10 Best Houston Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"This family-friendly mainstay has been going strong for over 30 years, with locations all over the state, though each one has a bit of charm all its own. As the owners like to say, “If you’ve seen one Chuy’s, you’ve seen one Chuy’s.” A great place to spend a weeknight sharing tacos, guacamole, and queso with the whole family or your closest friends, Chuy’s also has a dizzying array of signature cocktails, including their Texas Martini, made with tequila and jalapeño-stuffed olives." - Marcy Franklin

Google
One of the best places for Mexican food. I loved it. Service is really nice. The ambiance is good. We had something show in pictures I don't remember. We were really full by that dish. Chips were unlimited. Their salsa was too good. If I ever went to that place again that for that salsa only. That was really good. Overall experience is good.

Google
Great place. Excellent food, superb service, very reasonable prices. We had a group of ten and our server took care of everyone perfectly. Really enjoyed the automobile wheel covers on the ceiling; clever off-beat touch. Well-done Tex-Mex decor and atmosphere of the entire facility. Excellent drink menu. Happy hour M-F PM 4-7.

I had the absolute best time at Chuy’s, and a major part of that was our waiter, Katherine. She is a little baby angel. Genuinely kind, hilarious, and so real. she has kind energy and is a total vibe Katherine didn’t just serve 💅🏽, she made us feel welcome. She has great recommendations and impeccable timing. We had margaritas, we were laughing, and honestly? I don’t think we stopped smiling the whole time. Give that girl a raise, a crown, and maybe a margarita too!

Josh was outstanding! He handled our party of 7 with such professionalism and ease. From start to finish, he was friendly, attentive, and incredibly patient, exactly what you hope for in a great dining experience. Every detail was covered, and not once did he seem overwhelmed or rushed. Josh’s service was top-tier, and his ability to manage a large group with such grace deserves serious recognition. Thank you, Josh, for making our meal at Chuy’s so enjoyable!

Google
went here for lunch while in town to see family & the food, per usual was amazing. but our server was amazing. i wish i remembered her name— i think like alecia or audrey or angie. BUT she was so nice and kind. 🫶🏽

Google
Marissa was great and did an amazing job taking care of my friends and me. She made sure we never ran out of drinks and chips and dips! She was so friendly and really enhanced our evening!

Google
Love the atmosphere and the staff. They made us feel right at home. The food was delish and the strawberry swirl margaritas was good but could've been stronger, lol. Overall love this place will visit again, especially on father's day everything was packed but they had no waiting time and we had 14 people.

Google
Katherine was awesome! Super friendly, on top of everything, and just had a great vibe overall. She made us feel welcome right away and kept everything running smooth the whole time we were there. Gave great suggestions and checked in just the right amount—not too much, not too little. Seriously one of the best servers I’ve had in a while. Thanks for making our night even better, Katherine!

Yelp
Service here is always great even on a super busy night when we went. Food is good for texmex when you're just craving some Mexican food their margaritas are always good here as well Overall it is definitely a place to come if you have never been especially with their chips and salsa one of the main things that keep brining us back here

Yelp
Swung by for dinner recently with a group of people who absolutely LOVE chuys. I had not been back for three years but decided it was worth trying the beloved Tex Mex restaurant again. We got a round of vegetarian chimichangas with boom boom sauce. The food was quite good and fresh. I requested to add some bell peppers but I believe out server may have been slightly new bc I was sent Serranos instead. It was a bit spicy, but fine! We also got their tres leches cake which was HUGE but delicious. I'll def be back to try some other options to form.

Yelp
I love Chuy's, who doesn't! The green enchiladas, the nachos, the salsa and chips, the drinks! Parking is ok at this location. Price point is reasonable and the food is tasty. I judge a texmex based on the salsa and chips Their take out game needs improvement. Like make sure you give chips and salsa especially when the customer orders and extra pint. ‍ Hubs didn't check the bag, so I guess that's on him-next time he will.

Yelp
Hello Everyone I really enjoyed this restaurant. It was very good but the only thing that went bad was when I seen Ash Trevino. Like OMG I NEVER KNEW I WOULD SEE HER and guys it true her nunu stink.

