The 17 Best Restaurants in New Orleans’s Freret Neighborhood | Eater New Orleans

"Healthy salads are at the heart of the locally grown City Greens founded by entrepreneurs Abhi Bhansali and Ben Kazenmaier in 2012. The Freret Street location is the second in their portfolio, with a trademark seasonal menu fueled by the company’s own hydroponic farm in Cottondale, Florida as well as other local growers. Build your own bowl, pick up a family meal, or try verdant combos with ingredients like avocado, quinoa, and sous vide beets." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Looooove! City Greens in my go-to spot to stop and get a salad. City Greens is conveniently located right on Poydras which I love, it’s only two blocks away from me. I usually order a “make your own” salad; however, I’ve been in love w| the Chili Crunch Caesar w| shrimp and turkey + all the other veggies I love. You can not go wrong w| City Greens!

Google
Chose this for lunch today! It's a little hidden because it's inside the bank, but you truly cannot miss their bright green sign outside! The staff were all very kind, and the service was quick! The servings are also HUGE, making sides unnecessary and the prices seem more than fair. I had planned on building my own but kinda panicked and just got the turkey and avocado wrap, but it was so so good and full of flavor and fresh ingredients! Very happy I stopped in!

Google
I just had a great lunch at City Greens. BBQ chicken on a spinach wrap. So good! Fast, friendly service. They were very helpful since it was my 1st time visiting. I would definitely recommend visiting!

Google
Worst salad I've had in my life. Welted old lettuce. Old lettuce that's gone YELLOW to WHITE??!!! I was in food hell. I couldn't even take picture of the disappointment. Chicken OLD DRY like did you drop this back of your stove and pick it up 3 days later?? The salad dressing was pure acid/vinegar but not lemon lime or any juice. All sour. Yuck. Nola is hell when it comes to healthy nutritious food. Ppl travel here to pig out on junk food. We need better food choices in this city & this place made me cry by the poorest quality salad I got. Half size almost double price. 20$ after tax AND I paid to add apples + candied walnuts. These ppl gave 4 crouton size apple & 3 crushed walnuts. A disgrace takeout order & as usual I was not compensated for it by doordix

Google
Great salads and fresh ingredients. The chili crunch is my favorite topping. My only issue is the smell of this place. I don't know what it is but when I walk in, I always get hit with a unpleasant scent. Not sure if they are having plumbing issues or what, but the smell is little off-putting.

If you are looking for a fast and healthy option, City Greens is the place. You can build your custom salad or pick one of their delicious options on the menu. Their press juices are just as good.

Google
I've had City Greens a few times and just forgot it existed after moving away for a few years.. I just ordered it for delivery and I've completely re-established my love for it! My go-to order is the Southwest Salad no blue chips add chicken with cilantro lime and spicy chili crunch dressing mixed!

Google
Really friendly and helpful girl at Elmwood location. And patient, we’d never been here and had a million questions. The ingredients we could see her putting on were fresh and real, not fake gunk. We loved both soups! I forget the name of each one but I’m picky and they were both quality ingredients and delicious. She added cheese on top if we wanted- real cheese, and offered a small side of fresh sourdough bread that was so good! The wrap was huge and really good. I went back the same afternoon for a cup of the soup to take home. The price was reasonable. There was a counter with water and cups available and lemon wedges. The water tasted filtered. Very clean place too.

Yelp
The food at City Greens is fresh, healthy, and so clean. I've had their wraps before and I recommend the Thai Chicken Wrap or the Southwest Wrap. Most recently, I tried the custom salad option where you can pick and choose the ingredients you want. There are tons of different garnishes and dressings to choose from and I'm sure there is something on the menu that will satisfy anyone chooses to eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
Fine option for lunch delivery. They offer a variety of salads and wraps. Beet Street (beets, goat cheese, walnuts) and Southwest salads (black bean, corn, pepper jack) both have fresh greens, tasty dressing. Not fancy, but fresh.

Melissa D.

Yelp
$15 for a Southwest salad with barely anything on it besides lettuce. I'll stick to the local joints, thank you.
google avatar

Alice N.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats. I ordered a build your own salad with the roasted chicken thighs. I don't know what you season them with but there was so much pepper, it rendered the salad inedible. Literally all I taste is pepper. Either the inaccurate description or better yet, change the seasoning blend. And don't claim it's blackened either. Blackened doesn't equal indelibly hot. The "blackening" should come from paprika, not red pepper.

Melissa W.

Yelp
Not so green City Greens. Paid $16 for a salad today and ALL the avocado was rotten. #disappointed

Yelp
The guy at the counter was awesome. Food was fresh and great. Will definitely come back !!

