The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week | Eater NY

"For a post-party breakfast I went for the corned beef hash ($12.95) and loved it: super meaty with crispy and tender potato bits, runny eggs, and an inspired chive hollandaise; we also shared table pancakes — a classic diner win during the restaurant’s 25th anniversary." - Eater Staff

It was a nice busy diner. Parking lot can get full at peak times but I got a spot real quick. The menu was simple and not as huge as other diners. Prices were a bit high to be honest. 17.95 for each of the dishes in the photo. But service was quick. Nice ambience albeit a bit loud.

A Westchester County staple for brunch! Love their all day breakfast menu. Delicious fluffy eggs and thick cut bacon. Portions are generous and filling. City Limits serves up traditional diner classics at a higher standard. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are a delight and don’t forget their show stopping dessert case! The key lime pie is always a treat. 😋

It was my first time going to this place and I must say the food was great and the customer service was expectional. The diner is clean, big and has a great decor. The staff was very polite and helpful. Overall I would definitely go again and I recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or catering.

This diner is beautiful and clean. We got the calamari which was delicious and burgers. The burgers were freshly made to each persons liking. The patty needed some flavor but it was not the worst. The staff is very friendly and professional. I would go back

My aunt and I decide to come here for brunch. I had a steak sandwich on a cibatta roll with fries it was good! We also had mimosas, they also were delicious. The waiter was great. Big place but we lucked out it wasn’t crowded for a Saturday afternoon. Would love to come back and try other things on their menu. Plus they have breakfast all day.

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of dining at City Limit Diner, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience that compelled me to return three times! From the moment we stepped inside, the welcoming atmosphere set the stage for what would be a fantastic culinary adventure. The highlight of my visits was undoubtedly the food. I indulged in the steak with veggies, which was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and paired beautifully with fresh vegetables. It was such a delightful meal that I couldn't resist going back for breakfast! The breakfast did not disappoint! I ordered the steak and eggs, and it was simply delicious. The combination of the hearty steak with fluffy eggs was a match made in heaven. Each bite was a reminder of why I returned to this gem of a diner. Equally commendable was the service. The staff was attentive, friendly, and efficient, making us feel right at home. Their genuine hospitality added to the overall experience, ensuring we left with smiles on our faces. If you're looking for a place with amazing food and excellent service, City Limit Diner is an absolute must-visit. I can't wait for my next return!

Google
This place surprised me! Everything was perfect. I had the best martini of my entire life- the pear martini. The burger and fries were 10/10. And the apple turnover and chocolate hazelnut tart were divine. The service was friendly and attentive from beginning to end. And the ambiance was more like a restaurant than a diner, which is a compliment! Nicest diner I've been to, probably. This place is awesome and I can't wait to come back.

Google
If you want a great diner with awesome food, this is the place. My husband and I love the food and the service is outstanding. I tried different meals and they were all (oh my goodness) delicious. You must try the bakery shop on your way our. I am on vacation and decided to have a cucumber mary (bloody mary), awesome. The atmosphere, you will feel like you are away. Enjoy.

Yelp
One of the last official diners left in the area. A little overpriced but they have everything you need from egg plates to pasta. I will keep this as my go to place when in the area. BB

Yelp
Okay-food diner that looks pretty nice inside. Service was friendly. Fries were pretty good, but the rest of the food was a mixed bag. The focaccia grilled chicken sandwich sounded good but the focaccia bread was a bit too spongy and soft to properly hold the chicken and veggies. The kid's chicken tenders had way too much breading making them less appetizing. Prices seemed higher than more traditional diners. It was okay for a quick stop while traveling but not one to revisit.

