"From the monumental, austere City Gate I took in a master class in palimpsestic architecture: plunging 16th-century walls that snake around the fortified harbor sit below a skyline crowded with Corinthian columns, Art Deco friezes and a 1950s Triton fountain that recalls the city's maritime heritage, while distant hills are topped with Baroque churches and the ruins of prehistoric megalithic temples. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, the current gate is the fifth on the site and the product of a 2014 project by Renzo Piano Building Workshop that pared back later additions and reinstated the drama of the original medieval stone ramparts—an intervention that brought clarity to the old city and opened the door for the development that has followed." - Adam H.
