The 24 Best Things to Do in San Francisco

"Founded in the 1950s by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and college professor Peter D. Martin, City Lights became famous for publishing Howl by Allen Ginsberg (and undergoing an obscenity trial as a result) and developed a reputation as one of the country's most interesting bookshops. Today, City Lights still publishes some of its own books, with a particular focus on poetry and titles that speak to vital political and social issues, and runs a well-stocked bookstore. If you want to supports artists, discover a new writer published by a small press, to imagine yourself in Kerouac's shoes, or to kill an hour before meeting someone for dinner, this is your place. Their selection is great and, for poetry lovers, the Poetry Room upstairs—with its vast, comprehensive collection—is a place of legend. You needn’t look far for signs of fans’ love of the place. During the pandemic, when it was thought the store might close indefinitely—and the store’s CEO posted a heartfelt GoFundMe asking readers for support—City Lights devotees donated $500,000 in four days to help the iconic store survive." - Kimberley Lovato, Carey Jones

"In an age when many independent bookstores have surrendered to the advance of chain stores and Amazon, City Lights is a true survivor. Since it was founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1956, it has served as a gathering place for San Francisco’ s literary communities. Everyone from beat poets to left-wing critics of America have found a welcome here. City Lights is also a publishing house, with Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems being perhaps the single most famous book it has put out, though it counts scores of other works by some of America’s leading contemporary literary figures on its list. You can drop in anytime to find an unexpected tome, and the store also has a crowded calendar of readings."

San Francisco is not just about money or dizzying alcohol. At the edge of the continent and the start of the deep ocean, this city harbors layered howls of dark, outlandish, young, queer, urban literary creativity. City Lights is not just a bookstore—it is a bannered Californian museum of intellect. Every squeaky step of its old staircase invites you inward, toward the delicate filament of your not-yet writer self. It’s a deep dive into the inner light of San Francisco.

Google
This is a deceptively large book store, curated with texts that should serve to expand your mind. Lots of history in here. American, San Franciscan, European, world - and not just from the perspective of the victors. Lots of texts of oppression and minority voices in here. Add in some art history, handpicked fiction, classics, and what appears to even be some works published in-house, and you're sure to find something to pique your curiosity.

Google
It’s a peaceful space, with lots of great spaces to take a seat and peruse a good book. The history is pretty phenomenal. They have their own press and I picked up a book that I’m really looking forward to reading. Plus they had nice tidbits mentioned under photos about scenes that had happened within the bookshop.

Google
Is there a very historic bookstore the staff there were very nice and they have plenty of selection of books. The inside is cool with upstairs and downstairs giving different vibes. It’s a must visit in SF.

Google
Fabulous bookstore. I felt seen through the wide selection of South Asian stories and nonfiction choices. Just on the edge of Chinatown, it spans three floors and has books for all ages.

Google
City Lights Bookstore is a must-visit for anyone in San Francisco! Known for its deep connection to the Beat Generation, it houses an extensive collection of works by Beat-era writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, along with an impressive selection across many other genres. The building itself is historic, as it’s where Lawrence Ferlinghetti fought for free expression and famously published “Howl” by Ginsberg. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with three floors packed with books just waiting to be discovered. Truly a literary landmark!

Mariah Fox

Google
Classic SF book store that’s been around for a while. They publish their own books and have new books and classics. Love the recommendations from staff in each section.

Google
Looking for the books that change your life? ..that make you laugh, cry, think, and question your beliefs systems? Look no further. This store isn't just a cornerstone of Beat history in the center of the trendiest part of San Francisco, it's a meticulously managed place to find the literature that will inspire, and make you turn down an outing so you can stay home with your feet up engrossed in the books that you'll never forget.

Yelp
We have been going to this wonderful independent bookstore for years! We come by here every time we make our way into the city. With three levels of books ranging from new fiction, nonfiction, cultural studies, world history, politics, and books specializing in the Beat Generation, there is something for everyone. On our most recent visit, my daughter found a Mike Davis historical book about Los Angeles in the sixties (she wrote a thesis about the sixties in NY so was thrilled to find this one) and my husband found a book by Robin Kelley, a professor that my daughter is acquainted with, about Thelonious Monk. Great purchases! Founded in 1953 and becoming widely known following the obscenity trial after publishing Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems, City Lights was unsurprisingly designated an official landmark by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 2001. If you've never been here, check it out the next time you are in San Francisco! If you are a fan of books, we highly recommend it!