Yelp
I came here for brunch and it was delicious. I ordered the spicy chicken wings as an appetizer. Then I ordered the crab and lobster Benedict which was ok. It came with some potatoes that had chives. I enjoyed the wings they were crispy and flavorful. The blue cheese was also really good and creamy. The eggs Benedict was good and the cake did have some crab, I did not really taste the lobster. I would order another item next time, I saw a lot of pancakes and burgers. While the Benedict was not bad it was not something which was memorable. The egg was cooked well, the consistency was good. I also ordered the hot chocolate which was very good. The service was good; the space is really big so we did not wait for a table. The environment is friendly and inviting. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Second time going here and the food was very good. Asked for a medium steak but it came medium well which is fine. It still tasted great. We ordered several of the crab cakes they were so delicious. The omelette was okay. I usually get a coffee but the cappuccino was delicious. Ambiance is a fancier diner setting. The staff was receptive and friendly. Will come again.

Yelp
We have been coming to the City Limits diner for over thirty years. For many years it was my family's favorite restaurant where we would go for wonderful breakfasts, lunches and dinners. A few years ago we moved from Westchester to Manhattan, however when we're in the neighborhood, we often will come here for a meal since we know their food is always consistently delicious. Yesterday we had some errands to attend to and we came to City Limits for lunch. Although it was Fter two in the afternoon, their large parking lot was filled with cars but fortunately we found a space and given the size of yheir dining rooms we were quickly seated. Ruth was our waitress and we each had delicious salads. What really impressed me was something I never experienced before. We were planning to visit friends and I was thinking of bringing them a large container of chicken soup. When we first walked in to the restaurant, I noticed that in addition to their retail bakery, they had containers of soup for sale. I asked Ruth if the soup was very salty and her immediate response was that she didn't think so but offered to bring me a small sample so I could taste it for myself. Within a few minutes, Rith returned with a small bowl with the doup that was indeed not salty but absolutely delicious. Of vourse we ordered a quart and asked if she could add it to our bill. I assumed Ruth would just get one of the prepared containers from the retail department but instead she returned with a quart of the soup from the chicken in a bag with fresh bread. My friends were delighted with their gift and we were very impressed with Ruth's dedication to providing us with a wonderful lunch and great service.

Yelp
How have I not written a review for this institution??! Been going here for 30 years and it's everything you want in a very nice diner - it's welcoming, cozy, delicious, loving, with the kindest servers and the best City Limits Valrhona hot chocolate, mac and cheese, shrimp wrap, crab cakes, Valrhona chocolate pudding, and middle eastern sampler. Love their egg creams. Have celebrated birthdays, graduations, Christmas Eve, and just an ordinary day here. There's no place like City Limits. 5 stars!!!!

Yelp
I came here for breakfast on a Saturday around 9:30. It was busy, but we were able to get a table immediately without a reservation. They have a pretty good breakfast menu, somewhat similar to a classic diner, but pricier. I ordered the huevos rancheros. The dish was tasty and fresh, and they were able to swap the eggs over easy for scrambled. The portion size was a bit small. My dad had the smoked salmon omelette, which came with multi-grain toast and shredded potatoes. He enjoyed it and had enough for leftovers. They have a large bakery selection in the front of the restaurant so you can buy pastries and desserts without dining in or take something to go after finishing a meal. They have a parking lot with a good amount of space for patrons.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Staff is quick, they turn over tables at a great rate. In terms of diner ambience, this is probably the best you'll find. No 80's lighting, you get more sunlight coming in. I had the Scrambled Eggs and Acai Bowl, both were good. As someone who does not like bananas, they were a bit much in the bowl, but you live and learn. Price is very high though, buyer beware. Overall: 4/5

Yelp
Amazing food and service! I got the city limits burger and it was amazing! The fries were amazing too! The chocolate chip cookie was very good too! Nicandro was an amazing server!

