The Best Affordable Hotels in Rome

"It’s always refreshing to find smart, affordable hotels in Rome. The city's new citizenM strikes the balance with its pleasingly styled rooms (clean lines, modern furniture), and while they’re not huge, the designers have made the most of the space, with king-sized beds fitted wall to wall, big HDTVs beside expansive windows, and rain showers in the bathrooms. The lobby’s got a colorful art collection, and the canteenM bar is open 24/7. The 162 rooms are smartly furnished with all the essentials and a bit more—we’d call it minimalist-attractive. Rooms are cozy and compact, and the designers have made the best use of the space; beds, for example, are enormous with comfortable mattresses and super soft linens. Floor space is sacrificed, but the widescreen TV and super-fast Wi-Fi more than make up for it. Bathrooms feature powerful rain showers. Everything in the rooms, from the blinds to the lights to the air-conditioning temperature, can be controlled via in-room iPads or the citizenM app." - Maresa Manara

citizenM Roma Isola Tiberina Hotel

"Why book It’s always refreshing to find smart, affordable hotels in Rome like the new CitizenM. The rooms are pleasingly styled (clean lines, modern furniture) and while they’re not huge, the designers have made the most of the space, with King-sized beds fitted wall to wall, big HD TVs beside expansive windows, and rain showers in the bathrooms. The lobby’s got a colorful art collection, and the canteenM bar is open 24/7. Set the scene A blend of informality, cool design and affordability, CitizenM’s first foray into the Italian market doesn’t disappoint. In a former journalists union building on the Tiber, just a few steps from buzzy Trastevere, it manages to feel more like a friend’s eclectic apartment than a hotel. In place of a lobby there’s a big living room, with smatterings of objects, art and books, and comfortable designer furniture placed ‘just so’. The walls are draped with brightly colored art murals and documentary-style photography from Italian artists Piero Percoco and Camillo Pasquarelli—making the whole experience decidedly more interesting than your average, medium-cost hotel. The backstory The original building designed and built in the late 1950s has had a hipster makeover, with big, floor to ceiling windows, colorful mid-century furniture and concrete floors. CitizenM has made its name with a commitment to art, which they show off in an ever-evolving wheel of collaborations with emerging and established artists. Here, Roman artist UNO, known for his street art murals, has taken over the ground floor with a striking artwork titled Guarda in Alto, 2023 “look high,” a tribute to the city of Rome. The rooms The 162 rooms are smartly furnished with all the essentials and a bit more—we’d call it minimalist-attractive. Rooms are cosy and compact, and the designers have made best use of the space; beds, for example, are enormous with comfortable mattresses and super soft linens. Floor space is sacrificed, but the widescreen TV and super-fast Wi-Fi more than make up for it. Bathrooms feature powerful rain showers and decent size bottles of shower gel and shampoo (pack your own moisturizer). Everything in the rooms, from the blinds to the lights to the air-conditioning temperature, can be controlled via in-room iPads or the citizenM App. Food and drink There’s no restaurant on-site but the canteenM bar is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and offers breakfast, snacks and coffee—all of which can be enjoyed on the rooftop terrace. The neighborhood The immediate area around the hotel doesn’t offer much (though you’ll find a supermarket 100 yards away and a small coffee shop just across the river) but you’ve got the Vatican several blocks to the west, Colosseum and Forum to the east and the Pantheon and Trevi fountain just north, and the Trastevere neighborhood is a nice walk away. The service The staff (Mia, Remi and Daniela on our visit) are lovely. Kid sick in the middle of the night? They’ll change your bed sheets immediately, no questions asked. Wondering what to do on a quiet Sunday afternoon in Rome? They’ve got you covered. Eco effort CitizenM has a broad environmental ethos, with all the brand’s hotels either holding green building certificates or working towards achieving them. CitizenM Rome Isola Tiberina is citizenM’s first electrified hotel, meaning the hotel doesn’t use gas and purchases green electricity, meaning all stays are low-carbon. There’s no single-use plastic in the property, and they’re looking to reduce water usage too."

citizenM Roma Isola Tiberina (Rome, Lazio) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"CitizenM can always be counted on to provide budget-friendly rooms in improbably central locations, with a generous measure of a certain kind of style. What CitizenM Roma Isola Tiberia offers isn’t high-end Roman luxury, of course, but cheerfully efficient modern Dutch design. It’s a mid-century building, which suits the modernist concept to a tee, and there’s plenty of local color to be found here — from contemporary Italian art in the public spaces to the elevated views of the Eternal City from the hotel’s hip rooftop bar." - Tablet Hotels