Yelp
For those who love reading like me, this bookstore is undoubtedly an ideal place. It is probably one of my favorite bookstores in the city, with a wide and unique collection of books, each of which can inspire different thoughts and interests. Here, you can discover many books that you may not have come into contact with, broaden your horizons and enrich your experience. The bookstore has three floors with a wide variety of books. The third floor is dedicated to poetry, the second floor is the novel area, and the first floor is mainly non-fiction and autobiography. The layout of each floor is very orderly and memorable, making people completely immersed in the fragrance of books and forgetting the passage of time. I especially like the way the bookstore recommends books. The recommendations of the staff and the "selected recommendations" are very worth referring to. They always bring me new inspiration and depth. If you are keen on continuous learning and thinking, this is definitely a place worth frequenting

Yelp
I like to slide inside this bookstore anytime I am in the border of Chinatown and North Beach in San Francisco. There are lots of books which are not usually at most book stores .You will find a more alternative POV when it comes to book titles at City Light Books. I enjoy browsing and reading different titles at this classic San Francisco bookstore. You can also find a whole floor dedicated to the Beat Poets ( Beatniks) which has some interesting book titles. You can also spend lots of time just looking at all the good books available in all three levels of this place. Come to City Lights to light up your mind to the path of knowledge you embark as your mind sparks Enjoy reading a book at City Lights Bookstore one of San Francisco's Official Historical Landmarks

Yelp
City lights is my fave independent bookstore in the US. It holds such a nostalgia for me and I can spend hours perusing their books. They have curated a great selection of poetry and books on progressive politics and I love the historical significance it holds in the North beach neighbourhood in San Francisco. It was founded in 1953 by Lawrence Ferlenghetti who founded this as a publishing house and bookstore. It was central to the beat movement as a literary meeting place and you can still feel the creativity flow through the stacks. It's a great place to visit if you're in town and they have the nicest staff, with great book recommendations. After, Go across the street to Tosca for a drink after and soak up the North beach vibes.

Yelp
Beautiful bookstore with a good selection of new books, classics, and local authors, amazing many others! I loved browsing and wish I had had room to bring something back as a souvenir!

Yelp
This is by far one of my favorite bookstores in the city. I've been to this place countless times. Bought books several times. Being an activist, an individual who loves history, cultures and humanity, I highly appreciate how preserved, organized and diverse City Lights is. Well, my simple and one review of this bookstore won't give justice as this place is always and forever worth visiting and browsing. For those of you who aren't much aware, City Lights has three floors and banned books. City Lights Bookstore is a publishing company too with diverse and wide selections.
google avatar

Konrad J.

Yelp
I don't really understand the draw of this bookstore other than the names formerly attached to it. It's cramped, there's no used titles, no café, and no place to read. The business, but not the building, has been designated as a historic landmark by the city of San Francisco because of its literary history. That might be interesting to some patrons if they are interested in this bookstore as part of the lit movement, but the store itself isn't worth visiting if you're looking for titles to browse.
google avatar

Yelp
I've seen many photos of City Lights before and was so happy to finally visit last week! City Lights has been a literary meeting place since 1953 and they're also a publishing company. I really enjoyed browsing and was surprised to see even more collections downstairs and upstairs. They have a wide variety of books from all genres, I highly recommend just walking through every aisle so you don't miss out on anything. The prices were pretty standard for the most part, and they also carry signed copies of certain books, which I found really cool. I loved the look and feel of the place, especially with all the rounded archways. It's become my favorite bookstore in SF. If you love books, this is definitely a must-visit location!
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Very small but also cute and interesting. There are also quotes from the famous poets and authors on the ground outside, and paintings of them on the roof. Definitely worth stopping in and seeing this famous bookstore!

