The Definitive Styles of Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"In Rolando Village, Chuy’s boasts a mind-blowing menu of nearly 40 different burritos and turns out a fine adobada burrito: pork marinated in ground chiles, herbs, spices, and citrus, grilled on a flat top, then rolled into a flour tortilla with guacamole and salsa as a nod to Tijuana transformed by the taco-shop tradition." - Bill Esparza

Bot a bad place. Paul was very welcoming and cordial, he has great customer service! The food was pretty good. Kind of on the spicy side but it was expected. Well definitely try them again!

Google
We tried the Chika Chika Boom Boom and the Chuy Changa, followed by the most amazing Tres Leches Cake. Every single item was worth the hype! The portions were generous, the flavors were spot on, and everything was so filling and delicious. Definitely a must-visit spot!

Chuy's Sterling, VA - Restaurant Review (Mother's Day Lunch) wait for later that day. 21365 Epicerie Plaza, Sterling, VA 20164 Date of visit: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Time: 1:30 PM Overall impressions: Since it was Mother's Day, I thought it would be very crowded. But it wasn't. It was quite full, but not crazy. Lots of takeout orders, I really liked that they had a bar separate from the main room and a large terrace. *** This review is based on my personal opinion and experience as a consumer and chef *** ** Welcome from team members: 10/10 ** Server in charge: 10/10 (Paola, super attentive to details and made me feel good) Food ratings (0-10, with 10 being the best): ** Cheese: 7/10 Blend of melted cheese, green chile, and ranchero sauces (there's another one I like better) ** Chicken tacos: 8/10 Good flavor, the only thing a little dry. ** Beef Burrito 8/10 It was good ** Creamy Green Chile Chicken: 10/10 Roasted chicken and cheese with creamy green chile sauce and a drizzle of avocado crema ** Combo Fajitas: 10/10 Chicken and beef, I liked it and recommend it (the portions are generous) Even though it's a chain restaurant, it wasn't bad, and I would definitely try it sometime later, or maybe if you want food for a get-together with friends. If you don't want to cook, I always end up cooking when my friends invite me over. Lol.

Very tasty first time I've been to one of these great staff I had a lot of fun

Google
Got take out. The food itself was what you'd expect from a chain Mexican place. The curbside system doesn't work well where you're told to check on and they'll bring the food out, they do not. We waited too long to find out that you're better off just going in.

Mark H.

Google
Sat down after waiting at the front with no host/hostess, and the first thing server told us was “JuSt So YoU kNoW, yOu NeEd To Be SeAtEd By ThE fRoNt.” This was a younger person with curly black hair. So much attitude. There was no sign and the restaurant was almost empty. Thankfully our server was super kind.

Google
Chuy's is an old standby for Tex-Mex. This is one of the better locations in the area. It's relatively clean, service is usually pretty good, and they don't skimp on the portions. It's a good value for what it is, and that's solid, middle-of-the-road Tex-Mex. Occasionally, they'll mess up an order, or forget to bring you a side that you ordered or something like that, but nothing egregious. Sometimes, the food is even really good - like steak fajitas cooked perfectly medium, and a fair amount of it, too. It's a good crowd-pleasing go-to option.

Google
The food was tasty and flavorful, overflowing with herbs and spices. The dishes were not just delicious, but they were also very aromatic. Great salsa.

Yelp
Went for lunch and got seated right away with no wait. We were served fresh chips and salsa to start. Ordered the fajitas and Chicka Boom -- both were delicious and generously portioned. Finished with tres leches for dessert, which was the highlight -- fresh, moist, and absolutely delightful!

Yelp
Came for dinner with a teachers group and did not have a good experience. One of our food orders was delivered so late that all the other members of our party finished their food while the last item came a good 10 mins after they had finished, and to make matters worse they cooked the wrong food item. I asked for the manager and the waiter said that the manager was too busy to come. So not so good yet expensive food and horrible customer service. Also the place is very loud, not very well setup and badly organized. In a nutshell, the place was chaotic even for a Friday evening. Not recommended at all !!

