Just before 1pm on Sunday they were already sold out of some meats our party of 3 wanted. They recommended the jalapeno and cheddar sausage. We all like that type of meat so we all tried it. It must have been spoiled, I took 1 bite it was ruff! The other meats were decent. Left pretty disappointed.

The City Butcher is great at what they do. A bit pricey for BBQ & smoked meats, but tasty & tender. Whole restaurant was very clean & service was quick & helpful. This time through we enjoyed a brisket sandwich which had delicious charred edges and wonderful flavor. The BBQ beans included plenty of chopped meat and spicy peppers. It was hotter than I prefer, but good. We also had pulled/chopped pork serving, jalapeño mac+cheese w/ potato salad, and a smookie (chocolate chip cookie w/ half butter / half beef tallow) which was interesting-may not get that again. But the BBQ, the meats, are always great here & get here earlier than later 'cos once an item is sold out for the day, it's gone. 😝

Went at 1 pm on Thursday afternoon. They were already out of chicken and turkey. I had to make due with a small salad for $9. The salad had spring mix that was very bitter. It had canned tomatoes, canned black beans, corn that was probably canned or frozen and the ranch dressing came in a 1 oz cup that was half filled. It had obviously been made earlier as it came out in less than 5 min. I could not eat it. I tried to get a refund, but the counter woman refused. She argued with me about the corn and lettuce and ignored me. My husband got the sampler of all the meats available. It was served cold. He said it was some of the worst he had ever had. We paid $70 for this atrocity. This is a walk up to the counter and order fast food type place. If you are hoping for a nice place to eat I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Google
City Butcher and Barbecue came highly recommended from a friend. I agree with my friend! Delicious tender burnt ends!! You have to get the baked beans also. They are loaded with chunks of moist cuts as well. I also tried the cheesy jalapeno corn which was an additional highlight. This favorite spot for burnt ends is hidden away in a strip mall. So just plug it in to your GPS and get on down there for yours! They are known to run out. The entrance is on the far right of the store front with the counter and menu board being your first stop. Order and pay, then follow around to the kitchen door with your receipt and wait for your order to come out. This is great food to order and take home as well. The interior is basic wood tables and booths but you're not there to sit and admire the surroundings . . . you're there for some darn good burnt ends! Yes, there's other items on the menu, but why? Staff was pleasant and helpful. This is definitely a repeat experience!

Google
Tasty Bbq served old style. The brisket and pulled pork were amazing. Three types of house bbq sauce and decent sides as well. Bottled beer and fountain drinks available. Looking for straight forward, no fuss, and great taste, this is a great bet.

My wife and I came to Springfield from St. Louis Mo. My wife was reading me the reviews while I was driving. We stopped and the place was inviting. The young lady was very friendly. We got the last of the turkey and a half pound of brisket. When began to eat while we were relaxing. I was like wow! I loved the turkey but I really loved the brisket! It was smoked to perfection. We travel a lot and I must say this place is in the top 5. I also enjoyed the Spicy BBQ Sauce. A nice heat that wasn't too hot.

Google
That duo samich with pork belly and brisket is the bomb. Yes I know some would call it a sandwich but as good as it is that's a samich!! Baked bean were delicious. First time, for us but it won't be the last. We've got to go through the menu!7

Google
Start with the coming into the building. Single line slow process. Don't have any real combo plates so you can sample all. Kinda have to piece your dinner together. Half pound of this third pound of that. I got pound of turkey, 2 half sausages cause wanted to try both flavor, beans and drink. 38 bucks one person. Turkey was very good, sausages was very good. Bean Soso but a very good portion size. Trouble I have with this place is brisket pricing. I believe it's 32 dollars a pound. I'm from Kansas city, and that's higher than ANY PLACE I know in kc. So I didn't try it. Most places 20 to 26 a pound. 32 is ridiculous. Very good food though. And clean place. Prices a bit much especially the brisket.

Yelp
This photo does not do justice to the delicious mouth watering brisket and smoked turkey from city butcher and barbecue. We ordered a half pound of each to go and I had to snap a picture in a hurry before it was all gone. The service is friendly the restaurant is large with booths and tables to sit. We will stop by when ever we are in Springfield Mo.

