Restaurants With New Orleans’s Best Cuban Sandwiches | Eater New Orleans

"This Cuban cafe off Vets in Metairie is known as much for its black beans and donuts as its Cuban sandwich, so might as well get all three while you’re here. The sandwich is as traditional as it gets, though made with New Orleans-style French bread, and the layers are perfectly proportioned and pressed into a dense, buttery crust." - Clair Lorell

I had the Cuban sandwich which was awful. The meat had a funny taste. I was very disappointed. There were a lot of customers, so maybe the other food is good.

Google
This Cuban restaurant is amazing. The Churros were unstoppable! I ordered the Monday lunch special, which was a Cuban steak topped with onions and served with red beans and rice. The steak was kind of like a thin flank steak and was really flavorful. The meal was a little on the expensive side, but that is mostly because I noticed some other customers order the churros and I had to have an order. At only $4.95 this was a steal, but it bumped my meal up above $20. I will be back for more churros, thanks y’all!

Google
This place is amazing. From the owner to the server, the experience was amazing. Thank you all so much. Sorry. No picture of the food. It was devoured as soon as it hit the table. Had the croquettes, the rice and beans, a sandwich and the churros!!! Amazing.

Google
Been coming here for over 30 years. My abuelita & I used go walk here 30 years ago just for Churros. It's still great every time im in town & I need some Cafè con Leche y churros. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Google
I drove 15 minutes to this dump because I thought it might have decent Cuban food. Walked in and sat down. The old man just stared at me for five full minutes. There are multiple other reviews about this guy being disrespectful to customers when they walk in. Never took my order. Never said hello. I eventually walked out. If you don't want my money because I'm a white guy then I'll go spend it somewhere else. You can see another reviews that he treats Latin people one way and everyone else a different way. There are so many other places in New orleans. I guess they don't like the white guy going in to order ethnic food. Or they're just lazy and don't want to help. Either way, this isn't the only Cuban place in New orleans. It's just the only one I won't return to. *Notice how 90% of the positive reviews are from people who are latin, most likely cuban. That just shows that they don't treat other races and ethnicities as well.*

A slice of old school Little Havana plopped down in Metairie, not too far from the old airport and its rental garages. Delicious Cuban sandwiches and churros, friendly service.

Google
Excellent service, delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. I was drawn to this place by the fantastic smell and I was not disappointed. Great food and the owner gave me great advice on food and drink choices.

Google
The latte was great and the churros was to heavenly delicious. I recommend you try this place to get that authentic taste.

Yelp
Returned to Churros after many years of absence (no idea why... life?) I was craving a combo of a Medianoche Sandwich and a serving of nostalgia. Got both in spades. The sandwich was perfect: classic cuban components of roast pork, ham, melty cheese with pickle and mustard on an eggy roll, pressed and warm. Nostalgia dish? The yucca con mojo. Yeah, it's carbs on steroids but sooo yummy. This was one of the 2 sides DH got with his Lechon Asado. The other being spot-on Maduros. This place has been around for years and was even better than I remember. Yum, yum, go get you some!!

Yelp
I tried Churros Cafe about a Year ago. Cuban Sandwich was sooo good. I also had a Churro, wish I ordered two. I don't frequent the area often but guess where I'm at today. Gonna tear up the Churro and Cuban. So good. Service is good also. Real family style. Ambiance is nostalgic.

Yelp
If you crave Cuban food this is the place to go, great food and service - go try it out

Tess E.

Yelp
The food is unmatched. Service is casual and friendly. It's normally a quiet spot. I tell everyone I can who asks about Cuban food. I just need this place to stick around it's the only place that still cooks like Grandpa.

Ryab L.

Yelp
Best churros of not only metarie but including New Orleans area and clean. Good service

Vanessa Z.

Yelp
Delicious and friendly. Food was great! Really enjoyed the churros which are made fresh and served plain which you can then dress with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar or both! So good! Also the fresh blended fruit drinks are great. We had the cubano sandwich, empanadas & churros. As well as mango drink & tamarind drink. The beef empanada was better than the chicken. Can't wait to try more.