Yelp
A super cool spot for all bibliophiles! This independent bookstore has all mainstream sections and books from all around the world, a solid collection of local books, and also super niche genres as well. This 3-storey space is a treasure trove! Be sure to visit every corner. They have the largest collection of poetry books I've ever seen -- head to the very back of the main floor and up the narrow stairs. Steeped in history, you'll find lots of passion for free thinking and speech here. Noting their various posters and postcards pasted all around the shop. And in a back stairwell, post-its from visitors celebrating their 70+ year history. All throughout the store are some seating. You find lots of people milling about. Staff are also in every space, are ready to help and very knowledgeable. I was also happy to see air purifiers in a few of the rooms as well to protect the books and humans. No public washrooms here though, so you'll have to find one in the neighbourhood before your visit.

Yelp
Been dozens of times! Always a treat Always with people I love always with book loving readers who enjoy off the beaten path material. The place is a classic beatnik hot spot and I think it was in a few movies, one for sure with Dennis Hopper but I can't recall it! Wall to wall hippie loving books.... No bathroom but you can find your way to the Nam King 55 feet away for the best Chinese wok food in San Francisco! It's a world renown tourist street you can verify by all the European tourists that found out about it! Take a deep breath of The city right here while looking at the used to be known Pyramid building! Enjoy it. It's all about the food books and drinks in this neighborhood! Review-2. 2024*

Yelp
I don't understand all these reviews where people are complaining about the rude staff. The staff at the counter, two gentlemen, were nothing but kind to me. I bought a book, but more importantly, I bought a t-shirt and you can only get those at the counter. The two gentlemen were quite patient with me as I couldn't decide on what shirt to get and then I was paranoid about sizing. That said, this bookstore is pretty big. There must be at least three floors, including a poetry corner. I do have to say that the organization they have going on is strange to me. I don't think I've ever seen a bookstore that had a section for solely European Literature. That was a bit odd as the books there would typically considered Classics or just be put under Fiction. We're talking the likes of Swann's Way and Crime and Punishment. This organization aside, this is relatively close to Chinatown (one could even argue it is in Chinatown), but apparently Wikipedia says they self-identify as part of immediately adjacent North Beach. Regardless, be careful in this neighborhood, especially at night. A lot of businesses are closed, there are strip clubs nearby, and just some shady people around. Just use common sense. This part of town can be sketchy.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Amazing. They publish too. And they have hard to find titles and will order also. It's like the Powells Books of San Francisco.... (Pacific Northwest folks should get that)
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
I love this place for the homey and adventure-mystery feel you get as you explore the aisles, corners, and levels. They definitely have TONS of older and newer fiction novels, but are lighter when it comes to nonfiction choices. I couldn't find either the business book or the psychology book I was looking for, but I got a button and postcard lol.
google avatar

Dr. Danielle J.

Yelp
I was eager to go to buy books but was rocked by the customer service... thrown extreme attitude for a covered water bottle on a 90 degree day.. meanwhile they let dogs in. Lmao. Maybe someone just got their std results back and was having a crap day? I'm disappointed but I've heard great things! Maybe next time.

Paige M.

Yelp
The customer service was amazing! A worker helped me try and find another copy of a book I wanted because the first copy had a tear in the cover, when we weren't able to find it they gave me the book free of charge which was surprising and very thoughtful. I will definitely be going back in the future and bring friends and family!

Yvonne G.

Yelp
Always enjoyed this place, however, when I came with my daughter they were rude to us. We did come 5 minutes before closing, however, my daughter already knew what she wanted and did not take longer than a minute to get it.No reason to be rude.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Bookstore right in the middle of the city. We were walking around and had heard about this bookstore when planning a trip. Walked right by it so decided to stop. Lots of books on 3 stories of the building. If you are looking for something specific I recommend asking. I didn't really see much area to sit and read at the store. But it was fun to browse and see all the sections.
google avatar

Fiona W.

Yelp
Enjoyed this legendary bookstore's collection and decor and upstairs reading room until I made an (un)known mistake to ask one associate a question - "what if you disagree with Paul on his review. Can you write a dissenting view" and he murmured unwillingly "I don't recall disagreeing or agreeing". I don't even know what that means, and I did buy a book. The 1 star is giving to a perfect Italian sandwich I found after this encounter next door at Molinari.

James E.

Yelp
One of my favorite bookstores in one of my favorite cities. Great selection from the best publishing houses - including their own 'City Lights' publishing. Especially enjoy the European Literature, film, cultural / sociology sections. Also - they have a really vibrant series of author related events.
google avatar

Kassie J.

