This is my new favorite library. The staff is kind and thoughtful. I had to spend an afternoon here on a layover and I have had a 10/10 experience. The security guy is stellar and idk when I have said that before. 😂 Thank you, Cincinnati Public Library. This library has more resources than any library I have visited.

Google
I love the Makers Space! All of the staff was so helpful. I needed a poster for my classroom. I was nervous and didn't know where to start. Everyone was so helpful and when I left, I had completed other things on my back to school list I didn't even know I could do right in that space. Thank you for such a great resource!

Google
Love the library!! The resources here are unreal and extremely affordable! Look at their website to find them all and make a reservation. Every employee is so kind and helpful! I also love that they have instructions printed out for some things that makes it easy to figure out on your own as well. Please keep our libraries open we all NEED them!

I am new to the area and love a good library, so I stopped by to get a card and hopefully have a fun new study spot. I was browsing books and didn’t even realize I was in the teen section - a staff member came up to me and kindly asked me to go to an adult section to keep the kids “safe from harmful adults”. That was kind of odd, so this must be a pretty unsafe area. I finally found an area to sit down, and immediately two cockroaches were crawling on my computer and desk. I looked down to see cockroaches all over the carpet. I ended up leaving and going to Kenton County PL instead. Lesson learned, I should’ve stayed in my neighboorhood I guess. Super disappointing!

I absolutely love this place So much to choose from and the staff are very helpful. They have Audio books too. It is easy to get lost in the books, just ask them. You can also drop books in other locations if this location is far from you. They are currently doing a renovation, hopefully they include Starbucks in there. It was weird seeing some drug users walk in and out tho, but hey, they have to read too.

Margaux in Makers Space help me create buttons for 70th birthday. Miranda at the front desk helped me locate 2 books. They both were generous with their time!

Google
This is an Awesome Library. I had some issues getting my Card Registered because of my own disorganisation, but the Library Supervisor Lisa Meeks was so accommodating, patient, and I ended up getting access to my local library (which I should've done YEARS ago!) because of her help. I've heard this is one of the best Libraries in the US for Audiobook Access, from talking to friends I've found this to be ABSOLUTELY true. Thanks again Lisa, you really went above and beyond to help me! 🤗🐨🦘☮️

Google
I absolutely love this place!! There is always something to explore, something to do and whatever I need is almost always there. Even if they can't find it, it can be sent to the library of your choice in no time. The children's center has so much to offer for me children and they are both currently hooked on the touch and feel boardbooks. BTW the aquarium at the children's center is lovely. Would recommend to anyone and have many times.

Yelp
Such a big beautiful library with many options for kids and adults to enjoy. Spacious with many seats and study areas. So glad we stumbled across this gem!

Yelp
I found it, this is the actual library! To be clear, I love that Cincinnati has so many branch libraries, each has its own character and they're never overwhelming. BUT I have always found them to be too small. The main library is where the books are! There are two entire buildings that make up this library, one of which has plenty of space to work and the other has all the books. Books and books and books! There are plenty of spaces to sit. Street parking is the only downside but it's downtown so no surprise there.

Yelp
This library has finally finished an extensive renovation. The new building is quite impressive, notable for its open construction. It really feels big inside, and though I expect the architectural plan may predate the COVID era, these public spaces make everyone more comfortable the more open air there is. There is plenty of seating and several levels. Some museum-style exhibits showcase various aspects of local culture. There were ample water fountain and restroom facilities. It's still a very public space with all sorts of people wandering in and out, but it is more welcome than the interim facility that was open here for a while.

Gwena R.

Yelp
I saw that they had study pods, but my god were they absolutely disgusting. The seats as well as the table were absolutely nasty. For a big library, I expected more comfort for studying. It was nice till it wasn't. there are definitely better libraries to be at.

Yelp
The Library has been working throughout the pandemic, making every effort to stay safe and available. I am so very grateful that their Maker Space is back and running. The precautions are very reasonable, it is per appointment only (reservations are made on-line), with reduced time slots. There is a check-in desk where they verify your appointment. The stations are far apart and there is a lot of signage reminding to keep safe distance. Masks are compulsory at all times. The keyboards on shared spaces are covered with cellophane, and the chairs are now new and plastic, no cloth. All stations are sanitized by the Staff after each use. Some chairs were removed to allow for physical distancing. I feel very safe there. The Staff is amazing, always helpful and nice, despite the furloughs they suffered. Their book check outs are also working, the books are in quarantine for 4 days after drop, just to make sure the potentially contaminated paper is free if virus. They do an amazing job, serving us all with the highest safety standards. Thank you!

