South Bend’s Best Restaurants for a Great Meal | Eater Chicago

"The downtown restaurant serves customers in a quaint modern dining area next to a full bar. Visitors can find various Mexican dishes, but the restaurant also showcases other international options, including popular American and Asian items, pork or chicken tamales, pad Thai, and a juicy cheeseburger." - Drew Mentock

I always hear a new good song when I am inside waiting for my food 😌🎶🎵 Cinco's food is always fresh and good and the customer service is always awesome - you are always greeted with a smile and staff is very attentive to your needs. It's great to see this restaurant thrive in the heart of downtown South Bend ❤️

Google
I was underwhelmed by the chicken fajitas here. I was expecting savory fajitas and what I got was fajitas in a sweet sauce. The guacamole needed more salt and lime juice. The skinny margarita was pretty good. I didn’t try any of the Asian options.

Google
Great outdoor patio area in the summer. Best fresh margarita and chips & salsa in South Bend. Staff are super friendly and the diversity of the fusion style menu makes it a great place to go when you are going with a group. Highly recommend!

Google
Visited with my wife and our first experience at Cinco was excellent! From reservation, to service, to the food it was all top notch. We were very excited to try it as Mexican and Thai food are our favorites and this place did not disappoint. We got the chips and salsa to start with. The chips were excellent! My wife got the Siam Noodles and loved it. I got the tamales that are topped with steak, onions and cilantro. Highly recommend Cinco! We will be back again soon!

Google
Surprising dining experience in South Bend. The food and drinks were amazing. The fried spinach appetizer was a let down, like eating greasy air so to speak. Shrimp egg rolls are a must try here with whole large shrimp inside. The pad see ew was delicious but a bit dry for our liking. The chips were fresh and flaky and not too salty. Pad thai is THE BEST in the area Overall, 4/5, we will be back!

Google
Visited with a friend who works up in the area. Staff was incredible and the food was AMAZING! We had the pad Thai, fajitas, burger, quesadillas, egg rolls and dumpling. Great food and great atmosphere!

Google
I love this place. They have a very interesting menu including Mexican and Thai food. I have had Thelma as my server several times now and she is very kind and attentive. Their drinks are delicious and I’m not big into alcohol. I keep getting their spicy cucumber margarita because it’s so dang tasty. Today I got these tacos and I haven’t seen many places do a good veggie taco but these folks know exactly what their doing. This might sound weird but sometimes restaurants don’t serve food as though people as supposed to eat it. As soon as my food came out I knew it was prepared with care and maybe even a little love. This is definitely becoming one of my regular places to eat. Thanks so much!

Google
The atmosphere was peaceful fun. We were seated immediately when we arrived. A waitress came to our table immediately with menus and water. Appetizer came shortly after. The crispy spinach chips are a must try and the spring rolls. Our dinner was great. Overall it was a good night out.

Yelp
We have heard nothing but good things about Cinco 5 so we decided to try it out. The service was excellent. We asked many questions and our server was gracious and helpful with her answers. The ambiance has something to be desired. There are two main dining areas. One is cozy with all booth seating. The other, where we sat, is more wide open with a few tables and no booths. IMO it's quite an odd set up. They could benefit from an interior designer. Not really a big deal to me though. The food...ah, the food! Chef's kiss to you Cinco 5! Amazing! We started with the pork dumplings. So good with the spicy dipping sauce. I had the pad thai with a heat level of 2 as suggested by our server. The portion was generous but still a tad spicy for me. Next time I'll try spicy #1. The hubs had the chicken and steak fajitas. They didn't come out sizzling like our neighboring table's did but he wasn't mad. The man is a fajita connoisseur, these take the top spot! Both meats were tender, juicy and seasoned perfectly. Two big !! What a great meal! We can't wait to return to Cinco 5. You will love it too!

Yelp
Good time catching up with colleagues in South Bend. Laid back casual family friendly dining. The margarita tower requires a table of 4 or more. Mexican and Asian fusion at its best.

Yelp
The service was absolutely phenomenal. Our waiter was so nice and attentive. The food was pretty delicious! I got the chicken burrito and it was a little too salty for my taste. My other group members loved their dishes! Drinks were good too, cute atmosphere. I liked that they had both Thai and Mexican food.