Yelp
Great selection and wonderful, thoughtful staff pick recommendations written out to help you choose your next title. Too bad the actual staff in person wasn't as interested in helping customers. Checked out with my book tonight and the cashier didn't even turn to me but continued on her conversation with her coworkers (ironically, about writing those staff picks). Told me my total and said "thanks" at the end, so maybe two words total? Can't remember the last time I felt less valued as a customer. So, go there for the selection but maybe don't expect much from the staff (in person)?

Yelp
We were exploring the Chinatown and Little Italy areas of SF when my brother realized we were in close proximity to City Lights. It was on our list of attractions to see while visiting the city, so we thought this was the perfect opportunity to check it out. City Lights has a rich history; it's been around since the 50s, and has regularly hosted artists and activists. Indeed, the top floor of the shop still hosts beat poetry, and I noticed that there was a wide selection of books on topics that one normally wouldn't see in a typical bookstore. Most of the merchandise is either on the first floor or in the basement. Despite its age, the store is kept in great shape; the layout is somewhat compartmentalized which gives way to awesome aesthetics and little nooks where you can browse in peace. Even if you're not looking for a particular book, it's worth exploring the shop - besides the books, they have interesting posters and art on the walls and some other merch like shirts and pins available for purchase. This will definitely be on my list of spots to return to when I go back to SF.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
I stopped by City Lights when I was visiting SF this past weekend. I had visited once years ago, but I'm so glad I stopped by again. City Lights is one of the more famous bookstores in the country, largely due to its and its founders connection to Beat authors and poets. Founder Ferlinghetti launched a publishing house, which published many important works by authors and poets but is most associated with Allen Ginsberg. Aside from its storied history, it's also a great bookstore. So well stocked - both in the sense of what they have on the shelves (I barely made it beyond a single shelf - European literature - before I found several books I wanted to take home with me) and just the number of books they can cram into their small and charmingly cluttered shop! It's definitely worth a visit if you love a bookstore, books, or literary history! A SF classic.

Nancy W.

Yelp
I called City Lights Publishing - a part of the fabulous City Lights Bookstore to inquire about printing of books and when she said they did not print them, I then asked what their publishing services were. The woman who answered the phone was curt and ultimately rude as she hung up on me. Rather than answering my questions re publishing, she said and I quote: "we can't help you." And hung up. Very disconcerting indeed. I really don't expect that kind of treatment at all. She does not truly represent the wonderful book store that City Lights is.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
One of my fav places to visit whenever i'm up in SF. It is literally a book lovers dreamland and they have every genre with multiple copies and translations of most books. This place is rich in history and I love the employee recs and mini descriptions.

Vincent P.

Yelp
This is heaven if you're a bookworm so prepare to be in here for hours. The decors in this bookstore is just chef's kiss. The selection here is great and engaging. Downstairs has a lot of progressive politics and LGBT books along with spirituality and religion. Upstairs is dedicated to beat poetry and literature. They also have postcards of beatniks and San Francisco culture. Also if you're into the NYRB classics there's a whole ton of them to choose! The pricing is just like your average bookstores, some pricey, some understandable. There's merchandise that you can buy as well. Overall I would recommend every readers to visit this bookstore at least once in their life even if it's just for admiring the bookstore and having a book in your hand.
google avatar

Christiane F.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to walk around, browse and spend quality time. Love the layout of the store and the variety it has. The store has so much personality to it and very affordable depending on what you're looking for. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Hubby and I stumbled across this shop after lunch in chinatown. We thought it was cute and had a good variety of books. we didn't purchase anything but it was still a nice vibe and a peaceful moment. Loved the interior design and multiple floors this place has.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
What's better than 3 floors of books...not much that I can think of. This bookstore has everything you could possibly want including a floor completely dedicated to poetry.
google avatar

Cici P. P.

Yelp
Love this place! It's beautiful and iconic. Their staff are bookworms and know their stuff. The passion for literature is palpable in every detail of this bookstore - it's definitely a testament to the store's profound literary significance. Great assortment of books spread over a three-level building. It's a paradise for anyone interested in history, cultures, and the human experience overall. Undoubtedly one of my favorite bookstores in SF.
google avatar

Bethany L.

