Where to Eat Queso in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"The only big chain included in this list — any queso map would be incomplete without the Austin-based Tex-Mex mainstay. Chuy’s spicy chile con queso is a house blend of melted cheese, green chile sauce, and ranchero sauce. A meatier option is available in the queso compuesto — the same aforementioned queso, with ground sirloin, guacamole, and pico de gallo thrown into the mix." - Delia Jo Ramsey

Delicious! Great and spacious spot. We loved the decor and general atmosphere, and the host was pretty chill. As soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted and shown a clean table. The chips were good but the real star was the dip. It reminded me of our homemade salsa from our own garden. Portion sizes were very generous with lots of flavor. We ordered the pineapple jalapeno margarita and a small rocks marg. Definitely enjoyed the jalapeno! Shout out to the waitress Zoe H who has been the best server we had on our trip so far. Will visit again!

Google
My wife appreciated their food, I did not. The soup I ordered was too salty to eat, and it was in a container large enough to feed 3 (I ordered a cup). No eating utensils in delivery bag, even though website indicates it is provided for curbside delivery. Waited in parking space for 10 minutes past the ready time, no one came out. Had to call and finally someone came out. They didn't appear to be busy (only 2 cars in curbside pick-up), and we checked in as instructed. This location is not our favorite.

Google
Great food and super attentive staff! There was a little wait before someone saw us, but it ended up being the perfect time to figure out what we wanted and put our whole order in, in one go. We were full and took home leftovers, which actually ended up being just as good! Our server was wonderful and our drinks were never empty!

Google
Wonderful tex-mex food for reasonable prices. My server (I believe his name was Kenny?) made the service more enjoyable by being extra attentive, and placing extra chips with my to go sauce. The creamy jalapeno was the highlight of the meal, it came with the chips, but I put it on everything else as well.

Google
Really enjoyed our meals. My enchiladas with rice and beans were tasty and the portion generous. Chips and salsa were fresh and delicious. Good cocktails. I believe our server was Cordelia and she was fantastic! She shared her favorite menu items, was attentive and so friendly! A+ service!!

Google
Always a great time. We sat at the bar. I had the Mexican martini and my husband had a jalapeño pineapple rita.

Google
Excellent food! I was a little skeptical at first. It is nothing special inside and there were not many visitors, BUT the food was very tasty. Try it you will like it!!

Google
Nothing better than sitting on an outside deck drinking margaritas with chips and salsa. Drinks are reasonably priced and really good. Tex Mex is not my favorite, as I prefer traditional Mexican food, but theirs is pretty good. The steak tacos were good but the meat was a little fatty. Service was excellent and the restaurant was very clean. If you enjoy Tex Mex this is a great option.

Yelp
Great food! We were able to walk from our hotel. We ate on the patio since we had our dog. Yes dog friendly. Several employees walked out to say hey to the dog. The patio is great if you like to people watch. Our server was very polite and friendly. The food came out quickly. Love all the sauces.

Yelp
Went to Chuy's in Nashville yesterday for lunch. We usually go to the Opry Mills or Cool Springs locations but we were in the area. When we arrived there was nobody at the host stand, a few ladies ahead of us waiting to get sat and then more people arrived after us. We waited a couple minutes before anyone came up and we were sat at a table. The hostess was very sweet when she finally got to us though. Misty was our server. Very sweet girl but our service could have been better. Our regular drinks took a while to come out and when they did she told us to try the cokes because the syrup might have been low. They were watered down so we had to wait some more to get them replaced. Wish she would have changed the syrup before bringing them out If she knew it was no good. Those were 3 out of the 4 regular drinks we ordered. Also ordered a frozen margarita with our first round of drinks which took even longer and when it did, it was melted. We could tell it had been sitting at the bar a while before it got dropped off. Again, she said to let her know if it was too watery and she could get it replaced. We had already waited too long for it so we decided to just keep it. Again, if she saw it was already melted by the time she got to it she could have gotten it remade before delivering it to the table. Next was the food. I ordered a chicken quesadilla for my kid but he got a regular kids quesadilla without chicken. My husband ordered a chuychanga and added fajita chicken to it. We got a regular pulled chicken chuychanga, which was pretty good! But not how we ordered it. She mentioned that the kitchen was a bit backed up and there might not have been enough chicken in the chuychanga but if we needed a side of chicken She could bring one out. Not really sure what she meant by that. It was a bit of an awkward interaction. We had already been in the establishment longer than expected so we decided to not send any food back and having to wait longer for it. I think there were preventative steps she could have taken to make our experience a bit more enjoyable. I had no problems with the green chile fried chicken I ordered which was delicious and my other son had no problems with his cheeseburger. We would gladly return to this location but would probably request a different server.