Yelp
Subject: Kindness and Great Service at City Limits Diner Dear City Limits Team, Today, October 7th, my friend and I went for a late lunch at City Limits Diner in White Plains -- one of our favorite spots for a fantastic meal. My friend enjoyed a delicious burger, and I had my all-time favorite, the Chicken Meatloaf. As always, our waiter was friendly and accommodating. After our meal, I was walking to the upstairs restroom. Since I use a cane, one of your waitresses came over and kindly held the door open for me, even reminding me to "remember to lock the door." What a thoughtful gesture! I walked back to my table smiling, and when my friend asked why, I shared what had happened. As we were leaving, two waiters behind the bread area each came forward to hold the doors open for me. These small acts of kindness truly make a big difference. It's this kind of genuine care and courtesy that keeps us coming back to City Limits again and again. Please extend my thanks to your wonderful staff for always going above and beyond. Thank you City Limits Team, James B. Volpe

Yelp
A few new menu items have been added since Covid-times, which is a relief given that this place severely trimmed their menu at the onset of the pandemic. The recent additions include spaghetti and meatballs, breakfast burrito, ham and cheese croissant sandwich, acai bowl, and others. The spaghetti is fantastic -- better than what you may find at a pizzeria; a generous amount of garlic elevates the tomato sauce, and the creamy ricotta on top adds depth to an otherwise ordinary dish. Not to mention they give plenty of meatballs! The breakfast burrito is also solid, but texturally it's a bit of a wet mush. Steer clear of the smoked salmon omelet. The salmon is diced into tiny cubes and the onions would be better if they were caramelized more. Also, the babaghanoush has changed -- it's not very good anymore. Tastes store-bought. Service is always good and the Christmas decorations are iconic.

Yelp
There is a free parking lot for customers of the diner. The entrance has a bakery area for muffins and other treats. We were seated quickly and our service was excellent. My husband remarked on how efficient and on top of managing his area that our waiter was. The food is good. The waiter recommended the gluten free blueberry almond muffin and my husband loved it. The food is pretty good for diner food, the portions were good. I enjoyed the bacon and the potatoes. I thought their hollandaise sauce was quite good as well. This was my 2nd visit and I thought the food was even better this time.

Yelp
Love this place for its quick and convenient service - AND the food is good for a diner. Breakfast is standard - it try the waffles w fruit! Super good. Or the avocado toast! Their burgers & fries are a fav - as is their seafood soup and roast chicken.

Yelp
Another solid lunch here. I surprisingly ordered the chicken burger and my friend ordered a Reuben. I normally get beef, but I was in the mood for something different. I actually had hesitation after I ordered it thinking it might come out very dry. Well was I wrong! This chicken burger was so delicious, flavored with vegetables, and severely juicy. I loved it! The avocado on top was a delicious touch. The Ruben sandwich was equally perfect on toasty buttered bread dripping with cheese and ample corned beef. The french fries that accompanied both sandwiches were so crisp and perfectly prepared. The wait staff was awesome, and very accommodating to all of our needs. It was a really wonderful experience.

Yelp
I went in with my family after a long drive back from Rhode Island. The food and service were amazing. It's also a very clean and spacious diner. I would highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Yelp
My second visit to City Limits Diner was much better than my first. I think it was because I asked my server for advice in what to order. She suggested the soup of the day which was a Chicken Shrimp Gumbo and it was delicious and satisfying while at the same time fulfilling all the needs of "diner soup" (not too spicy, all the vegetable chopped into tiny bits and cooked completely through). But it had enough of a latin flavor to it to feel special. I also ordered the turkey burger with a salad instead of the fries. The bun on the burger had a nice cake-like brioche quality to it. And it came with a well prepared cranberry sauce on the side. The salad was fresh and the lettuce was varied. The beer menu is more adventurous than the wine and I ordered a delicious IPA on draft. For dessert I had the fruit tart, again at the suggestion of the server, and it was a generous portion of glazed fruit that had been fresh when it was prepared sitting on top of a tiny pillow of light custard with a touch of caramel taste to it. The flakey tart crust was surprisingly light but held the delicious fruit and custard mixture in place. And the single espresso that I ordered with it was a real espresso. It is a large place and you might need to flag down a staff member if you need something. But I found the service to be friendly and efficient. Good value at a reasonable price. I will return!

Yelp
I've only been here for breakfast and have never had a bad meal. Challah french toast, lox loaded bagels and orange waffles are all faves. There's never much of a wait, if any, and service is prompt. Iced coffee is hit or miss but when it's good, it's amazing. Employees are pleasant and smile or say hello even in passing. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
City Limits has been around in my home state for years. I've taken family and lady friends here. It's just off of Central Parkway which is the intersection to two worlds whether you're coming from Yonkers or White Plains. This place has become a staple.

