"From the monumental, austere City Gate I took in a master class in palimpsestic architecture: plunging 16th-century walls that snake around the fortified harbor sit below a skyline crowded with Corinthian columns, Art Deco friezes and a 1950s Triton fountain that recalls the city's maritime heritage, while distant hills are topped with Baroque churches and the ruins of prehistoric megalithic temples. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, the current gate is the fifth on the site and the product of a 2014 project by Renzo Piano Building Workshop that pared back later additions and reinstated the drama of the original medieval stone ramparts—an intervention that brought clarity to the old city and opened the door for the development that has followed." - Adam H. The city gate is a great place to stay you wander around the old city of Valletta. The shear size and scale of the walls is so impressive. The gate has been made to accommodate all the visitors to the old city and it works very well with a wide bridge giving access to the city.

Valletta must be visited! Be prepared to do lots of walking up and down steep roads and lots of stairs. Filled with quaint cafes and shops. Also be ready for lots of tourists during the summer months.

This represents the entrance of the fortified town of Valetta and the old houses and streets, leading to Fort St Elmo. You can see the 2 modern structures in big blocks of stone and the ancient ones. There is a huge place with a wonderful fountain in the center. There are some small food trucks on the side, where you can buy some affordable sandwiches, pastries and drinks of all sorts.

A nice and clean place. Quite peaceful, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shops. It’s very safe, without undocumented individuals posing as doctors or engineers like in Western Europe.
