NYC Restaurant Closures of 2019 | Eater NY

"I was devastated by City Bakery’s closing — their hot chocolate month was a beloved ritual, I grabbed a last hot chocolate a week before they shut, and I know I’ll feel the loss especially come February without that seasonal comfort." - Eater Staff

Google
Great food, kind people. I Love the vibe and prices are still very affordable, especially for the high quality of food. Also, it’s one of the few places that people are still happy to work here in Asheville. Unfortunately, it’s been grumpy vibes in Asheville since Covid. I’ve given up on so many restaurants here for price or service but they have figured out something here. Happy to keep coming regularly! You guys help make my day better. Thank you staff and owners!

Erin W.

Google
I was craving a cinnamon roll and boy am I glad I tried it here! It was literally the best cinnamon roll that I have ever had in my life. It was crispy and soft at the same time. The dough they make is pure perfection! We also got a chocolate croissant, cortado, and an iced caramel latte, all which were pretty good!

Google
Walked here this morning and it didn't disappoint! Loved the farmhouse breakfast sandwich and I'll definitely be ordering that again in the future! Super yummy! I also like the vibes in here too. Will be back as a matter of fact! Thanks City Bakery!

Google
We haven’t been here for a while and decided to pop in for breakfast. The farm sandwich and ham and cheese biscuit were absolutely delicious!! Nice vibe at breakfast. Mental note to be back soon.

Google
Perfect breakfast spot on our way out of Asheville! We stopped at 8:15 am on a Saturday and parking was available and not too busy when we arrived. The hot mocha, biscuit sandwiches and chocolate chip scone were amazing.

Google
Quite disappointed in my experience with City Bakery today. My husband went in to get us breakfast sandwiches and ordered my a bacon and egg sandwich on an everything bagel as he saw them in the window and they looked delicious. What he received was not at all what was in the window. Instead, it was a crispy, sesame seed covered bun that was dry and tasted nothing like the everything bagel he wanted. Especially for a 50 cent up charge, it was quite disappointing and we will not be returning in the future :/

Google
Got a Vanilla ice latte which was delicious. And got the Ciabatta BBLT Sandwich, it was good, it was a lot for one person personally so it's big enough to split in my opinion. Very saucy though. Very good Customer service.

Google
One of the only places in town still offering curbside service. A lifesaver for me as a mom with 3 young kids! I always get the ham and cheese cheddar scallion biscuit sandwich. Best bakery around. Delicious breakfast, brunch, and lunch!

Yelp
Really delicious! We ordered pick up on chow now before we hit the road early in the morning to head back to Florida, so we wanted some good sustenance. The online ordering was lacking descriptiveness so I wasn't sure what to expect when we ordered the avocado toast and the breakfast sandwiches but the size did not disappointment. One avocado toast order came with two large slices of sourdough (I recommend adding egg, onion, and bacon as they put that right on top and it's divine). The breakfast sandwich looked kinda small in photos but was the size of a freaking softball and tasted great. I do wish there was an option for a breakfast sandwich on sourdough because the cheddar biscuit was a little heavy. Lattes and chocolate croissant - super tasty too. If they could work on adding more info to the online ordering I think that would be helpful but the food is great.

Yelp
We love walking into this place: the hum of the breakfast crowd; the wood accents; big windows. Recommend the sticky buns! The coffee is intelligentsia and served in real mugs.

Yelp
City Bakery was a short walk from where we were staying, so it became our breakfast spot by default. Fortunately, it proved to be a good one. Bread may be their calling card, but they do have more substantial fare (biscuits, bagels, sandwiches, etc.) as well. We went with a pair of coffee drinks and a chocolate croissant as well as a loaf of Jewish rye to take home. Though they keep busy here, staff were pleasant and accommodating. The coffee drinks were smooth, and when we eventually broke into the rye, it had a nice crust and made for an excellent sandwich bread. The croissant was thicker and less flaky than expected. It definitely wasn't bad, but I've been spoiled by better options back home. Whether you're seeking bread, a breakfast bite, or caffeination to keep you going, City Bakery is a reliable option.