Yelp
Was in town for our son's college orientation and decided to grab lunch here. I got the brisket sandwich, my wife and son got the pulled pork sandwich. Surprisingly the brisket was lean yet juicy the pulled pork was a little on the dry side but there was plenty of meat. The beans were smokey and sweet, the cheese jalapeño corn was everything but cheesy. It was ok but everything else was really good. I'll have to come back and try burnt ends and ribs some time.
google avatar

Yelp
Super fast service!!! Food tastes great! Pretty clean as well. A little expensive for the portion sizes. Sides aren't included in the entree price.

Yelp
We have been traveling for business to Springfield and other cities in the South for over 30 years. Anytime we go, we look for BBQ. Huntsville, Paducah, Austin, Dallas, Houston, you name it and we look for BBQ. While only being in Springfield for 4 years, City Butcher delivers. 16 hour smoked brisket and pulled pork are wo class. Ribs outstanding. Home made hot links and smoked turkey are some of the best we have tasted in our 30 years. The topper is the home made sauces and mustard. This is our go to place in Springfield. Not to be missed!

Yelp
Wow! This was a great fast meal. Had yhe Pig Bird BbQ sandwich with the spicy bbq sauce. Huge Tender delicious sandwich with killer sweet and spicy sauce. The sides of beans and jalapeño cheese corn were sooo amazing I wish the bun was warm and l was not big on the coleslaw but would definitely come back to try burnt and do a single meat sandwich.

Yelp
In Springfield to visit family and needed some lunch. BBQ sounded fantastic! City BBQ popped up on Yelp and I decided to check it out. The ambiance is much like other BBQ places - sparse, but fitting for bbq joint. The service is fast and friendly. It is a queue up joint - not table service. Let's get to the food - all the normal bbq meats to pick from - brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and turkey. A few good sides to pick from as well - beans, corn, and cole slaw. I opted for a Smokestack (I think that was the name). It was a mix of brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and pork belly on a bun. It came with pickles, onions, jalapenos, and 3 types of bbq sauce (house, spicy, and mustard). All the meats were really good! Also, more than I could eat. Also, opted for beans and corn. Really, really good as well. N*joy!

Yelp
The food is always delicious and served fresh. It is counter service and then you pick where you want to sit. Get there early because they have a tendency to sell out.

Loren C.

Yelp
It's not what is use to be. You have new owners that are not there tending to the bbq daily. Plus, they don't have to order kiosks anymore. They use a small window behind glass as they think Covid is still around. Very impersonal and quiet in there, no life and the music is low or not on sometimes. It's like a library in there. It's sad, I wish they would go back to their roots when they opened.

Yelp
It is generally not a good idea to eat this much BBQ before boarding an airplane. But we couldn't help ourselves to sharing about 3 pounds of BBQ meat. Yes, they serve meat by the pound. The brisket and the sausages and sides were on point. The burnt ends were somewhat disappointingly dry. We rolled out happy.

Yelp
I had a turkey sandwich at City Butcher and BBQ, and it was hands down the best smoked turkey I've ever had--perfectly juicy, tender, and smoky. Definitely a place worth visiting for amazing BBQ!

Thayer T.

Yelp
I got the burnt end sandwich and it was like eating leather. I was sick for two days after. And the prices were ridiculous for what you got.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
Great TX style Q! Healthy dose of salt and pepper rub on the burnt ends and pork ribs paired nicely with their medium sauce. Just the right amount of food for my late lunch!

Yelp
Been a few years since I've been back to this restaurant. Luckily, I had the same great experience as last time. I tried out the (pork) ribs and turkey. They both tasted great. The ribs had a nice black-peppered taste to it and was decent quality. The turkey also had that same great black pepper seasoning to it. However, while the turkey meat quality wasn't bad, it was slightly lower quality than I remember it being. Also tried out the baked beans as a side item. While they had a nice smoky flavor to it, they could have been a bit sweeter. Overall, this is still very good barbecue restaurant and I would probably come up here again.

Jeff W.

Yelp
The ribs were amazing! Very tender with the perfect bite. The seasoning was on point. Staff was great. Ana Belle was so nice and running the show with excellence. Spent time talking with us about the restaurant and their food. I would HIGHLY recommend. Also, don't sleep on the pork belly. So good! Geaux Tigers!!
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Very delicious bbq with wonderful selections and combo plates!! Make sure you don't wait too close to closing time! When the bbq is gone for the day, it's gone!!

Kaleb K.