Yelp
I've been feenin' for a Cuban sandwich for a minute now and was excited when I accidentally found this little Cuban Cafe tucked away behind the Clearview Mall. Being an SFL native, I had access to lots of Latin and Caribbean foods and I miss them all dearly. I ordered my Cuban sandwich and a side of plantains for $14.38. My excitement and smile was quickly turned upside down. The sandwich was dry and lacked taste. The roast pork wasn't seasoned very well and they only give a very thin slice of ham. Normally, Cuban sandwiches are stacked with both and has some moisture inside. Mr. Jose and staff are friendly and I'm going to give them one more chance to make their signature sandwich the way it's supposed to be made. There is a good selection of other entrees on their menu and depending on my sandwich do over, I'll continue to patron them.

Yelp
I love the food at Churros, especially their Cuban. Their daily specials have never disappointed me either. Today I had the Cuban sandwich and it was delicious, as always. The hubs went with the arroz con pollo and I had more than just one bite because it was that good. Excellent food and decent service. It's worth a stop for authentic Cuban food.

Yelp
I love this place, been going for years! In my opinion, they have the Best Cuban sandwich, I've also enjoyed their cuban steak, churros, chicken fricase, and the mango shake is refreshing! If you haven't been, what are you waiting for?! Go!! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
It's not the same like it was back when we used to frequent this place. Customer service was unfriendly. The food was not good and expensive!
google avatar

Amie G.

Yelp
Food tastes great. What wasn't great was the price you have to pay for nothing. So the meal doesn't come with the rice or beans so it's actually a side that you choose two from. RICE IF ANYTHING SHOULD COME WITH THE MEAL. It's very deceiving from the picture when ordering online. Won't be getting the meals from here again, if anything the churros

Yelp
Churros Cafe! I finally do a review on this place. One of the best Cuban places in Metairie. I grew up coming here because it is right next door to my dad's shop, and from an early age, I loved getting their homemade churros. As I got older, I ventured out into their other dishes and found one of my absolute favorites, the Chori Pan. It's a sandwich that is simple, but delicious. It's made with chorizo and Swiss cheese and it's also got an amazing sauce on it. They press it flat and grill it to perfection until all of the cheese is melted and it's ooey gooey and savory. Perfect thing for me to order ahead on the ride home from work and enjoy in their small, eclectic dining room. Vivian and Jose have done this right for over two decades now, I believe. Here's to many more to come for Churros Cafe! Outstanding! Cheers!

Yelp
Churros is the best place to get authentic Cuban food in the New Orleans area. Everything is always so fresh and delicious. Small restaurant but you can always take the delicious food to go. I love the dinners they sell for the holidays!

Yelp
Another Yelp-er had written a review recently on a Cuban restaurant near where she lives and raved about it. She had been to several other Cuban restaurants. I decided that I needed to try it. I did a simple search on YELP, and found this and another restaurant, which I have not yet tried, but will soon. Let's get back to Churros Cafe. This is the restaurant ran and operated by the older mom and grandma and made smooth but the older dad talking everyone up. At least that's the impression I get. They have a table reserved for a permanent birthday party in the back, and one for the Cuban mafia. I have seen a party at one, but I haven't yet seen the mafia table occupied yet. The parking lot is shared with the rest of this small strip mall, which is located on Kingman Street, the nearest major place being the Sears end of Clearview Mall. There are about a dozen tables or so inside. My first meal, I had the Albondigas, which is meatballs in a sauce that is kind of sweet and spicy at the same time, rice and the fried plantains. This was an awesome dish that when I could not finish it, was good reheated the next day. I was the only customer dining in this visit. My second visit was on Cinco De Mayo, and let me tell you, this place was 3/4 full of Spanish speaking people, which to me is an indicator of something good. I had the Picodillo A Lo Cubano, which is ground beef simmered with peas, potatoes, and bell pepper. Also, I had the white rice, fried plantains and the toasted bread. This was amazing. The interior of the restaurant is neat and clean. Granted, I believe this is my first time ever having Cuban food, but this was amazing. I think this is well worth the stop. In the evenings, the other businesses are not open, so there is plenty of parking. I would suggest everyone come by.