Yelp
What a fantastic indie bookstore! When I saw it was only a few blocks away from the hotel I was staying at, I knew I needed to pop in! The bookstore itself is crowded and it can be a bit difficult to find the type of book or topic, you are looking for - but it's so charming to be surrounded by dozens of bookshelves. Additionally, the staff are fantastic - I mentioned I loved a certain book and Erin gave me three different areas in the store to look for similar titles. Please support this local bookstore - I wish I could have spent hours browsing!
google avatar

Nadav M.

Yelp
If you like books and some postcards. This place is it. Extra points for being a historical place of a movement. It's amazing to feel the space as it serves its purpose in contemporary times. There's at least 3 floors of materials and most of it is new. There's a few items that are unrelated to book but they don't upstage the place. Service is always at the register and never at all on the floor. Usually it's somewhat simple and very direct place to look for piece of work. The place is very picturesque, especially the ground floor. Don't miss the Jack Kerouac alley right at a stones throw from City Lights. There's a lot of colourful books as you walk gingerly throughout the shop;many are extra stock, the colourful upright and horizontal spines are inspiring. On a personal level my favourite is the basement as there's many cooking, reference, travel, and language down there. Poetry is on the top floor. I love the vibe it gives. An amazing place to discover some radical literature for it's time and still continues to capture its values. Perfect place for book lovers and the alike. Closest MUNI station is the Chinatown station. MUNI buses 8, 8Bx, 8AX, 12, 30, 45 are all easy access to the bookshop.
google avatar

Gennaro M.

Yelp
I love this place. It brings me memory and makes me feel happy. Service it's great, always good helpful. Wide selection. I love to take my kids and review different genre and writer. Found some interesting Italian books .
google avatar

Lexica B.

Yelp
Still cringing hard, after my visit last month, due to an interaction with one associate in particular. Apparently the centuries old art and philosophy I asked about is now (reduced to!) a CRAFT, and they stated very loudly, very many times that "we don't have a CRAFT section!" "we are NOT a CRAFT store!". So sad to work in a store full of awesome books, yet assume the superior stance because, as they said, "i know this. my friend did it". Uh, okay, so I should go to Michael's or Amazon for my CRAFT research then? I sensed I did not fall into the right demographic, therefore my money was not welcome here.. please get a clue! Lesson learned, money spent elsewhere.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
What an incredibly diverse selection! Impressive selection of Asian American lit for adults and kids alike. Really cool collection of graphic novels, also for both adults and children. Felt like a kid in a candy store, thankfully with an adult budget and credit card, lol! Bought just 5 books only because I had a kid in tow who was antsy to grab a milkshake. Every city should be so lucky to have such a bookstore. I'd be here every week if I could. Online shopping is nowhere near as satisfying as browsing a curated selection like this. The descriptions posted for staff picks were hilarious, edgy and super insightful. Staff were also helpful in grabbing the last copy of a novel from their window display for me.
google avatar

Lynn H.

Yelp
Oldest bookstore in the US. Great selection and lots of events. This is their 70th Anniversary too.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
This is an interesting thing to do in SF for its history, plus its super close to chinatown and little italy so you can spend a couple hours in this neighborhood. They have 3 stories so don't forget to check every level! Personally, the basement level was my favorite since it almost seemed like they had closed off areas almost like a speakeasy or hidden library type vibe. Only reason I docked a star is because of the rude customer service. This guy basically said in a super rude tone that we couldn't bring drinks in here (we had boba). Well maybe yall need better signs? Or a better attitude. Either way, I prefer Powells books in Portland more.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
What an amazing bookstore. A total icon of the culture of San Francisco. It sits directly across the street from the beat museum, which also helps you understand why City Lights bookstore has been such an important hub of the growth and diversity of thinking, writing, and sharing ideas over all of these decades in San Francisco. As a creative and business owner myself that helps take authors from idea to book to creating their online course and signature group coaching program, (www.LaunchYourLifesWork.com) it was my first time here and I completely enjoyed getting lost for two+ hours in this bookstore. I look forward to visiting City Lights books again and being part of their following and network.

Kelley L.

Yelp
I had unreasonable expectations of this landmark institution and I don't think there is anyway I could not have been let down. First off, I live in Portland Oregon and we claim Powell's Books as our shining star - the flagship store in downtown is 68,000 square feet, so I was shocked at how small City Lights is! Disappointed that they only offered new books, I'm not a lover of the beatniks but I expected something more subversive with this group a such a big park of their history. The staff book recommendations were STELLAR and that made the experience not a total loss. Come to Portland and see Powell's Books!
google avatar

Erich L.