Yelp
I tried chuys for the first time in Houston in upper Kirby. They are a big Tex Mex chain with multiple locations. I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Tex Mex, when I was in San Antonio I would only try tacos. They give you complimentary chips with salsa and a dip that tastes like ranch. I could snack on chips and salsa all day, they're pretty addicting. For some reason I thought their menu would be huge but it was actually pretty short and simple. I ordered the steak burrito, which was topped in green hatch chile sauce. The steak was perfectly tender and had a somewhat smoky flavor to it. The sauce added a little spice as well. I didn't know what I was expecting but I ended up liking this dish. It also comes with a side of refried beans, rice, and some veggies. The portion is pretty big for the price you're paying for. My friend got the chicka chicka boom boom enchiladas and they loved it. I still prefer to eat other cuisines compared to Tex Mex but I liked what I tried here

Yelp
we come to Chuy's quite often. The service today was exceptional. Emma did a fantastic job. One of the best service experiences I have had in a long time and I am 60 years old. She was spot on with the food and service and a great smile. We feel very blessed. thank you, Emma. this was at the Chuy's in the Vintage off of 290 in Houston.

Yelp
Came here since my friends recommended this as an authentic Tex-Mex and it was packed to the brim on a Friday night. Super family friendly. Got the world famous enchilada (boom chicka) and it was huge portion size w a delicious creamy sauce. We also got a steak burrito which also was very enchilada-esque vs a classic burrito; however, I much preferred the steak burrito over the enchilada. Table ordered a virgin pina colada that just came in a regular glass and looked a little sad. Guacamole could use slightly more seasoning as well Overall well run and streamlined. Great service and decent food. Will def be back!

Yelp
Our regular weekend starter! Came in got seated right away- ample parking if you get there earlier. Popular meeting place for HH and affordable. Quick, friendly service. Great jalapeño ranch dip and thin -warm chips. Usually can't finish what I order so I have another meal later- better the next day too! Modpodge decor- other locations have same interior and similar menu.

Yelp
I have only been to Chuy's a small handful of times and it's a hit or miss. I had seen pics of the dish I got, which made me give it another try since my first displeased try of it in 2017 at the Webster location. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas with Boom Boom Sauce and double rice. The chicken enchiladas like the first time I just mentioned had shredded chicken that was rather tougher to cut instead of being really tender. It was flavorful to an extant at least. The sauce was definitely better this time with a more prominent green chili, broccoli aroma to it. It was creamy and seasoned enough. The rice was doughy and decent. The service was very good.

Yelp
I F'ING LOVE CHUY'S!!!! I love their "New Mexican Martini" (shaken not stirred). Their frozen margs are pretty righteous as well. I could bathe in their jalapeño ranch. Chips and dips to last you all night...but then...ya still gotta eat!! I used to swear by their Chicka Chicka Boom Boom enchiladas. The last time I had them they weren't great...so I went for the Elvis Presley memorial plate. The only thing I remember is that Elvis must have existed once and became reincarnated because I saw heaven while eating this. Melted cheese enchiladas, retried beans and rice, tacos...what's not to be a hunk a hunk a burning love? My husband loves their face sized burritos. And I cannot stress their Margarita game is ON POINT. Chuy's is a chains but when the locals tell you to go...you go.

Yelp
If I rated on food alone, I would probably give this 3.5 stars; however, our server Josh made all the difference, so I had to bump up my experience to 4 stars. My friend and I came here because she lives in Houston and says that this is an authentic Tex Mex experience. The jalapeño cilantro dip was excellent; flavorful, fresh, and refreshing! The salsa was also great. We also ordered a small side of queso, which was plentiful and delicious! Their chips were also really tasty, light and crunchy! I wanted to pack up the leftover chips, and Josh took it to the next level by giving me a bag full with brand new salsa and jalapeño cilantro dip. For my main entree, I had the Tex-Mex enchilada, which Josh informed us they have an option with just one enchilada. This was the perfect size for my appetite. I have to say the enchilada was only ok; I've definitely had better. With Josh's recommendation, I also got a virgin pina colada. It was delicious! Not too sweet, light, and refreshing...exactly what I was hoping for. On top of the awesome service, Josh was extremely personable and friendly. It was also fun to see the kitschy decor here. From what my friend said, it is the authentic Tex Mex experience. For just the chips and dips alone, I would come back if I'm in the area again though I would likely try a different entree.

