I came across this bakery when staying in town for a work event. I want to bring some local treats into a meeting and this place was amazing! They had such a great assortment, they were the most accommodating too. I am so happy to have stumbled across this place. If I am ever back in the area, I will be back.

Google
We came on 30 mins before closing, the woman who attended us was super nice. She offered us a sample cookie in comparison to another one we originally wanted. She also gave us some good recommendations and everything tasted amazing! We will be coming back, thank you!

Just bought some pan dulce from the City Bakery on Tuesday September 28, 2021. I haven't had pan dulce in a long time. They have delicious pastries. This is the only place you can get pan dulce in San Marcos, Tx. If you haven't gone by the City Bakery. They also sell homemade tortillas. If you hadn't stopped by to get some pan dulce. You need to go before they run out. Lol!! 🤣

Google
This is the cutest little spot. The cookies are DELICIOUS and fresh. The woman working was super friendly and helpful because I was unsure what to get. The prices were honestly a little unbelievable! Such a good deal. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in San Marcos!

Google
Was really looking forward to this stop. I never ever go to chain bakeries! City bakery was somewhat disappointing with their stale banuelos, or at least the oil they were cooked in needs to be fresh! --> But the strawberry & cream pastry was very good 💝

Debra L.

Google
The pastries were on point! I had been looking for a local panaderia and finally found this place. There are no tables to eat because it's not a restaurant. I bought empanadas, deditos(finger cookies), conchas and churros. All very tasty!

Rain C.

Google
Very friendly service and great brownies. They allowed me to sit in the bakery while I waited over an hour for the game shop next door to open. Also offer tamales on weekends so you BET I'll be back on Saturdays.

Google
Just pd $10 on eight pieces of pan dulce, guess next time Im baking a cake. Picture is missing one pineapple empanada.

Yelp
My husband and I went in here on our way to Austin to see my father and my grandfather in Austin for Father's Day today, the women up front was so sweet and helpful and even gave us a sample of a really tasty cookie!! Price is really nice we got about 16 cookies and 5 or 6 brownies for $30. We love small businesses and this one was amazing 100% recommend stopping by! We will be back !!

Yelp
I came in here on a whim and I had an absolutely wonderful experience! I met the owner, Susan, and she was very kind and explained every type of pastry they had since it was my first time. She gave me a sample of her favorite cookie and a sample of the flan she and her friend are selling for a limited time The flan was absolutely phenomenal with the perfect amount of sweetness and a soft, creamy texture. The cookie I sampled had an amazing consistency and not overly sweet, just perfect for coffee! Neither tasted stale or old either. She told me they sell fresh tortillas every morning, only $4 for a pack, and another customer told me how delicious they are so I'll be back to try it out. I bought 3 cookies and 3 pastries that came out to $8! An amazing price these days so not sure why other reviews think it's overpriced. I definitely recommend checking it out

Yelp
My parents used to bring me here as a little kid when visiting my grandparents. It was always a good stop on the way out of town as we lived in the country and didn't have treats like these anywhere close. I came here a week ago for a family member's funeral, and rediscovering this treasure on the way out of town was what I needed. The place maintains its old school charm and was stocked with all sorts of cookies, cakes, and uniquely Mexican desserts. I opted for some pink, yellow, and brown sugar cookies that were my favorites growing up. The conchas here looked tasty, and the bakery was also presenting a wide variety of dessert empanadas. The service was warm and friendly, and you can tell the business stays true to its roots. The exterior is very unassuming, but prepare yourself when you walk in to be blasted by warmth and good smells. The cookies I got were as delicious as I remember, if not more. I may or may not have teared up in the car as the taste of my cookies evoked a myriad of memories. Thank you, City Bakery.

Yelp
Walking in you're blasted with strong Fabuloso smell..which is alright if the floors are clean. But when I took one bite of the pan de polvo it had a distinct flavor: FABULOSO! Gross. Threw away a bag of pan that cost $6 for a few items. The strawberry cream cheese bar was hard and old too. And also had the taste. Took a bite of empanada?? Same taste. The wrapped concha even tasted like it & it was dry. Come on guys..Someone else posted the same review. Listen to your customers & try to tone down the fabuloso and work on the taste/quality of the pan. If it's used to clean the counters that's probably how it's being soaked into the dough if I had to guess. That could make people sick for real.

Yelp
Very affordable and delicious with lots of variety! I will definitely be coming back soon

Yelp
walking into this place, my husband asked if we should turn around almost immediately, aesthetically it's not welcoming or friendly. I told him let's give it a chance and I got the two most appetizing things which were two angel food cake flavors, one with custard and one with strawberry jam and coconut, I picked these two because they didn't look as dry as the rest of the treats there. Nope, still dry. The flavor was very artificial tasting. After a couple bites we threw them away. We also tried one of their powdered sugar brownies. It was horribly dry. The look of the place needs some TLC but it's not gonna do well when the food is very unsatisfactory.

Yelp
I loved the level of customer service I received. However, the place mainly consisted of Mexican pastries which I'm not a fan of. I will say that both the cookies and the empanadas I had were pretty good.