Yelp
We came here for national taco day where they give you a free entree if you are dressed like a taco. Live the fun colorful decor inside. Service was a bit slow but they seemed short staffed. Server was nice and attentive, and brought us everything we needed (extra sour cream etc) even though the dishes were technically free. Walked here so didn't need to look for parking but I believe there is paid street parking nearby.

Yelp
not real Mexican food. Vents are nasty look up when you sit in a booth drinks not good. Waiter was nice. Not a wide variety on menu. Would not go again.

Yelp
Came here recently with a friend and had an okay experience. On the bright side, our server was very kind and funny and we also received our food very quickly. Also, the restaurant has a bright, fun look inside. However, the food was meh. I got a taco salad which was fine. The meat could've been seasoned more and I would've like more guacamole on the bowl. I didn't like the queso. My friend got beef fajita tacos and there wasn't much meat in the tacos. Portion sizes were pretty decent though. Prices are a little steep for the food you get in my opinion. Overall: would prefer to try a different Mexican restaurant in the area that's more affordable or with better food than return, but service was great and obviously so is location.

Alec B.

Yelp
The service was the worst that I have ever had. Our Waiter was drunk and kept forgetting things. The food was also really disgusting. My soft tacos with beef are the worst that I have ever had.

Vic O.

Yelp
Used Doordash. The food was cold, missing items: No Quacamole, No Sour Cream, No 2nd Side Item. If that wasn't enough, the order was delayed because the Dasher was busy chasing a rabbit in my yard, delaying the order !! No one could make this sh*t up! Both DD & Chuys SUCKS !!

Les C.

Yelp
Hostess was very kind, nice smile & friendly. We were served very quickly. We drove from Hendersonville just to go to this place. Nothing good in our area. From hand made tortillas I had chicken enchiladas & a taco that was fabulous. Lots of chicken & hamburger (& not the moochie hamburger either). My wife had a chili Reanno added to her meal that she really loved. Choice of sauces were so good. Took almost an hour to get there but we definately will be back. A good restaurant is well worth the drive. A shout out to our friendly waitress. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Delicious, top-notch tacos in fresh tortillas. The menu's fairly big, and the prices are all right. Great decor and a well-rounded selection of food. The fajitas, tacos, and chips are all top-notch and round out the experience. Overall it's solid Tex-Mex I keep coming back to.

Yelp
3.5 Went for take out at the location on Church St. and got a veg enchilada with no cheese and rice/beans. Food was tasty but the enchiladas were spicy. They gave a huge bag of chips with sauces along with my order. The service was friendly and fairly quick. The restaurant was big and colourful but I only stayed at the checkout counter. There was a bar as well as a dining area.
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
Service here was so great. Ray took amazing care of us and wanted to make sure we had the best experience possible. The food was good. Portions could have been a little larger but maybe that's my bias from other Mexican restaurants I frequent. Chips were great as was the margarita. Ambiance and vibe were eclectic and fun. Definitely worth a stop in.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
I dont know what Elvis Presley has to do with Mexican food, but it was actually very good. The ground beef enchilada was amazing. Beans were very solid too. Service was very hospitable and friendly. Southern charm for sure. We were in and out due to time.
google avatar

Delanie M.

Yelp
chuys was right next to our hotel so it was a convenient stop. i know i can always find a vegan option at a mexican style restaurant. I ordered the veggie enchiladas without cheese. the beans and rice were pretty dry and the enchiladas were just okay. the chips and salsa were good and the service was good as well but there are much better food options in the area.