Yelp
Stopped in because we read about a Star Trek 50th anniversary "exhibit." Not exactly an exhibit, as I imagine the word...but a decent stop on our way to the City Flea. A couple of cutouts to take pictures with.... It is a big library branch. The bathrooms could be cleaner. And the wifi didn't work. ...meh...

Yelp
I can't speak highly enough about the Cincinnati and Hamilton County library system and the main branch is my favorite to visit. There are so many things that make this library phenomenal, so I think I'll write a list. 1. The drive through pick up window on 9th Street- This makes it so easy to stop by and pick up/return books on my way home from work. You can request the items online, and select to pick them up from the Main Library pick up window. 2. The MakerSpace- I have visited this area on many occasions and have created multiple projects, or I have just stopped in to see what projects are in progress. My current favorite aspect about the MakerSpace is the magnet/button maker. I recently stopped by and used the template to make magnets for my family using my own pictures. They loved them and it only cost me $1.50. Some of the stations completely book up, especially the laser cutter/engraver. Go online to the library's website and book a time in advance by clicking on the "MakerSpace" option on the sidebar. 3. The children's area- The children's librarians have always been more than helpful if I'm looking for something for my classroom or need suggestions. I love the variety of books they have available as well. The Children's Garden is a great place to go with kids, it's completely fenced in, and right off of the children's area. 4. The staff- Overall, the staff that I have interacted with have always been so friendly and helpful. It's reassuring knowing you have a friendly face to help you with any questions you have. 5. The wide variety of materials available- This applies to the entire library system, but they consistently have current books, movies, CDs, audio books, magazines, and digital materials available. I have enjoyed this library system since I was a child, and will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

Yelp
What a wonderful resource! I had no idea how great our library was downtown. First off, the staff is fantastic. They are well-informed, patient, and helpful. This is an extremely convenient place to apply for a passport because they can both submit the documents as well as take the pictures. Certain hours do require a reservation but walk ins are welcome in the earlier hours of the day. Great way to save time and be efficient. Very excited to dig further into the offerings of our local library!

Yelp
I think that the Main St Cincinnati Public Library location is one of the best libraries in Ohio. The selection is extensive and they're also able to get books from other Ohio public libraries and university libraries via OhioLink and SearchOhio. This particular location also has several additional spaces like the MakerSpace, 3D printers, etc. There are many desktop computers and you can check out a laptop as well. The drive through book pickup / dropoff is a nice touch as well.

Yelp
I am going to try not to gush all over this page. Your local library has more than books. It is a space where people reserve space for meetings, children's events, research and practice self improvement through activities like public speaking meetups.Apartment too small to host a baby shower? Reserve a library room! It has a huge geneology collection and part of it is accessible online. They have connection to community resources like tool rental through the program where you can also obtain a Kenton County library card. During the pandemic local branches serve as a pickup location for food for kids. They also provide curbside service where one can simply call and have books and movies brought to your car. All libraries are handicapped accessible and have resources available to assist ALL people. Of course they have an enormous collection of books and movies too. Before I would buy anything from a Barnes and Noble or Amazon, I would check out the library first. They may have it! I use the app and find it super easy to navigate. The audio book collection saves a ton of money over services like Audible. There is no way I could list all the services they provide but these are a few of my favorite things.

Yelp
One of the best libraries and library systems in the USA! There's an incredible selection of materials on hand. There are 2 entire floors stuffed with books, journals, etc. that are not even open to the public! On the rare chance they don't have what you're looking for, the library can obtain most anything through SearchOhio and OhioLink which access public and academic libraries across the entire state! There are some nice reading areas and lots of big windows bringing in light and providing views of the surrounding city. The genealogy and local history department is one of my favorites to visit. There is an amazing number of records available. Plus, in the library you have free access to the library version of Ancestry.com! There's street (metered) parking and also a parking garage just north of the library on 9th street. Well worth a visit.

