"A (Handmade) Bird in the Hand Brother-sister duo Andy and Emily Linn opened City Bird, a studio and gallery located in Midtown Detroit, to house their line of handmade Detroit- and Great Lakes–themed housewares, apparel, accessories, and objects. The work of more than 200 other local Detroit designers also packs the shop shelves. When you stop in, be sure to pick up the siblings' printed guide to their city, "Belle Isle to 8 Mile: An Insider's Guide to Detroit," which features more than 700 different attractions, restaurants, and areas of interest throughout the Motor City."

Run/managed by lovely people. People who are helpful and friendly. They have really good quality items/articles in their shop. Found some meaningful fridge magnets that connect the Detroit/Michigan community. Loved the designs. Loved the quality. Appropriately priced. Definitely recommended for someone who collects souvenirs.

Google
I LOVE this place. I’ve been wanting to check it out for a while now but never in the area. I’m so glad we made the trip today. Such a cute shop with all sorts of fun artsy things and a lot of Detroit merch.

Google
City Bird is an adorable place to shop local for Detroit inspired & made gifts. There’s a nice variety of Detroit shirts and sweatshirts. I bought a sweatshirt and I’m absolutely impressed by how soft and comfy it is. (I might come back for another!) I also got a few jewelry pieces at a good price!

Very nice and clean gift shop.

Google
Fun store that is perfect for getting all things Michigan. Cool small neighborhood too!

Google
Cute little shop with all kinds of Michigan artisanal products. Right in the heart of the Cass corridor. So much to do in this little neighborhood. Definitely worth an afternoon visit. Great gifts, something for everyone.

I bought an item for a birthday present. Very unique store with plenty of Michigan related merchandise. Very cute store. (And across the street from Carhartt 👍🏻)

Yelp
Super cute place to shop. They have a wide variety of items to satisfy any mood. Michigan & Detroit things. They also have Detroit Rose candles!

Yelp
Cute place to shop for the unusual person in your life even if that is you. Special items for special people and stuff tourist for those who visit our wonderful city. Card selection is full of cards for those who send sweet words with some for us smart asses. If you send one, probably no one else will send the same one. Prices are what you expect for the block. Glad I visited since I have wanted to since I read about it when it opened.

Yelp
I was really hoping to find some simplistic detroit crewnecks here as a souvenir but not much luck. It must be not a great season to sell sweatshirts. The few they had weren't really my cup of tea. We did get some small magnets which were reasonable and the perfect takeaway. The neighborhood was pretty nice and parking was easy (though metered fyi) The staff were friendly but not overly involved/hovering which I love Overall a VERY cute shop and great small business to support for souvenirs or Detroit gifts

Yelp
Stopped in here this past week while in Midtown for a Yelp Elite experience at Nest. I had definitely heard of City Bird before but never been able to drop by till now. They had a lot of very cute Michigan-specific things - if you have any Michigan ex-pat friends, they'd love these, or anyone who loves Michigan in general. They also had other things such as homeware, jewelry, etc. Unfortunately they were closing at 7pm and we arrived around 645pm but I'd like to drop by another time to check it out a bit more.

Yelp
This is such an adorable shop to look around in. They have these cute soaps when you walk in that smell amazing. We also saw tons of candles. They have the crystal ones and quite a lot of Michigan scents. They had a lot of sale sections to look through and we found a reslly awesome crystal candle. They also had these cool coasters that had Michigan themes on them. We saw some jewelry as well and knitted toys for children. All around its an adorable shop to look through and possibly buy a unique home made gift for a friend or family member.

Yelp
In a brick and brutalist style condo and retail building, limited street pay parking, nearby pay lot. A large room crammed full of Detroit and area attractions themed gifts, from books to highball glasses to tees. Everything was really pricey, and limited selection--in particular the sizing for the tees. And the building was hard to get into, non standard steps and a trip hazard means the mobility impaired should avoid.

Yelp
City Bird is the perfect place to grab gifts for yourself and others! It is my go-to spot for occasion cards and stationary. I also appreciate their locally made items and stylish Michigan-themed accessories. Be sure to check out their sister store, Nest, for home decor!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
This store is cards & stationary heaven and really was the jumping off point in me deciding to begin collecting a bunch of Michigan prints to display in my home. I love that they are an amalgam of so many wonderful local vendors & they are such a cohesive moment that it makes me want to cry. I love this place so much. City Bird has so much to offer. You will surely find cards to suit any situation you might ever have to give a card in and gives you so many options in the way of aesthetic Michigan-themed decor, clothing, books, etc. items as well to fill your home & to pair with your thoughtful card to your friends & family. Don't forget to stop by next door to their sister store, Nest, while you're in Cass Corridor for additional cuteness & cohesiveness.