Yelp
Bad, just bad. They originally lost my order and couldn't find it.. then got home to soggy, burnt quesadillas. Took a bite only to find the chicken had been way overcooked so the chicken was super rubbery and just couldn't eat it. Everything about Chuy's has gone down hill. I tried this location because the last location I tried on White Bridge was also very bad.

Yelp
Went to Chuy's last night for an impromptu dinner date (just note this is more of a restaurant for groups of rowdy college students than a dinner date spot). Service was good and speedy and food was decent. I wasn't as impressed by the chicka-chicka boom-boom enchilada as I usually am. It was like -fine- but nothing special. The sauce had a glazed look I didn't love and I really wish they had mole sauce here, but alas. The meat for the fajitas was actually very tasty and cooked well. This serving (for 1) was huge! The refried beans were also good, but the tortillas were really weird was not a fan. We also got a frozen mango marg and a lime and strawberry swirl marg and gotta say wasn't a huge fan. My swirl marg was primarily strawberry, and we didn't finish them because they were soooo sweet and tasted more like a slushy than an alcoholic drink (and no this is not my first time having a frozen margarita). I would go again with a group of friends for the fun and cute aesthetic, but not exactly for the culinary experience.

Will C.

Yelp
Used to be incredible but ever since they sold to Darden, they changed all the recipes. Now the beans and rice are flavorless, the tortillas are rubbery, the tres leches tastes frozen, the salsa isn't the same...mega corporations doing what they always do: They buy a successful chain, cut corners on food costs and quality control to increase their profit margins, then throw their hands up in disbelief, wondering where all the customers went‍

Yelp
I'm a Texas girl. Chuy's white sauce runs in my bloodstream, and I get the chills when I hear a margarita shake. With that said, I'm a big fan of the Chuy's at Opry Mills. I can buy pointless shit after getting a little too spicy off of enchiladas and margaritas and then walk all that tequila off ooohing and ahhing at all the stores under this roof. Slap on your comfiest sneakers, wear your comfy pants, and tuck in. This is instant happiness, and you won't regret it.... (well, you might regret it the next day when your head hurts and your credit card is crying, but oh well...c'est la vie.)
google avatar

Zach R.

Yelp
Not worth the hype! You are packed like sardines inside and $84 for a fajitas meal for 2 is kind of steep. I just don't think I will be returning, sorry.
google avatar

Musie Y.

Yelp
Chuy's is always a great time for quick food and good prices. I think one of their best parts is the free chips and salsa and the creamy jalapeño dip that they offer as starters. I got the Chuychanga with chicken as the filling and it was decent with rice and beans. I chose the chika chika boom boom sauce which was a spicy kick. Nicely fried and it was meaty. For drinks, I got the blackberry frozen margarita and the strawberry margarita on the rocks. Good prices, but way too sweet. For large parties, you can't make reservations or call ahead even if you're 10 mins away. However, they did seat us pretty quickly.

Yelp
Always great service, awesome margaritas and chips and queso for die for!! We use to visit the one in Tally until it was closed. Surprised and so excited when we ran into this one here!!

Yelp
I am a very plain eater so I can not comment on the rice or refried beans or anything. My wife said they were food. We had lunch on a Wednesday and were seated promptly. The reataurant is sizeable, has a large bar area and can easily handle large groups. We saw multiple groups of ten or so in for lunch. The decor is standard Mexican restaurant decor but it is not over the top like some places. Also, they were not playing Mexican music overhead. It was the type of music your local "the best of the 80s, 90s, and today" radio starion would play. It was a welcome change. I ordered a regular-sized house margarita and it was nothing spectacular but it was tasty. The chips were warm and the salsa was medium-thick and had just enough bite to it. When I go to Mexican restaurants, i order a grilled chicken quesadilla with only chicken and cheese. Again, I am a plain eater. I did not see this anywhere on the menu, so I asked the waiter if they could make it for me and he said it would not be a problem. My quesadillias were good and she liked her tacos. We spent $34 for the two of us and that included $7 for the margarita. Very reasonable prices for Midtown Manhattan. This location is walking distance from many of the hotels in Midtown.

Yelp
Nothing special and the service was meh. Go to Velvet Taco, it's close and this place can't even come close.
google avatar

Omar A.