Yelp
NOTE: It has been a while since anyone Yelped this place so there are some updates in this review..... First, let me reply to one Yelper's comment on this main branch not "located in the best part of downtown," I lived less than 2 blocks away along with many friends....and we take personal offense to such comments. The downtown residence committee has spent years making this downtown a great place to live/work/play. Perhaps he was commenting to folks that pass through this area, but from a crime perspective most of that occurs north and west of Central Parkway thank you. Now..........where was I? Oh yeah, the library....it is comprehensive in many ways, though the architecture is a bit underwhelming. This multi-level complex spans several blocks and houses a comprehensive list of both print and media. Like many libraries around the country, they host an annual "spring cleaning" event that involves selling print and electronic media that is being rotated/replaced/etc from their system/shelves/etc. I've found many a great book or music CD or DVD at this event at costs that have me leave with no less than 10 to 20 items at a time for usually less than $25!!!! In this economy that should be a plus in anyone's book. Also, and I visit this location exclusively every time I'm in the "Nasty Nati" for the free wireless access - it use to cost, but no more. Since I only own a rental property here, I have no place to conduct business and this is a central location to work on the property and stay connected. The help desk folks are friendly and quick to answer a question. Also, if you are roaming around downtown and need to use the bathroom, you can do it here on the main floor without any questions...and that can be a challenge in some cities. Weird way to end a review I know................

Yelp
So lucky to have all the branches of the library available. Great staff always helpful at Symmes. My teen daughter has had he opportunity to volunteer the last three summers. Main library has makers space and genealogy. Love Hoopla and Kanopy that are available online.

Yelp
If you didn't already know, Cincinnati has one of the best library systems in the U.S. if not world. The amount of material in print, media, and digital rivals that of many huge cities and if you've traveled or lived in other cities, you probably agree. There are tons of programs and special events all year so keep checking their events page or just talk to your local librarians. One of the best events I've been to was a lecture and Q & A with Rick Steves. That guy was awesome. Full disclosure, I worked here for a year and at a few branches. Great employers and some great co-workers. Getting into the system can be quite difficult, I highly recommend befriending an employee to help your prospects. But even then you might have to start part time and doing something like shelving. PSA for Parents: Do not let your kids roam out of sight from you! Seriously. Here or at a branch. This is a public(!) place and I've seen and experienced some pretty bad things at libraries. All that aside, support your local library (40+ branches I believe) and this one. If I had to pay for all the books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines I've borrowed (FOR FREE) I'd be deeply in debt and on an episode of Hoarders. Oh, and if you're worried about your fines from that book you borrowed in grade school, not to fear, if the fine is over 5 years, it can be waived and you can start with a clean slate. Just be really really nice and remember to return them in the future. Oh, while I am on the topic. If you have a mac or iPhone/iPad, there is a great app called Library Books that can alert you of not only due dates but also any holds that are ready for pickup. It's 2.99 and is worth it.

Yelp
I went there today for the purpose of seeing two lovely statues in the children's garden (there's also a nice garden outside the adult section and both gardens have seating). I discovered the library's gift shop and it has a very good selection, plus the two women working there were very friendly. Along those lines, all of the staff members I spoke to (two guards plus a few others, as it was difficult to find the children's garden) were *very* friendly and helpful. The library is also very attractive.

Yelp
This place serves as the functional "Drop in Center" during the daylight hours. I wound not sit in any of the lounges or upstairs reading areas. However, they do have a great selection of hard to find videos; especially classic and foreign films - and they're cheaper than NetFlix.....because they're free.

Yelp
I just discovered today that in the library, you can go and check out the daguerreotype view of Cincinnati in 1848. Just go up to the third floor with the elevators and walk into the museum like corridor. You'll find a room with the big picture that Charles Fontayne and William S. Porter took on September 24, 1848. They essentially set up their camera on a rooftop in Newport and took up a picture in 8 plates. It is amazing to see how sharp the images are. I would dare to say that they are sharper than with our current cameras. Next to the original daguerreotype, there is a big touch screen which allows you to zoom into specific sections and learn more about different aspect of history (every day life, or culture, or economics). Every Cincinnati should come up here and check it out - it's such an amazing piece of history that I'm surprised that it isn't marketed more widely. Go and check it out!

Yelp
It had been a while since I looked around the downtown library. For most services I go to my wonderful local library in Northside. I thought I remembered reading about a fotofocus event here. Upon entering a friendly smartly dressed associate was there to greet me. I asked about the fotofocus location. I was directed to the elevator or the nearby steps that go past the Library Friends' Shop. Before heading there I looked at the collectables exhibit in the main lobby. It never fails to disappoint. I opted to take the steps and to check out the shop. The clearance by the entrance immediately got my attention. Once inside I saw a nice variety of non book library themed gift merchandise and greeting cards as well as a big section filled with books for children of all ages. I was looking for some Christmas gifts for my grandson and niece and nephew but nothing seemed right. I then headed up toward the connecter. The fotofocus exhibit here is the Michael Wilson They Knew Not My Name, and I Knew Not Their Faces that runs until December 31st. There were striking black and white photos of ordinary families and individuals. I exited by walking over and going down the steps to the Children's department. This reminded me that they were talking about closing down this building and I'm not sure what the plans are at this time. We have a wonderful downtown library in Cincinnati with a great selection of books, movies, music cd's, newspapers, reference books and magazines. There is something for everyone here and the price is right because it is free to check practically everything out with a library card! Until next time be kind to each other. #yelpcincy #thepubliclibraryofcincinnati