Yelp
Chuy's to me is nostalgic given that I ate at chuy's in college station with my roommates for years. Although a chain, you have to take it for what it is, a chain Tex-Mex restaurant! And honestly - for this - has great food, service at a good price. You can't beat the boom boom enchiladas and the price for a meal here is pretty great! The service is always nice and the jalapeño ranch you get for the chips is a great complimentary started!
google avatar

Yelp
our fav tex mex spot in houston! super glad we tried this the prices and amount of food were insane! for like $30 we got enough to feed a small army and it was so good
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Another solid tex mex spot. Service was good and the food came out quickly. Decent number of parking spots which is convenient. Love their green ranchero salsa! I shared the combo fajitas for 2 which probably should be marketed as fajitas for 4 -- so much food!
google avatar

Mac W.

Yelp
Food is always good and fresh. The boom boom sauce is always the start of the show for me. Drinks are good. Service is hit or miss nevertheless the food is good. Nice vibe as well good music to enjoy your meal.
google avatar

Dharmik P.

Yelp
Chuy's offers a fun, Tex-Mex vibe with solid vegetarian options. The Veggie Fajitas are flavorful and well-seasoned, while the Veggie Enchiladas with Boom Boom Sauce add a cheesy, spicy kick.
google avatar

Irene H.

Yelp
extremely quick order to go + pick up - separate door + entrance. separate back lot parking for pick up only. very friendly + helpful staff taking orders.
google avatar

Suzi S.

Yelp
Chuy's made our Civil Engineering Department's Christmas lunch at the University of Houston truly special! The food was delicious, with vibrant flavors and perfectly prepared dishes. The service was impeccable, with timely delivery and neatly packaged meals. We highly recommend Chuy's for any event - they exceeded our expectations!
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
I was here for a work event, we ordered a variety of appetizers and drinks and shared them family style. We had nachos, queso and other goodies. I am a big fan of the jalapeño ranch, so good! The manager took very good care of us. The service was excellent. The ambience was as fun and relaxing as you would come to expect from Chuy's.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Some of the best Tex-Mex in Houston! I've loved this place for years and it never disappoints!! The chuychanga and enchiladas are great, plus the creamy jalapeño sauce is amazing! The frozen margaritas are always great too.
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
This is for the cheese enchilada score only. sauce is lacking flavor and everything about these cheese enchiladas is opposite what Tex Mex should be. Enchilada score one out of five. stay away on the cheese enchiladas Service great Cheese Enchiladas... No.
google avatar

Nikhil R.

Yelp
This restaurant has always been my favorite Tex-Mex in other cities, but having it in the state where it came from is different. The food quality is even better than I remember. First of all, make sure to get the creamy jalapeño dipping sauce. That is non negotiable. It's the best of both worlds, combining a ranch-like dressing with a little kick from chopped jalapeños. It is not only great with the complimentary chips, but also on top of any item on the menu. We also grabbed a queso which, while I was skeptical at first, I quickly changed my mind as the warm and spicy cheese complemented the cold weather perfectly. I went with their mixed fajitas which includes beef and chicken. You will be hard pressed to find juicier, tender fajitas anywhere else. The chicken was so soft and still moist, and the beef was cooked to a medium well consistency. There are also a lot of peppers and onions that are sautéed well. The fajitas come with super soft and freshly made flour tortillas, rice and beans, and taco toppings like cheese, guacamole, lettuce, and tomato. Overall the experience was fantastic and service was an A+.
google avatar

Terry W.

Yelp
Service and ambiance were fine. Food was not bad, nothing special. But the corn tortillas were possibly the worst I've ever had.
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
Good Service but food was dry and water was hot but besides that all around cool experience
google avatar

Consuelo I.

Yelp
Good food. Good prices. Great service. Unfortunately they don't accept dogs in their covered patio. If they did that it would be perfect
google avatar

Huyen C.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Wednesday at 12. It wasn't that packed & we were seated right away. My friend & I both ordered the bean & cheese burrito. It's absolutely huge but super good. The ranchero sauce & chips were yummy. Service was great. We also ordered mojitos & a pina Colada. The mojito was alright; nothing special. Would recommend!

Daphne G.

Yelp
Ordered the combo fajitas and didn't receive none of the condiments to dress them. No lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, or cheese. Driving back to get these would pointless because my fajitas would be cold by the time I return home. When picking up curbside just make sure you check your order. Prices are too high not to receive everything you paid for....ugh
google avatar

Azsha H.