Yelp
Your food is great. Your service is great. I recommend Churros to everyone. I've never been dissatisfied nor disappointed. If I could I would eat there daily.

Yelp
This place has the best Cuban and Media Noche sandwiches in Metairie or New Orleans. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Churros Cafe was my first run in with Cuban food a few years ago. I've been coming back here ever since. My fave is the Medianoche (midnight) sandwich and their freshly squeezed exotic fruit juices. Authentic and delicious all around! The midnight bread is soft, light and fluffy and the pork, ham, cheese, mustard, and pickles all complement each other very well. I honestly haven't tried much else, because every time I come here, I crave the medianoche sandwich. The restaurant is tucked in on the east side of Clearview mall. The owners are super sweet and even though they prefer Spanish, they'll get your order in English too. There's even a table for the Cuban Mafia, a variety of funny and whimsical signs (such as trade coffee for gossip), and pictures of all the exotic fruits they use to make their juices. Oh and if you have a business card, drop it in for their weekly draws..you might win yourself a free meal!

Yelp
I love the food! I love the family atmosphere and the nice people who run this cafe. Authentic!

Yelp
My fiancé and I came here for lunch. The service was friendly but extremely slow- it took over 45 minutes for our food to come. We ordered an empanadas appetizer, which was good but came with ketchup which I though was strange. We split a Choripan sandwich, which wasn't anything like what I have had before....usually it has butterflied sausage on it, but this one had slices that were so thin you couldn't taste it at all. We also split an arroz con pollo, which needed some salt and pepper but was pretty good. All in all, it took way to long and was pretty highly priced. We probably will not be back.

Yelp
Looks good from here but I'll update this review when I eventually make it to Metairie. So hello Churros Cafe, I'm coming to see you great people this weekend from the city of progress, Hialeah. Reviews look good and pictures are visually appetizing so I'm looking forward to fare I'm very familiar with and hoping for a unique twist.

Yelp
Word on the street is this place has the best Cubano sandwich and churros! Hubby and I came on a Monday for lunch (11:45am). Hidden mom/pop type kinda cafe...Place your orders at the counter and grab a seat. We decided to order a Cuban sandwich, beef empanada, and fried plantains. Tried ordering churros but was told no churros until after 2pm! What kind of place is named after churros and none available?! Super sad. Cuban sandwich was a decent size. Sandwich was lacking a bit. Hubby liked the texture of the empanada. We received one and not like a few like other reviews posted. Fried plantains were a bit soggy but who doesn't love a sweet ripen plantain? Maybe we'll be back for churros next time..

Yelp
This is a Jem in the heart of Metairie. We tried the Papa Rellena which is a fried potato ball stuffed with cheese, they were light and delicious. I had the Cuban Sandwich which was spot on. The Beef Empanadas were full of flavor. Also tried Azzoz con Pollo very simple but full of flavor, a yellow rice and chicken casserole type of dish. It was a great experience.
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Good food and service! Recommend the Cuban sandwich. The chorizo pan sandwich was more like a grilled swiss cheese, there wasn't enough meat to taste.
google avatar

Fernando E.

Yelp
Located in a strip mall close to Clearview Shopping Center on Kingman St. You place your order at the counter , pay , and grab a table and someone brings your food when it's ready. I had the Cuban sandwich with very nice crisp bread and full of pork , ham and cheese. The sweet fried plantains are prepared just right. One observation I have is that every time I go to Churros Cafe there is a large empty table with a placard that says "Reserved for Cuban Mafia". Since I have only always seen this table empty ,I can only conclude that the Cuban Mafia is in hiding or in jail. Other than that , the Cuban food here is pretty good.