Yelp
Gosh! I really enjoy this chain restaurant! We had a craving for fresh salsa and homemade chips. Gone are the days where you could self serve chips. BUT those chips are still here. We enjoyed "shamelessly" about 3 baskets of fresh chips. Then we ordered food! Gotta love those giant nacho platters and the variety of appetizers. Hubby enjoyed his food platters. Service at the bar is outstanding! Thanks to those patient bar servers. Ambiance is nice with lots of TVs in the bar. Parking is plentiful.

Yelp
Although I'm generally not a fan of Tex-Mex, this is possibly the best one I've been to in the area. The prices are fair, the food options and spice level vast, and the atmosphere is also nice; it has that diner vibe. Yes service is okay and could be more consistent, but the boom-boom sauce and veggie tamales were great!
google avatar

Yelp
We had a craving for Chuy's chips! They make them fresh several times a day. Long gone are the self serve chip bar. The bar staff was great. He indulged us with several baskets of chips and salsa. The salsa was HOT! It was delicious. After those delicious baskets of chips I wanted a simple meal. Enter the ground beef burrito. It was hefty and very tasty. I do love a good chain restaurant. Staff was very accommodating. He provided lots of drink refills as well as those baskets of chips. The bar area ambiance is fun and wide open!

Yelp
My wife and I went to Chuy's for lunch today. Glad we got there right as they opened at 11am because the restaurant filled up afterwards pretty quickly. Our server was very quick to bring us a basket of homemade chips and 5 different types of salsa. Plus, when she brought our meals, it was with a warning of the extremely hot plates. My wife ordered a taco entree and I ordered chicken enchiladas. Portions were generous. The music seemed a bit too loud for me. However the food was good and easy to pay via the QR code on the receipt paper. I left a cash tip on the table.

Yelp
Came to restaurant on Black Friday with a family of 4. We were greater by freshly staff & our server Chris (who mentioned he was kinda new . He was professional, helpful with menu selections, & did a great job! Food was yummy, fresh, and flavorful.

Yelp
Really love this place. Food consistently good. Small error on order and quickly rectified with a solution that I was happy with. Very much recommend. Staff and servers also friendly.

Yelp
I love Chuy's and this one was great. This is the middle ground for my friend and I to meet since she lives in Maryland. I did a margarita swirl of strawberry and another pink one that is the special this month. My friend got the tortilla soup and it's broth based. She also got the Chicken nachos while I had chicka boom boom which is always my go too.

Yelp
Having passed by this restaurant many times, this was my first visit to Chuy's. We arrived around 4:00PM which was during Happy Hour (i.e., 3:00PM to 6:00PM on the day we were there). We had the cheese dip and a small portion of the avocado dip along with lemonade. My wife had the shrimp tacos and I had the taco and enchilada platter. All were good and at a reasonable price for 2024. One small bit of Spanish/English humor: The bathrooms are marked as: "El Mens" and "La Womens" and "La Family". There are handicapped parking spots near the entrance was great for those of us with (temporary) mobility issues. We plan to return as it was, as the British say, "Good value for the money".

Yelp
I have always passed this restaurant but for some reason never stopped in until today for lunch. I sat at the bar and was promptly greeted by the bartender Nina. I told Nina that it was my first time dining at the restaurant and that I may have questions to which she told me wasn't a problem at all. Upon looking over the menu I noticed they had a section called "Sauces" so I asked Nina a few questions about how she recommended I narrow things down to pick the best one for my salad and she said she would do me one better and bring out samples of each of the sauces for me to try to determine which I liked best (& you can literally add 95% of them to your meals for free). Once the array of sauces arrived Nina literally explained each of them in detail for me and how they were made, WOW! I wound up actually liking all of them but loved about 4 and decided to keep them to add onto my Mexi-Cobb Salad (which was a deliciously fresh and filling salad). My overall experience far exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be back to try more traditional Mexican entrees of course topped with lots of sauces :)

