A Guide to Boston’s Community Fridges - Eater Boston

"The Jamaica Plain Community Fridge is back, and this time it’s set up behind City Feed and Supply on Centre Street. Acceptable items include clean produce that is in good condition, bread, water bottles, frozen food, canned goods, and other essentials. Pre-made meals are okay too, as long as containers are labeled with ingredients, date made, and expiration dates. The JP community fridge, originally located in front of D’Friends Barber Shop in Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square neighborhood, was one of the first to appear in the Boston area, organized by a team that includes Veronica Bettio, who got a how-to guide from the anarchist community organizer group A New World In Our Hearts (which launched a fridge in Brooklyn earlier in 2020), and Josiel Gonzalez, who was similarly inspired by community fridge projects in New York. “We would like for this fridge to be a safe zone for the community and serve as an outlet to come together and uplift one another,” Gonzalez previously told Eater. “We encourage folks in need to utilize the fridge and feed their families. No one should go to sleep hungry.”" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle

The fact that this place is right in my neighborhood is amazing. It’s small and has really everything you’d need in terms of household staples. The staff is so friendly and the chai latte I had was really wonderful. I did not try the sandwiches but there was a big line for them while I was in. It’s going to be something I need to try next I’m in.

Google
I’m giving City Feed and Supply five stars- not because of their groceries (overpriced) not because of their produce (also overpriced) but because of their BREAKFAST OPTIONS!!! The bagels and breakfast sandwiches at CFS are so delicious and I recommend to everyone.

Google
Best vegetarian sandwiches, and non vegetarian sandwiches. It is a great place to sit, relax with a coffee, watch JP walk by. They have lots of snack options and act as a boutique grocer. They have window seating, a few tables, and a bathroom. Great place for kids.

Google
Lively atmosphere with interesting items that you wouldn't get at an ordinary grocery store. This is a great place to go if you not only want groceries but want to explore with things you wouldn't want to get on an ordinary trip. However, I have to take off one star because of the pricing. Special things like gourmet cheeses or vegan eggs I can understand why the price would be higher, but not regular produce. Here, vegetables, eggs, milk, etc. is always more here than at ordinary grocery stores, which shouldn't be the case because here the products are the exact same. For example, red onions at Stop and Shop are $1.99 for a two pound bag, a half dozen eggs from Country Hen are $5.29, and this exact same bottle of Sriracha Sauce at a nearby Asian grocery store is $3.99. I know that City Feed is a special grocery store but prices for the exact same thing should not be this much higher. One more thing, I also saw a poster displaying that the workers are organizing for a union, I would be very interested about updates on that, and is something I believe City Feed should support as well. Overall, this is a great place, but I would only stick to buying gourmet or specialty items you wouldn't find at your ordinary grocery store.

I frequent this place about 3x/week and every time it is a different experience. Sometimes, there’s a group of 8 what’s seems to be high schoolers behind the counter and it takes 6 minutes to get a Cortado when there is no one else waiting in a drink. Other times, there’s only two people behind the counter and I have my drink in my hands in 60 seconds. I don’t really do the prepped food or groceries here just cause of pricing. I ordered a Caprese sandwich once (it’s called something else here) and for $13– I walked around the entire store seeing all the ingredients for the sandwich totaling to about same amount, except I could probably make 6 sandwiches 😅.

Love the overall homey vibe....delicious coffee among other sundry items, including fresh greens in a handy.. locally situated neighborhood setting!!:)) Welcoming management contributes to repeat visits, too!!:)) ✨️☀️🌞

Google
Absurd price, literally! Even if you're bananas at this place, all of sudden the cheap fruit it’s now expensive maybe because paint them in gold or something???. Ridiculous. That’s why we have nothing in JP and everything is closing down.

Cara

Google
Lovely concept, marred by airport-level prices and the staff’s too-cool-for-school attitude that’s very 5 years ago.

Yelp
I'm an old school lover of city feed but today I got a #12 and my guys put one slice of roast beef on it. The tomato and lettuce took up more space. Do better.