Yelp
My wife and I came here for lunch one day and when we walked in the place was empty (red flag). We were served by a cute old Cuban lady who made our experience a little fun. I ordered the Ropa vieja (very salty) and my wife had the Cuban sandwich (a little bland). The food wasn't impressive at all and the portions were extremely small. We had a little bag of churros to-go and they were decent, they prepare them plain then have a little jar at the front counter of the cinnamon/sugar mix and sprinkle it in the bag. We found them to be a little on the hard side. I am all about supporting local family owned restaurants but I don't think we will back... :/

Yelp
This is the best cuban restaurant that I know of in NOLA. This is actually one of my top places to eat in the whole city. The rest of the city can go to overly crowded/rated Coop's Place or Drago's. Give me Churros any day of the week. A local family-owned restaurant that serves their food with love and devotion. The atmosphere is very laid-back and relaxing. The menu boasts a lot of familiar cuban dishes such as roast pork with congri and yucca, shredded beef with rice and tostones, and a Cuban sandwich. I come often for lunch as they have great lunch specials during the week. Love their Tues, Wed, and Thurs lunch specials (Tues is beef stew, Wed is chicken fricase with rice or you can have shredded beef, black beans, and rice. Thurs is roast pork, yucca, and congri). Lunch specials are a great bargain at $8.25. Can't get any better food and service for that price! Oh yeah also try the churros (Cuba's version of a beignet. It's a fried dough stick). Simply addictive!!
google avatar

Nyerie S.

Yelp
Yes, they have the best Cuban sandwiches, but it's SO much more than that. Try their traditional menu items. It's grandmas' recipes that no one else can duplicate because of the love she puts into them! Best to go with an empty stomach, try a sampler plate of starters with the best mojito you will ever drink, follow with one of grandmas' special plates, then close with some churros and delicious cuban coffee!
google avatar

Jinyoung P.

Yelp
Went here to try the Cubano. Delicious. Filling. Great for a lunch, except I'm not in Metairie all that often for lunch. For anyone that knows restaurants in Portland, OR, I used to love Pambiche. I wish I could go in for dinner and order things like Lengua en Salsa and Ropa Vieja. Maybe they serve those things when they are open for dinner? But anyway, I also tried the empanada and the fried plantains, both of which were delightful. I will return if I am in the area while they are open.
google avatar

Yelp
We walked in not sure if we were supposed to order at the counter or wait to be seated. Then we decided to seat ourselves. We waited for maybe 10-15min.... Shortly after the waitress apologize for the wait and took our order. We ordered a mojito and a margarita both were really good and very strong. We also ordered empanadas for our appetizer. I noticed everybody was getting the Cuban sandwich so I ordered that and my husband ordered Albondigas (a dish with meatballs). I'm so glad we came here you can tell it's a family owned restaurant since (I think) grandma brings you your food :) The servers there are very friendly. The food is definitely something worth talking about you can tell they really care about the quality of food they put out. We loved our dinner and the experience we had at this restaurant. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place, service was a little slow but food was great, which made up for everything. Will definitely go back and try another dish

Yelp
Great authentic Cuban food and staff. Order at the counter and have a seat. Very relaxed environment and good food. They do have a full bar; as well as, a fine selection of coffees. Definitely worth the stop if you are in this area.
google avatar

Claudia R.

Yelp
The place is small and authentic. The beef stew was delicious. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Giselle D.

Yelp
Best food ever. We catered from them for our New Years party and our family was very happy with the food. The pork was juicy and very well marinated, the plantains (maduros) were on point, the arroz congri was SPECTACULAR, the yucca al mojo so soft and tasty... las croquetas de jamon were delicious and the beef empanadas, well they were gone that night- I would def come eat here when we crave home made Cuban food and 200% recommend their catering services.
google avatar

Ryan Z.

Yelp
I really can't say much more than this: they serve the best Cuban sandwiches in America. I've had their meat dishes and a few sides but I can never muster up enough gumption to order anything else but the Cuban. It's in kind of a random location but don't let that fool you. It probably also enables them to keep their prices affordable. The owners and waitresses seem a little grumpy at first but will warm up if you engage them. Very wonderful restarting!
google avatar

Jorge C.