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about Chuy's. My wife and I have visited Chuy's on a few Friday nights to celebrate the end of the week. They have a pretty good happy hour with discounts on drinks and appetizers. On our last visit, we decided to try one of the happy hour dips; the Boom Boom Pow (yes, that's really the name, but more on that later). Something about it didn't quite taste right, and the center was a bit cold when it was supposed to be hot. My wife also spent the meal swatting at gnats flying around the booths. We told the waitress about the bugs, but she kind of shrugged and did nothing about it. I guess they're part of the ambience. My wife always orders the beef fajitas. She learned after our first few visits that if you don't ask for them "medium", Chuy is going to put them in the blast furnace and ruin your meat. Since learning this trick, her fajitas have been better prepared. If anything else, they give you a healthy portion of fajitas. And....they are served loud style. Sizzling'!!! Just like Chi Chi's used to do!! For me, I always go for the Elvis Presley Memorial platter. Nothing fancy here, as it is simply a pumped up enchilada platter with a nifty name. I have no clue what Elvis has to do with Tex Mex, but OK. At Chuy's, the king is being memorialized in a plate full of meat and cheese. Reliable Tex Mex...nothing more, nothing less and no blue suede shoes. Two things to keep in mind about Chuy's. Number one is that there is a lot of salt and fat in their food. This is Americanized Tex Mex and they go full on with the sodium. And I mean full on. If you are on a low salt diet, Chuy's ain't for You'y. And if you think I'm kidding...just go ahead. The second thing I learned is never trust the Boom Boom Pow if something seems to be amiss. Because there is going to be a different kind of Boom Boom Pow later. Just sayin...I didn't feel well all the following day. I wish Chuy would put the appetizer through the same blast furnace the fajitas go through. Sorry Chuy, but you are losing a few stars.. There were hardly any customers in the restaurant when you couldn't find the time to fully cook the dip. There is no excuse for that, especially when there is no hurry. Even though your food is salty, it is still respectable franchised Tex Mex. However, it is not OK to serve undercooked anything. Ever. Period.

Yelp
I love Chuy's. Even though it is a chain, they have some of the best Tex-Mex if had (outside of Texas :) Their complimentary chips are super thin and crispy and not oily. Their salsa is nice and fresh and additionally you can ask for any of their signature sauces free of charge! My favorite entrees there are their chicka-chicka boom-boom enchiladas, vegetarian enchiladas, Chuychanga. Their signature boom-boom sauce and the deluxe tomatillo sauces are must trys. Chuy's is also very welcoming of substitutions and modifications, making it very vegetarian friendly. Highly recommended this casual restaurant if you're in the mood for Tex-mex food!

Yelp
Restaurant environment was good. Service was excellent. The water was prompt to bring us the food. She was excellent. The lighting was great. I'm not too sure about food. I had Comida deluxe entrée and beef burrito. The sauce really didn't have any taste to it. I was expecting more of a traditional Mexican food, but it looks like it was Americanized. I am not sure whether I will come here again.

Yelp
Good food and great service! I come here once a month with a meetup group and we sit in the private room. Our server is excellent and takes care of all of our food needs. The food is tasty and well prepared. The margaritas are good and potent especially the frozen strawberry and mango, which are my favorite. I usually get the fajitas but on my most recent visit had the soft tacos with ground beef and all of the fixins, refried beans and rice. It was good and filling. All in all I really like Chuy's in general and especially the private room in this location. Highly recommend!

Janani S.

Yelp
Everything here was very bad except for the soft tacos. My complaints are the following: 1: The Mexican bean and rice was very bland 2: The service was horrible. It took them five minutes to get two glasses of water 3: I don't understand why everyone likes the boom-boom sauce. To me, it was really bad Those are my complaints As I said, the only good thing here that I ate were the soft tacos. I sincerely think that you can get a better meal at your own home. That is my review. I hope that this restaurant can improve and I also hope that other restaurants will not stoop to their level.
google avatar

Dorothy S.

Yelp
We lived in Texas most of our life so we knew what kind of Mexican food we liked and then we started to look around here. We have lived in many other states so we know how hard it can be to find the kind of food we like but to make ugly comments like some do is totally uncalled for. We truly enjoy your food and if I had my way I would eat at your restaurant at least once a week.
google avatar

John C J.