Yelp
I work in the same building as City Greens and have been eating their since they first opened. I have ordered lunch for myself and catering for my entire office and the food has consistently been great, I love the "farm to table" aspect of it, and the service is top notch. I would recommend them to anyone!

Yelp
Got a salad through Uber Eats because I was looking for something healthy. Super happy with my southwest salad and ability to customize. Price was good too! Will definitely try some other salads soon. Glad to have a healthy, fast, food options!

Yelp
If this is the same establishment that is on the B Terminal at the MSY airport, it was fantastic. Been traveling for 2 weeks and eating like crap because I couldn't find good options on the road. Found this spot waiting on my plane. The Turkey Avo wrap was exactly what I needed. Full of flavor and fantastic. Could also tell the staff was trained well. Courteous and nice with good customer service. Not what I have found elsewhere in quick food in New Orleans. Suggest you put the airport location on Yelp and show off the menu board. Wish I had this option back home. Thanks.

Yelp
The food is fresh and tasty. The vegan options are: a) Vegan quinoa, kale, and corn salad (can be prepared as a wrap); b) Avocado Hummus wrap with Tofu (instead of chicken); c) Build Your Own (salad or Wrap); and d) Soup of the day (there's usually a vegan option). They have a stand of plain ice cold water, as well as ice cold water infused with fresh ingredients (mint, cucumber, etc.). I've had both the vegan quinoa, kale and corn salad (in a spinach wrap) as well as the Avocado Hummus wrap with Tofu. Both tasted excellent. I asked for light dressing (they have a few different vegan dressings). I've had their soup of the day twice. Both times it was tasty, and piping hot. I'm giving 3-stars because the food staff is not at all concerned with ingredient contamination. They touch all the ingredients with the same gloves. When tossing ingredients in a mixing bowl, ingredients will fall into neighboring containers. Mixing bowls are reused, though I can't tell whether they are washed or rinsed in between use or not. Tongs to mix the ingredients in the mixing bowl are also reused, and they are definitely not washed or rinsed because you can see them sitting in a container of water in between use. They don't clean the knife in between cutting wraps. If you have an allergy, or are otherwise very strict, you'll be disappointed. If you can live with the cross-contamination, you'll love the food.

Yelp
I have been in NOLA for almost a week and came upon this incredible salad spot. Exactly what I needed! Had the Southwest salad-a definite winner

Yelp
A good spot to get in your greens! Placed an order online and walked over and it was a very easy pickup. I know they also do delivery and you can pay online or in the store. I got the southwest salad and everything tasted fresh and delicious. My only complaint is the lettuce leaves are huge- I wish they would chop them up some more (but I guess this is a tactic to give you less lettuce?). My salad ran me $9.86 with tax and it was well worth it. They also have healthy snack options, drinks, and wraps.
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
If you like $16 salads this is the place for you! Don't bother getting the build your own salad, every ingredient is an extra charge. As for the taste... the price was so unappealing to me that it tasted like cardboard
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!! I keep begging them to come uptown! I'd eat here everyday. UPDATE: Just saw the new location!! It's finally happening! So excited!!
google avatar

Lena N.

Yelp
Such a nice place to grab a tasty, fresh, & healthy lunch!! Got the Thai chicken peanut wrap with a tomato tortilla and loved it :) The line can get pretty long around lunch time since it's in a pretty busy downtown area! Very quick service however and many selections of juices, salads, and wraps to choose from!!
google avatar

Channyn S.

Yelp
TMI Post: Literally the worse salad I've ever had in my life. I got the Caesar truffle salad and added chicken. The chicken was so unseasoned and dry. It made entire salad was just sooo disgusting. About 2 hours after eating it, I began to get sick. I literally had to barf twice and it made my stomach very uneasy and unsettled. NEVER going back to this place.
google avatar

Anees T.

Yelp
Actually found this place on my way to getting a po boy! It's a really great spot for lunch and especially for healthy options. The salad I got was fantastic! The fresh ingredients and the salad dressing created a wonderfully unique flavor! It's a bit on the pricey side but expected with high quality ingredients. The salad is a bit on the small side for me but they pack a lot of stuff into it. Got the southwest salad with an egg instead of tomato and added shrimp. Loved it! They also do wraps. So lots of good options. Overall a very good experience
google avatar

Alli K.

Yelp
This location is packed during lunchtime! The line is always very long, but the staff does a good job at getting people their food quickly. They have a lot of good topping options. There is indoor and outdoor seating. They also have cold water out. My biggest complaint is that they don't ask if you want your salad chopped. I didn't know this was an option until the woman behind me in line got her salad chopped.
google avatar

Candace S.