Yelp
My family and I were seated by a host that really didn't seem like he wanted to be there. We sat and waited and waited with not one staff member acknowledging that we were even there. After around 10 minutes another table was seated and they were immediately given chips and salsa. It was that point that I decided it was time to leave. Will never go back to this place again. Staff all look mad and that they don't want to be there. Avoid this place.
google avatar

K. Y.

Yelp
No Bueno. Everything's salty and bland. There is no real value as it's overpriced for what it is. Never feel good after eating it.

Glenn A.

Yelp
Another reason you should look at rating of a business, If you like crunchy tacos with more then a teaspoon of ground beef on them don't go there. Just more people with a greedy dream the don't give a rats ass about what they serve, their seasoning techniques is a lot of black pepper, all in all stay away, to many stock owner's!
google avatar

Yelp
Kinda perplexed by the negative reviews (Well, Jack must be the male equivalent of a "Karen". If your only reviews are 1-star, get a life). Been in town for a month of work, eaten here 5-6 times, always pretty consistent. I think the flavors can be a little middle of the road (salsa has been hit or miss, sometimes way too tomato forward) and I've been wanting more cheese on some things (Comida plate for example) but overall for what it is, a chain Mexican restaurant, pretty solid. Chicken tortilla soup is the best I've ever had. And the service has been consistently great. Both my servers on the floor were terrific and Kelly at the bar is great.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I was in town a few months ago on business and had lunch with my colleague . We were both very happy with our meals. I hadn't had Tex-Mex in quite a while and enjoyed the atmosphere as well.

Nancy J.

Yelp
food came out cold. server and staff were nice. very disappointed-last time we're were here the food was great. step it up Chuy!
google avatar

Bailey P.

Yelp
I have been to Chuy's a handful of times with no luck. I enjoy most Mexican food but Chuy's was always a disappointment which did not bode well because it's my boyfriend's favorite place. Their quesadillas are a big no, their chips are alright and the tacos were meh. Tonight I gave it another try and ordered the comida deluxe which came with a little bit of everything. Verdict: not too shabby! I still was not a huge fan of the beef taco or the queso dipped tostada, but the cheese enchilada and chicken flautas were great! A giant portion of food for a decent price and our waitress was very attentive and quick.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Ok so my daughter and I wanted to have a margarita while vacationing in Nashville. We saw the reviews and was on the fence about going there. We went and so were so happy we went in! Place was busy, colorful and everyone looked happy. Then we sat at the bar and then it happened, my eyes locked on a beautiful human being named Kelly, he was the bartender. He was funny, made a damned, really damned and even more damned good patron margarita! His manner with people was beyond wonderful and it's so cute that he calls people "boo". Chips, salsa and guacamole were good! In fact I am craving them right now but I live in California. I can't wait to go back! Thank you for Kelly and the wonderful visit!
google avatar

Priya K.

Yelp
We didn't know this was a chain when we first sat down since we are from out of state, but man was it good! We ordered the panchos (nachos) with fajita chicken. The chicken was tender and well seasoned. We also had the chicken flautas and chicka-chicka boom boom enchiladas. The flautas were very tasty: but the enchilada took the cake. The sauce was a spicy queso, which had a nice kick and was delicious. We also had the grande house margs, which were tasty, albeit a bit weak. Only rhint I didn't love was the homemade hot sauce, which was neither hot nor had a good flavor. Overall a great experience. Would recommend. Our waitress was also on top of things.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Place has a nice laid back vibe. Service was friendly and attentive. Salsa was good. Had the chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce. They were fine...not bad but nothing special. Prices were pretty good.
google avatar

Mateja K.

Yelp
The tacos were flavorful, filling, and delicious! We loved the quick and efficient service as well. My favorite aspect was the lovely design of the entire inside and outside of the restaurant. The authentic paintings, mosaics, and 1960s feel was adorable and really heightened our experience! We will return.

Alana O.

Yelp
This is not really a mexican restaurant, it's more TexMex and even for those standards this place is not great. You're better off going to Chipotle. However if you don't care about the food, the ambiance is lively and our server was nice. Still there's better places to go
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Always love this restaurant... for a quick bite to eat and consistent flavor Nashville is starting to get more restaurants and this is one of them a tasty Mexican food
google avatar

Manuel M.