Yelp
My review for this diner is simple and short since I've never had anything bad at City Limits. Food and service have always been good. Here, you will find your typical diner food items as well as some yummy desserts. Prices are reasonable and there is plenty of parking.

Yelp
Came here with family after a graduation across the street . Definitely appreciate being accommodated with our big party. We were seated and given menus, bread is given only after request (that should be better communicated prior). Ordered the tropical mojito cocktail that was bright and very tasty. Also ordered the margherita pizza, very flavorful and delicious. Nice, relaxed atmosphere although the staff definitely had a rush due to graduation day; they managed well.

Yelp
I always enjoy dining here. People are friendly and always welcoming! Place is very wonderful. Not too noisy and clean! Food is always on point and portions are perfect. Prices are reasonable and not crazy. They have an abundant variety of dishes all very taste! I will of course continue to dine here!

Yelp
Packed diner on a Monday holiday lunch - lots of folks here. Parking was tight, and the lot had a terrible smell, I think their trash hadn't been taken out and the lid was open, so the smell wafted over the whole area. Inside, clean and simple bakery upfront with a desk, large space inside for seating and a lot of people enjoying food. The salmon benedict was ok; the English muffin was actually quite tough even though I left it for last with the egg and sauce all over it. The calamari coating fell off the calamari and the marinara was ok. The chicken sandwich was good on first bite, but then rapidly revealed an overly charred piece of chicken in most of the sandwich, which was not the kind of flavor I enjoy. Hashbrowns were a square about 3" x 3", and didn't hold together well.. would've been better crisped up a bit more. Ice tea was $7.50/2 cups on the table (apparently a free refill?). Overall service was fine, but food missed the mark for me.

Yelp
The biggest compliment to any business is a repeat customer and I have been eating here with my family for years. The food is consistently fresh, delicious and the atmosphere is family friendly and not pretentious. I've tried most of the dishes on the menu and they are all delicious. My family leans pescatarian so our favorites are the lemon orange waffle, the cod sandwich, shrimp wrap and the crab cakes. The bad--and dare I say grumpy reviews, baffle me. You go to this place on a Saturday or Sunday morning and thank your lucky stars to get a table because there is a crowd and the parking lot is bustling. The wait is usually short though. The food is reliably good at a decent price. That lemon orange waffle is pure magic, with REAL maple syrup! I am a serious foodie and have eaten at great restaurants all over New York and the world--and must confess this is the only diner I have comfortably and consistently dined in. I am happy to have this gem in my backyard.

Yelp
Upscale diner with a full menu. Burgers and fries very good. Breakfast items available all day. Good spot for " breakfast for dinner ".
google avatar

Nancy F.

Yelp
I have eaten at City Limits many times. I have always thought that the food was good-plus. But...recently ordered the chicken salad for lunch. Instead of fresh chicken, it came with chicken deli meat, which was tough and pretty disgusting. I ended up sharing my friend's lunch. I will not be back until the memory of the chicken fades.
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
Very good service. Awesome thick and juicy burger. The corned beef hash was way too dry and flavorless. My over medium eggs were way over cooked but server was polite to replace. Very spacious diner and also very noisy.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
I've been there a couple of times. The service is stellar with a wonderful ambiance. The food is average. I've only been there for breakfast so I have this place 3 starts knowing that there are so many diners that have much better food.
google avatar

Marc K.

Yelp
Very large diner with a homey feel Prompt service No loud crooning or music overhead just a faint volume. Comfy seats with nice cushion and solid backs The fruit was fresh, crisp, and tasty The Caesar salad was plentifully adorned with generous and well cooked and moist chicken The western omelet was perfectly cooked and had more onions (2x) than peppers or ham. It was served with a modest sidecar of fruit. The BLT was a near miss-- the bacon was crumbly and when you chopped into the sandwich it crumbled all over the plate. But for the one or two spears of moist bacon that saved the day and made it a loss but not a fail. The onion rings needed more salt and the crust separated from the onion base too easily so it was more a cooked onion + toothsome crust as opposed to a crispy onion ring.
google avatar

Bryant A.

