Sad to say, City Cellar let us down last night on New Year's Eve. The four of us arrived at 6:00 PM for the a la carte sitting: "A LA CARTE DINING 5PM-10PM." None us wanted the late seating, their "NYE CELEBRATION 9PM-1AM * $125 PER PERSON; Unlimited Top Shelf Open Bar * Chef's Selection of Appetizers; Champagne Toast at Midnight * Live DJ & Dancing All Night."
(1) Our friends asked for separate checks - the waiter said no can do. (2) Our friends split a Caesar salad, but while the waiter brought two plates, he just left the plates stacked on the table without a serving spoon and left the salad for our friends to serve themselves. (3) My buddy asked for a Stella Artois beer, but the waiter said they didn't have any. I saw that the some half dozen beers offered on the menu didn't include either Stella or even Budweiser. My buddy ordered one of the beers on their list. (4) I asked for a glass of their listed Chianti for later, with my meal, but the waiter told me to remind him when the meal was served ... as if that were my job. Of course, the meals were not brought out by the waiter, so I had to wave for a bus boy to please find my waiter. (5) We were done with dessert and cappuccinos and paid the bill (over $300 with tax and tip) by around 7:45 PM, but stayed a bit to chat and catch up, you know, why old friends get together on New Years Eve. At around 8:00 PM (an hour before the second seating), a managerial-type in a suit softly tells us they need the table (a nice way of asking us to leave).
All that said, the food was good. Two of us had the shrimps and scallops over risotto. I thought it tasted great, but my buddy's wife pointed out that the dish was mostly risotto and was also concerned it was too fattening. My buddy had the short ribs and was happy because it was very soft. My wife enjoyed their wild
salmon and potato gnocchi, but left over half the gnocchi.
Conclusion: food is good, service is awful. I first thought maybe it was just our waiter because we've been here several times before over the years and service was no problem, but then being asked to leave early after spending over $300, was entirely consistent with the service we received from our waiter.