Yelp
Ordered a quatro formaggio pizza again. This is the second time the bottom was burnt. I won't order a food from them a third time.
google avatar

Tyla M.

Yelp
Enjoyed our dinner on Chuy's large patio for outside seating. The enchilada sauce was cheesy and flavorful, highly recommend their Boom Boom sauce. Best touch as to any tex-mex establishment is the chips and salsa were bottomless. Kind and easy going waitstaff to top it all off. Overall recommend grabbing a quick lunch or dinner if your feeling like tex-mex.
google avatar

Arpreet K.

Yelp
The server was great and attentive! The food came out quickly. I ordered the Panchos and chicken tacos. Love the refried beans!

Adam S.

Yelp
Good cheap, Tex mex food. Always has reservations available during most times of the day.

Mary B.

Yelp
One of the hosts/servers, Paul, was so helpful and so kind! He was very efficient, friendly, and he had great energy throughout the evening. He was super attentive and was there whenever we needed - we were glad to have him helping us out.

Teresa C.

Yelp
Horrible !!! Worst place !!! The steak fajitas were all fat !!! Small servings and slow staff that disappeared all the time
google avatar

Joann M.

Yelp
Not sure why this location has issues.... Food as expected when compared to other locations that said.... When you order everything at once... drinks and lunch... soda fast... food comes up in a reasonable time... ohhhhh where is the margarita... we already had to ask for salt/pepper twice as hubby wanted for the salsa... had to finally get the manager... she had to get remade ... she had remade...server overwhelmed was her response???? Yes he was running but dining room not super filled.... They use runners in the kitchen perhaps they need to in the bar ...... Get check and there is a pay yourself option... however that doesn't work.... Last time hubby thought drink was very watered down... Sorry sterling guess I'll just go to the Fairfax location... you guys just seem to have issues which is not to the standards I expect from this chain we like!
google avatar

Alissa C.

Yelp
My family tried chuys in Texas which is where this chain restaurant originates and it was fantastic. So we were pretty excited to try this place. Unfortunately, chuys in VA is not the same. The menu is completely different and is like any other generic Mexican chain. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad, it's just not *as* good as the TX version. The chips are crispy, light and delicious. The salsa nice and fresh and the chicken moist. Also, what Mexican restaurant doesn't sell margaritas in a pitcher? Chuys. Lame.
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
I've had "okay" experiences before here, but not this evening. I arrived 10 minutes before wife and daughter and ordered a Happy Hour margarita. After they arrived, my wife ordered a different margarita. One arrived so I started drinking it. Long story short, they messed up the order, I drank her's, no big deal. My wife tried to reorder hers, gave up, went to the bar. Food was mediocre at best, daughter ordered a chicken quesadilla, received cheese, but we were too worn out to try to replace it. My crispy taco could not be picked up, as they placed it in the beans. I had to eat with a fork.
google avatar

Joshua D.

Yelp
Hadn't been in years and never really enjoyed the dining in experience. Their catering is fine if you're just getting taco meat for a large group. But woof, the service was lackluster, the seating is super cramped, and the overall larger menu is just meh. A lot of bland, very similar options that are basically just cheese-smothered flavorless items. They could really use a menu overhaul and some spicier Mexican dishes.

Skipper R.

Yelp
Jumbo Fried Stuffed Jalapeño Peppers Now thru 8 Sep at Chuy's in Sterling Stuffed with white chicken meat or with cheese. You can ask for a salad instead of the rice and beans. Hot jalapeño dip is great on everything! You get two gigantic stuffed peppers. We had a very enjoyable lunch! Sat outdoors under a big umbrella! Waiter attentive!
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Muy rica comida, me gusto mucho sus enchiladas, son únicas, el nombre es chicka chicka bom bom El server muy amable. Recomendado mucho. Don't hate. Ate.
google avatar

Anne C.

Yelp
Chuy's is a family favorite. Their food is excellent and so is their service. I bought a few shirts of theirs a few years back and still wear them! The interior is nicely decorated and they have tables of all different sizes. The most recent time I visited, the food came out quickly despite us having a table of 6 and was delicious. I'm sure we will be back soon!
google avatar

Jerry B.