Yelp
I love that they have fast and healthy lunch options. The portions are large and it is always so fresh. It makes me want to live my life better (LOL). For real, when I leave there after eating one of their wraps or salads I feel like I have added years to my life. This is always a possibility when I'm wanting a healthy, guilt free lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
So this is a new favorite for ordering into the office. Portions are generous and the toppings are fresh. I had the chopped Cobb with blue cheese dressing and it was amazing! I'll be a regular (dine in and carry out) here for sure! Thank you for making eating well easy City Greens!

Yelp
I'm glad I decided to give this place a try! I had the Southwest Salad and it was very tasty and fresh! Will definitely return
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Good spot for fresh options. They have salads and wraps. You can make your own or choose from their list. Any of their options can come as a salad or a wrap. I got the chopped cobb. My husband got one of their seasonal specials. Neither one of us were disappointed.
google avatar

Camden M.

Yelp
I ordered through UberEats, and after my wait time the driver shows up with my salad that ALMOST had everything I paid for. I guess he ate that part of my salad.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
I eat here every time I can for lunch! I love the Thai Chicken Wrap with the spinach wrap. The flavors go well together and the cilantro just hits the right taste bud with the Thai flavoring! You can make any wrap into a salad and any salad into a wrap! If you don't like anything on there, you can also make your own!
google avatar

Pacience S.

Yelp
I keep wanting to love City Greens and I just can't. Today I ordered the Thai Shrimp wrap because i love all the flavors the peanuts the lime juice the shredded carrots all the fresh flavors I was craving and trying to shy away from chicken or beef I ordered the shrimp. The shrimp looked good and even had a decent flavor though not sure they were boiled as listed or if they were they were way over boiled. The shrimp were so mushy they were almost a paste. The wrap looked so good which only made the fact it was uneatable even more disappointing. The only saving grace was an oatmeal and apricot cookie from Willa Jeans and a bag of Pop chips. The staff here is really nice but after a few 15.00 lunch fails I think I'm going to have mark this off my down town lunch option l

Yelp
Just ordered from City Greens for lunch. I used Postmates to have it delivered they also can be ordered through Uber Eats, however postmates is $1 cheaper. I ordered the southwest salad add chicken. And my boyfriend had the BBQ wrap. Through postmates the total was $27 for the delivery fee and the salad and the wrap. It was super good, exactly what I wanted. The only hung is it was $3 more for chicken in my salad and next time I would go without because it didn't really add much to my salad. But I totally recommend this place.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
The service here is very fast. I went in and he line was pretty long. I wasn't going to drag my mom somewhere else so we waited and chatted. Next thing you know I had to quickly look at the menu, bc I was at the front and had no idea what I wanted. There is a wide variety of meals to choose from. You can also select from different types of breads as well. The subway of green food. #ApprovedByMe

Yelp
In the several years I've been eating at City Greens, I've never had a bad experience. That says a lot to me about the quality of product and service. You can't go wrong with one of their delicious salads or wraps (all salads can be made into wraps and vice versa), and the mushroom soup is to die for! If you're just getting soup you can skip the line, which at peak hours can reach epic proportions. I also love the cooler of prepared foods and drinks, which also allows you to skip the line if you're just grabbing and going. The cold Thai peanut noodles are my all time favorite item and don't pass up the tuna salad. Both are amazing and super affordable. I also like that if you pay with the app, you accrue loyalty points for a reward and your purchases are billed at once towards the end of the month. I'm not a fan of their house made juices, but they're certainly not the worst I've ever had. The staff is super friendly as well.

Yelp
This is definitely my new spot for lunch during the work week! City Greens is sensational! I built my own salad and I was impressed with just how fresh everything is. Its essentially farm to fork eating for on the go people. It was nice to see that the Poydras St. location in the First Bank building had a special discount for members of the hospitality industry. Definitely give this place a go for clean healthy eating on the run.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
I ordered online for lunch at the suggestion of my coworkers. First off, it's a bit hard to find--inside an office building. The bank employee who I asked when I was lost was super friendly and helped me. I had the seasonal salad as a wrap and it was delicious! Lettuce, squash, cranberries and pumpkin seeds. My food was ready when I arrived and I just had to tell them my name and sign for it. A bit overpriced in my opinion and tricky to find. It's also a small shop and the ceilings are kind of low which makes it feel smaller.