Emilía F.

Yelp
Second time I like the empanadas but they had a distinct flavor. Figured out they taste like fabuloso the cleaning agent.

Yelp
got a chocolate muffin and it was super good! the girl helping me out was super sweet!

Yelp
It sad this place went downhill, considering that I really used to love this place, they are never open at seven like their sign says, and when you enter the establishment the food that is out looks like it was made yesterday, it's unfortunate but this is the way most small businesses are becoming, overpriced and cheap quality

Yelp
To quote the close of my favorite Rufus Wainwright song, "please be kind if I'm a mess." These beauties caught my eye first so ended, by cruel fate, in the bottom of the to-go bag and took a beating. They were, I promise, fresh as Cate Blanchett a moment ago in the display case with perfectly symmetrically piped custard. When I first saw them and cried "what's THAT?!" The clerk kindly explained "kind of an inverted cupcake with Bavarian creme filling and strawberry and coconut on the outside." I love my town. I asked for two. And then two strawberry empanadas afterwards, hence the noticeably squashed look :( I swear they still taste really good, but you won't know 'til you go try and see what tempts you.

Yelp
Love the apple fritterssome of the cookies are good but many are just plain, like eating dense bread with a bit of sugar....

Yelp
Walk in and the smell is amazing. Great service and even better treats. We will be back.

Yelp
As other reviewers have noted, the outside of the building is maybe on the unsightly side? But keep in mind it's a bakery...and all that matters is to me is the smell that hits me when I open the door and the abundance of baked goods. We went a little crazy on our first visit. We ordered churros, cake cups(strawberry and vanilla filling), pineapple empanadas, a slice of spice cake, and a dozen tamales. What I love about mexican baked goods is that most of it is not sickeningly sweet and this place is no exception. My favorite was the cake cup, oh my what a yummy little creation. It's a soft spongy cake cup with a vanilla cream filling inside! Prices are very reasonable and staff is friendly.

Yelp
My husband and I were having a sweets craving and decided to visit the bakery with our daughter. We chose several sweets and all were delicious. My favorite was the lemon creme filled cupcake. It was divine. The service and prices were great. I love their hours. We will be back for sure.

Kimberly G.

Yelp
Went here as I was craving something sweet, and decided to try something new. I went in and felt welcome the moment I walked in the door. The lady who assisted me was super sweet and helpful. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
I won't lie: It took us a year to build up the nerve to walk into this small panderia on S. Guadalupe, across from the Greyhound station. It's a modest little place plunked between a live music club and a string of auto parts stores. On our first few drive-bys, we wondered if it was even in business. And we never had much of an urge to find out, because Casa Maria, a fancier San Marcos panderia festooned with a fetching neon sign, was just a couple blocks further down. But great things come to those who walk into weary-looking Mexican bakeries in San Marcos. And once you step inside this one, you'll never want to leave. City Bakery creates excellent and reliable pastries, pies and cookies at prices so low that you'll wonder if you'd crossed the border without realizing it. Many items are traditional Mexican fare -- those frosted rolls and pink rabbit ears you see in all panderias -- but be sure to try the hefty individual pecan or apple pies, large enough to share with your favorite fellow pie lover. They are delicious. Other stand-outs include the cinnamon twist donuts -- just like the kind you find at Dunkin, but better!-- and slightly sweet pecan shortbread cookies. Just writing this makes me want to head on down there. If you're curious about what's in an item, just ask the always-friendly counter staff. Too good to be true? Wait...it gets better. City Bakery is open 6 am to 9 pm every day except Tuesday. And yes, we've been known to drop by just before closing to wallow in the decadent thrill of buying a donut or pie (or both....don't you judge us!) with dinner still in our stomachs. If heaven is anything like City Bakery, call me saved and pass the collection plate. I can think of worse places to spend eternity.

Yelp
Been living here for over a year and somehow missed this great spot for way too long. I finally went by this morning and was overwhelmed with the tasty selection. The woman that helped me pick out $5 worth of goodies was so sweet and welcoming. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. Only $5?? Uh, yeah! 2 large glazed donuts, 3 polvorones rosas, 1 decorative chocolate cupcake, 1 lemon curd empanada all for the small price of $5.50. Absolute gem in San Marcos. I'll certainly keep coming back.

Yelp
Pretty tasty place to grab some dessert after dinner at Garcia's across the street. Honestly though, the homemade tortillas they make to sell by the dozen are much better than the sweets.
google avatar

Pasha C.

Yelp
The cookies are fantastic! Great prices and always a good selection. I have a hard time leaving without a huge bag filled with cookies whenever I leave here. The powdered sugar covered ones are my favorite.

Yelp
I decided to give this place a second try and again I left disappointed. The reviews on Yelp convinced me that perhaps my initial visit was just bad luck but my second visit mirrored my first. Their baked goods are days old and hard. Their minimum purchase amount is $5.00, I guess that's ok if you are feeding a family but too much to ask when you're single. I chuckled when I saw their muffins wrapped in sandwich bags. The muffins are from Sam's. My better half buys them every week for the kids. 3 items totaled $6.00 (1 pig, 1 empanada, 1 cake). HEB sells them ALOT cheaper and are fresh.