Yelp
" Great sandwich's & Coffee " We stumbled upon this place . It didn't disappoint. The sandwich's are delicious. The coffee is good . The service is great. The vibe is warm and welcoming. The vibe is like a community friendly deli . Parking is limited but manageable; just always read the signs before parking . The portion sizes are generous. You get a good bang for your buck here .

Yelp
This place is great! Has a nice little market with a bakery and coffee shop inside as well! The coffee is great, the service was very friendly and I'm already looking forward to coming back and grabbing a coffee on the weekends to come!

Yelp
Great little neighborhood market! Excellent sandwiches and customer service. Fresh vegetables and fruits, good selection of grocery staples. The staff on the evening I went was friendly and I was happy to see a varied selection of Coffee (including George Howell Terrier). They have an area to enjoy your sandwiches facing the street, high counters as well as table tops very comfortable and cozy. Street parking can be challenging... or at least it was when I went and I appreciate the fact they were open later. Respectfully Reviewed.

Yelp
I can't believe this place is still open. The sandwiches are laughably low quality. You want the worst sandwich in Boston? I've got you covered. Order a #5 and you can expect one *tiny* piece of rancid basil on a sandwich where basil is the whole selling point behind this $15 dollar sandwich. I have decided to boycott this place until they lower their prices or increase their quality. They've been this bad for at least 8 years now.

Yelp
Delicious VLT. A blt out the b. Smokey flavored tempeh with a barbecue sauce on multigrain bread lettuce and tomato. Large sandwich for 12.00 includes tax. . Half for 7. The large sandwiches worth it you can wrap it and take it home if you can't eat all of it. it pings all the things about a sandwich that I like the bread being major and a good filling They have many coffees to order other sandwiches and breakfast items. Also some grocery items in the store. I like the vibe here it's laid-back you go to the counter and order and take it to a seat or take out. I want to come back and try another sandwich.
google avatar

Taina G.

Yelp
Half sandwich is 9.00 ... there's no half in anything it's more of a quarter sandwich. I had first, second, and third hand embarrassment receiving this "sandwich". You order a VLT full size for 15.00 and you have to pay 1.00 each for a piece of lettuce, cheese, ? The cashier was struggling to take an order. The ambience eh, I was worried about the bee that kept flying around us. This is a hard pass. I rather get a Cumbies sandwich any day over this shop.
google avatar

Yelp
The residents who live near this store are fortunate. They have a wide variety of food and everything is made fresh. There is outdoor seating, which is enjoyable, if the weather is nice. The vibe is relaxed.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh produce. Kitchen staples. Fresh pies on Fridays. Local. Prices are high and keep inching higher. Coffee bar and salads and sandwiches. Call ahead for sandwiches as they can take a while to make at peek times. Employees are generally friendly and hard working.

Yelp
I've been going here for the last 15 years and absolutely adore this JP neighborhood spot. I always get the number 12 roast beef untoasted and a sticky bun and a few groceries like some local cheese or a loaf of bread. The sandwich prices are a bit steep but I enjoy the fact that they use iggy bread and partner with local bakeries. The actual groceries and produce are on the steeper end with okay quality, I honestly think you'd get more for your buck at the Whole Foods down the street. Overall, a good local spot for some sandwiches (I recommend calling in to order your Sammie's ahead of time during lunch rush and the morning) and not a bad spot to grab some small things in a pinch.

Dan ..

