Sometimes I feel that beer, especially in the now-suds-rich state of Florida, has become too big for its own good. To witness: the wild-eyed throngs that show up at Cigar City's original Spruce St. tasting room almost every day to pay tribute to Florida's prime mover in the beer geek world. It has become more of a tourist attraction than a tasting room, and to me it is a bit much. I usually pick up a bottle or two to go and head somewhere else. This last jaunt to Tampa, that "somewhere else" was Cigar City's cider and mead room, a place I'd been wanting to visit, but just hadn't found the time.
Simply put, this place is awesome. There are many interesting ciders and meads on tap, some bottles and cans for to-go purchase, and some available for growler fills. And - are you ready for this - on a lazy Saturday afternoon, while I wasn't the only person in there, it was pretty uncrowded. Room at the bar, attentive, chill bar staff, friendly patrons - PERFECT conditions for tasting a bunch of new ciders and meads!
I love that these guys push the envelope. They aren't just offering up 3 different varieties of plain cider and honey wine. On my recent visit, I was able to sample the following ciders: Cowboy Dan's Caramel Extravaganza, Watermelon, Ginger Kids, Rambunctious (awesome spicy cider with habanero, ghost pepper, goji berry and dragonfruit!), Strawberry Banana, and There's Always $ In the Banana Stand (chocolate-banana). For meads, I tried It Takes 2 To Mango, The Strange, Strange Bedfellows, In a Headlock, and the massive vanilla of The Vincente.
Of course I enjoyed some more than others, but most of these creations were very tasty, and a lot of fun to drink. It is truly the proverbial kid-in-a-candy-store experience, and a refreshing change from brewery tap lists boasting 4 different IPAs with 10 different hop varietals. It's a chill, comfortable spot in Ybor, and I hope it stays that way. I bet it will for at least a time, as cider and mead is still kind of a niche market for Florida.
Enjoy it before people start trading for this stuff, lining up at 4AM for special releases, and selling bottles for ridiculous prices on the secondary market.
