Cincinnati has been rated as one of the best literate cities in the U.S. - and this public library and its system is a strong reason why! It's been a treasure to the city and the region, and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to use this amazing library!
The Library's history dates back to the late 1800s, but the current main facility first opened in 1955, a great mid-century modern structure with a department store feel. It's since been expanded and renovated twice, with an awesome periodical reading room straddling 9th Street.
The circulation and material found in this Library are simply amazing. The first floor of the main building contains DVDs, CDs, and some books, aka the "Popular Library." It's great for those who work downtown and want to grab a few items and check them out quickly. The second floor has many computers, as well as new books available for check out, and stacks assorted by call number. The expansion wing has childrens, teens, microfilms/fiche, and administrative offices. Personally my favorite space is the 1982 atrium, which is reminiscent of the original Main Library from the 1870s, which stood where Macy's is now headquartered.
Probably the downside to the this place is, while it is open to everyone, that it is open to everyone, especially those who use the library as more as a place to meet and hang out than to research/browse/read. You'll see people using street voices and street language which draws some awkward stares from me - but some of that behavior is confined to select areas - there are areas that are a bit more remote and quieter. The restrooms tend to get worn and dirty, but somewhat more due to heavier usage and are generally kept clean. It's not a matter of where it's located, not a bad part of town, and right between the heart of downtown and OTR, but accessible to many different walks of life. Functionally, my one criticism is how the building is only 3 (public) stories but doesn't have escalators. The elevators work good, though.
I enjoy coming down here, from the suburbs, about once a month or so - using the Metro bus. Not having to deal with parking is nice in that aspect, which also gives me time to read something I checked out/need to return. Yes, I believe the Main Library is worth a trip in itself, though I do also enjoy coming when I've also been meeting friends, seeing events, going to a Reds game. Other times I go to the Forest Park branch, which is closest to me - not quite the downtown selection, but still worthwhile to me. If you haven't been to the Public Library in a while, you're missing a lot!