Yelp
Very good bbq. The bbq sauce is great, I really wish they would sell some for customers to take home.

Connie Case W.

Yelp
We have always loved City Butcher brisket. today was a disappointment; the meat had texture more like pulled pork and flavor was missing. Hope they are not changing quality of beef! and we were missing bag of chips. what gives?

Yelp
I asked for a recommendation on BBQ and was told this was the place to be at. We got there and about a handful of customers braved the cold and snow to eat there also. I wanted to try their ribs but they didn't have any so I got the burnt ends sandwich. When I got my food, I knew it wasn't going to be good because it was so dry. Glad I asked for two sauces. There are only two workers and both were very friendly when I placed my order and I didn't have the heart to tell them my burnt ends were way too dry. My co-worker didn't care too much for her sausage sandwich either.

Yelp
city butcher botched our thanksgiving turkey order and refused to acknowledge or fix the mistake. i preordered and paid for 6 lbs of turkey - almost $150. it was supposed to be ready the day before thanksgiving, wednesday. when i called to confirm before pickup, the man i talked to didn't seem to know anything about the order. he tried to tell me i had to get it on thanksgiving, which doesn't work as i'll be 1.5 hours away. he told me i could come in first come first serve. i asked him to please set aside the turkey, and he agreed. when my family member arrived as soon as possible there was no turkey. a worker named mercy (i think) told me on the phone that nobody actually put anything aside like he promised. she then told me she didn't really care and was annoyed with the entire thing and refunded the order. our family doesn't have turkey now - having paid ahead, we definitely relied on city butcher. it's not how a business should be run, and not how a customer should be treated. i'm so disappointed, and so are the 25 people who won't get turkey this year.

Yelp
Yelp thinks this is the 12th best BBQ in the nation? Has never been #1 best BBQ is Springfield. Best time passed long ago. Our office is around the corner and we will not go there. Overpriced for what you get and just average bbq. Go north a couple of miles and spend 1/2 and enjoy it more at Buckinghams or hit Crosstown.

Yelp
I was looking to try a new BBQ restaurant as I usually go to The Whole Hog & Gettin Basted. After doing some recon and looking at many reviews I decided to try City Butcher & Barbecue. Well, I'm very happy that I did! I ordered the last of their burnt ends which were peppered liberally and mouthwatering delicious. I also ordered the baked beans and those were nice and smoky with lots of scrumptious pieces of brisket. I had some of their jalapeño corn and that was flavorful as can be. The service was good, the food was great and the decor/ ambiance was fitting and modern. I give my ratings on those three components giving the most weight of the rating to the food followed by service and lastly the ambiance/decor.

Yelp
Brisket is wonderful, all most as good as mine, I think it's the best in Springfield! Tender, juicy and GREAT FLAVOR

Yelp
On our way back to Texas from Chicago, we made a stop here. There wasn't a wait on Tuesday around 2ish. We were able to walk right up. The cheese corn and sausages were sold out, but everything else was available. We took a minute to figure out what we wanted. The man taking our order was patiently waited and offered his assistance. We went with potato salad, a half pound of pork belly, and half pound of brisket. When asked about sauce, he suggested we'd just try all 3 since it was our first time to see what we'd like. Food - everything was great. Between pork belly and brisket though, I prefer the fatty, juicy pork belly. It's minimally seasoned and really let the meat speak for itself. I dabbled with the sauce and figured out I most prefer the mustard mixed with spicy bbq sauce. Food and service well done!

Brian W.

Yelp
The restaurant advertises "Texas style" barbecue. It isn't. Texas style is smoked in a pit over post oak wood. The result is a tender brisket with a pronounced pink smoke ring deep into the meat. This smoke ring is the tell. City Butcher's brisket is grey throughout without any hint of a smoke ring. It also has very little smoke flavor. It looks and tastes like brisket made in an electric smoker with wood pellets. Do this in central Texas and you will be quickly out of business. They also serve burned ends without any glaze. Their's is actually just the tips of brisket. Do that in Kansas City and, again, you will be out of business soon. Don't be fooled, don't waste your money and don't be disappointed by City Butcher. It's hype without substance.

JP B.

Yelp
Food.... Amazing!! Hospitality was even better!! When we entered the restaurant we realized the service was a sell out style service, "open till we sell out". We came pretty late in the day so the menu was limited but Annabelle took the time to show us the ribs and talk to us about how the meat was prepped and smoked. Unreal flavor and vibe. This is a must stop if you love BBQ!