Yelp
The downtown branch of the Hamilton and Cincinnati public library is truly astounding. It's so big that it spans two city blocks and has a skywalk between the two! I don't want to be repetitive but the records collection here of your ancestors, first hand sources, and other various historical resources is really astounding. They have a decent movie and music selection, but I'd personally rather get things on netflix or online. That saves on the gas prices. The library itself is very spacious and has many activities to offer from book signings, lectures, and events from children. They have a cool theatre space upstairs in the children's department where the children's performances are. Always a good stop on your adventures downtown, whether its to look for a book or to just pass some time.

Yelp
Frustration - this is my experience thus far with the Cincinnati Public Library. I moved here from Chicago over two years ago, where I frequently borrowed books to satisfy my insatiable need to read. I could almost always immediately find new and popular books to read. Even if I had to place a hold, I would generally be able to get a book within a month to six weeks at most - but usually sooner. The Cincinnati library simply does not have enough copies of any current bestselling book (sometimes not enough for older books either). My most recent experience is that I placed holds on November 16 for 3 different books. Currently my place in line for the 3 books is 55, 224, and 31. For the last two years, by the time my hold becomes available I've either already purchased the book because I'm tired of waiting, or I've simply lost interest because it has taken so long and I'm frustrated. Also, the tiny libraries near where I live have almost no selection. I lived near very small libraries before and was always amazed at how easily I could find books and help from the knowledgeable librarians who would successfully do their best to get what patrons needed. Here, there seems to be little they can do to help. I do NOT blame the librarians. There are simply not enough books to go around. In addition, anytime my child needs books for a paper at school we often have to BUY the books rather than borrow from the library because there are no books to be had. If the purpose of a library is to put books in patrons' hands, Kindles, etc., then the library should be able to determine how many copies are needed to meet the demand. This is a fixable problem!

Yelp
Nothing special, I've definitely been to nicer libraries. It was very busy, most of the tables had someone at them. There were a lot of people using the tables to sleep, and no one seemed to care. A little kid came up and asked me for a dollar, then came back later and acted like he was mentally challenged. The book fountain is really cute but that's about the nicest part. There were several people inside talking loudly and arguing, again no one cared.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
This library is huge!! I always came here as a kid and I could always spend hours looking through the books and looking at the magazines ( they have a huge collection) nothing has changed of course and whenever I go there it definitely brings back memories. They do have a extensive collection of CDs, DVDs so if you are movie mood grab up that library card and go... Or check out those cds if you still have a CD player. Check out the library you will be glad you did!
google avatar

Carrie P.

Yelp
If you didn't know - the Main library has a drive-thru to pick up your reserved items - it makes the library convenient if you're not in the mood to park. Just make sure you choose "Main Library - Drive Up Window" when you place your holds. Today I even walked through the. Um. Drive-thru. I was downtown, realized I had a hold available, and wanted to just get it while I was there. They didn't look at me too funny. I guess I'm not the first person who has ever done this. If you forget your library card (or were not intending to walk through the drive-thru) you can give them your driver's license to look you up. Free books. Free movies. I don't care how many iThings are developed, right now I like a good (free) book in my hands.
google avatar

Nate S.

Yelp
This is a pretty great library - it's very large & has a nice selection. As you know (or actually - you most likely don't know), I frequent libraries to check out their DVD selection. The library has organized it so that the 'popular' items are right there inside the South block of the library - this includes books, movies (both DVD & VHS for any archaic type people out there), and CDs (do people use those anymore?). I'm not the biggest fan of how they've organized the DVDs. They have separated the movies for TV on DVD, but they have created separate shelves for each genre (i.e. horror, comedy, drama, etc.), and it's not always easy to figure out if 'Taken' is an Action, Adventure or Thriller movie or where the line is drawn between comedy, drama, and romantic. That's really my only beef with this location. I will say that the collection is extensive, if you can navigate through it, and they have a 'Recenlty Released' section that typically has a good amount of DVDs. Their TV on DVD selection is also really large!! (That's what she said??) Lastly, I will say that their staff is friendly and helpful! They once didn't have a book on the shelves even though it was supposedly there. One of the librarians said that it was recenly moved, and got a courrier to go up to the third floor or wherever to get it and bring it right to me - that was awesome!!!