Yelp
What was once a beloved local institution has become an overpriced, rude embarrassment to the Jamaica Plain community. City Feed and Supply's downward spiral can be traced directly to the appalling attitudes and behavior of some of its staff, particularly the bald, inconsiderate sandwich maker who flicks his cigarette butts around the surrounding neighborhood like it's an ashtray. This grown man's shocking lack of respect for the very community that supports his employer is an insult to every resident who has to put up with his littering. Since the employees unionized, service has plummeted as a cavalier attitude of indifference has taken over. And the prices? They've skyrocketed to laughable highs. I had no issue with a small premium to support local business, but when it's paired with poor attitudes and disrespect of the neighborhood, it's one I can no longer support It pains me to denounce a place I used to frequent and support, but City Feed has forced my hand. With its alienating prices, compromised service, and utter disdain for the community, I can no longer spend my hard-earned money there. I hope the management wakes up, reinstills some pride and respect, and rehabilitates this fallen neighborhood gem before it's too late. But for now, I can't endorse supporting such blatant disregard for the very people who supported City Feed through thick and thin for decades.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. I was waiting in line for 10 minutes, and the manger skipped me inline and served a white lady instead of me because I am Mexican even though he made eye contact with me several times the 10 minutes I was waiting so I could place my order. When I called him out on it he glared at me and said " GET TO THE FUCKING LINE KID". So I Did so taking the higher road. Terrible experience and horrible deli if you are a person of color or a younger then 18 please don't go they are ageist and racist.
google avatar

Logan K.

Yelp
this place is very nice :) Though for some reason they have preserved lemons? And I've never really understood the point of preserving lemons like aren't lemons supposed to be fresh and that's like their entire thing ?? I suppose you could say that about pickles though and i love pickles. It just goes to show you stuff

Ben K.

Yelp
City feed tends to really skimp on the meat in sandwiches a lot, I had the prosciutto sandwich that legit had 3 slices of prosciutto on it one time. And also the sandwiches in general are fairly small for the price so there's only a few things in my opinion that are worth getting here... the #1 smoked turkey sando, or pretty much any of the drinks (drip coffee, iced coffee, barista made lattes and such). Everything else is a bit of a rip off. Go to Real Deal (just down the street a bit) for sandwiches

Yelp
I used to come here, many years ago, before moving to JP with a friend. She never minded waiting 20 minutes for a mediocre sandwich but I did. But I'm always willing to try again. I only came here today because Fiores doesn't open until 10. It wasn't even busy and the woman taking my order probably doesn't like working with customers. I'll never understand why people who don't like to show a modicum of enthusiasm for customers, work in jobs working with customers. Bare minimum effort on her part. My experience today was hardly different from my experience five or six years ago. Is this the same crew? Or is this a whole new fresh crowd of people who don't want to work here? I must give the owner operator props for consistently finding people who clearly do not give a ****, spanning across generations. Prices for groceries are outrageous. Food was fine. Nothing memorable. Fiores is the place for vegan sandwiches in all of Boston, the end.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Sandwiches are fine enough, but this place is a disaster. The service may be the worst in Boston. It's almost like they deliberately set out to provide the most rude, indifferent, and incompetent service in Boston. Also the grocery prices are comically insane, making Whole Foods seem cheap, and much of the produce is mediocre.
google avatar

Mack G.

Yelp
Cool little shop, questionable employees, prices weren't so great, can't imagine with all the negative food reviews that they'd implement GMP in the joint. Good for a thing or two but not daily shopping.
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
This place used to be great but after not being in JP for 5 years it has really gone down hill. My partner and I ordered sandwiches today- I had the smoked turkey and he had the salmon sandwich on baguette. My sandwich had a small hair in it and some of the lettuce was browned. His sandwich came out as the very end of the baguette and when he complained they said the reason was that he didn't order it on a bagel and that's the way it came out. When we came by last week, the sandwich was two times larger, so I'm not sure what that's about...the grocery store is also way over priced. Disappointing- this place used to be awesome.

Tracy E.

Yelp
Ordered a breakfast sandwich and it took FOREVER to cook-- 30 minutes; it's a simple egg sandwich! The worst part is that the person cooking my food is in a tank top, hairy armpits inches from my food. That is repugnant! Go elsewhere.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
Used to love this place now it takes a half hour to get a mediocre $13 sandwich. I want to like it but it just doesn't hold up anymore.
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
I love City Feed in theory- it should hit all the notes for me (local, organic, homemade, unique, etc.). But in reality, it's a little uneven, a little scattered, a little overpriced. On the cafe side, I like their tasty and imaginative coffee/tea/lemonade drink menu (try the mojito limeade in the summer), but I've also waited 25 minutes for a procuitto and moz sandwich during a non-busy time. On the grocery side, I love their local beer selection and commitment to other local purveyors, but sometimes their prices are a bit crazy and items are a bit ridiculously gourmet when all I need/want/can afford is basic (why oh why doesn't JP have an actual grocery store on either the Centre Street or Washington Street corridor???). At least the staff is nice.
google avatar

Roberta G.