We enjoyed our stay at the CitizenM hotel. The location and amenities were wonderful. The location was walkable to most locations. We only didn’t walk to early morning tours simply meeting times. It is a short walk across the river to Testevere for lots of choices for dinner.||There is a great rooftop terrace with tables, comfortable chairs, and a self service bar dispensing drinks by using your room card. ||It was a hot July visit so air conditioning and comfortable beds were important. The ac worked great and the beds and showers were comfortable.

Modern well-maintained hotel in an excellent location. Staff were great. I liked that it was right on the river in the historic district with easy access to many sights. Trastevere is right across the bridge. The breakfast buffet was great. One thing to note: the rooms accommodate only two people because they're small, though the bathrooms are good-sized. Just know that the size won't suit people who want more space to move around in the room. On the plus side, south-facing rooms overlook the river and offer fantastic views. Amazing.

This was my second stay at this hotel, and I highly recommend it. The room is not large, but it is spacious enough for a leisure trip, especially for those looking to explore the city and enjoy comfort at the end of the day. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and waking up to the view of the river from the window is delightful. The curtains are also effective at blocking out light. The bathroom is adequately sized and features a good shower with enjoyable lighting. While there is room for improvement in the amenities, they are still satisfactory. The breakfast is exceptional, offering a wide variety of options, high-quality food, and excellent barista coffee. The location is very convenient; it is near the tourist highlights but situated in a calm and quiet neighbourhood, making it easy to get around. The staff is welcoming and provides excellent service.

Great location near Isola Tiburina with easy access to the east part of Trastevere. I especially appreciated the public spaces of this hotel with ample seating for those wishing to work, to sit alone or in groups. The bar has good beer and a nice selection of wines by the glass. There is a water fountain to fill your bottle for the day or the night, something that all hotels should have! Breakfast is excellent. I enjoyed the freshly squeezed orange juice and the croissants. Staff are enthusiastic and customer focused. My room was small but comfortable and with a great bathroom. Bed very comfortable. Overall a pleasant experience. Recommended.

Google
Great hotel to stay in Rome. The location is perfect, close to major attractions in the city, you can easily reach trastevere walking where you’ll find many food and bar options. The quality of everything in the room is really high, the bed is super comfortable. There is a rooftop terrace where we chilled every afternoon, perfect way of getting ready for the night and enjoy the sunset. Definitely recommend it.

First of all, I seldom leave reviews to hotel. Anyway, spent 4 days in Rome. Nothing fancy but location to tourist spots is a plus. They have the same breakfast during our 4-day stay. It is boring and they should have variety of food instead. Room is small but decent size for couple. I hope check in process will be smoother. Receptionist should do their job instead of self check in and I think it is more efficient. If I’ll visit Rome again, I’d stay in other hotel. But for first timers, location is a PLUS. Overall, its a mediocre hotel. Don’t expect too much 🙂

I seriously love this hotel so much. Location, room, bed, breakfast till 11, safe and fun. The roof top bar area was nice to hang out at the end of the day before heading out for the evening. I’m staying at a different hotel for my last two nights in Rome and I’m regretting every minute of it. I will 100% stay at Citizen M again when I come back to Rome!

I stayed here three nights at the end of my trip and I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and spacious my single room was. I’m not sure if all layouts are the same but for me traveling solo it was enough. I had a room on the highest floor near the roof (528). The shower was great pressure and glad they provide shampoo and conditioner and liquid soap. Yes you need to set the cleaning schedule but this takes a few minutes. My room was cleaned well and the location is great. Near Camp D’Fiori and Trastevere area. Easy to get to by taxi from Termini (about $15 euro). Taxi to airport is a flat 55 euro and staff can pre-order for you. This is a farther walk from city center (Spanish steps is about 20-25 min walk) but I like being away from the super touristy areas. Didn’t get the breakfast since there’s a ton of eating options around.

Yelp
My husband and I have traveled around the world and have stayed in high end places. Paolo treated us like royalty, they welcomed us with champagne and made us feel at home. We have travel to Roma four other times and he pointed out amazing sights we haven't seen before. It's the perfect boutique hotel. Will be back!!!