Yelp
I really like this place. I go to the Charlotte St location. Staff is so kind. Tables always clean. Food always fresh and yummy. Coffee gets cold in the carafe. They don't make it fresh in the afternoon before close -- so they made me an americano for the brewed coffee price -- again: kind! I always feel welcomed and they go above and beyond. Asheville can be hit or miss in that department and city bakery is winning! Keep up the great work!

Yelp
This was my first visit. We found out about the sourdough from the local grocery stores that sell it. So yum. Had to stop by and see their other goodies. I am always a sucker for an apple fritter and theirs is like monkey bread. Great flavor. You can eat inside or there are a few tables outside. If you walk in not hungry, this will change very quickly. So many yummy smells. I will try a breakfast sandwich the next time we stop by. Staff is very friendly, especially Theresa who helped us with the sourdough order.
google avatar

Brittany M.

Yelp
THIS IS THE BEST SOURDOUGH BREAD IN THE WORLD. I've had sourdough from San Francisco to Paris, and I'm telling you, City Bakery is everything. We drove from our property in Maggie Valley all the way to Asheville just to buy it from the source. Theresa, a beautiful soul, is soooo kind and found us an extra loaf to buy in back. But then, we bought a challah (something I only just discovered) and my better half went for a pastry. Everything is ohhhhhmyyyyygoodness...lush! They have an extra dining room for those ordering in/brunching. If you buy nothing else in Asheville, buy City Bakery bread! I'm in love.
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great food. This was a great spot for breakfast, just a few blocks from our Air BnB. The apple fritter was unique and delicious.
google avatar

Jojo J.

Yelp
The craving hit and City Bakery quenched it! After a morning hike, I was in the mood for a delicious, naughty treat and City Bakery delivered! The moment I walked in, the warm, buttery aroma had me hooked. I went for a sticky bun... Absolute perfection. Flaky, rich, sticky, and just the right balance of sweetness. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere cozy, and every bite was worth it. Can't wait to come back and try something else out!

Yelp
This comfy, coffee-house style restaurant fit our bill for a tasty breakfast and lunch combo. Friendly folks and good prices along with their tasty menu would have me returning if I lived nearby.

Yelp
I've been coming from California to visit my daughter in Asheville and I always return to the city bakery.. I get the turkey day sandwich for my daughter and the BLT for my son-in-law.. always a hit.. I love the cheddar biscuits and I buy a sticky bun or cinnamon roll for my grandson. He loves it. There are a lot of great places in Asheville to go--city bakery has to be near the top. Keep up the good work.
google avatar

Neisha M.

Yelp
Stopped here early in the morning to pick up some beads for breakfast. We got a bagel, a croissant, an Apple fritter, and a chive and onion biscuit. All were very good as it was fresh. Did not try any of the sweet treats. Patrons were there early picking up bread and ordering sandwiches. The service was quick and friendly. I would definitely come back again if I'm in Asheville.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Breakfast torta is one of my top 3 breakfast sandwiches of all time. I always want to try other stuff but can't get myself to bc the torta is so good. The ciabatta it comes on is perfectly crispy on the outside and airy on the inside. C

Yelp
The service is great and fast, the atmosphere is very nice and the coffee and sweets are wonderful. We went back every day of our vacation for a coffee break, with the exception of going to the Owl Bakery up the street one day - which was $8 more for the same order and the taste was lacking.
google avatar

Teah Q.

Yelp
Love this spot! I would come back! The sour dough was fresh and the sprouts/ avocado was fresh. The matcha was perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been a fav for years. From sitting to enjoy a brew to grabbing to go, I love it. The parking and drive is pretty crazy but if you go on a more off time, it's easier to navigate that parking lot and turn. The staff are always so kind. They stay busy. The bread and baked goods are wonderful. From cinnamon rolls to cookies, they have it all. I love those bagels. Especially toasted as a sammy. They have great vegetarian options. Pretty expensive these days but isn't everything? The coffee is not cheap but definitely quality. They have a ton of options as well as fresh hot brew. Nice places to sit and work or chat. Pretty loud and sunny though.