Yelp
The Main Branch of the Hamilton County Public Library of Cincinnati far exceeded my expectations. It is so large that it is encased in not one but two buildings. Yes, two buildings! There is a walkway on the second floor that connect the two buildings. In a building of this size, there are so many titles. On the off chance that you are unable to find what you are looking for, if it is in the Hamilton County Library system, it can be transferred to the branch within a couple of days. Transfers of media are free of charge. There are plenty of places to read or study. As well as computer to use. About half of the seating was occupied the day we went. The inside seems to be well maintained. There is a Friends of the Library gift shop located in this location. Both new and used item are sold there. Not only books, but other gift shop type items. The two women who were working in the shop were nice to not only my husband and myself, but our children as well. My only complaint is the lack of parking. I'm not sure if we missed a designated lot, but we ended up in a metered spot. All of the other branches I have been to have free parking. Spending a day at the library could quickly add up. I wasn't going to take away a star, but the more I thought about it, the more it occurred to me, having to hunt for and pay for parking will probably keep me from coming back unless I want to show it to someone who is visiting.

Yelp
I sopped here on a day trip to check out the Star Trek exhibit that I had heard about. The exhibit itself was a little underwhelming. The library itself is huge, so if you can't find something inside it walls that you need, the friendly staff should be able to help you. I saw plenty of reading areas (I mean it is a library, after all), and plenty of computer access. Looks alike a great place for the community.

Yelp
A true asset to the community. I am so glad that this library is so actively used and appreciated. This is also a meeting place for community organizations and volunteers. My first memory of this place was when my mom was getting english lessons from a lady that volunteered with the YWCA to teach foreigners English. For a bored kid of 10 years old, this was a place of magic and it has yet to lose any of that wonder. Thankfully they now offer internet access and other activities for people of all ages.

Yelp
I have been very impressed with the library system in Cincinnati. I love how there are so many branches (even if some are very small) so there is a local library for SO many Cincinnati communities. Also, if you haven't checked it out already, there is a great e-library system-- you can borrow things for your kindle from the comfort of your living room. Also the library lets you renew things over and over....and over again. I've been a fan of public libraries since I was a little girl, and it's nice to see Cincinnati with the great system.

Yelp
Main Library, I loved a lot of things about you. I loved your popular library, I loved your layout. I love your nod to old things and new things, both in your building and in your holdings. Your staff was pretty helpful, although there was a staff member who snarked, "lost?" when we stopped to ask for the tucked away Cincinnati Room. Snark not, staff member. It was my idea to ask you instead of wondering around looking for signs (literally). But your WiFi! It was killing me! I love that you have it and the stellar price (free, like everything else in our awesome libraries!) especially through a three-floor mega-building like yourself, but it would run realllly slow and then would cut out altogether and then act like nothing happened. Call me when you fix/upgrade your WiFi. It was hard to get anything submitted via my laptop due to the spotty signal. Maybe it was because we were on the third floor... This place would be a cute date (and was for nerds like me and my boyfriend) and looks just chalk full of history (the building and all the genealogy/local history gems hidden inside)!

Bea D.

Yelp
I had no expectations for the main branch. I had only visited the local branches. The main library is expansive. Fortunately, there was a helpful staff person only a few feet away. They helped me navigate the computer system, the shelves, and self check-out. My only disappointment was that 90% of the books in which I was interested I could not check out. They were "reference" books. They were technical books that I could not absorb without coming back to the library daily for weeks on end. I found that very disappointing. These books looked as if they had never been opened or read. Maybe if you could check them out, they would get some use. I felt sorry that money was spent to purchase these books that would never be used for learning. But that has been my only complaint. It really is a great library.

Yelp
Note: This review applies primarily only to the Main location, and to a lesser degree, the Walnut Hills branch. I work a couple blocks from the Main location, so it is obviously very convenient to stop there at lunch or after work. The library is HUGE. I hadn't explored it in its entirety until a couple a weeks ago and it is much larger than I expected. Normally, I just place a request for a book and come to pick it up when it arrives. This allows me to get books from anywhere in the Public library system. The system has pretty much everything available that you could want. I'm currently tackling Modern Library's Top 100 novels of the 20th century and they've had everything I've tried to get so far. They also have a very good selection of DVDs and CDs. The actual facility itself is pretty decent. Some of it could use a renovation, but it probably won't be coming anytime soon due to the current economic climate. My favorite little "secrets" at the Main library (not really secrets, but neat things that I enjoy): - The Friends of the Library used bookstore. You can find some real bargains here is you're willing to browse through what they have for sale. - The small eatery they have up by the store. Very cheap, pretty good food. - The outdoor garden/courtyard. Very relaxing, especially if you have it to yourself. Overall, I've been very impressed with the library so far. The only complaints are minor ones, and they are primarily with the library system itself (C'mon! Let me see what placeI am in line when I have a hold on a book!). I've checked out more books and read more since I've lived here than before I moved, so I suppose that's a great sign. I look forward to it being a great resource in my quest to tackle these 100 novels.