Yelp
Margarita pizza; Crab Cakes; Penne with Shrimp. Also the Lobster Wontons. All very good.
google avatar

Lita O.

Yelp
I had not visited here for some time, maybe a year, maybe two. Highly disappointed. The service was unfriendly and slow. The food was below average. Had eggs Benedict - very salty and undercooked eggs. The muffin was dry and tasteless. Along with the hash browns, which were chewy, and felt like they had been sitting on a hot plate for a while. Dry and yuk. Although we only there for a while, I felt eyes on me the whole time and we were being rushed out even though the table was not needed. There was no ambience, so we will not return. Such a shame, used to be very good.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The food was very good and the staff was fast a friendly. The place was packed, yet no one had to wait for a table. Everyone was seated immediately and promptly greeted by a server. The only drawback is it's hectic and noisy... I guess that will happen with a packed house. I would definitely recommend based off food and service. If you want quiet, better eat at the library...

Yelp
City Limits always has a great selection for your palate! I have never been disappointed with the food! Word to the wise...you gotta have the French Toast Served with House-made Apple Sauce Raisin & Currant Challah. Get it and share it! The staff here are on the ball with the service! The restaurant is always busy. So the food is always fresh. The establishment is always clean and looks inviting. Keep doing what you've been doing. If you're ever in the neighborhood. GET SOME!!!!!

Yelp
Being new to the area we were looking for a place within walking distance of our apartment. It's now a go-to for breakfast lunch and dinner. Always very consistent with service and food. The waffles are great and love that we can get them no matter what time of day it is. Breakfast for dinner is a really nice option sometimes :)

Yelp
This is an oldie but a goodie. . This great diner has it all, great breakfast lunch and dinner . Fresh coffee and cocktails . The servers / waiters are always attentive and service is exemplary. I be been coming here for years with my children and family and never been disappointed. We have even ordered thanksgiving dinner from here and it was fabulous They excel at customer service and always making the customer feel like they are getting great service . Thank you guys for always doing an excellent job

Yelp
The first star is for the ambience, the second star is for everything else. This used to be a diner. Now, I don't know what it is supposed to be. Stopped in with a friend, it was fairly busy and the lot was full. Figured it must have improved since the last time I was here. NOPE! We both ordered the crispy cod sandwich. When it eventually came the filets were two different sizes. Both paper thin with a lot of breading. The cilantro spread couldn't even be seen there was so little of it. The sandwich is more lettuce and tomato on a thick bun. $16.95 is asking a lot, for so little in return Great if you're a vegetarian. Asked for a little more sauce to make the fish a little moister. That took a while, in the meantime the fish was getting cold. See the photos. The fries were inconsistent; some were nearly raw, others hard as nails and the few big ones were on the top. There were loads of little potato shards in the mix. Again see the photos. None were peeled; I wonder if they were washed first, before they were put through the potato slicer? Looking around at other diners, most were having Breakfast at 2 pm. That should have been a clue. Their food looked great! G-d forbid if you can't use stairs; the bathroom is in the basement. After the food was brought over by another person. You couldn't find our waiter, if there was something else or refill the sodas we might have wanted. Even getting the check was a chore. I went downstairs to the main level with the check and a MOP. I was told the waiter will ring it up. We could have dashed and dined, but that's not us. About 15 minutes of trying to find the guy I gave it to another server : signed, left a tip (I don't know why, but it's traditional), and left. NEVER will I return. Fool me once shame on you...

Yelp
Ben from the Wine Warehouse suggested this local place for a late brunch. After we packed up the wine and champagne bottles, we headed straight to this busy place. We were seated into a corner booth and served right away... pretty amazing given the lively families already digging in. Great service and delicious food. Plenty of free parking. Don't forget to pick up some goodies at the bakery at the front!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing coffee, corned beef hash and eggs, and rice pudding. Great ambience, too, a retro classy look, lots of stone and wood. Warning - they have a pastry display on the way out, you'll likely want something to take home.