Yelp
Several visits. Fairly clean and crisp interior with plenty of tables (a few tables outside, too, which are shaded until mid afternoon). The meats are good, particularly the beef/brisket. Burnt ends are the best offerings...great flavor and melt in ur mouth. Possibly the best burnt ends in Spfd with Knockout BBQ closed. Spicy bbq sauce had excellent flavor and kick, but wasn't necessary as the meat had a lot of flavor. Drawbacks: pricey... 1/4 pound of brisket or burnt ends is $8 ($32/pound). Also, the menu is limited and uncreative with only 4 or 5 boring sandwich offerings (to be fair, I'd just been in KC @ Joe's BBQ, which does BBQ sandwiches better than most).

karen n.

Yelp
This turkey & brisket is the best I've ever had. Tender, and smoked just right. I'm not a fan of their sides but their meats are superb. 5 stars.

Dian A.

Yelp
I have heard of this place for years and finally got there yesterday for lunch. I was really disappointed, considering the hype about the place. Yes, the brisket was outstanding was why it got three stars. The rest of the dining experience would have got it one or two stars. The wait to get our order in was way too long considering only two people in line ahead of us. The guy taking the order was not friendly and actually was a bit cocky with his answer when I asked a question about one of the side orders. And, they were out of the hot links that I wanted to order. The premium brisket sandwiches were amazing but the beans were not good. There was a huge piece of fat in the container that took up half of the space. The potato salad and the corn were ok. Probably will check out another barbeque place when I am back in Springfield.
google avatar

Andrey K.

Yelp
It was decent. Wasn't blown away. Ambience felt right and the food was okay. They were out of their Mac and cheese too
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Service is order at window then self service. Ambiance is okay but kind of bland. Food I had the brisket it was good but if you don't like pepper don't order it. Wife liked pulled pork. Daughter liked the pig bird sandwich her kid liked that sandwich but we also had the beans and corn while I liked both most at our table though they were way too spicy. Overall we thought the food was okay but the ambiance of the whole thing was basically order at window, seat down and eat then leave. Not really a restaurant feeling. (If that makes sense to you)

Michael C.

Yelp
The best bbq in the state but I cannot afford its crazily high brisket and burnt end prices. 5 stars for food, 3 stars overall, mainly because of prices. Personally I think the owners are price gouging their customers because I have seen many cuts of grocery store meats decreasing in price, often by a relatively large amount.
google avatar

Yelp
Best bar-b-que in town! Burnt ends sell out really quick tho. Annoying hours but food is well worth the wait!

Mark T.

Yelp
Just tried City Butcher for some Sunday late afternoon chow. I had called earlier to see if they still had everything available. Spoke with Phillip who informed me that they were out of burnt ends and a couple of sausages including hot links. I asked him if he was closing at 7pm and he replied, "Unless someone comes in and buys me out." Didn't get a good vibe from that so we piled in the car & headed to CB&B. The line was several people deep, I noticed the 2 ahead of us ordered burnt end sandwiches. When we ordered next, I asked if he was Phillip & that I thought he was out of burnt ends. He said he thought he had enough slabs to pull some burnt ends from. So we ordered 2 BE sandwiches, a half-slab of pork ribs plus an additional 2 single ribs for the granddaughter. We got sides of Potato Salad, Pit Beans, Cole Slaw (they were out of Cheesy Corn). We also ordered 2 Smoked Chocolate Chip Cookies to sample. Phillip and I talked BBQ while he whipped up our order. I asked why a company claiming TX BBQ didn't have beef ribs available. He replied that, due to the waste factor, they took beef rib orders by 2 pm the day before customer arrival. They do a large bulk order business by the pound as well as walk-in. When the day's food is gone, it's gone... The Burnt End sandwiches were absolutely awesome! My sister loved her ribs & my granddaughter wolfed down her 2 ribs along with some burnt ends that fell out of my wife's sandwich. The pit beans were good with lots of meat scrap in there. The slaw & potato salads were slightly above "meh" but the smoked chocolate chip cookies were killer. We bought 2 more after we divvied the original 2 - absolutely terrific! Great meats, serviceable sides, drop-dead good cookies. Try it for yourself - it's smokin' good eats!

Julie K.

