I try not to be negative in reviews, but unfortunately this one will be a bit on the negative side.
I was anticipating good things when I looked at the menu. It is a nice collection of interesting entrees (not the standard burgers and chicken wings), and they advertise prime steaks.
I decided on the Chicken Marsala, which is one of my favorite dishes. It was served with a salad, starch, vegetable of the day and a dinner roll. The salad was nicely presented, but I will say that one of my restaurant pet peeves is getting a salad in which all of the ingredients are placed separately on the plate. I think a mixed salad should be mixed. If not mixed, it makes it more difficult to eat because it is often difficult to mix it well if it fills the whole plate, which this one did. I don't like having to butcher my own salad. It's just a peeve, not a deal-breaker. The salad was fresh, crisp and had a nice selection of ingredients.
The first problem was that my entree arrived when I was barely into my salad. I asked the server if they could hold it warm in the back until I finished my salad, but he said they couldn't. Okay, I prefer not to feel as though I need to rush through my salad, but I could live with that.
The entree was disappointing. As I said, Marsala is one of my favorite dishes. The sauce should be velvety and smooth with a nice light body. The sauce on this dish was like flavored water. It was runny, with no body and no texture. The sauce wasn't emulsified, so it was thin and watery with little globs of fat floating in it. It was as though the sauce was just mixed together and wasn't properly reduced. It turned the breaded chicken into a soggy, gummy mess. The flavor was pretty good, but the mouth feel was way off. The starch was mashed potatoes, which were nicely seasoned and a nice consistency.
All in all, it wasn't bad, but at $31 for Chicken Marsala, one should be able to expect that they would make a good Marsala sauce. All the ingredients were there, but it wasn't executed very well. I am hoping that this was just a hiccup. It's not as though they just threw a bunch of crappy ingredients together and it could never be good. Just seems like a little attention to detail and it would have been very good.
I would hope that this was just an aberration. I will be willing to give the place another shot because there seems to be a lot of potential.
