The Best Restaurants and Bars For a First Date in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"For the date that appreciates film and food, there’s no better bet than Cinema Moderne. Grab a bite in an adjoining café-bar before enjoying a show in their quaint, 54-seat theatre. Keep an eye out for regularly scheduled special events as well." - Mallory Frayn

Cinema Moderne Opens in Mile End With Movies and Coffee — and Other Openings | Eater Montreal

"On St-Laurent near Fairmount in Mile End, I discovered Cinéma Moderne, a new hybrid that combines a coffee shop with a micro-cinema; the café — complete with a large terrasse — opened a few weeks ago and the cinema has just launched. Run by Post‑Moderne's Alexandre Domingue and former RIDM director Roxanne Sayegh, it focuses on festival-friendly screenings; the café serves the usual coffee standards plus steamed bao bun sandwiches and nitro cold brew, is fully licensed for beer and wine, and even lets you take those drinks into screenings." - Tim Forster

I love this place. The smell of coffee during a movie for me > way better than those big cinema places. I also love that i can experience " old " movies on a big screen for the first time, like Princess Mononoke in Japanese ! Super cool. The employees are always nice too. The latte is pretty decent too. Popcorn was good last time I went

It was a very cozy and nice cinema with bar. The IPA was awesome! And we enjoyed the outdoor seating while waiting for the movie to start! Just one thing downside, we didn't like was there were some bugs inside the theater room, hovering around our food, and we think we might've eaten some with our popcorn. Also the chairs are a bit crowded and don't have good neck support. Other than those, it was a great experience!

My first time here was to see Perfect Blue. Small and cozy place. The people working here are kind and even though I've seen the movie before and knew what to expect, I appreciate that they took the time to give a trigger warning in French and English before the film. It's a pretty intense film and not everyone is prepared for how heavy it becomes. Theatre was very clean which I appreciate. My only issue is with the seats. Not super comfortable, and not much support. But I read in another review that's a WIP, so I'm glad they're working on that to ensure guests have a great experience :) I'll definitely be back soon!

I love everything about this place—except the chairs. They’re honestly some of the most uncomfortable, back-breaking seats I’ve ever used. I’m not even that tall and still had almost no neck support. At times, my back hurt so much I couldn’t even focus on the scenes. I really hope they invest in better chairs soon

Cozy small theatre that screens a lot of foreign classics and 4K restorations of animated films. Went here for the first time to watch the 4K restoration of Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon and loved it.

Great place for a cozy night with friends. A bit exensive for my taste, but you can have fun!

Google
Cute little theatre with a new and updated concession stand selling cafe-style treats and drink, and extra buttery popcorn! I would recommend the Almond Croissant. I also really admire the movie choices being previewed.

Google
Best collection of independent films in Montreal. I love coming here spontaneously to see whatever is showing. Great beers on top, pretty good coffee, I always grab a big bowl of popcorn. Be on time to the film, they’re not so accommodating for late arrivals. The film starts immediately, no commercials. Best rows are the two farthest back (F & G). Even the middle rows you still look up a bit at the screen. Be aware of the language designations: VOA - English audio, no captions VOF - French audio, no captions VOSTA - original audio, English captions VOSTF - original audio, French captions

Yelp
Such a fantastic concept for a coffee shop, having regular showings of movies. Staff was helpful in giving dinner recommendations as well.

Yelp
This is not your typical movie theatre - it's a redefined cinematic experience! Cinema Moderne moderne provides a unique space where you can enjoy a carefully curated selection of nifty animations, remastered classics, cult movies, documentaries, mainstream or more niche and short films, while enjoying a cup or coffee, glass of wine or cocktail before, during or after the viewing! In fact, pay attention to the programming as filmmakers and specials guests will be present, such as Denis Villeneuve during it's sold out presentation of Blade Runner 2049 last Sunday. A state of the art equipped theatre, with 4K projectors, seats about 54 people and provides daily screenings at 7pm and 9pm and all day on the weekends. The fronting intimate 'café-slash-bar' provides a perfect area to get out of our traditional "web streaming bubble", gather in an intimate yet vibrant environment, socialize and mingle with locals over a beverage or food or your choice at any time or the day. Although it wasn't too busy and people were strolling in and out quite a bit, I could imagine this place getting crowded at peak times. On the menu were an assortment of steamed bao buns including vegetarian, gravlax, chicken or smoked meat and even a breakfast bao which I had the chance to taste with a side salad with glass of fresh pressed orange juice during brunch. There's also a choice cleverly named brews on tap, as well nice wine card and hand crafted cocktails. Located upstairs, is a post-production company called Post-Moderne, where many movies are go through finalisation processes such as colorisation. Overall, the theatre, café-bar, and post-prod company combination is a very smart use of space and very interesting concept to discover. Please do come and experience what the founders, Roxanne Sayegh and Alexandre Domingue, have been researching for so long in Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Mexico City, and finally transform their dream into reality right here in Montreal - hopefully stating a revolutionary movement that will make pull us cinephiles out of our couches back into the theatre! You have a baby or kids? No worries, this place is very family friendly, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings. So no excuses - come and join me!

Yelp
This place is dope. Loved the cafe vibe, cute terrace and laid back staff. Had the chance to try their latte and yogourt, which were both excellent. The yogourt was more decadent then expected (it's made with creme fraiche and they add caramelized pears), but it's truly delicious, just not the healthy choice I thought it would be. They also have an upscale cinema, where you can enjoy a nice snack or lass of wine, while watching an indie film. Really looking forward to having a babysitter to try it out!

Yelp
Honestly, I loved this place. I didn't have a full meal but for a break, what a welcoming and relaxing environment. Service is impeccable and the design and setup is great for a stop by for two. I plan on coming back to eat more, but the yogurt, coffee and tea was were excellent and we'll priced. The staff was helpful and flexible all the signs of a new go to place in the area. Yet to catch a film, but that is next. Enjoy!