Yelp
What a cute little cozy gem. A cold overcasted and smokey :( day. We looked at the continental breakfast from our hotel room and decided that would not be how our bellies got full. So we came across this cute place. What a cozy place tucked in a small little down outside of Asheville. My GAWD these cheddar, bacon and green onion biscuits are heavenly! We both got that sausage egg and cheese and (without cheese) sandwiches and man oh man are they HUGE! We killed them in just a few short minutes. We spent about just close to $13 $5.75 a sandwich. We also bought some stuffing bread. Bread that is made to be cut up (cubed) baked / toasted off and used for stuffing. Also beware they do not take apple pay (tap) you must have card, cash or be able to order online. We will be back!
google avatar

Brianna A.

Yelp
Finally made it to City Bakery! The place was cozy but packed to the brim, I ordered an egg and cheese on a biscuit. It was good, might come back if I'm over there. But not rushing. Their bread is spectacular, some of the best sourdough I've had!

H T.

Yelp
Delicious, definitely going again! Cute atmosphere. Super friendly employees!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Found this place near our airbnb and glad we did. I had the bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant and it was delicious. But my favorite thing was the piece of avocado toast that I tried.
google avatar

Karyn S.

Yelp
Hearty and delicious breakfast! Both locals and visitors filled the place. The homemade breads put these sandwiches over the top! We'll be back soon!

Yelp
A friend and I visited City Bakery while staying at a nearby Airbnb. We had breakfast there and ordered breakfast sandwiches and biscuits. You order at the counter, are given a number sign, find a seat and the staff brings the food to you. The food and coffee was very good. The service was quick. The bakery shared space with a restaurant next door for seating. It was also dog friendly. I would definitely return if I was in the area again.

Yelp
We were looking for lunch from a local bakery that also served sandwiches on their house bread, and City Bakery came up as a recommended option. What a great choice! We reached the spot around 2pm and quickly ordered - the seating was spacious and there was good room for our party of 8. I got the Avo Melt (avocado, goat cheese, tomato, spinach, and basil) grilled to melty perfection with a side of chips. My family got the Avogoddess (avocado, mozzarella, tomato, cucumber, spring mix and green goddess sauce) and the Garden Bagel (garlic herb cream cheese, sprouts, spinach, cucumber, red onion on everything bagel), both of which they really enjoyed. DEFINITELY get a side of their green goddess side to lather onto any sandwich you get - this sauce is perfection, and is like pesto and mayo had a beautiful and tasty baby - it elevated the sandwiches and even our chips. Minus one star for running out of bakery items pretty early and small portion sizes for each sandwich, but overall a solid light lunch spot!

Yelp
Found this cute place online to grab breakfast. It's a small cafe vibe people come to grab drinks/food Togo. Immediately the barista/cashier weren't the nicest. When ordering the girl had attitude for no reason when the place wasn't busy. Also the red head barista wasn't friendly at all. The food was great but the customer service ruined the experience for me. :/
google avatar

Nikolai Y.

Yelp
This is a fantastic place to go to for breakfast! The prices are very fair especially with everything being made in house! The breakfast sandwiches are divine and the service was wonderful. When we went in it was very busy but we were still able to find seating! The interior is beautiful with artwork hung all over the walls and Victorian accents on the ceilings! We are only in Asheville for a little bit, but this will definitely be our go to spot every time we visit Asheville!
google avatar

Yelp
Get the sausage breakfast sandwich if you want to live with no regrets! So good! They are open for curbside during covid and have a small patio area, as well. Cinnamon rolls are literally dynamite. Don't leave without one!

Candy A.

