As a fan of sours, one of the West Coasts' main disappoints to me is their lack of sour beer. They prefer their IPAs, and I do not... So when searching for some places to drink while I was visiting, this place popped up. I was willing to compromise my sour beer love for some local ciders instead, because that's basically the closest I could get. My friend and I decided on a 6-cider flight to try a few of their popular choices. We opted for:
-Pacific Pineapple
-Passion Fruit Strawberry
-Blackberry Pear
-Baked Apple
-Sour Cherry
-Grand Mimosa
I enjoyed the Pacific Pineapple the best. It was sooo good, and they managed to perfectly capture the flavors of pineapple without tasting too sour. Basically the perfect marriage of sweet and sour. My least favorite was the Passion Fruit Strawberry, which tasted like a hoppy beer, and had little to no taste of either strawberry or passion fruit. The Baked Apple and Grand Mimosas ciders tasted just like what they were trying to immolate. It was actually very impressive drinking the Baked Apple cider and getting 100% of that flavor, with an equally delicious aroma. These two were probably my second and third favorites from what I tastes, with the Mimosa one actually tasting better to me than a typical Mimosa. We honestly could have easily done a secondary flight, but we were pretty beat from our half-day hike.
They have over 30 ciders on tap, and the menu is divided into an easy formula based on Sweet/Semi-Sweet, Dry/Semi-Dry, and Divergent and Artisanal. Samples aren't free here, you're looking at $1 per, but can you blame them with so many delicious options to choose from? Most of the ciders here are also very local, from OR or surrounding states, which I generally make a point to try when I am going out of town. If ciders aren't your thing, then they do also offer a beer and wine selection, as well as cider cocktails if you'd prefer something a bit extra (cider + alcohol).
THE VERDICT:
This was a really fun place to check out after a long hike that took us most of the day. Smallish, with a bustling and cheerful clientele, they have some seriously good ciders that tasted authentic and fresh. If the flight is any indication, they know how to do their ciders, and they do them well. Plus, with so many of them coming from the surrounding area, it doesn't get more local than that. I will hopefully be checking this place out again the next time I visit Portland.