Yelp
We're a little delayed w/ our review but based on Robert M. review it doesn't look like Chuy's is improving. Our experience was similar, slower service/longer wait times, server issues but it was happy hour around 5:30pm so we understood that. The restaurant was clean and orderly during our visit, bathrooms as well, some tables needed cleaning which would speed up things. We did have a few boo boos from the kitchen, but everything fell apart when we brought these boo boos up to the server. Her whole attitude changed and was even unpleasant talking with her. Unfortunately we had to speak with the manager about the server and he assured us that he would handle things. We did receive compensation for our experience which we appreciated and we assured the manager that we would be back one day. Hopefully things will improve as we do visit the Fairfax Chuy's occasionally with no issues.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Had dinner here with a friend and my daughter. The restaurant was kind of crowded, but there was space at the bar so we sat there. Along with chips and salsa to start, I had a Tito's Cherry Limeade and it was perfection! Just the right blend of sweet and tart. Our food came out pretty quickly. We all liked what we ordered: I enjoyed the Deluxe Chicken Enchiladas and it was very flavorful. Will definitely dine here again when in the area and craving TexMex.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
The food has gotten much better. We have a server that we really like, her name is Jamie, and she is very good to the group that we have shown with 20 or more people she is fabulous!! Wish they stayed open later with the bar though.
google avatar

Libby F.

Yelp
I was here in February after accompanying my friend with her car buying adventure. It was bustling, but we were seated right away. The complimentary salsa and chips were great while we waited for our entree. It took a while, but it was so worth it. I had their cheese enchiladas, my standard order besides quesadillas. They were just $12.29 with rice and beans. Cheaper than all other places I've been to in recent times. My friend liked her entree too. I just learned their Rockville location, closer to me has permanently closed. Such a shame. This location is too far for me to frequent.

Angel D.

Yelp
Love the food, however the last few times I've been the customer service has been unacceptable. Whether it's calling me after I've arrived home to tell me they gave me the wrong order asking me to come back or the most recent instance of waiting 30min for a curbside order only for me to call to let them know I was still waiting and they just forgot about me leaving me on hold for over 30min before I just hung up.I ended up walking into the restaurant for it to be relatively slow. Lackluster employees, managerial staff and customer service
google avatar

Preeti S.

Yelp
Went there on a weekend evening. The complimentary nachos are good. But other than that, the food is pretty mediocre and lacked in flavor. Had the Chicken Fajitas. The chicken was very bland and dry.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Always my first choice for the best Mexican food! No matter the location, consistent quality food and outstanding, friendly service. And without a doubt their Chick-a-chick-a-Boom-Boom is the best.
google avatar

Neha S.

Yelp
Chuys is my friends favorite restaurant so I had to give it a try. They first serve you with chips and a side of 2 sauces including a pico and jalapeño sauce. The first time around I had their nachos appetizer which was super filling and made more for a meal but it was spicy and tasty and I had their "big as to face" burrito with chicken and boom boom sauce. I did not like the chicken in this burrito very much as it lacked flavor. If it wasn't for the boom boom sauce I wouldn't have enjoyed the burrito altogether. This is the second time I've come here for their "big as yo face burritos" and I got the kids meal version this time as I wasn't very hungry. I got just the beans and cheese version with boom boom sauce again. I loved this burrito this time around. The rice was also pretty tasty and soft. The service here was very quick and our server was very kind. I would definitely come back here as the boom boom sauce is to die for. It's made fresh and a very unique flavor that's crave-worthy.
google avatar

Kendall C.