Yelp
This place reminds me of being in San Juan. Great food and wonderful staff. Try the Ropa Vieja sandwich.
google avatar

Tania M.

Yelp
This is truly authentic Cuban cuisine! Only open for lunch but definitely coming back every time I'm in town.
google avatar

Chef Toya B.

Yelp
Literally the BEST Cuban food! I love when I don't need to add salt or pepper to anything in a restaurant! I had the Roast pork, Yuca and beans and rice. Do it!
google avatar

Ana G.

Yelp
This is one of the very few Cuban restaurants in the New Orleans-Metairie area. I ate there tonight with a few friends. The ropa vieja was very good, the congri (black beans and rice) was delicious as well as the plantains. My friends had arroz con pollo, (chicken and yellow rice) and picadillo. They were very pleased also. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous enough that you'll have leftovers. The place is very clean and the atmosphere pleasant. What a nice surprise for a Saturday night meal with friends! Hope to go there again soon!

Peggy L.

Yelp
I went to this café in a desperate search for authentic Cuban food in New Orleans. I found it! You will not be disappointed with the empanadillas - both chicken and beef are delicious. This is a family owned business with dad and son up front and mom in the kitchen. I went on a Thursday so did not try the daily special which was Pork roast, Congri and Yuka. I will be back for the Red Beans and Rice with Cuban Steak on Monday.
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
Oh my gosh don't let the strip mall location fool you. The food reminds me of Guatemala and my grandmother's cooking. I had the beef stew which was delicious. My husband had the Cuban sandwich which was equally tasty. Everything about our meal spoke of homemade dishes made with love. We had visited here many years ago but didn't remember how good the food was. We are definitely not going to wait years again. I'm sure we will be back much sooner. Highly recommend if you are looking for good Cuban food.
google avatar

Kurt L.

Yelp
Very eclectic cafe with authentic decor and staff. Would highly recommend anything on the menu, but the Cubano and the medianoche hit the spot. Every time I am in there someone always says "this is our first time here". If that then keeps up, they are going to take over the strip mall like Chinese kitchen on Carrollton. Excellent food and great staff.
google avatar

Dave B.

Yelp
Do not pass this place up! The food is delicious and the staff is great. It was my first experience eating Cuban cuisine and I will make a regular visit from now on!! A great chance to support local businesses too!
google avatar

Pete D.

Yelp
This will be short and sweet. I had a craving for a Cuban sandwich and was in the neighborhood. I had a tamal along with an empanada for an appetizer followed by the Cuban sandwich. The pictures on the wall are great to look at while you are eating and saw quite a few other items that I must try. Service was spot on and very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
There is no such thing as a light lunch in or around NOLA, not when you're on vacation at least. But who's really complaining when the lunch specials are this good and generous? The Churros Cafe daily special was chicken and rice. They did not skimp on the chicken. Or the rice. Seriously, there were two full servings of rice on my plate. Did I have to eat all of it right then and there? No. Did I do it anyway? Yes. Hell, yes. It was so perfectly moist and fluffy and flavorful...it's the Filipino in me who simply can't resist OD-ing on rice. The chicken was pretty good too, especially sprinkled with some of their homemade hot sauce. They actually have a variety of hot sauces that you obtain from the shelf on the wall, along with utensils, napkins and other condiments. The plantains that came with my dish were also perfectly cooked - there was a slight crispness on the outside, and all the yummy softness inside. I took a bite out of my fiance's choripan sandwich, which resembled a Cuban, and almost wished I had ordered that. The pork and the cheese in the pressed sandwich was devilishly delicious. But then I wouldn't have had plantains. Or rice. The mango shake I ordered helped to wash it all down. For all that food and a shake, I spent less than $13. Lunch may not have been light on my stomach, but at least it was light on my wallet.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
The lunch specials are really not very impressive to me and I don't find them to be a good value. In fact I would NEVER eat the Monday special of the Cuban steak ever again. Perhaps the other items on the menu are far better but after sampling several of the lunch specials I'm just not impressed. They do provide very rapid turn around on your order and the specials are served within minutes of ordering them. Service is non-existent here and you just order at the counter and they put your food out on the counter when its ready. Pho Orchid is a block away from here and I much prefer lunch there. I will return to sample the dinner menu at some point and see if that brings some greater love to the disappointment I've experienced here so far.
google avatar

Mike Z.