Yelp
I've been many times and my favorite was always the stuffed avocado. The scoops of Chicken salad were great, the last 3 times I've been there the chicken salad scoops were the size of small meatballs. I will never order that again. Not worth the money. And I tipped 20%

Meagan R.

Yelp
The avocado toast is AMAZING!! Super filling and has a hint of lime that was so delicious.

Carter L.

Yelp
Best bagel I've had in a while! I loved the garlic herb CC and it went very well with the everything bagel!!

Yelp
It's was not a great morning for us at this bakery. It was not terribly crowded when we arrived and the staff was hustling! We were able to order quickly. We asked for two bagles, water, and a chai charger. We were told they were out of chai, so my husband changed his order to a coffee. No big deal. We sat down and waited for our order. 20 minutes later and hearing three other people order chai chargers and get them, we were getting a little put out. My husband went and asked about our order. Opps! We were told they had so many orders to come in online that our order was not ready yet. Mind you, they had only put two small bags on the take out stand and called out another order. After we asked about our food, they did bring an apology cookie. Ten minutes later, we finally got our food. We wanted to get on the road, so we left. When we got to the car, the cream cheese on my husband's bagel was so melted it was just thick goo and could not be eaten in the car without a huge mess. I ordered a bacon and cream cheese bagel with no egg. I got a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel. It was not the breakfast we had anticipated. We had heard so many great things about this place, so I am going to chalk our not so great experience up to an off day. My bagel had a good taste and the staff hustling so three stars instead of two.

Yelp
This place was good and had a breakfast here. I got the grilled cheese and brownie and it was delicious! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Incredible biscuits and sandwiches. The coffee is fresh and tasty. The staff were so kind and helpful. Overall very clean coffee shop with quality local ingredients.

Yelp
Go here. Delicious! We intended to hit up Biscuit Head yet again, but our Airbnb hosts said this is their favorite and wow - it's a gem. We ordered online the night before and had a quick, easy pickup on a Sunday morning. Ate outside at one of the patio tables and enjoyed every bite of the BEC on scallion cheddar biscuit and the farmhouse sandwich. They complemented each other nicely; the farmhouse is sweet from the apple butter mustard (!!) and the biscuit is 100% pure savory deliciousness. Our only regret was not ordering loaves of bread the night before because when we arrived to pick up our order, they had limited bread options in the bakery. I bought a loaf of Jewish rye and French sandwich bread, though! Can't wait to try them.

Lasheika W.

Yelp
Awesome bakery that offers great breakfast and lunch items. I stopped in looking for a lite bite to eat to hold me over until dinner. I received friendly fast service. I didn't order coffee or tea but they have an amazing menu .I will definitely add city bakery to my ashville foodie list
google avatar

Antrone W.

Yelp
Totally fantastic experience!! The layout is logical and the space is immaculate!! The music was so appropriate for the morning!! I highly recommend the Chai+Charger with oat milk!! It will make your day and don't forget all of the delightful homemade bakery goods!! I had a chocolate croissant!! And the staff is top notch!! A jewel of Asheville!!

Yelp
I absolutely love the baguettes from city bakery. Love all the delectable treats and treasures here. Most go to if you live or visit Asheville on holiday.

Philippe C.

Yelp
We went in this "bakery" with the expectation of getting a real bakery made croissant. Well we were very disappointed with the so called croissant which I can tell you are no better than what you can get at any Publix. Most likely made with margarine or oil. No butter taste whatsoever.
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
One word that sums City Bakery up is delicious! Boyfriend and I ordered the farmhouse sandwich, stuffed avocado salad and a cheese danish. Everything that we ordered I would recommend, our favorite was the sandwich. It was filling and tasted great.

Roy S.

Yelp
Food was average. Workers were ok. Not rude but not super welcoming. What's funny is they ask for tip when you have to bus your own tables.
google avatar

Calvin D.

Yelp
A nice place to relax. The interior is warm and comfy, the coffee is great, and pastries are delicious. My wife and I always stop here whenever we're in town.