Kevin A.

Yelp
Pretty happy with my first visit. Much larger and more attractive inside than you'd guess. Was there on a busy lunch weekday but was seated and served promptly. Food was good, portions too large to finish, and leftovers packaged nicely. It ain't cheap, but it's fair value.
google avatar

Enid L.

Yelp
Very nice upscale diner with delicious food. Crowded even on New Year's Day. Amole parking and lot is always full.
google avatar

Joel B.

Yelp
A favorite of mine for years. Well prepared foods of all types, Italian, deli foods, burgers, and more . . . a good diner to go to eat. I do like their shakes as well. Place is good but beginning to show signs of age ... can use some touching up - - - but don't let that deter you, still looks good and more importantly, clean. Nice little bakery inside as well. My only concern is the staff, young, good intentioned, but really need a more hands on manager to mentor and train them better. Being next to the Westchester County Center means busy, and lot of locals go there as well, so keep that in mind - - - it is big but often busy! Bar is good, but the pours are adequate not generous - - - still they are tasty drinks.

Yelp
Love this place. I've been coming here over 14yrs. It's an Upscale Diner with great food and great service. Wait staff are very attentive. Food is always excellent. Went to multiple restaurants in a day and this was one stop that was a must.

Yelp
Filthy, filthy, filthy. Planned to meet a girlfriend for dinner. Arrived early. Used restroom. Fled immediately and re-directed her to another restaurant. Board of Health needs to make a visit.

Yelp
Arrived and was seated in corner by bar, yet many seatings available in main dining area. Pancakes delivered without butter. Coffee was horrible.

Yelp
We came here to eat after viewing an apartment, I have personally eaten her often. The ambience alone is inviting. I ordered the St. Louis ribs, salmon burger and cheddar cheese burger. Everything was great! The best part of the meal was the interaction with Leon and Alberto! They know the skull for keeping a customer satisfied.
google avatar

Sharon D.

Yelp
It has been many years since I was here and it did not disappoint! Plenty of parking, huge dining room, extensive diner menu, delicious food! Mt daughter had a chocolate shake that she said was the best shake she has had (and that is saying a lot)! We had the shake, avocado toast, a smoked salmon benedict and a corned beef hash with poached eggs. So good! A little on the pricy side, but a solid option!
google avatar

Neenah C.

Yelp
Great food served super fast and with a pre-Covid price point! Sandwiches here are especially good. Yes, some menu items are better than another. If you came here once and thought it was mediocre, give it another chance and try the Grilled Salmon Club or Crispy Cod Sandwich. Order a Coconut Banana Cream Pie for dessert and you will keep coming back for more.

Yelp
We like to balance out negative reviews with positive ones, so since we just posted a negative one on a restaurant in Morristown, NJ, it's time for a positive one. We first became aware of City Limits Diner on an episode of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" with the second appearance of Ricky Gervais on the show. We were scheduled to travel through White Plains anyway, so decided to stop by. A+ in every aspect. Extremely friendly and efficient wait staff without being obsequious. Outstanding breakfast food: real hash browns and amazingly fresh heuvos rancheros with amazing flavor. Great toast, well toasted. Superior sausage link. Bacon & ham didn't quite keep up -- still good. Kitchen staff is not just mailing it in. Kudos. Owner should consider handing out some bonuses here.

Yelp
One of our favorite local restaurants eateries for lunch. The Honey tells me she loves the Oriental Chicken Salad. (She prefers it with romaine lettuce instead of the mixed field greens.). The dressing is flavorful, the grilled chicken is generously portion and well cooked, the taro strips crunchy. I prefer the Country Breakfast - scrambled eggs (or cooked to your liking) bacon, sausage and Canadian Bacon. Delicious! And the coffee is excellent too. We keep saying we should have dinners here - will report when that happens.