Yelp
We had dinner there on Saturday night, and I wasn't sure what to expect because the menu is split between Thai and Mexican, but isn't fusion. We decided to try Thai and it was good overall, but I was kind of upset at the unannounced upcharge from chicken (which is standard in each dish) to beef...which ended up being a $7 upcharge per dish. Im ok with an upcharge, but $14 extra is a little over the top. We were able to explain to the waitress that unless she explains this big upcharge to people; her tips will surely be affected, no matter how good her service was. The restaurant theme is weird, too, because there really isn't a theme. I don't know whether to be happy because the food was good or upset because the overall price was extreme compared to what the menu said. My Pad Thai was $21 with beef, which was way too much, in my opinion, when there is an even better Pad Thai option up the street for $12.95.

Yelp
Interesting Thai-Mexican fusion menu from Cinco 5. Everything from Red Curry to Quesadillas. Tried the steak arracherra fajitas for lunch. Full disclosure, I am a HUGE fan of arracherra from my time working in Mexico so my expectations were very high going in. Final verdict: it wasn't arracherra, at least not what I know as arracherra. But it was good. Very good. My colleagues tried the red curry and a shrimp quesadilla and both were very satisfied with their meals. Service was good and ambiance was OK. All in all a perfect lunch after a long morning of travel. Would certainly come here again.

Yelp
While I ALWAYS love the food, I want to heavily praise the staff, especially our server Alicia. She was warm, friendly, and most of all fun. She put up with our rowdy gentleman, and joined in on the fun. Looking forward to visiting her again soon. I recommend the Pad Thai!

Yelp
Great service! Food fabulous! The variety is cool. Highly recommend. Ambiance excellent!

Yelp
This place is what a fusion restaurant should be. Thai-Mexican hits the spot every time. I love the deep fried tamales with a side of fried spinach, and the red curry is really great too.
google avatar

Neiman W.

Yelp
Hearing about the restaurant, I kind of had to make sure reviews fusions aren't always the best, but this one was absolutely amazing. The food was perfect. I ordered Thai food and Mexican food. The next time I went both times it was great. The tower of margaritas were extremely tasty, and definitely serve the purpose. Our waitress was extremely kind and sweet. I knew everyone in my family, which made it even more fun. The ambience was chic and very modern will definitely enjoy going back and actually I think I will go there tonight for dinner.
google avatar

Kryston H.

Yelp
Interesting combo of Thai and Mexican choices. Something g for everyone though perhaps on the pricey side The restaurant itself feels unfinished and disjointed. Wait staff has always been very good
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
One of my go to spots in south bend!! I mean where else can you get amazing pad thai paired with a mean margarita??
google avatar

Jon O.

Yelp
Enjoyed this fusion of Thai and Mexican food. Corn masa used for the tamales and the soles were very good, as well as they fresh chips. In particular, I liked the fried tamal, great flavor and texture.
google avatar

Addison H.

Yelp
Good food and service, we used to come here in past and stop when we had a bad experience. Tried it again after 2 years and had a great meal.

Yelp
I was a little hesitant coming to a restaurant that boasts skillful culinary in both Thai and Mexican cuisine because usually most restaurants are good at 1! However, I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious our Mexican and Thai dishes came out!! I ordered the Pad Pak and my bf ordered Mexican Quesadilla and both came out so yummy! I wish that my Pad Pak was spicy! Warning: the service here is so slow! It took us almost 20 minutes to get our drinks in and another 15 minutes to get the food ordered. The restaurant wasn't super busy, I think they were just slower than your typical restaurant. Other than that, the staff here is so nice and the food is delicious.

Madison G.

Yelp
Girls night with marg pitchers and only ordered from the thai section. Staff was AMAZING. So kind/fun and the food is super inexpensive.
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
They normally have great tacos and the rest of other stuff on menu isn't bad. Have great service and use to have Taco Tuesdays

George G.

Yelp
This is a great place to go when you or members of your party aren't sure what they're in the mood for. Their mix of Mexican, Thai, and American menu options provides something for nearly every taste. Very vegetarian friendly as well. The service is always wonderful as well, with dedicated staff who care for your experience at every step. Highly recommend!

Amanda T.

Yelp
My employer had cinco 5 catered for staff appreciation. Amazingly yummy tacos for being catered and having a later lunch. Was still delicious. Best chicken tacos around!
google avatar

Merideth M.