Yelp
was in town for family and wanted to gift my Houston coworkers uniquely Detroit gifts. This was the perfect place to come! They have such a great selection of items to choose from and at such fair prices. I went to a few other stores (Detroit themed shops) and none of them compared. If you are in the market for Detroit or Michigan themed gifts or apparel, stop in! It will definitely be worth your time and $$! And the shopkeepers were so friendly and welcoming! 10/10!

Jan L.

Yelp
Love shopping here! And will keep coming back! City Bird has so much merchandise I could spend a whole day here. Really hip and cool items for oneself or for gifts. The Detroit themed items are awesome. Great prices and great service.

Kelly P.

Yelp
There is nothing not to love about this midtown staple. It's small, but that doesn't deter City Bird from carrying a wonderful variety of very cool, well designed, and frequently handmade items from local artists as well as artisans from across the country, as well thoughtful designers. The staff is friendly and helpful, and you will no doubt be tempted by something here--I always am.

Yelp
I stopped in last week for the Yelp event chocolate pick-up and was delighted by what I found. Importantly, I subsequently brought my girlfriend back here for another visit, which I'll limit this review to. Staff are super nice and business is brisk in this spot. People are constantly in and out - lots of customers in here. A really nice assortment of fun and unique gifts. Cards, mugs, socks, clothing, jewelry, and everything in between. Super fun spot. I picked up some bags of the chocolate I was introduced to through the Yelp event and some of the chocolate covered Michigummies (omg). This will definitely be a regular stop - particularly for fun and unique cards for every occasion!
google avatar

Yelp
The absolute best souvenir shop in Detroit (and maybe Michigan too)! I wanted to buy everything there. Such a great selection. A must-visit place for locals and visitors alike.
google avatar

Jon F.

Yelp
This is a neat store in a really cool little block of a neighborhood that has some other great stores, and man, was it busy! I was there for a yelp event but I had to go back 3 times to actually get to the counter. That's nothing on the store, it's got a lot of great items that are very much Detroit and Michigan, including cool posters and a whole wall of cards. If there's anything bad about it, it's not a big store so if you're there on the weekend be prepared for crowds. Otherwise if you're looking for nick knacks and gifts, it is worth a stop.
google avatar

Kaela K.

Yelp
I stopped in here the other day while in the area. I was so pleased to find a wall of about 500 cards by different illustrators and designers. They had unique selections for every occasion - which can be hard to find at larger chain stores. I am HUGE on getting beautifully illustrated cards for friends and family, so I definitely will come here for all of those moments. Additionally, their accessories were beautiful. Also, they had a section of cute old timey gifts for children, as well as Detroit and Michigan themed apparel for babies and little ones.
google avatar

Carol J.

Yelp
I visited this store for the first time, and I am thoroughly impressed, store smells really good when you walk in, they have a wide selection of great gift ideas if you looking to get a loved one a gift and know they like authentic stuff from Michigan. There is cute toy section for the little ones, a little something for every taste, I'm very picky but I will be back. If you searching for a souvenir to take back home or send to a loved one out of town, hey Christmas is approaching I think this nice little shop in the midtown area, easy to find the

Yelp
City Bird has the most wonderful selection of homes goods, gifts, paper, accessories, apparel and so much more. ⁣ ⁣ If you find yourself in Detroit, we absolutely recommend stopping by and seeing what they have to offer!

Yelp
City Bird continues to be my favorite store in Detroit. And since I've written my last review, they've expanded and packed more amazing stuff in the shop. Anytime I need a unique gift, or want to treat myself to something amazing, I come here. Stationary, Detroit branded clothing, greeting cards, jewelry, kids stuff, home decor, party supplies and more can all be found here. It's easy to find something for everyone! And the prices are incredibly affordable, too. I've recently been redoing some of the decor in our house and I was looking for some new prints to hang. First place I went? City Bird! And I got 4 new beauties to hang up in our bedroom, a few floral prints and a beautiful butterfly print (a mix of local artists and Rifle Paper). And while I specifically went in just for the prints, I couldn't help but dig through everything else. It took everything I had not to add a basket of other goodies to my purchase, but I had to be financially responsible. Ha! But next time I'm in the market for a little treat myself day, I know exactly where I'm going! Keep up the amazing work, CB!