Yelp
Good selection of various pastries. Note: City Bakery is now on S. LBJ, opposite of Garcia's.

Yelp
Nicest lady behind the counter. The parking lot seemed busy and I had trouble finding where to park but apparently it's the businesses next door. Tastiest pan dulce (conchas) I bought every color for a Cinco de Mayo get together. So tasty. I also bought two bunuelos and O.M.G. Were they crunchy and delicious!!! I will definitely be returning to get my sweet tooth fix at this place.

T P.

Yelp
I had a very rude experience there. I purchased a large quantity of items for a family graduation party today. The lady behind the counter was rude. She questioned me about my purchases, and when I asked to ring up my items in cash and credit card - she complained she already rung it up (she had only added it on a calculator) and it needed to be credit. She acted like I was inconveniencing her. I will never go back here again, and will be getting my items elsewhere from someone with better customer service. Also - the churro is stale.

Mary M.

Yelp
Cookies are pretty dry and not very sweet, but they're cheap. The cupcakes are store bought and extremely sweet. But, it's super cheap.

Yelp
San marcos favorite. Should be on everyone list, for the first place, to get homemade tortillas. Some of the local restaurants do the same. Amazing pastries, with even better prices! Walk in with 5 dollars....and you could walk out with bag load of a variety of good eats and possibly some change. Got a sweet tooth? Now you know!

Yelp
Saw the positive reviews and thought we'd take a stab at the place. Plenty to choose from and very inexpensive! Empanadas were good except the sweet potato one, didn't care for the taste. They did have some sort of sweet potato cake that incredible! Made me mad that we only bought one.

Ted R.

Yelp
This place has been around for years, good sweets but the employee today were very irritated and just rude. Went in with my parents around noonish and there was a customer being waited on. Well as we were coming in and another behind us she was like really is it ever going to slow down, can I get a break. Then worker yells over to whom ever was waiting on her and says I well I may not make it I'm the only working and seem to get a break. Worker was well what do you want. Smh unacceptable

Yelp
My mom and I went there and we got a custered filled roll pastry, two pecan pies, three wedding cake cookies, and carrot cake I realy liked the carrot cake what would have made it better was if it didn't have raisins in it and if they used different frosting cuz what they used was gummy. Very bad don't go here

Yelp
came in on Easter Sunday and got some snacks for our ride back home... Really great place, good cookies and baked goods... The lady working was super friendly too!

Yelp
The City Bakery is a revelation. I passed by this very small, makeshift, panaderia several times over the last year and only recently stopped in. As you walk in the door the smell of baked sweets and various pastries fill your nostrils. Then your eyes are in a constant motion, trying to swiftly examine all the options behind the glass. There are plenty of Mexican dessert classics like pan dulce, empanadas, and pan de polvo, as well as American favorites such as sugar cookies with royal icing, chocolate dough nuts with Bavarian cream, long johns, bear claws, apple turnovers, frosted cupcakes with sprinkles, pies, muffins, and carrot cake. I have had the privilege of trying most of these sweets and they are fantastic, often warm and very fresh. Almost everything is homemade. The staff is also very friendly and I always leave with the feeling that they appreciated my business. As if this was not enough, this bakery is especially affordable. $3.19 can go a long way in here. Usually, about 6 pastries. As if price, taste, good service and a diverse pastry menu weren't enough, they also sell homemade tortillas and pork tamales. The pork tamales are so delicious! A perfect blend of savory spices and tender pork meat, and always very fresh. A doz. is about $8 and is well worth it for a fresh and tasty breakfast treat. I have not yet tried the tortillas but I hear many good things about them. Whether it is for the sweets or the tamales, the City Bakery is where the good stuff is, hands down.

Sheilah B.

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim going to the bank with my spouse. We had both been looking for a good bakery in town but not very actively. We splurged and everything was fantastic! I will be going here often, prices are more than reasonable, everything was delicious and the perfect flavor and texture. The gentleman that helped us was very polite when we inquired about what some of the products contained.

Vilma L.

Yelp
While everything looks very tasty and tempting I was disappointed that the cupcake and cuernito I bought were hard, stale, and lacking in much flavor. I did think the tamales were very good and will buy again.

Patty S.

Yelp
came here for the first time and I admit I think I fell in love. Everything from the artwork in side to the employees working. I will most likely come here twice a week at the least. absolutely delicious bakery and the drinks are good also.

Theresa D.

Yelp
I've visited a few times and the bakery seems poorly managed. Some of the baked goods look like they bought them from stores and just sell them there. Some of the stuff doesn't even seem freshly baked. Poor service as well, just horrible.

Elbo W.

Yelp
this panaderia has fantastic baked goods. here are some items i recommend: danishes, churros, pan dulce, apple fritters, gingerbread pigs, little personal pies, cup cakes...they do sell tamales but i never tried them. really inexpensive prices for great mexican baked good