Yelp
The "Farmers Lunch" sandwich is delicious. Interesting browsing if I have to wait a bit. Happy with expanded winter hours.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Cute hipster feel inside. I love their sustainable approach with their fair trade, local, and environmentally friendly products. I got the Smoked turkey sandwich. Everything there looked delicious. The sandwich was great and I'd get it again, but I did think the turkey ratio was way too low. I feel like I could have asked for double turkey and that would have just been a normal amount. Come on guys, we need our protein! Haha. Other than that the pesto sauce in the sandwich was to die for. I would consider buying this separately if they sold it! Also the bread was very fresh and delicious. I'm a firm believer that the bread is the most important part of the sandwich and should be chosen carefully... they succeed. Just really hope they start putting more meat on their sandwiches... Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
TL;DR: great local crunchy/granola grocery spot. You pay more but for fresh/local ingredients that you often can't find elsewhere. Over the past year and change of living in Jamaica Plain I've become something of a regular at City Feed. Full disclosure up front, it's more expensive that most grocery places but they carry a nice variety of fresh, local, and fair trade options. I've had sandwiches and coffees here (pre-covid, I don't believe these are available right now) and they're always good but I prefer Espresso Yourself for my coffee and Real Deal for my sandos. Nothing against City Feed, just personal preference and I like to spread out my local $$ spend. I mostly rely on City Feed as a specialty grocery spot. Some of my favorites I recommend from City Feed: (1) The fresh meat fridge - you can really taste the difference of fresh, local meat. In particular I love getting the bone in chicken thighs and roasting with some very basic herbs/spices. It's just really good chicken. They also frequently carry duck breasts that are incredible. (2) Fish options - in the summer I prefer the farmers market, but during colder months you can almost always get a nice piece of fresh salmon or cod here. I also love the salmon burgers they have in the freezer section. (3) Local milk, usually Thatcher Farms - yes it's more expensive but it really is that much more delicious than a gallon of Hood. Plus they take back the glass bottles and return your deposit so I just rotate through and get to minimize my plastic waste. (4) Lake Champlain Chocolates - most major chocolate brands (Herseys, Mars, etc.) are not child/slave labor free. I'm not being dramatic, Google it - Washington Post did a good piece on it a few years back. LC chocolates are super delicious and City Feed always carries a rotating seasonal offering. (5) Cat grass - it's literally just some non-toxic grass for your cat to monch on and my little furball loves it. It dies after a month or so but it's not super expensive so I don't mind getting it as a treat for him occasionally, especially in the winter when he can't go outside. Note: some cats vomit when they eat grass so keep an eye on your furbaby if you try it for the first time. (6) Mole Hill taper candles - I have never seen taper candles burn this evenly. I've gone through several sticks in different colors and never a single drip down the sides. They're perfect. I'm pretty sure you can buy them at the JP Whole Foods too. The staff is typically friendly and helpful and I've even been able to call ahead and have them hold specific ingredients for me that I've had trouble finding elsewhere (dried porcini mushrooms to be specific). Sign up for the rewards program to get $10 off periodically.

Megan H.