Yelp
My goodness this was the best food I've had since visiting Houston! The staff provided amazing service that was so welcoming and accommodating! The food was so tasty and perfectly prepared! The ranch type of dipping sauce was to die for!!!! The atmosphere was so fun and friendly. I can't wait to come back!!!

Alden B.

Yelp
The driest Tres Leches you've ever had in your life--consists of dry (unsoaked) cake fresh from a box with a dollop of cream. Disgusting.
google avatar

Chollett J.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I travel to Houston frequently, Chuy's is my now go-to on each visit! The guacamole isn't fair, but everything else I tried was yummy to my tummy!
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
I overall had a good experience here. The restaurant was clean and the service was good. I got the Elvis Presley platter and the food was good. The flavors weren't amazing or anything but I'm more blown away by how big the portion was for the price. The platter was just under $13 and it is good for 2 meals for me. You also get complimentary chips and salsa so... you can get so much food here and not even spend that much money. I've been to other Tex med restaurants and they've been much more expensive so I think I might have to frequent chuys more often!
google avatar

Sankit G.

Yelp
I came with a friend because I love TexMex and I love Chuy's. To start we were served complimentary fresh made chips. I like the chips because they are right out of the fryer and warm to the table, and compared to other places chips at Chuy's are very thin. So you can get more of salsa and guac instead of getting more carbs in each bite. We ordered frozen Margaritas to start with. I really like their house margaritas on a warm day and it feels more like a normal drink. For entrees, we ordered Steak burrito and Chicken Fajitas for one. Now if you are a normal portion eater, I'd suggest to order fajitas for one but it will serve 2 easily, cuz all the while you wait for entrees, you'll be so full with ever refilling chips and salsa. I suggest to add a side of guac to chips! Anyways coming back to fajitas, as you can see it comes with a grill of chicken, a bowl of veggies and salsa, another bowl of rice and beans, and finally a box of 3 fajitas. These is more than enough for just one person. One thing that lacked here was maybe have some hot sauce on the table so people can use it for dressing, but maybe because we were on patio it wasn't there. For the steak burrito, that is very filling as well, my friend loved it and he was so full by the time he finished half of it that he boxed the remaining half for lunch the next day. If you are new to texmex, I'd suggest you to surely try Chuy's.
google avatar

Nina K.

Yelp
Go here if you're interested in debilitating defecation the next day. The creamy salsa is not worth the pain.

Hunter H.

Yelp
A group of friends and I witnessed a very young (likely underage) crowd last weekend. There was in individual alone and throwing up outside of the bar, with no one around to assist.

Adam S.

Yelp
First of all the hostess takes us to a table and the waiter doesn't even want to wait on us start to argue with the hostess right in front of us ??? The waiter takes our order with NO hello, thank you for coming, nothing. the food was very blain, tasteless. Still the waiter upset no professionalism at all.
google avatar

Mimi T.

Yelp
One of my usual Tex mex go to places for over 5 years when my fam and I are in the mood for fajitas. I always enjoy the various rooms with different themed decor each visit. The service has always been great even during busy times. Several locations in the Houston area which is very convenient.

Teneishia B.

Yelp
I've ordered the Elvis combo on door dash twice and the food both times was amazing 10/10 will be visiting soon
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
I have been to Chuy's a countless number of times over the course of my life. It is a popular Tex-Mex option in Houston, and they have a lot of unique offerings that are a huge draw, such as the chips and salsa bar, and their number of great sauces (boom boom sauce, creamy jalapeno are awesome). I have had so many dishes on their menu, but the ones that are always great are the fajitas. Their chips are queso are also great - the chips are really thin and crispy, and always super fresh. The queso is great as well. I recently went and tried the hatch chile enchiladas, which were very good (4/5). Chuy's is a great staple in Houston, well known and always reliable. It is great for large orders or catering. Definitely get the creamy jalapeno when you go!
google avatar

Yelp
4.0 - Burrito, beef fajita 2.5 - Chicken Flauta 3.0 - Queso 2.5 - Rice 3.0 - Taco, flour, beef fajita

Yelp
I had Chuy's catered at work and it was fantastic. I had never been to one physically so this was my first time. Parking They have their own lot so not a problem at all. Ambience Very funky and random decor. Just really random. Made me feel almost uncomfortable. Even the dining area didn't feel comfortable. Service Servers are great. They were attentive and refilled our free chips and salsa. Food came out in a timely manner. Food They give you free chips, salsa, and their special sauce - good stuff. I ordered the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom Enchiladas. Portions are pretty large. I wasn't blown away by it. Maybe I'll try something next time, like their fajitas. Unless you eat a lot, you may end up taking some of your meal home. My friend ordered the Steak Burrito. She enjoyed it. Huge portion. I do not fully understand the hype. I'll give it another try someday. People love their Chuy's here.