Yelp
The main branch of the library is immense. The selection there is without comparison in the greater Cincinnati area, which makes sense because it probably wouldn't be the Main Branch if it was! There are mounds and mounds of books and reference materials you can find in the main branch. The rare books section IS really special. The aisles in the main part aren't too close together and the hours you can lose there are well worth it. The music section is huge and is great to look through for anything you might want to hear but don't want to purchase. The video section is also huge. Parking is sometimes an issue but again, it's worth it to visit the main branch of Cincinnati's public library.

Yelp
I've been coming to this library since I was a little girl. It has changed and improved often and has become a place for people to learn and feel safe. It has a phenomenal children's library and library staff who are as kind as they are qualified. I especially love Mr. Bob and all of my preschoolers did too :) The main branch is also a great place to come for printing needs and for passport services. I continually have great experiences here and create wonderful memories!

Yelp
The Cincinnati Public Library System is constantly exceeding my expectations. It's extremely user friendly (they have an app!), has an amazing selection of books and movies (cancel your Netflix subscription because you just need a library card), and everything is absolutely FREE! The best part about the Main library downtown is the Makerspace on the 3rd floor. If you've never been there, you need to check it out ASAP. If you have a small business, event you're planning (hello future brides!), or charity you're working with, you can make so many COOL things here for cheap cheap cheap. They only charge you for materials! They have a 3D Printer, a button maker, large format vinyl sign printing (perfect for welcome banners or direction signs), laser cutter/engraver (yes, if you want to make those cute wooden signs for your wedding you're seeing all over Pinterest, you can make them here!), sewing machines, a photo studio, and a whole lot more. Plus there are library employees there full-time to help you with your projects and they'll even provide materials for you! You need to bring in your own fabric for the sewing machines and stuff to engrave, but the vinyl signs, buttons, etc they will sell to you at cost. You can reserve specific stations online. I made 50 custom buttons for $5. This would be a great fun and educational activity for kids on a rainy day (imagine having your kid use a 3D printer to make their own Pikachu figurine...they would love it!). Go check it out!

Yelp
So then, I reviewed a library. The Hamilton County main library is an awesome place. I have the luxury of being about two block from it when I work so I can go here on my lunch break. It's quiet, as a library should be. Furthermore, the people who work here are very passionate about the books they read. They have an entire selection of books the employees have read and recommend. The one drawback to this library is the people outside. They're rude, they bug you for change, they smoke and cause you a problem. I actually don't go here as often as I want to because of the people lingering outside this place.

Yelp
If I had the ability to stop time, I would come here and immerse myself in learning from all the millions of books. The Main Library is a reader's paradise: a three-story building extending along two city blocks, complete with a skywalk. The sections of books here are endless. The library is divided into a few general sections: - popular books - information and reference materials - genealogy and local history books - CDs / DVDs - newspapers / magazines - children's literature Every section is massive, with aisles upon aisles of books on every topic from history to sociology to astrology. My favorite area is the Cincinnati Room; special section that houses original copies of local history books from as early as the 1700s. These books cannot be checked out, much less leave the room (they make you put your bags in a locker). With several private desks and a beautiful window overlooking the city, reading in the Cincinnati Room is a perfect way to spend a weekend afternoon. I also like how the children's department is in the second building. It's separate from the popular adult books and historical materials, keeping any noisy kids away from folks doing reading and research. The library also has an extensive CD and DVD collection. Overdue charges on media are pretty pricey, so only check these out if you're diligent on returning things on time. There are also several meeting rooms located on the third floor. The Tower Room is used for many adult programs, such as author discussions to Cincinnati Museum Center presentations. These are very interesting, well-attended, and free to the public. The only downside to the library is the parking situation. Being located Downtown, the closet parking is with meters on the street, lining the perimeter of both buildings. The meters cost $2.00 per hour. I wish the city would donate a parking lot to the library so that more people could access it. I could easily spend hours reading here, but usually only stay long enough to quickly find and check out my books. The Main Library is a gem for Downtown Cincinnati and am glad to see this institution has withstood the test of time.

