vibe.

Yelp
I came for a mexican hot chocolate and churros on the walk back from getting dinner somewhere else. I was more than a little red in the face when they brought me my food they said they had a $10 minimum on cards. Hot chocolate was good, churros were awesome, but make sure you have cash if you're just popping in for a snack!

Yelp
Went here to grab some lunch when I was sick. The chicken soup was excellent: plenty of flavor without being too spicy, and just the right amount of salt. Definitely worth getting even if not sick. The fried plantains were also excellent. The waiter was very attentive, frequently refilling water, asking if I wanted more tea, etc. Perhaps not the best for lunch in a hurry, but a delightful place to grab a relaxing lunch and enjoy good Spanish food and music. Must try the churros when I return. Edit: Returned for churros and a soccer game. Churros were excellent, waiter again attentive and very friendly.

Yelp
Most times, especially after scoffing down a satisfying meal, I would resist ordering dessert . But a visit to La Churrería would not be complete without ordering the signature dessert that this "Churro stand" is known for - Churros. As a student living in Madrid, I would stumble out of the Metro station, either tired or a bit boozed-up from cheap beers, looking for a snack before walking back to my apartment. Without fail, there would always be a stand selling freshly fried churros with a side serving of lava-like hot chocolate, thick enough to stand a churro in the middle of the cup. La Churrería did not disappoint me again, and I was savoring the finger-wide, crispy outside, soft inside fried dough sticks as if I were suffering from "the munchies". The thick hot chocolate that came in an espresso cup was just adequate enough to fulfil all the churro-dunking. I later learned from the waiter that what makes Spanish churros unique from other versions is the high content of yucca/cassava in the dough that results in a smoother inside. To read rest of review and view photos, check out my blog at Wongeats.

Yelp
Love the churros here I literally drive 45min just to have them from this place. They are the best I've ever had

Yelp
All i can say is, that people have to be a little more adventurous, when you go to churreria, if you go, they have this stew called cocido of madrid, also order the callos, is a stew of cow stomach, with pigs feet, and chorizo, not appropriate for someone with high blood pressure or cholesterol, is really delicious, the paella is not bad, sure it can always be better, but remember that the prices are affordable. I enjoy drinking at the bar, it changed a few years ago, the first floor used to be too old school, now is really nice, is a good hang out, if you are tired of the noise, go there order some tapas, the croquetas, the pulpo, get some olives, an estrella, or a glass of wine, Lan is my favorite, and you might just like this place.