Yelp
City Bird is adorable and I love their sense of style when it comes to displays - the shop when it's decorated for the holiday season is downright magical to walk into. Kind of reminds me of when you were a kid and got to briefly walk into the FANCY toy store, only you're allowed to actually touch nearly everything and smell it or pick it up and take a look. They have a consistently great stationary selection, with some Japanese brands that are a little harder to find, and tons of interesting smelling candles. I usually shop for gifts here because if I need to I can reliably find a really cool and thoughtful gift that's not going to fully bankrupt me, but I also know that I could find something higher end as well. They have a great price and item range that suits pretty much anyone I can think of, which is not a given for many new Detroit boutiques. (Lookin' at you, purposely unnamed Midtown stores that charge you 25 dollars for a keychain. Oof.) Check out their bitters/mixers/jams selection, they always have amazing new brands and flavors to look out for!

Yelp
City Bird is a fun place to stop for a great meal. Large portions so be prepared to share or take some home with you
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
This is exactly the kind of shops Detroit needs more of. Lots of fun stuff to choose from and the staff are so friendly! Can't wait to return!
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Cute little shop with lots of unique items and friendly staff. My finds that day were a super soft Detroit tee, handmade earrings, and some lovely stationary. Stop in!

Avery A.

Yelp
Super cute place to shop! Overpriced but cute with fun local goods. Although it's an expensive store, the staff is chill.
google avatar

Yelp
City Bird was a cute shop we decided to visit while bumming around on a cold Saturday afternoon. The store is small and got cramped pretty quickly. I enjoyed the designs of a lot of the things City Bird sells but I can't get behind the prices. Tee-shirts were almost all priced more than $24. Tiny plastic Michigan-shaped charms on cheap nickel chains were $20. Small soy candles were $32. Just seemed to be too much money for what you get. I can appreciate paying more for local goods but some stuff was just ridiculous. I also feel dedicating an entire store wall to $5 greeting cards is a waste of valuable space, but that's just me. I didn't end up buying anything but can definitely see the appeal in this shop. It's worth a visit but do expect to open your wallet if you find something you love.
google avatar

Autumn M.

Yelp
City Bird is such a great find. Located in the heart of Midtown, it is the perfect place to drop in and grab a gift for the holiday season. The shop features an unparalleled selection of witty greeting cards, fridge magnets, artisanal soaps, and Michigan centric products. Has a strict and safe capacity limit due to COVID-19, so I'd recommend stopping in during off peak hours to avoid a wait. City Bird truly has something for everyone. Can't wait to continue my holiday shopping here!

Yelp
This cute gift/home goods store is warm and inviting, one of a kind and perfect for just about any occasion. No matter if you're picking up a random item for your home, for yourself or even for someone else, you WILL find something and it will blow your mind. A lot of the items in this store are local Michigan made products and have Detroit or the Mitten incorporated into them. So this is the place to go for all your "Detroit" branded gear and for a really good price too. I notice some smaller shops have very pricey items but not here. I think everything is priced pretty reasonable. So if you don't have a crazy amount to spend, you can still find a special gift without going broke. The even sell Birthday cards, so this is definitely a one stop shop! I did some Christmas shopping here last year and I was very pleased with my gifts! I out did myself, I think, and got my mom the cutest tin recipe box, that came with recipe cards and dividers. My mom cooks a lot and she is the absolute best at it, so it was special to give her something that she can fill with recipes and memories and one day give back to me :) They had three different kinds and I went with the tan floral one, and she loves it. I also got my papa a Detroit sweatshirt with the OG (scary) tiger on it, which he really likes since he remembers when that was the Tigers' logo. With all the Detroit/Michigan items here I'm inspired to make my friend a Detroit care package since she moved out of state and misses Detroit dearly. And! I know exactly where to go to get everything too!
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Fantastic customer service on my online order! Above and beyond what I would expect. Kimberly was a total rockstar in making sure I got what I wanted. Great gift ideas and unique items that bring a little of Michigan and Detroit to Tennessee. Will absolutely be ordering more and stopping in the store next time I get a visit back home!
google avatar

Katrina M.

Yelp
Love this store! So cute!! A good store for buying souvenirs/ gifts. Cute little things here and there. My only problem was there wasn't any ramp to get in the store. I have a 5 month old daughter and we bring the stroller wherever we travel. So we had to lift the stroller to get into the store. Plus it was cold out so we're not just gonna leave it outside hahaha
google avatar

Owen R.