Yelp
After lunch at Jr Table I headed over here with some time to kill and a library is the best place to do so. I won't go into details because a lot of other Yelpers have and they do a great job in doing so. The book selection is wow, I picked a book from the stack and found a chair and just started to read and it was great. The movie selection here is rival to none. This is one of Cincinnati's Gems.

Yelp
I'm not a frequent visitor as I normally go to Half Price to buy my books but when I go they always have the item I want and everyone is helpful. The library book sale is on my calendar every year and it is a great event.

Yelp
There is so much going on at the Main Library that I'm going to tell you everything I know, and it's only going to be a portion of what they offer. Yes, Yes, they have books; but they also have: current and classic movies, audiobooks, live recordings of comedy acts, rare albums, micropheesh (I know I spelled that wrong, so kudos to you if you know what I'm talking about), art collections, a way to register to vote, a quiet study area, live concerts, book signings, clean bathrooms, gardens, a gift shop, a used-book store, and... AMAZING librarians. Keep an eye on the hours: Sunday: 1-5 Monday- Wednesday: 9-9 Thursday - Saturday: 9-6 Also keep an eye on the events the library has going on. We went to a book signing the other night and the place was packed! They also have a "Laugh and Lunch" session every Friday that I've been tempted to attend, but never been brave enough. The only problem is that I only find out about these things by actually going to the library and seeing the flyer. Note to self: With all the awesome stuff you can rent for FREE from the library, you're going to want to bring a bag. If you forget, they will kindly sell you one for a dollar.

Yelp
What an amazing library! Lots of books, constantly updated collection, free small concerts, book signings and other events, many activities for children. Huge collection of records and films. And all that for FREE! Woow!

Yelp
Cincinnati has been rated as one of the best literate cities in the U.S. - and this public library and its system is a strong reason why! It's been a treasure to the city and the region, and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to use this amazing library! The Library's history dates back to the late 1800s, but the current main facility first opened in 1955, a great mid-century modern structure with a department store feel. It's since been expanded and renovated twice, with an awesome periodical reading room straddling 9th Street. The circulation and material found in this Library are simply amazing. The first floor of the main building contains DVDs, CDs, and some books, aka the "Popular Library." It's great for those who work downtown and want to grab a few items and check them out quickly. The second floor has many computers, as well as new books available for check out, and stacks assorted by call number. The expansion wing has childrens, teens, microfilms/fiche, and administrative offices. Personally my favorite space is the 1982 atrium, which is reminiscent of the original Main Library from the 1870s, which stood where Macy's is now headquartered. Probably the downside to the this place is, while it is open to everyone, that it is open to everyone, especially those who use the library as more as a place to meet and hang out than to research/browse/read. You'll see people using street voices and street language which draws some awkward stares from me - but some of that behavior is confined to select areas - there are areas that are a bit more remote and quieter. The restrooms tend to get worn and dirty, but somewhat more due to heavier usage and are generally kept clean. It's not a matter of where it's located, not a bad part of town, and right between the heart of downtown and OTR, but accessible to many different walks of life. Functionally, my one criticism is how the building is only 3 (public) stories but doesn't have escalators. The elevators work good, though. I enjoy coming down here, from the suburbs, about once a month or so - using the Metro bus. Not having to deal with parking is nice in that aspect, which also gives me time to read something I checked out/need to return. Yes, I believe the Main Library is worth a trip in itself, though I do also enjoy coming when I've also been meeting friends, seeing events, going to a Reds game. Other times I go to the Forest Park branch, which is closest to me - not quite the downtown selection, but still worthwhile to me. If you haven't been to the Public Library in a while, you're missing a lot!

Yelp
I've written reviews of Cincinnati Public Library branches, which all together is a great library system. The Main Library downtown is more than just the "hub" of the county-wide library branch system, however, as it is a really amazing library which I have read to be one of the best in the country. Cincinnati's first public library in 1853 was one of the first in the country and its current location has been the home to endless books and more since 1874. The Main Library is extremely nice inside, although it isn't located in the best part of downtown. The library offers just so much and while its branches have different sections, the downtown library has entire departments. Some of those departments include the very popular and already discussed Genealogy and Local History, the Children's Learning Center, Magazines and Newspapers, Library for the Blind, TeenSpot, and TechCenter. I first walked into this library as a kid in elementary school, but at the time I wasn't able to appreciate the library like I can now. It is really a special place, and it's no wonder that roughly 25,000 people are "served" there each week. Whether you want to trace your family history or Cincinnati Reds History in Genealogy and Local History, get (primary and secondary school) assistance at Homework Central, find "Talking Books" in the Library for the Blind, or just cozy up in a spot to a read a book, the Main Library downtown is the place for you. It's truly a great library and a special place to have in Cincinnati, and not surprisingly it is an Ohio Historical Society "Historical Marker."