Yelp
Costumer service was great, but sides were lack luster. Everything needed salt, Pepper, and flavor. Great portions for the price, but nothing was great.
google avatar

Ed W.

Yelp
Best bbq I had in Springfield area. Would definitely try again if in the area! Tried all the meats and sides and pleasantly impressed.
google avatar

Naz K.

Yelp
Awesome place , brisket and burned ends were nice, fatty and moist, awesome flavor, come early this place sells out fast. Employee super friendly and professional, place can hold big parties, clean and comfortable inside.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
I just happened to see this place while visiting the area for work. I got the brisket and pork belly sandwich, a hot link, and a jalapeño cheddar sausage. I'm a bit snobbish about my bbq, and I have to say this place knocked it out of the park. The bark on the brisket was crusty, thick, and just perfect in every way. All three sauces were excellent too. Friendly guy behind the counter prepping the food as well. Highly recommend! I will be back to try the burnt ends and ribs if I'm ever back in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Great BBQ the best in town for sure. Like 10 times better than anyone else. For this it is expensive but we all know who's fault that is. Not Putins. That being said, if you fail to bring your AMEX Black credit card, they have financing available. Not sure what the a.p.r is
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Passing through and found this place on Yelp. In a strip center, but bbq was excellent. Love that it is Texas style so you can order by weight. We had 1/2 links of Texas hot and Cajun andouille sausages plus 1/4 lb each of burnt ends and pulled pork. All just very well seasoned and just delightful. Individual sides of pintos, jalapeño corn, slaw, and potato salad. Pintos had nice chunks of beef and just a little spice. Corn was pretty spicy. Mayo slaw good. Potato salad was mayo not mustard based. Be warned that the small sides are each enough for 2 people. We didn't know that so had takeaway for later. 3 sauce options: Texas sweet, Texas spicy, and Carolina mustard.

Ronald M.

Yelp
Great BBQ! Brisket is made for those who like juicy brisket! Flavor is amazing and so is the service! Springfield's best BBQ hands down!

Bobby S.

Yelp
I ordered a brisket sandwich and found a long piece of hair in my brisket sandwich. It was a blonde long stain on hair and it must have come from the counter guy that had blonde hair. The worst part was, I discovered it after taking a bite out of the sandwich and pulled it out my mouth.
google avatar

Jim O.

Yelp
The best burnt ends I've ever had and it's not even close. The brisket was moist and has an peppery bark that I loved. The spiceybbq sauce is really good as well. Don't sleep on the smoked chocolate chip cookies.

Loren C.

Yelp
Great meat, but extremely slow service. They use to have two registers that made things faster. No music in the restaurant, or sauces at the table. I would love an explanation...

Steve S.

Yelp
The best bbq in town hands down. Don't even try any place else. But be sure to get there at open time as they sell out by noon on most items. It's a daily occurrence!!!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Great food and really friendly staff. I ordered the burnt ends sandwich and the meat was fire . My fiancé order smoked turkey and she "gobbled" it up. Sides were decent, the jalapeño corn has a kick so enjoy!

Vickie D.

Yelp
First time to eat at City Butcher. The sandwich was really good. I waited in line for 45 min. I finally ordered and got my food. Got home, opened the order and they gave us some kind of corn dish and not the pit beans I ordered. We live 15 miles out of town, so too far to drive back. Paid $6 for food that went in the trash. The receipt even said beans. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Joy R.

Yelp
Good self serv bbq restaurant. The meat is delicious. Has traditional sides fries, beans, slaw and a variety of sauces.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Great BBQ and prompt service. Out of some meats a little earlier than expected on a Sunday but still more than an adequate selection

Yelp
Glancing at Springfield made me wonder what foodie gems were located in this city and it didn't take long to find one. City Butcher BBQ is an unassuming place in one of Springfields many strip malls. Stepping inside you are greeted with an aroma and views that make your tongue water and your nose breathe deeply. They specialize in BBQ meats and sell plates and per pound option until they sell out! BTW they sell out frequently/. I opted to try a plate with two types of meats, their incredible sweet bun and sides of coleslaw and Mac salad. You have options for beverages and many other idea or add one as well as a pickle bar and incredible sauces to add to their delicious meats. Both the pork and brisket were amazing and the sides and pickles were fantastic additions. We are only here 4 days but we will be back and simply wish this place was in Minneapolis