Yelp
The tacos were great and the chips and queso and ranch dipping sauce were good too. The staff was nice. Drinks took a little to come out because the bar was backed up but the outdoor patio was great
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Poor service. Hostess had to ask her coworkers to do everything. I get she was likely in training but it was bad. What appeared to be the manager berated her coworker in front of us. Tried to seat us at a dirty table and i asked to move. Panchos were good. Salsa and nachos are spiiccccy with lots o' jalapeno. They forgot the dressing for my friends salad. Had to ask for drink refills on water. My chicken soft tacos were good. They were out of tres leches so we couldnt try dessert. Friend said her taco salad was not good, chicken was cold, and she is familiar with this chain. She said this location is not representative of what Chuy's normally provides. Would not return.
google avatar

Jersey M.

Yelp
The service here has absolutely collapsed. It is awful. It is slow. It is unpardonable. It is unpleasant. Tried to go two weeks ago, and despite there being open tables, was told by an empathetic host that due to a lack of wait staff, it would be a half hour wait. Strange, but okay. We leave. Try again a few days later, and the service was genuinely awful. Ten minutes to be greeted at the table, another 5 for chips, another 10 for water. No refills. Fifteen minutes for the check. Food is solid as always. But the worst was how lazy the wait staff were. Tall guy with ear ring? Just walked in circles. Lady on the floor? Kept talking to a table of 8, assumably her family. Nobody seemed interested in actually helping. Pay more Chuys, and motivate your workers. Please.
google avatar

Gae D.

Yelp
the steak burrito is a great meal if your hungry! I always get it with " boom boom " sauce and pour some of their creamy jalapeño sauce on it as well. only " downfall " that some people might not like is it's only filled with steak but I enjoy it so much! come with rice and beans as well. the only thing that made it a 4 star review for me was the quesadilla my fiancé ordered was very greasy and not good in my opinion we both didn't take more then 2 bites from it. the steak burrito with the sauces I mentioned is 10/10 in my book
google avatar

Susanna B.

Yelp
The place is pleasant but our entrees had so little flavor. Was surprised that an otherwise bland salsa had super spicy seeds in it.

Solène S.

Yelp
Wow where do I begin. We have our go to restaurant, this time with it being so far we decided to try something new. Chuys was on our way home. Not only was the food EXCELLENT (we had the steak burrito and fajitas) but with it being our first time, they surprised us with an assortment of sauces to try to choose our meal. The atmosphere and service was the best part. Sunshine was amazing, I hope you get the chance to have her as your waitress and just as amazing was the manager who took the time to welcome us and check in to ensure that we enjoyed the food and had a great experience. Both were extremely friendly and made the experience even better. Kudos to them! We will definitely be back and for those of you who have never tried it and are looking to test out a new restaurant, we definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Dixie T.

Yelp
Always a favorite for us, we miss TexMex since leaving home. Very happy to have a chain like Chuy's in unexpected states like FL, AR, VA. We love the creamy jalapeno dip and the thin chips (TX style) if you enjoy dessert, their tres leches cake is simply delightful!

Debbie E.

Yelp
Was totally shocked to see a mouse in the restaurant when sitting at our booth. Called for the manager and all she did was blame it on the delivery team from the night before for leaving the door open all night. Didn't even offer to comp our meal, just asked if she could get us anything else. Waiter was great, too bad I can't say the same about the manager.
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
This was our second time there. We had no wait on an early Saturday evening even with a party of 7. Our waiter was good, but not great. The food was very flavorful. There was just the right amount and all 7 of had a great meal and desserts. After 2.5 hours we noticed we had lost track of time and gave up our table. Even on a busy Saturday evening they did not push us out. They are very high on my list of area restaurants. Enjoy your meal and the restaurant.
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
The atmosphere was eclectic and noisy, metal palm trees next to aged family photos. Also to add to the craziness the music playing didn't match the menu, top forty playing when you might expect ranchero, or a nice Latin folk song. The staff was friendly and the service was good. The servers were very diverse and this was nice, I was surprised that when I asked about the photos my waiter had no clue about there history. I asked my waiter for a suggestion and I was directed to the items on the menu in green which indicated they were popular choices. The food was disappointing but eatable. The food looked prefabricated, it had little to no flavor. The only saving grace was that the price for the meal was great. I don't need to return.

Georgina P.

Yelp
The food is ok and could be better but I added a star for the sauce the chuy sauce. The service was good. But not as good as others.