Yelp
Consistently ranked as one of the best libraries in the entire country, The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County earned its honored distinction because of its high circulation rates, excellent staffing, quality materials, reference service, and other factors. The main library downtown is an amazing resource we have in this city. Many people to do not realize all the programs and exhibits they have there. There are some beautifull out doors spaces where you can sit and read or grab a bit to eat. There are a wide selection of movies and cds you can borrow. They are now starting a wide variety of online services including downloading of books.

Yelp
Everything a modern day library should be and more! We loved stopping! Kids made buttons in the maker space, altered book exhibit, hands on stations, it is amazing. 3D printers, poster makers, engraving machines...Libraries should be modern day warehouses for information and learning. This place makes me want to live in Cincinnati! I didn't even see the fiction section...

Yelp
Free wi-fi. Spacious. Large selection. Knowledgeable staff. Even a cafe. What more can you ask for? Oh, and check out the daguerreotype before you leave to learn a bit about Cincinnati's history.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed the library? That is insane, and will be remedied right now. We are such fans of the downtown library! It's the only library branch that I've been to in Cincinnati, so I can't compare them. But we got a library card within a week or so of moving here, and have been using it ever since. What is great about the library? 1) DVD Movie rental--Way cheaper than Blockbuster or Redbox...because it's FREE! And they have TV series, and movies, and what isn't available there can be found on their website and moved from another branch. Which leads me to: 2) Their website--it's has a little way to go in user experience, but you can reserve things online and then get a text when they've made their way to your location. We do this with books and DVDs and CDs 3) BOOKS, of course! Tons of books (and see #2) 4) CD's...they really have a ton of music! It's great to listen to new bands before buying! 5) HISTORY--when we bought our house downtown, I went to the library to do some research on it. The helpful librarian tracked down maps from the 1800's, and city directories, and was a wealthy of information. They also have internet access, and computers to use, and often great displays. What a great perk! NOTE: however, I agree with Alex--I, too, have checked out DVD's without knowing you had to take the clear covers off. And the folks at the desk never said anything. Of course, I know now--but someone needs to remind them that there are first-timers running around!

Yelp
Very cool Maker space area and Edward did an amazing job helping a tour group instantaneously understand all the options of things to do. One can make picture buttons (lapel) there and lot of great resources. Right on the bus line too for good access. High speed printer to paper print out your own books too! Or diary. :)

Yelp
I love the Main Library. It's huge, there nice areas to sit outside (check out the Walnut Street Garden) neat displays, and there's a fantastic drive thru window so you can place a hold on your books ahead of time and then pick them up. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I've discovered that the 3rd floor is much quieter if you are looking for a place to study (and on a weekday you will find the median age up there is pretty high). I love that there is a huge panel of skylights in the center of the building that runs through all three floors so you can get lots of natural light. I do wish the desk chairs were a little more comfortable- I'm pretty sure they have been around for quite some time- but this is our own fault for not making it a priority to support our public libraries! So support the CPL, Cincinnati! It's a treasure.

Yelp
I love love love to read, and tear through books quickly so I need a place that I can get more books easily and fits in my budget. Thats where the Main Library fits in. The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County is one of the best library systems in the nation, it is an awesome resource to have right here in our city. And thats cool, they have a lot to offer. Sure, they have lots of DVD's, helpful librarians and a tasty in house bistro. Also they have beautiful gardens, a fun kids space and lots of little nooks to tuck in with a book. But who cares about all of that because they have a drive thru. A DRIVE THRU. This is literally the best thing ever, When I found out about the library drive thru, I was all "What? You mean I can get books without leaving my car? YESSSS!". What? I am lazy, and the library caters to my laziness. All I have to do is go on the website and put the books I want on hold for pick up at the Drive Thru window and wait for the email telling me that they are ready. It's like going to McDonalds, except instead of high fat food you are getting knowledge (or DVD'S, or CD's or whatever else you decide to check out). Its a lazy book lovers dream. I guess if they did delivery that would be even more awesome, but the drive thru is pretty great.