Kirk V.

Yelp
Very rude customer service in the "to go" area seems as if they hated I was getting food to go lol.
google avatar

IRASEMA M.

Yelp
Worst Mexican food ever!!!!! This is coming from a born and raised Mexican. The coke was flat. The nachos where dry and tasteless... just terrible. All of it.
google avatar

HsiaoCheng W.

Yelp
I still have my Chuy Brown shirt from the 90's. This location is still one or my favorite ones. Before they franchised out to other states. Chips were fresh. Chuychanga was good. But the kids sauce they recommended (ranchero) still had some heat so my kid didn't really want to eat most of the chuychanga. I didn't really care for the taco salad. I was thinking I'd get a fried shell but it's just like little strips of fried tortilla. My wife always gets a salad and then after a few bites I'm forced to finish it. Some of the lettuce had brown spots which kind of turned me off (old). We got the creamy jalapeño sauce with it which I think is exactly the same sauce as the one they give you with the chips. So order another one if you want variety. The queso with beef was awesome though. Server was friendly too although I wish he came by more often to fill our water because my kid was without water twice and they weren't busy at all (it was just us and another family on a Sunday morning when it opened). These days lots of good places for Mexican food. Used to be Chuys, Ninfas and Molinas. But gone are those days.
google avatar

Yelp
My wifeys best friend was visiting us from Vermont, so we decided to show her a good Mexican place in Houston. So of course we took her to the fun, quirky Chuys, a place only Elvis could love. If you get there for happy hour, they have really good cheap margaritas! We all got a raspberry lime swirl margarita that was great. I just come for their white salsa, I can't lie I'm addicted to the salsa. If I met someone questionable on the street selling the stuff, I would buy it from they, no questions asked! Ok back to my meal, I'm not into enchiladas,so I usually just get the chicken taquitos that are nothing special. But since today my wife's best friend was in town, I was betting my wife wouldn't get mad if I ordered something more expensive. So I took the risk and ordered the steak fajitas. It comes with all the sides you would expect fajitas to come with which is great. The fajitas themselves were average tasting at best, the menu said they were marinated in line juice, but I couldn't taste it. They were also really dry, almost to the point of being overcooked. I think next time we come here I will go back to the chicken taquitos.
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst, repulsive, arrogant, disrespectful experience I have ever had with both a server and manager at a restaurant! Daryl and Cindy at your Vintage location are terrible. Bad service even worse attitude and extremely disrespectful. I would rather eat at Taco Bell than at Chuys again and I used to love them! Do not go to the Vintage Chuys.
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
I've been going to Chuys forever. Since the early 80's in Austin on Barton Springs. Ever since the pandemic, they have shortened their menu, and done away with the nacho bar in the car. I hoped at some point these would come back, but they have not. Really disappointing. I miss the green rice, and my family misses several items that seem to be long gone. I'm in a huge foodie fb group and everyone says the same thing. When is Chuys going to go back to the old menu and bring back the happy hour complimentary nacho bar? C'mon Chuys! I understand times are tough, and it's easier to have a simpler menu, but these are the things that made Chuys great! You stood apart from the rest for these things. Please don't go all corporate Chuys, or is it too late for that? I now still occasionally go to this location, but to be honest, it's not the same experience.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant holds such a dear place in my heart. I've gone here for years and don't think I've ever had a single negative experience. Anytime I'm back in Houston this is among the top places on my list to revisit. The retro interior design at Chuy's is so fun and creative and just adds to the great experience that I have when I eat here. The staff are also consistently soooo friendly and funny and on several occasions I've had unique and great conversations with them. And last but not least, the food! This place is a must for vegetarians interested in Tex-Mex! The beans are made without lard. My go to is always the big as yo' face bean and cheese burrito with half ranchero and half boom boom sauce. Also do NOT sleep on the creamy jalapeno dip that comes with the table chips!