Yelp
Accidentally made an online order to this location when it was suppose to be for the citrus Blvd one. I called and they transferred my order. Very kind unlike citrus blvd. Thank you

Yelp
A HEALTH FOOD "TAQUERIA" all items prepared in front of you to order; ABOUT THE BEST VEGETARIANISH café in the Quarter/CBD. AFFORDABLE: all non-seasonal wraps & salads less than $10; Cup of soup $3! I've been on a search for fresh ingredient, healthy lunch options in the French Quarter/CBD. As you can imagine, most New Orleans restaurants serve foods either fried, slathered in cheese or cream sauces, wrapped in white bread or atop pasta, or laden with preservatives and sugar. Here are my findings for the 5 most notable: #1. The Best: "CARMO". There is really no way to go wrong at this open kitchen café. Unhealthy ingredients are replaced with interesting combinations of tropical spices, nuts, raisins, & fruit. And none of the large, filling salads are more than $9! #2. Close Second: "CITY GREENS". Sort of a high end, healthy gourmet "Subway" but not that much more expensive. All wraps & salads are less than $10, & items are made to order. #3. Faux-getarian: "BACK TO THE GARDEN". Although it claims to be vegetarian, 90% of all items include cheese, starches or dairy based condiments. But it's cheap, fast and items are customizable. #4. Price Gougers: "MEALS FROM THE HEART". Not really vegetarian, in fact besides the smoothies everything has cheese, eggs, and bread. The menu is inventive however, but pricey: $9 pancakes? $11 omelets? #1,000,000. Dead Last! "GREEN GODDESS". Probably the most true vegetarian options but it's also outrageously expensive: a $10 Wedge Salad?? And what's with the unhealthy cheese selection that's over half the menu? Note To Vegetarians: cheese is not healthy and much worse for you than lean meat!

Yelp
I ordered City Greens online as I was exiting City Hall recently. I got the build your own salad with Mixed Greens, Avocado, Black Beans, Egg, Feta, and Lemon Basil Vinaigrette. I also got a side of pita chips and a Chilled Thai Noodle Salad Side. Everything was ready when I walked in, and I was in and out in less than 30 seconds; it was great. The salad itself was exactly as I had ordered, and everything tasted fresh. Good quality, good taste, good deal.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice healthy option amidst the heavy Cajun food. The line can be long during the lunch hour. They offer a variety of options which is very nice and you can customize your own salad. A bit on the pricey side but its always more expensive for healthy foods. All salads are the same size.
google avatar

Brett H.

Yelp
-Great service -Clean Eco friendly environment -Super fresh food -A bit costly but worth it! -Highly recommend it to vegans or people looking for a fresh raw healthy meal

Yelp
My office ordered City Greens delivery for a working lunch today. Our department is 9 people and everyone found something they liked. The ordering online was very easy. The delivery time was reasonable for a work day though our office is only a few blocks down Poydras. I was initially nervous about ordering the Quinoa, Corn, and Kale salad, but was very satisfied! The quinoa was cooked perfectly and the corn paired well with the roasted tomato vinaigrette. The salad portion size is reasonable, but expect to pay for the quality and freshness of the ingredients. At my office, we joke that we'll only eat $12 salads when it's on the company's dime! But I recommend City Greens to others and will continue to grab lunch there even out of my own pocket!

Yelp
On my search for food that is not deep fried, I stumbled upon this place (with the help of Groupon thank you very much)! How to get there: Once you enter the 909 building, go to the right of the front desk/security and straight back until you see a room full of green; green walls, green decorations, and the best of all, green food! Brownie Point: menu on the door so I can stand there and see what I want instead of awkwardly holding up the line with my indecisiveness when it comes to menu choices (-.-)" This is the place for people who know what they want because you can create your own salad :) too bad I'm the kind that needs guidance haha, but that's why there's other stuff on the menu where they already decided the combo for you, including salads, wraps, and soups. What we got: Thai shrimp wrap -peanuty sauce was just ok -yay veggies! -fresh Turkey avocado wrap -apparently it was a little too salty/saucy, but I didn't try it myself so I can't really say too much :/ Overall, this place kind of reminded me of Cafe Zizzi (in the Balcony Cafes) where you can create your own salad, wrap, etc. too, but for some reason I like Cafe Zizzi more... hmm... maybe because they cook the shrimp/chicken/beef right in front of you on the grill instead? on a separate note: there's a Jamba Juice in New Orleans?? Whhhaattt? I know where I'm going next!!! :D tehe!

