Rhode Island Restaurant Cielito Brings Great Mexican Food to Providence | Eater Boston

"Opened in August 2024 on a bustling downtown block, this second restaurant from the James Beard-nominated Alcantar family showcases plates from Michoacán under matriarch Maria Alcantar. The guacamole and ensalada de nopal, or cactus, transform typical apps into events; each comes with sizable fried tostada discs that can be broken up as you go and dipped into the verdant, chunky guac or the texturally dreamy salad of serranos, tomatoes, and queso panela. Meat was a faint memory after the enchiladas verdes, densely doughy pockets stuffed with queso chihuahua and cotija, carrots, potatoes, and onion, atop a bath of mole verde (a bright emulsion of tomatillos, chili peppers, and pumpkin seeds). The comfort dish for our table was the mole de olla, 12 ounces of braised short ribs swimming in guajillo pepper broth alongside chayote peppers, potatoes, corn, and green beans. The dining room is vibrant, with punchy teal walls and terracotta tile accents, and the bar and outdoor seating are just as fun; the night we went, a live jazz trio was playing next door. It’s best for a celebratory group dinner in the dining room or an intimate catch-up at the bar, where the cocktail list is fun and thoughtful—including an Oaxacan old fashioned that imparts smoke from El Tequileño reposado and Doba-Yej mezcal, and sweetness from a bar spoon of agave. There are no hot sauces or seasonings on the tables because every dish roars with flavor, but if you want to add a kick to your Mexican rice, ask for the house hot sauce—you’ll be wishing they’d bottle the stuff." - Jess Mayhugh

Food and beverage were excellent! Service was excellent too. However, we did spend almost 2 hours at the restaurant on a Monday evening. You can tell everything is fresh and made to order with quality ingredients, so it's worth waiting the extra time. Just know that if you're pressed for time, this may not be the best place to quickly get in and out.

Solid Mexican food (beautifully styled) in a nice space with solid service. Recommend you stick with the taco menu for better value. Maybe missing home (AZ) after a week in Providence, went to find some Mexican food. While different than our normal Sonoran fair in AZ, we thought this place looked awfully good. We started with guac and tostadas. Loces the crispy, fresh tostadas, and the guac was obviously fresh. It was a slightly under-seasoned. I had the Arrachera Campesino (essentially Carne Asada with the usual trimmings). My wife had the chuleta de puerco, and my daughter ordered off the much lower priced taco menu - birria and carnitas. Every plate noticeably well plated, neat, colorful, and artistic. My carne asada was a solid effort. It was mildly under-seasoned, and the tortillas, while pleasantly fresh, also lacked any seasoning and were under for my preference. My wife’s pork chop was nicely cooked, seasoned aggressively, and heavily smoked. The result was a nice tasting and tender pork chop, but flavor was very reminiscent of eating sausage (smoke + salt). Good, but again, left a little to be desired for the price. My daughter turned out to be wisest one. Her birria tacos were probably the best thing on the table. The carnitas were also done extremely well. Service was pleasant and competent throughout. Overall, it was solid, but the entrees didn’t quite blow us away, at a pretty high price point. Would definitely repeat, but would stick with the simpler (and more reasonably priced) taco menu.

Cielito has very friendly staff and nice decor, making for a pleasant atmosphere despite the small space. It’s cold by the door so keep that in mind. The cocktails were a highlight—both the margarita and Paloma were flavorful and well-balanced. We started with the shrimp empanada, which was tasty and cooked well, but the filling was sparse. For the price, we expected it to be more generous. For dinner, we tried the pork entrée and the prime rib, each priced at $35. While the food was good, it didn’t feel worth the high price. Way too expensive. The short rib, in particular, was very fatty, which was disappointing. Overall, it was an average experience. While the drinks were great, the food and prices didn’t live up to expectations.

Real food. Real Mexican food. I tried a few sauces, a little different than what I was used to, but not at all in a bad way. Still does the trick. Great tacos al pastor, definitely get the house sauce to get that sweet/spicy mix. Amazing tequila selection, Jaime knows what he's talking about. The mole is without chocolate, but still brings the warmth. The green mole is great and would cut pork perfectly.

Amazing food, amazing cocktails. Definitely not a taqueria, so don't expect those prices. The food and drink are clearly made with care and is not for folks who are seeking a generic food-chain kind of experience. I'm excited to return sometime soon.

Absolutely delish! This is the place if you want authentic Mexicsn cuisine and cocktails. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. I've tried several of their dishes and I've left disappointed or hungry.

This is a great little authentic restaurant. Had a weekday lunch here. There were people around but not overly busy. We walked right in and were seated immediately. Several outdoor seats available. The food options are good. The food is cooked right out where you can see it. Food came quickly and was excellent. The service was quick and friendly. Highly recommended.

Real honest review.. First of all let's talk about the drinks. I'm comparing this to a normal Mexican place. The drinks were a fraction of the size with a fraction of the alcohol in them for more money. I asked for a double shot in my next drink and it tasted normal after that. The menu has such a little selection it was ridiculous for a Mexican restaurant. I got a $34 slice of chicken smothered in Brown crap. It came with a mini cup of half rice and half Bean in this tiny little cup. If you're hungry do not come here. This restaurant has like 10 tables and it still took 1 hour of waiting to get crappy food... This is honestly the most disturbing Mexican place I have ever been.. Don't waste your time and money in aggravation, because when you're done drinking the little drink and eating that little plate and paying that huge bill you're going to be aggravated I guarantee you.