Yelp
Service was great. Food was super fresh and came out fast! Being from SouthTexas, I know good Mexican food. The Michoacán fajitas were fantastic!! Their salsa trio was great- variety of heat levels. Pork tamal and guacamole with fresh made chips appetizer were delish! Two adults split the fajita skillet with fresh corn tortillas. We will be back!!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
First of all, everyone here is extremely welcoming and friendly. They just couldn't get any nicer. The food is absolutely outstanding. The appetizers were delicious and the combination of Mexican and Thai food is interesting and enjoyable.
google avatar

Tracey C.

Yelp
Two different styles of food, and so far everything I have had has been delicious. Even their cocktails are yummy. Try the pomegranate cosmopolitan. It is delicious! The staff are always super friendly and efficient. Love coming here.

Molly D.

Yelp
Cinco 5 is famous to local students for its "margarita towers". Always fun when you have enough people. I believe there is a 4 person minimum requirement. In terms of food, everything I've tried is delicious! I had the chicken fajita quesadilla and it was perfect. Fresh, juicy, well seasoned. Wonderful Mexican food in South Bend!

Yelp
We had a great time before a show at Morris Civic around the corner. It was a busy night, with a bit of a wait, but was worth it. Two of my favorite types of food - Mexican and Thai - which seems like an odd mix, but if you think about, both are based on unique flavors and they have a lot of it. Their salsa is great, the sauces with the Thai food were excellent and their specialty margaritas were really good. There is something for everyone on the menu. Despite being busy, we had excellent service as well.

Jamie G.

Yelp
This place was great! The menu is Thai AND Mexican! Best of both worlds! My husband had the Pad Prik Pao. It was really good. I had the Chicken Fajita Quesadilla and it was amazing!!!! We sat and the bar & the bartender was sweet & engaging. Would highly recommend this place.

Aiesha W.

Yelp
Deep fried tamales were wonderful! Drinks were awesome. Both the hostess and service displayed excellent customer service. I look forward to going back again.
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
Excellent food! I had the veggie pad pak, and my husband had the chicken fajitas. We also had a large margarita and homemade chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were outstanding! We are already looking forward to our next time eating here.

Tony N.

Yelp
I love this place. Pad Thai is awesome. Spicy Cucumber Margaritas are the best. Only thing holding them back is their hours are weird and you can't hardly get in in the evenings.
google avatar

Jordan H.

Yelp
Listen, if you're coming for Mexican...don't It doesn't equate to a normal/traditional Mexican joint...bougie is the word. Now it's not "bad" just not what you'd expect. NOW IF YOU CAME TO DRINK! YES ish I don't know how much it cost but it's REAL good The chips salsa and guacamole is REAL GREAT
google avatar

Nikki B.

Yelp
Food was FANTASTIC! The servers and bartenders are great!!! Best margaritas I've had in long time. Highly recommend the Pama margarita!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
This is a solidly good Mexican place. The salsa and chips and guacamole are really very good and definitely one of the stars of the show. The Mexican food is pretty decent, nothing overly special. I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce on the shrimp tacos but the shrimp itself was good. However, for the price and fun Mexican environment it's worth a visit!
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Food was very good, but service is where this place really shines. Every employee seemed genuinely interested in the restaurant's success.
google avatar

Marcus F.

Yelp
First time coming here and it was awesome. Will come back and would refer to family and friends

Lynn H.

Yelp
Excellent meals. Fajitas were very flavorful. Enchiladas were good too. They allowed us to have al pastor meat with the enchiladas. Wait was not bad either, but the football team wasn't in town that weekend either.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for a recent weekday lunch thanks to a $20 groupon we had. It wasn't too busy, service was spot on and we were actually able to get in and out in just under an hour. The lunch menu includes a mix Mexican and Thai options (the Thai is a carryover from the former Siam Thai restaurant). Prices are very reasonable - if we hadn't ordered an app, we wouldn't have used the full Groupon value. We couldn't resist the guacamole as a starter and it didn't disappoint. The only downside was that the chips were a little greasy. I ordered the Mexican quesadilla with chicken, cheese and fresh jalapeños - the perfect amount of spice. It was served with a side of guac, rice and beans. My husband gladly helped me out with the beans and said they were great. My husband opted for one of the burritos with steak and chorizo which he loved. Our waitress was great - drink refills without asking and checking in at the perfect times. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
I really didn't like my food. The service was fine but I just didn't like my food. So maybe my first mistake was ordering pad Thai at a place called Cinco 5. It had a weird earthy after taste. The chicken was cooked okay but the tofu was rubbery. I always think pad Thai is safe but this is my least favorite pad Thai I've had. However the people I ate with that got Mexican food liked their dishes. I also had their guacamole and chips. Their guac was delightful. So I guess I would recommend this place for Mexican food.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for lunch today. It's a fusion of... Mexican, American, and Thai! The Thai place that was nearby closed so the chef came to work here and now you have it! The service was quick and polite. The host greeted the moment we stepped in. I ordered the pad see ewe and it had really good flavor but the noodle were kind of hard which means it's not the freshest as normally those noodles get hard if it's been sitting a few days. I'll definitely try the pad Thai if we come back. The boyfriend got a Chicken quesadilla with beans and rice and it was good. We got 10% off when we showed the yelp check in though the server didn't know what it was and went to ask. Nice place to grab lunch and catch up. Dinner does seem to be a bit expensive though.
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
The Siam Dumplings with accompanying sauce, was delicious! Do yourself a favor and order the Spicy Cucumber Margarita. It is soooo good. Great outdoor seating area and nice, knowledgeable servers. Can't wait to try the #33Quesadilla as my main course when it comes out
google avatar