Yelp
A-DDIC-TED! I have never been a person who would just go somewhere and order a salad but this place is really as good as it gets. Fairly long lines during lunch but they move sooooo quick that you can still get in and out in a decent amount of time. They are super efficient. I like trying a lot of the seasonal salads. I've had the strawberry fields salad with shrimp which is a summer salad that originally had me hooked to this place. I can't wait for summer to get it again. I got it three times in one week. There's another seasonal salad called the fall house salad which has apples and cranberries. I can't recall the name of the pear salad that I had recently but it was good also. You can pick if you want light, medium or heavy dressing. I highly recommend anything lol but enjoyed each of these: BBQ chicken wrap Taco truck wrap Thai shrimp peanut wrap Too many salads to even name Don't forget the chocolate Oreo cookies at the register.....DELISH! I love this place. I feel like I need a punch card to get something off after the 10th salad because I've far exceeded that. The salads are extremely filling and worth the price. Always nice people. I'm definitely a fan!
google avatar

Janea M.

Yelp
Yum! I got the Santa Fe salad and it was great! I got the turkey avocado wrap for my daughter and it was to die for. So fresh and delicious!

Yelp
I cannot stress enough the amount of love I have for City Greens. I've only ever had the Chopped Cobb salad and Cucumber Lemonade because I got it the first time I visited and I can't imagine ordering anything else. I really want to, but I love this salad so much. I know the prices are a little high but I never care how much it costs. The quality of farm to fork can't be beat. And you MUST try the Cucumber Lemonade. Seriously, absolutely amazing. I don't know of another place in the city where I get undeniably giddy every time I get to eat there, and I'm not stranger to food in New Orleans. And yes, I get giddy over this salad.

Yelp
No, I don't work in the CBD, but somedays I yearn to clutch my briefcase and walk with a purpose down Poydras...Today, whilst wearing my tennis shoes and Dirty Coast "Do Watcha Wanna" shirt, I got to catch a glimpse into the #CBDlife with lunch down at City Greens. City Greens don't play...Eating salads shouldn't feel like eating rabbit food. City Greens does a good job at shaking up a bold flavored salad, my favorite being their Farm Fresh Greek with fresh crunchy cucumbers, light shaved onions, kalamata olives, tomatoes, roasted peppers, parsley, sheep's milk feta, bibb lettuce; tossed in a greek yogurt ranch dressing. I would say pack some gum before heading back to the board room since these robust flavors can cause some robust breath. The space is smaller than the Elmwood location, but there is also some seating outside. It was 12:45 but still a bit of a line around this time that took about 15 minutes (just an FYI). The staff were a little rushed, but there was a really nice employee who seemed to know his regulars and greeted them, bringing that laid back love to lunch hour...and delicious bread...I figure since I went heavy on the dressing, some bread wouldn't hurt to soak up all the yum yum. They had ma' fave San Pellegrino Blood Orange soda, other bevs, and their array of fresh made juices. Next time maybe I'll rock the power suit, but I can definitely say this is a great healthier option for people in this area to get their lunch bunch on at.

Yelp
At a training session, city greens catered the event. I thoroughly enjoyed the wrap sandwiches, specifically the Thai chicken wrap. It was plump full of chicken and delicious Thai sauce.
google avatar

Monique R.

Yelp
Close to my job downtown, so it's convenient and healthy. My go to salad is the Southwestern. Good mix of greens, corn, onion, and black beans. The lime vinaigrette dressing is the perfect match for this salad. food can be ordered on line and picked up on site or it can be delivered to your office or hotel room. The downtown location closes at 3pm, so be mindful of that when you order. Salads can be a bit pricey, but they are filling.
google avatar

Mia R.

Yelp
In the city of over-indulgence and rich fatty foods, City Greens is a welcome relief. Great combinations available on their menu with the option to make your own salad as well. Tons of options to choose from and quality ingredients. Also, a nice selection of pressed juices to-go. In a business office building, so the lunch rush is busy but the line moves quickly.

C F.

Yelp
I just ordered from City Greens for first time through Postmates. Their caprese salad was incredibly disappointing. The bowl looked completely full after I picked out the very few pieces of tomato, mozzarella, and croutons. I had high hopes for this place, but definitely will not be ordering a $10 salad for a tiny amount of toppings that ends up being $17 Postmates.
google avatar

Mimi M.

Yelp
Marinating the tofu would do wonders. Serving plain tofu gives tofu a bad name. Otherwise, it's nice to have a salad place in the CBD. Stick to the menu; prices for add ons easily get out of control.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Walked in about 1:15pm on a Thursday & no line. Ordered Cobb salad chopped, add chicken, medium dressing. Amazingly fresh & delicious! Got a cucumber lemonade and it's definitely worth the hype.
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
The worst entre salad I've ever had. Expensive and bland, it's a place I'll not willingly return to for a quick office lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food and very good fast service. I especially love the juices too. Just be careful they gave calories that are high sometimes so I use the juice as a meal replacement. I really enjoyed my meal and juices I purchased.