Yelp
NYC is littered with delis where you can grab a quick 'n dirty breakfast sandwich on the go. For some reason, I thought this place would be like the Southern equivalent of that, with a tad more leisurely service and biscuits standing in for bagels and rolls. Let's just say, I was sort of right: You see, when we arrived here, at about 10:30 ish am on the Monday of a holiday weekend, the kitchen was clearly in the weeds. So much so that the counter person warned us our food could "take awhile." She wasn't wrong. We waited. And waited. And waited. At a neighboring table, I couldn't help but overhear a gentleman muttering curse words under his breath 'cause his order had yet to arrive. But then, a half-hour later, just as I was about to give up all hope, our food showed up. And you know what? It was worth all the toe-tapping and inner Edvard Munch-summoning silent screams I'd indulged in to while away the time. Cheddar-Scallion Biscuit that comprised my sandwich was delicious! Plus overall, I enjoyed the filling I'd chosen, which consisted of Veggie (spinach, tomato, cheese and red onion), and an added over easy egg for an additional buck. There was, I'll concede, a bit too much slivered red onion and this is coming from a raw onion fan. Other than that, though, I'd wait for one of these all over again. Hubby wound up getting the same thing, and the kid went with Avocado Toast. For $2.99!!! Okay, so the mashed avocado was a bit discolored, but nothing we haven't seen and eaten before at home. Did I mention this was $2.99??? This place is clearly no slouch in the breakfast pastries department either, since the Sticky Bun we'd also ordered was lovely. Bottom line: If you're in a rush, you may want to think twice about heading here. But if you've got the time, c'mon down! Food is great and reasonably priced. I believe this spot is an Asheville staple and I can see why. ps As I skimmed the online menu, I spotted a Bagel offering. Who'd've thunk it? Though it's the Cheddar-Scallion Biscuits all the way for me!:)

Yelp
This is my new local obsession. I prefer the Charlotte St. location as it is small and cozy. The staff is quite friendly and accommodating (usually). They have a super fresh menu. The salads are banging! Especially the Stuffed Avocado Salad. Mixed greens, sprouts, Avocado, chicken salad with a jalapeño goat cheese vinaigrette! Yummmmmmm. There are also fresh baked breads. On Saturday they made a rosemary potato bread that is to die for. SERIOUSLYYYY! Their sourdough sandwich bread is freaking good. And they use no preservatives! Oh, did i mention that they have coffee and espresso? Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this bakery and coffee shop! Delicious cinnamon rolls and caramel rolls served. Seems to be plenty of seating each time we have been there. A few outside tables, but they are usually taken. Nice environment.
google avatar

Lan S.

Yelp
We buy City Bakery bread whenever we can -- at this or the Biltmore location or at Ingles. We especially like the sliced whole wheat loaf and their French breads. The North Asheville location on Charlotte Street has handy parking beside the bakery, and inside the atmosphere is comfortable. There are two large rooms where you can sit at tables and enjoy coffee, a snack or a light breakfast or lunch (there's wi-fi) or you can take out. There are also a few stuffed sofas and chairs. The second room in the evening becomes part of the dining room for the Bone and Broth next door. Service is friendly and fairly quick. Prices for baked goods are a bit on the high side, but you are paying for premium quality. On this visit.one of the restrooms (they are both multi-gender) was clean and neat, but the other wasn't -- must have been an accident.