Yelp
Another great addition to Detroit! Staff was helpful and friendly. Lot of great items, many out of my price range. I like this newer area.
google avatar

Suzzette M.

Yelp
Cutest, coolest shop I've ever been in. Found lots of great things for friends and family now living out of state. Great selection of jewelry, drinkware, cards, candles, and so much more!
google avatar

Meredith E.

Yelp
So you say, I would love a pair of earrings mapped with the city of Detroit... or ice cubes in the shape of Michigan (both peninsulas)... how about a Michigan cutting board? Or a super trendy Detroit T-shirt. Having a staycation? Pop in here for your 'Greetings from Detroit' postcards. This shop has everything Michigan and Detroit. It's fabulous. Plus it's right next to a great home goods store called Nest and 2 breweries.

Yelp
I like City Bird, but wouldn't quite say that I love it. Things I like: * There are definitely a lot of of cool items - glassware, apparel, cards, jewelry, home goods, gifts, accessories, etc. * Most of the stuff seems to be Detroit/Michigan-themed and/or made locally which is cool * Prices are mostly reasonable Things I don't like * It gets uncomfortably cramped pretty easily with just a handful of customers * I feel like too much of the store is given up to novelty greeting cards (I'm SO over this trend) and generic, mass-produced shot glasses, t-shirts, etc. with "Detroit" and a city map printed on it (it's a little boring, unoriginal when I can find the same thing at a gas station or Spencer's type store) Overall, it's a nice shop with plenty to look at, but I'll save my next visit for a weekday so I can avoid the madhouse.
google avatar

Gabi A.

Yelp
Love this place! I've been coming here for years & now that I don't live in Michigan I make sure to stop by when I'm in town. A lot of local boutiques can seem touristy and lame but this place is NOT like that. They have great, unique, and COOL Michigan & Detroit themed items and amazing gifts for everyone. Their card selection is unreal; I always stock up when I'm there. Make sure to check out their apparel, they have super cool, high quality sweatshirts & tees for everyone!
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
I had to unfortunately give City Bird a low review today because of my experience with someone who answered the phone. I've frequented this place many times in the past and had a few last minute gifts to purchase Christmas Eve. I called to see if they are opened and either the woman was extremely busy or very unhappy about pulling the holiday shift. Conversation went like this: Me: Ring ring City Bird: City Bird (flat and irritated sounding) Me: hi, how are you? I'm inquiring if you are open today. City Bird: yep Me: umm ok. What are the hours City Bird: something like 5:00 pm Me: thank you very much City Bird: *click* Thanks for spreading the holiday cheer. So unprofessional. Debating about ever frequenting them again even though the merchandise is great.
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
This place was mad cool! Their assortment of stationary is fantastic. And Like Jenni H. said, if you're looking for gift ideas this place will have a ton of accents to make that gift even more unique. From t-shirts to liquor decanters with Detroit logos etched into them, this place is just dope. Perhaps a little pricey but well worth the coin. Totally worth checking out and a nice place to take a date if you're bouncing around midtown on an aimless afternoon.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Oh man I could literally spend every day all day at City Bird. This is my new go to place for gift giving!!! They have so many of the cutest little trinkets and novelty items and the best part? Mostly everything is Detroit themed and/or locally sourced. I seriously wanted to by everything in the store. I bought most of my Christmas gifts for friends and family here last year. I did not think the prices were too unreasonable either. You get what you pay for and this is some great quality stuff! They always have rotating merchandise so whenever you come you can find something new! I follow them on Instagram and they always updated on their most recent products. Its right next to Motor City Brewing Works so grab some pizza and a beer then walk next door when you're done to do some shopping! I can't think of a better day than that!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
I lurve Detroit. I lurve City Bird. It's not cheep cheep (BIRD REFERENCE) but it's great quality stuff, showcasing artisans and also local (Michigan, if not Detroit) goods in particular. You can nab some larger items (frames, Tshirts, glasses, candles) as well as smaller (cards, soap, pencils). Things range from pricey (jewelry) to pop-in no-consideration affordable (bumper stickers). Great store, great staff (I have not experienced any of the attitude other reviewers have mentioned). All gifts I've purchased here have been extremely well-received. The range of cards is especially amazing (see: a card celebrating single parents! Same-sex wedding cards!). Yelp note: HEY-OH MIDTOWN. This whole Canfield Street stretch is bombdotcom!
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
The absolute sweetest little store with the best items for gifts and Detroit souvenirs. I always go in here to get cards for special occasions.
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
Ordered nine different items from here, sight unseen. Each item received was of top quality. First time customer and will definitely return. Also, they were out of one item I ordered, and customer service and communication were excellent. Thank you City Bird!
google avatar

Jeremy K.