Yelp
It's a famous bookstore going back to the 60s and they have a counter culture type of attitude. It's not a mainstream bookstore. Plenty of books but they have a limited selection and don't carry everything. I was looking for some specific fantasy books (non political) and they said they don't carry them. I was disappointed to hear that and I am a big supporter of all bookstores and sharing all viewpoints.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
What an wonderful bookstore. Such a departure from B&N or other mainstream bookstores. Expect to find some interesting books that are off brand but worth the read. Great service too all for comparable prices.
google avatar

Deb S.

Yelp
I don't think there is anything I can say here that hasn't been said already. It's cozy and cramped (in a good way) with tons of books and three stories with so many choices for any type of reading you may be searching out. I found new authors, new books, and older materials too. I love independent bookstores and search them out wherever I travel. This one is a famous space for sure, and a true gem for all readers.
google avatar

Brian I.

Yelp
I enjoyed my visit to this iconic, cozy bookstore. There's a room upstairs with a poetry collection, which makes sense since the founder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), was a poet and opened the store in 1953. It's an excellent spot for those who love to read, and for those who don't read a lot, it's still a nice place to visit.
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Must stop if in San Francisco. Best book store in the world we spent as much on books today as we did for our dinner last night. Ferlinghetti forever and always always and forever

What a perfect place! I spent about 2 hours in here just looking for a book and found so much more! The taste in choice of books and authors is refreshing and well thought out. It's also so fun exploring in the store the different genres and store picks! All employees were very nice as well.

Yelp
A literary landmark in the City. If you are a book lover, you must make the pilgrimage to North Beach and visit this gem. Three stories and hundreds of categories, you could get lost for hours. I especially appreciate the Staff Picks and have found some remarkable books I would never have crossed paths with.

Yelp
I'm a huge lover of bookstores. I could camp out in them for hours. This bookstore has so much history to it. It started in the 50's and is located in an old building between Chinatown and North Beach. The building itself is a historic landmark. City Lights is the nation's first all-paperback bookstore. I happened to be visiting SF and stopped in for a quick browse. They have a nice selection of books on history, politics, spirituality, poetry, and culture. I personally enjoyed the film section. Seating here is somewhat limited if you are wanting to hang for a bit. Other than one employee that was a little uptight about things, the staff here was pretty nice. City Lights is a great find and worth a stop in.

Yelp
There are so many attractions when visiting the city by the Bay that some lesser knowns can be overlooked. As the husband of a librarian City Lights was not one I would dare miss. It is both an attraction and an operational bookstore. The store is most recognizable for its Beat movement of the 50's-60's. City Lights Bookstore location is in the North Beach area of San Francisco. My visit was highlighted by the Poetry room with its nostalgic chair by the window. Founded in 1953 by two friends, college professor Peter D. Martin and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, City Lights became a cultural institution for San Francisco's bohemians and literati. It was the nation's first bookstore to exclusively sell paperbacks, many of which skewed toward progressive politics and modern literature. In 1956, City Lights published the seminal poem "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg, whose works defined the zeitgeist of what would later be called the Beat Generation. His collection of poetry unapologetically described drug use and sex. It was seized by customs officials and San Francisco police and became the subject of a lengthy obscenity trial. Just understand if your the nerdy book type that loves the the 50-60's era you must visit. Of course they have current books and periodicals too! Find other cool stores to check out in North Beach as well. Currently due to COVID-19 the bookseller is closed.

Yelp
There's a listing for City Lights bookstore that I check in to and post photos for. I found this listing for the publisher. They publish independently and large scale. They are responsible for the Beat literature history and tradition here in North Beach. Lawrence Ferlinghetti is the owner. He turned 100 last year. This review commemorates the great life of Diane Di Prima, one of the female Beat generation legends and poet. She wrote a memoir of her young adult years in college. She was a local and I saw her recite poetry. She passed at age 86 on October 30, 2020 this year just less than 2 months ago. She will be missed and I only found out because I visited the bookstore. City Lights is legendary for Beat literature and hopefully the tradition will be continued by people like me that care about it.