Yelp
City Bakery is a long time favorite of mine. I feel like it needs no introduction because it is such a staple in town. As long as I've lived in Asheville, I've had the pleasure of living in the north side of town where City Bakery is all too convenient to pop into. You walk in and order at the counter, for food, coffee, or if you are just picking up bread. (which you probably should be) All the sweets are right in front of you as you wait, which is dangerous because you might not have come in for a double chocolate cookie, but you are probably leaving with one after eyeing it down. Side note, they have perfected the cookie. Every one I've had here is slightly crunchy around the side and chewy in the middle. As far as coffee goes, they serve Black Mountain's Dynamite Roasters (one of my faves) and it is smooth and delicious coffee. Their cold brew is some of the best in town, I think. You don't need a drop of sweetness or creamer in it. It's so tasty on its own! The food is excellent! Great sandwiches made on their house made bread with quality ingredients and really fair prices. The salad selection is fab with my favorite being the stuffed avo chicken salad - salad (there is chicken salad on top of a salad...how many more times can I say salad in this paragraph...) They have bagels, biscuits and breakfast sandwiches. Soups and quiche galore! They share an extra dining area with their neighbor Bone and Broth so City Bakery gets it during the day and Bone and Broth at night. What a great system! It used to be cut throat getting a table during lunch hour, but that is no longer the case. Plenty of room for all. The huge parking lot makes this a well rounded, easy breasy breakfast or lunch gathering spot. Take out is also an easy option here. Just order about 15-20 minutes ahead of when you'd like to eat. Enjoy!

Yelp
On birthday cakes.... I've been to three toddler bday parties. Their cakes are not cheap but they are a hit!!! Simply amazing.

Yelp
I had been getting requests for a Mommy/son date for a few days so we chose City Bakery to escape to while his brothers stayed home. We picked peak time to be there because we waited at least 20 minutes in the very long line. Long lines are good things, right? In this case, yes... very much so. My little man and I ordered a loaf of bread (easy sliced pizza for dinner that night) cinnamon roll, a feta spinach croissant and a chocolate croissant with a iced latte. We found a spot and then moved to the window seat a few minutes later. So pretty to have a nice breakfast while watching the cars go by. The cinnamon rolls are HUGE and my guy ate the. Entire. Thing. Himself! I had just a few bites from him and it was amazing. No wonder he cleaned his plate. My spinach feta croissant was good but would have been better heated up. I assumed baked good such as those would be heated up automatically - maybe not? Next time I'll be sure to request a bit of a toasting. I didn't finish the chocolate croissant there. A mixture of being full from the Spinach/Feta and not wanting to waste this beautiful baked good while it was cold. So I took it home and ate it the next day, after a good turn in the toaster oven. Just as good the day after. Very good for special treats with my little men.

Yelp
Bangin pastries and breakfast sandwiches? What more could you possibly want? Let's be real now. No, okay, you probably want bangin coffee too, don't you? Well, it's good. But it's not what I'd write home about. The cheese danish now... I'd pull out my calligraphy pens to write about that beauty. Because cheese danish. CHEESE DANISH. I'm sorry. So I had some kind of spinach breakfast sammich and it was pretty spectacular too. The biscuit is delightful. Nice and Southern: fluffy, flaky, fine...fantastic. And a bit cheesy, but not too silly. ;) kidding. Apparently the cinnamon buns are even better than the cheese danish. So says my bff from college who still lives in Asheville. He wouldn't share. And I wouldn't get the buns over the danish. But we're still pals, and maybe you has cash monies to get both. Porque no los dos?! Get both. Hit me up. Let me know how badly I missed out... then I can stop in next time I'm in town to feed my soul...via my taste buds...guess this is why I'm a chubster. Okay. If you made it this far, I'll be helpful. There's plenty of seating--a room to the side with more. The coffee is good, breakfast is great. Location is perfect: only a few minutes from downtown. Maybe not a ton of parking, but quite a bit of street parking. It's decently priced, but I wouldn't go so far as cheap... I think we spent $30 with three people? We all had coffee/oj, breakfast sandwiches, and two separate pastries. Food comes quickly and the people are great. Get a spot by the window. You'll love it.

Yelp
Fantastic place for breakfast... everything was fresh and well prepared... breakfast sandwiches were excellent... I highly recommend the torta...coffees were perfectly prepared!

Yelp
Prob the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I got the country sausage (I think). Bread is homemade and the apple butter on it was delicious! Their coffee was dynamite which is always a win for me!