Yelp
First of all this store is amazing. Then why 2 stars? Let me tell you about the City Bird Employee and the horrible bad day she must have been having. I have lived in Chicago for 20 years and have dealt with the most annoying hipsters on the planet for over two decades, but never in my life have I met a more pissy angst ridden shop employee than the one who was working this past Sunday. If someone is dropping 150 dollars plus in the store you work at, you may not want to sigh loudly when they ask for a gift bag. It was for my dad for father's day, so I apologize for having the audacity to ask for a gift bag. An old friend of mine has merch here, and he assured me the owners are very nice people. I would suggest you lose the angsty staff or you are going to lose business.
google avatar

jon s.

Yelp
This place is great! I did a lot of holiday shopping here and found something for everyone on my list. I went back last weekend and I found the perfect gift for a friend's birthday. The layout is cool, the staff was really helpful and many of the goods are one of a kind and made right here in the mighty mitten. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Aurore L.

Yelp
Cute little store, Detroit oriented. I might have fallen in love with the whiskey tumblers featuring every one of its 55 neighborhoods.....you will never know. Bright, whimsical and reasonably priced, it features everything from clothing, jewelry, soaps and fragrances, decoration items and even a small section of vintage. And cards. Lots of 'em. You are bound to find something you like.
google avatar

Larissa H.

Yelp
I love love love this store and am so incredibly happy that they now have their own location as I've enjoyed City Bird items on Etsy and at other local stores for quite some time now. I've actually made the drive downtown on several occassions now just to go to City Bird. There's something cool about going directly to the source! :) Emily and Andy are incredibly nice and each time I've gone in have been extremely gracious and appreciative of the business. Prices are extremely reasonable and I would highly recommend City Bird for Detroit related gifts!
google avatar

Sarahjeanne J.

Yelp
I remember buying things from City Bird at the DUCF before there was a store. Andy and Emily were adorable and wonderful then, and I could not have been more excited to hear they were opening a store! This is my first stop when shopping for gifts. They seem to always have the perfect thing at the right price, like a cute handmade coffee cup cozy to compliment a gift card to a coffee place, or a metal bird for my eccentric dad. I once accidentally left something behind, and they saved it for me and gave it to me the next time I was in. I hadn't even noticed it was missing!
google avatar

Leah O.

Yelp
Just adorable. Unique, one-of-a-kind, and so positive. The guy working the day I went in was so friendly, we chatted it up for a bit and I told him how I had partially come home to Detroit to visit City Bird. I'd been a huge fan of them on their Etsy page for years and was so extremely happy to see them open up shop. If you love Detroit and want to rep like I do, this is the place for you! All locally owned and/or created jewelry, art, decor, shirts, buttons, etc.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
If you're looking for Detroit trinkets or souvenirs, then this is the spot. Great quality. These items are unique and inspired. They had a great selection of T-shirts and sweatshirts and jewelry. The staff was friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I came here a few weeks ago, when my boyfriend and I were doing a tour of Midtown for his birthday. This store was definitely the highlight of our trip (well, maybe tied with the DIA). First off, they have a ton of Michigan/Detroit inspired home decor items, jewelry, clothing, and other paraphernalia. I found some adorable Great Lakes note cards and Detroit magnets. The jewelry selection is all handmade items that are one of a kind. The woman working said they sell a lot of items from Etsy sellers in the Detroit area or other rustbelt cities. I got a great pair of lace earrings here. They also have a single rack of vintage clothing. However, this is a carefully thought out selection, because the BF was able to find plenty of pieces that he now wears all the time. And the prices were very reasonable. I ended up dropping over $80 here, but it was well worth it. I hope this store does well, because I love it. I hope to come back soon!
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Sweet little Cass Corridor boutique selling unique gifts and vintage clothes, often made by Detroit crafters and artisans. I stop here whenever I'm in Detroit and have a hard time leaving without at least one sweet gift (for me!). What else can I say? The brother-and-sister owners are nice and helpful, the merchandise is sweet, and the shop is in close proximity to other cute shops and good places to eat. Go to there. That is all.