Yelp
Sandwiches are good but the service is really slow - waited over 30 minutes for two sandwiches. Granted, I came on a Saturday afternoon, but I thought I'd be safe at 2:30. I ordered the Big K Tuna and the Turkey/Brie sandwiches. Both were great, but the Big K Tuna was stellar - think of a tuna melt, but the tuna salad is mixed with really great flavors (onions, capers, etc). I'd come back for the food, but only if it was empty inside.
google avatar

Mercy B.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great selection of goods, very expensive. Long wait times for underwhelming sandwiches is the reason I put this review at 3 stars.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
Oh, hell no... So, over the past 6 years I have on ocassion found myself forced to go against my resolve and dash into City Feed on Centre out of dire necessity. The final straw came the other day when I needed a head of green cabbage...perhaps the cheapest vegetable available anywhere in the grocery universe. City Feed was charging $9.00 for a head of cabbage. Yup, NINE DOLLARS! I asked the clerk to double check thinking the $2.98 was per head, which would be OK-ish for conventional green cabbage, but it was per pound. A 3 lb cabbage was $9.00. Seriously? Even if I took the bus to Whole Foods and back, that head of cabbage would be cheaper ( and no doubt fresher). Talk about gouging. Done. Done. Done.

Lauren P.

Yelp
Do not buy sandwiches here. They are incredibly overpriced and, frankly, not good. I just bought a half Italian and I swear it was 2 inches long with 2 pieces of meat, 2 peppers, and a splash of seasoning. For $8.59! Highway robbery! If you are looking for a good sandwich, go down the street to Real Deal.

Kevin J.

Yelp
Honest review. I desperately want to support these guys, and glad the workers have a union. But seriously the service needs improvement. Without fail, it always takes a minimum of 20 minutes to get a simple bagel and cream cheese, even when its not busy. I truly hope they improve their ticket system or make the changes that need to happen. Especially at the prices they charge. It makes supporting & feeling good about them very difficult.

Tom M.

Yelp
Got two bagels and there was barely any cream cheese. It was the smallest amount of cream cheese I've ever seen acouldn't even eat it.
google avatar

Meredith A.

Yelp
I think this place is great. I usually get a roast beef sandwich on a baguette here, and everything seems to be really good quality. They also have a nice selection of gourmet groceries, and the atmosphere is very friendly. Very Jamaica Plain! Love it.
google avatar

Audra K.

Yelp
The store is so cute! Minus 3 stars because the first time I got a bagel with smoked salmon I was disappointed with the amount of salmon on the bagel. I figured I would try it again and this time mention to not go cheap on the salmon. I figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and see what happens. Again, next to nothing on the bagel, unless you count a massive tomato.
google avatar

Brendan H.

Yelp
Here's the thing--local businesses are not always good. This place has traded on the whole "support local business" thing for as long as they've been open, but there's really no reason to support them. The last time I went here, I waited, no joke, 30 minutes for a cold sandwich. If you sell sandwiches and you can't put a cold one together in a half an hour, it's time to close up shop. If this were an unusual occurrence, I'd chalk it up to a bad day. But this kind of service disaster is the rule here. I guess if you are feeling masochistic, you could pay twice as much for groceries as you do at Whole Foods (!) half a mile away. Or you could buy beer for about a 20% premium over what you'd pay at Blanchard's 2 blocks away. It's been years, and these folks just haven't figured out how to run a business. The constant flow of newcomers into Jamaica Plain will probably keep it in business forever, but once you've lived here a while, you'll know better.
google avatar

Marie K.

Yelp
Sandwich was great, but service was a bit slow and the prices of everything in the store were prohibitive. No way could I ever afford to buy regular groceries here.

D K.

Yelp
Either they're understaffed... or underpaid and don't really give a sh*t about being efficient and respecting customers' time. We continue to come here to support the newly unionized workers... but damn, every time we come, it takes 20-30 minutes to make two bagels with cream cheese. And the food is just aite, we're just looking for decent sandwiches and convenience, while trying to support local businesses. If you got all the time in the world, not a bad spot, but for the price and the wait, can't recommend it.
google avatar

Laynie86 ..

Yelp
I always get smoked turkey with avocado... it's always on point...staff is friendly...
google avatar

Chelsea V.