Yelp
We love Cinco! They have a great location in DTSB. The staff is always so friendly and attentive and their chips & salsa is my favorite in the area. We love to come here because I can get some tacos and the fiancé can get some sort of spicy asian noodle concoction. Just be weary of finding parking if there is an event going on at the Morris; the good news is the parking garage is within walking distance.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Cinco 5 is pretty consistent. Our dinner here tonight was pretty much as it always is, well prepared. Their "Thai chefs" were at a catering event...so no Thai food allowed this evening. My mojito was great, I had seafood fajitas and my wife had blackened salmonw rice and grilled asparagus.it was all good and a good value...2 drinks 2 entres and an appetizer for 55.00 plus tip.

Alexis M.

Yelp
Drinks were good. Service was great. Food was poor. I'll give it a try again if I have the chance but may be a while.
google avatar

Christian L.

Yelp
Found this restaurant just walking around downtown and we found this gem. This restaurant was a little unassuming at first but once my family and I sat down we were greeted with fast friendly service. The food was wonderful I truly recommend the fried tamales. We will definitely return soon!

Josh N.

Yelp
Food was excellent and service was even better! Definitely on my list of restaurants in the area.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
I'd like to enjoy this place but I don't. Their communication is equivalent to a crayon eating 5 year old who answers the phone for their parents. Who ever the high schooler is who answers the phone there really needs to be fired. They kept confusing teriyaki with soy sauce, did t know what tempura was. Kept having to ask their manager and would leave you hanging for about 5 minutes. They always mix up their menus when talking to me. And nothing I get is ever correct. I'll just stick to a McDouble at Micky
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Unfortunately the advertising strength of this restaurant is its own culinary demise. Boasting cuisines from across the world, Cinco 5 fails to deliver on any single one of them. While this may seem like a great place to check out for groups with diverse palate preferences, it will certainly succeed in disappointing each one. Aside from the awkwardly sweet pad Thai, the bland pizza, and dry pasta, the atmosphere is hip and there's plenty of space to accommodate large groups. The service is hit or miss, landing Cinco 5 with an overall 2 stars.
google avatar

Kristie K.

Yelp
I drove up to South Bend to meet up with a bunch of my girlfriends here for dinner one weekend. Not being familiar with the town or the restaurant, I assumed that we were going to be enjoying Mexican food. Cinco, right? Well, this restaurant offers up plenty of Mexican plates, but there is also Asian and some burgers. I guess if no one can agree on a type of food, or like in our case, you have a big party and you want to cover your bases, a place like this works. I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were fine. I liked the corn tortillas and all the lime wedges that came on the plate, but was really hoping for more of a pow in my mouth. Also, it wasn't a lot of food. Word to the wise, DO NOT assume that chips and salsa come complementary on your table. They do not. If you ask for some at the table, because you think you're in a Mexican restaurant and they are complimentary, you will get them and be charged for them.
google avatar

Marianne L.

Yelp
I was greeted by a friendly hostess and the server. The server was excellent and very attentive, she brought out our drinks and food quickly. The jasmine rice has a very wonderful taste and most of what I ate that night. I will return and try the Mexican flair next time.
google avatar

Jennea S.

Yelp
The Thai food is amazing here! I am a Thai food snob and this is one of the best Thai places around! Staff is very friendly!