Yelp
Food was pretty good but ah this is overpricedddd!! And that waitress was so rude, she took the hat off my head saying it's rude to wear them. Really it's a stupid tradition. Other than that, they are nice people

Yelp
Now that was a Mojito! Browsing Yelp for someplace new to try and came across the Churro reviews. Cuban??? High rating, but not many reviews. Hmmm, is this one of those restaurants with 8 reviews, all owners or employees? Average number of reviews is like 3? Surprisingly... no! I'm intrigued.... and it is conveniently located on the same street as my dentist. Not really sure what is convenient about that.... I guess I didn't have to figure out how to get there. 7:00 PM on Saturday evening. Churros is located in a sleepy strip mall about a block and a half south of Veterans. We did a quick drive-by to check it out and were cheered to see bright lights and customers. Parking was no problem. Probably holds 50+, about 15 people seated when we arrived. Variety of tables and seating, not bad. Nothing exciting about the decor, but clean, bright and cheery. Based on other reviews, we were expecting to order at the counter, but, in fact, there is table service. This is very casual, laid back atmosphere. Our waitress was an experienced senior citizen, I gathered a friend of the owners. I'm generally not a fan of service help with personality, but this was a great experience. We started with drinks, a mojito and a beer. The mojito was excellent and I can say we have sampled them across the city. When we mentioned that to the waitress, it turns out she had made them and proceeded to exchange notes on the perfect mojito. It's a secret (shhhhhh!) but they use raw sugar instead of simple syrup, some kind of concentrated flavor mix and fresh mint leaves that are growing in the front of the shop. She actually rounded up samples so we could try them at home - we did, wasn't as good. On to the food - Cubano and Medianoche don't look that big, but there is a lot of food inside and they are pretty filling. Very good, could have used a shot of Zatarain's Creole Mustard (but what couldn't?). There isn't a lot of opportunity to order Cubans around the city, but this is the best one I have had. Fried plantains were kind of boring. The rice and beans were delicious - next time I'm going to double up on the rice and skip the plantains. I am definitely going back, maybe lunch today. $50 for food, drinks, tip and complementary mojito ingredients.

Yelp
Since I am from South Florida, Cuban cuisine is just a part of my culture. Being in Metairie I was starting to feel a little deprived and so I sought out a place to fill that void in my life. With a little searching, I discovered Churros Cafe and headed to the small restaurant to get some food. Located in a strip mall, visually it left much to be desired so I found it best to just grab my food and go, although next time I will probably dine in. It seems that they specialize in Cuban sandwiches but offer Empanadas and simply things like soups and salads. In addition to that, they also have daily lunch specials. I happened to go when the special for the day was Cuban Steak with Red Beans and Rice. I was surprised that they did not have black beans and instead red beans but since red beans are such a staple in New Orleans, I wasn't too surprised. The food was good and met my expectations. The steak was tender and the flavor of the food overall was on point. I also ordered a side of plantains. They were tasty and sweet, I just don't like when they are cut so thick. I finished off my meal with Churros. These were some really amazing Churros! They claim to make them from scratch and my mouth agreed. They were great and would have been even greater had I had some chocolate to go with it. Although the food isn't what I would call "authentic" Cuban food, with the Southern twist, it created a nice take on Cuban Cuisine that I enjoyed. I cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
I can't believe this place has been here for 17 years and I never knew about it! BEST CUBAN FOOD IN ALL OF NOLA!