Yelp
I have to say I'm sick of this place. Every time, LITERALLY every single time I have come in here there has been some kind of issue, and it's been 6 years. It started with just rude staff or taking forever to get a coffee made, orders forgotten, things like that. The stuff they carry is great, local and fresh. I love it! However, I think it's time for them to re-evaluate the way they run this place. The past 4 times I have wanted to get a sandwich at the deli they have told me, well before closing that they ran out of bread or that they were no longer doing hot sandwiches. There is never an apology or an explanation as to why. It's been at varying times of day, and there's no consistency. I get it- you want to hold up this go-with-the-flow hippie vibe but get your crap together! If you can't have your products/services consistently, perhaps you should reconsider having them.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
City Feed is an exercise in compromise. They're super convenient, but also pricier than you'd expect. The line's often long, but the food's always good. If you did all your grocery shopping here you'd be broke, but it's perfect for getting a cup of coffee and a baked good. Look, you can't really complain because you know they're ethical-minded, locally-focused, and hey, they probably pay their employees a decent living wage, too. So pick up your delicious $10 sandwich, run into everyone you know, and stop complaining.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Good drip coffee. Not much seating was available, which I guess is evidence of being a good family friendly place to meet and eat. The food looked good, though I didn't get to try anything myself because of the line and time constraints.

Jane P.

Yelp
Half of the food here is expired or on its way out. No consideration for expiration dates in a grocery store that makes Whole Foods look like market basket in price but unfortunately not in quality. Never have I thought "wow I'm so glad I paid 4x the normal price for this onion". I loathe that this is my only option for groceries. Despite trying to paint a local business image and the barren shelves they've got a giant billboard above Whole Foods (who also admittedly sucks).

Wilbur P.

Yelp
The best cappuccino... Espresso machine has been closing at 2pm Great all around city market with non-commercial, small production, artisan brands. Cool rewards program offered too. Micro brew section not too shabby. Nice staff.

S T.

Yelp
Both items on my order were wrong. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and a large English Breakfast tea with milk and 2 Splenda. I got a sausage, egg and cheese (discovered after I left) and an Earl Grey (which I asked to be corrected). I got my English Breakfast tea but discovered after I had left, that they had put honey in my tea! Couldn't drink it do had to toss that in the trash.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
The vegan sandwiches are so good! Very happy they have a tofurkey option. I also come here for a bagel and cream cheese on the weekend sometimes. The three stars are because it's very pricey to shop here. I get that it's natural food but they could offer some bulk stuff or some deals maybe? Great place to stop for a coffee, sandwich or couple of items but be prepared for the price tag.
google avatar

Roger F.

Yelp
Used to be great. Good food and coffee and ambience persist, but increasingly bad service (surly non smiling, like...ever) girl at the register who got my order wrong and amazingly slow food preparers, as in, 20 min for a sandwich - why? When there are only a few customers waiting in line? This place seriously needs a competitor on Centre St. - run by grownups peut-être?
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
Why this place only has three stars is insane. Came here this past Saturday and once again was amazed on how good the sandwiches are. The staff is nice and I got my sandwich quick. We found seats. Ignore the reviews this place is amazing.

CR B.

Yelp
I always have the best interactions with the staff here. They are super friendly and helpful, even at the busiest times of day. It's a little more expensive than I can afford regularly, but they have a great selection of fresh and local groceries. It's a lovely neighborhood store!
google avatar

Simon L.

Yelp
Totally uninspiring sandwich - two measly slices of roast beef on a baguette. A few pieces of lettuce, no cheese, and some mayonnaise complete this pitiful excuse for a meal. After waiting for 15 minutes to order and then literally fighting for a place to seat, i highly recommend you not waste your money or your time here.
google avatar

S P.

Yelp
Solid 3 star place. Sandwiches were good, interesting menu selections, though they were not very generously filled. Service was not great... the cashier was not paying much attention so had trouble taking our order. The worst part of our experience was the persistent panhandler RIGHT in the entrance who seemed to be a permanent installation and was also smoking there. It left us uncomfortable. The wait wasn't too bad and ingredients seemed fresh. The hot sauce (only one kind, though) was excellent. The prices are quite high even compared to local/organic/small batch stuff. I'd probably try it again if in the area and I could get a parking spot.