Yelp
What an amazing experience! Not only is this hotel in the perfect location for walking to all of Rome's attractions, but the hotel itself is very nice! Paolo is the man! He treated us very well along with all his friendly staff. No complaints about the room itself, and the hotel has an awesome bar inside and a cool rooftop for hanging out at nighttime. This was the perfect honeymoon stay for my wife and I on our first trip to Rome.

The rooms had A/C the bedrooms were immaculate & the bathroom was beautiful. But the free breakfasts everyday if you wanted was out of this world cappuccino's everyone was in heaven..to start out our day!! :) & the Roof top patio was so relaxing. To have a quite spot. Or a night cap. I fell in love with this Hotel. We'll be back..Italy

Yelp
After a long flight from San Antonio, we choose Hotel Monte Cenci for the wonderful reviews but also because it was a boutique hotel in a great area close to the attractions. The person checking is in was delightful, helpful and when she found out that it was our 25th anniversary trip, she got someone to bring out some percescco. It was so good and refreshing. She said to always ask for the local variety of wines at restaurants. When we got back to the hotel after dinner- a staff member delivered some champagne to congratulate us. This hotel reminded me of a place we stayed at for our honeymoon with the attention to detail and service. I'm so glad I booked it again for our return in a week from our cruise. The room is clean, and charming. The bathroom is very romantic with a tub big enough for 2!

Yelp
Great hotel, stylish, nice rooftop breakfast, great location, very helpful front desk personnel

Mark H.

Yelp
This is an hourly hotel in disrepair. The front desk does not answer the phone. Checkin took way too long, about 45 minutes. Excessive, mostly spent with the checkin agent highlighting information about what they would charge you extra for. First room, AC does not work. We yelled for the agent as she walked away but she either ignored us or didn't hear. Then we tried calling, called 9 times in 20 min no answer. Then the bellhop arrives with our luggage, we ask him to fix the AC and he couldn't. He said he would talk to the front desk about changing our room. He didn't, we found him cleaning the floor and the front desk had no idea. The front desk said she had just one room left. Immediately we could tell the lock didn't work. The toilet also ran forever when used. The room had the grossest red carpet we ever saw. It felt filthy. We called hotels.com and begged for a refund, but hotels.com said they couldn't reach the front desk. At this point, we had wasted 3 hours of our one night in Rome, and decided to stay but they just don't make enough soap in the world for us to feel clean again. Do not stay here.

Yelp
While we only had one night here on the way out of the country, it was a great experience and will definitely stay here again. The staff was very friendly and helpful and parked our car in their medieval cave and gave us great dinner recommendation. The room was great and the air conditioning was awesome when it was super hot outside. Great location to walk to anywhere.

Yelp
This place is UNBELIEVABLE clean rooms , friendly team and within steps of all the sites in the city. Everyone from Paolo at the desk and Hilaria at the breakfast area were outstanding, felt like we were leaving family when we left. We travel very often and most of the times we stay in higher end properties but after reading reviews of this place in both Google and TripAdvisor we decided to give it a chance, one of the best stays we have ever had in a property. TIP : the entrance of the hotel is up the ramp on the side street.

Yelp
We loved Monte Cenci. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, the manager went out of his way to give us a map of the city with labeled potential walking tour routes, and there was a handwritten note waiting for us when we entered the room. The rooms were spacious, modern and lovely. The bed was extremely comfortable. The rooftop bar added a great touch too! Thank you Monte Cenci!!!

Yelp
Boutique style quarters in a relaxed hotel featuring free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, a roof top bar & a very accomodating staff. The rooms are updated, featuring a swanky therapy light rainshower and our room in particular had a private patio terrace. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend Monte Cenci.

Yelp
So, we stayed here for two nights when we first got to Italy. Had a bit of a disaster with the airlines. When we got here, they were open arms, got us in our room and then sent prosecco to us. Amazing rooms, the breakfast is lovingly laid out and delicious. Beds are amazingly comfortable. They give you a cell phone to use here with free international calls. And the roof top bar is an inviting escape from the streets. We came back to this hotel 12 days later, and they were just as amazing and thrilled to have us back. The sweet touches of sending us two glasses at prosecco at midnight when we just got back we're over the top. I would stay here again and again. They could teach other hotels a few things about customer service!! A five star experience.