Yelp
As soon as we entered, the hostess was very friendly. Our waitress was amazing, and had good recommendations. The mango margarita on the rocks is delicious! You constantly see people cleaning. The food was okay. The chicken was dry. The tomatillo deluxe sauce was excellent. Overall, it was a great experience, other than the food. At least the chicken, since we didn't have anything else to compare it to.
google avatar

Grant E.

Yelp
If you've been to one chuys then you've been to them all. A consistent and familiar option for some solid tex mex but there's better non chain options in the area. If you do end up here, go ahead and order the steak burrito and then contemplate why you didn't try something local.

NotLandon S.

Yelp
I got the steak burrito and it DIDNT EVEN HAVE ANY STEAK. It had like 10% steak and 90% CHEESE! the menu promised me lettuce and tomato yet the portions of these items where VERY FEW. The service was great and they did bring me a to go sprite.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Chuys is a favorite in Texas. The food is so good and they're always packed!! So when we saw a location in Nashville, we had to try it! Ordered food to-go over the phone since we thought they'd be insanely busy at 6pm on a Saturday night in downtown Nashville. After Thursday night waiting in a long line at Hattie B's just down the street, we thought to-go was smart. Upside: Was a fast and easy transaction over the phone. Downside: We were very disappointed once arriving to get the food. The staff was rude, unprofessional and curt. When the hostess was done dealing with us, she sat down and started reading her book again (they weren't packed as we suspected). The food was just okay. Fajita meat was mediocre. We got one steak and one chicken. The chips were stale and tortillas were not fresh. This is not what we've come to expect from Chuy's. Needless to say that they weren't busy for a reason and we won't be back.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
Food was ready good. Sorry I didn't get out waitress name. But damn what energy she had. This was a very short walk from out hotel. It's not are large menu like most Mexican restaurant but what we had was great. Probably the best chips I've had in a while. If we are back in the area we will be back.
google avatar

Randy R.

Yelp
The service was horrible. The food was mediocre at best. And when I told the server that we need silverware after having waited a long time after the food was delivered we got an attitude from the manager. Do not go there

Naja H.

Yelp
My friend and I visited for the first time on May 21, 2024. I had the taco and enchilada with refried beans and rice; she had fajitas with guac, refried beans and rice, sour cream and cheese. We both are ill. I violently expelled my meal and sat the throne that night and she is sick as well thru today. This is not a good first-time experience at Chuy's midtown.

Ford R.

Yelp
Service is great here. Kelly is the best bartender in Nashville. He handled a busy bar super easily all while making a great experience for the customers.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Visited Chuy's was on vacation. I liked it a lot, ambiance was very nice and service was excellent. Food was good and extremely reasonably priced (I'm going off what it would have cost me in NY). Really cool casual place.
google avatar

Shelly F.

Yelp
My favorite is the Creamy Jalapeño dip is amazing. A must for drinks and apps. I didn't eat dinner here we did margaritas and apps only. Drinks were great and so were the apps.

Nunya B.

Yelp
Fajitas for two.. includes 8 skinny pieces of beef. No worries, only cost $40! Will not order fajitas from here ever again. Hope this helps anyone looking through their menu that's craving fajitas, pick something else. (Beef is also dry as leather)
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Food was tasty and came to the table fast. Staff was friendly. Prices were reasonable and a good value.
google avatar

Raam S.

Yelp
ordered chicken burritos and guacamole tacos. Chicken burritos tasted like a pizza with lot of cheese and sauce. And chicken tasted really worst and absolutely tasteless. how the hell this restaurant got so many 5 star reviews.
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
Not somewhere I would ever chuys to go of my own accord. Pretty bland Tex Mex food. For some reason this chain which I always associate with Texas has a pretty large following especially across the Southern States. One of my Nashville friends even recommended I eat here as if it was the hottest new locally-owned place. I wouldn't say the food is awful and some things here are pretty decent - or at least they were at this location and the ones I've tried in Texas. But it wasn't memorable and considering it's a corporate chain I would try one of Nashville's many independently-owned eateries before I would come back here... unless of course I am dragged here by chain loving friends again.
