Street-style tacos with creative salsas and unique fillings

"Taco Tuesdays are wallet-friendly at this taqueria, where nearly all of the tacos are under $5. Founded by Mexico City native Gerry Torres, City Tacos opened its first neighborhood shop 10 years ago in North Park before branching out to seven additional locations, including the recent OB Playground in Ocean Beach. Traditional taco highlights include pollo asado and slow-cooked pork carnitas while the house favorites range from the Mexicali with Angus steak, poblano peppers, and mashed potatoes dressed with crema fresca to the Scallop Dreams — scallops flambéed with a pepper cream and crowned with Mexican squash. On Tuesdays, all food is 10 percent off and Mexican beer is priced at $2.50 in all locations, and at the OB Playground, Mexican tap beer goes on sale for $5.50." - Roxana Becerril

"Founded in 2014, I found that City Tacos is a popular Mexican outfit operating six locations across San Diego County, including branches in North Park, Encinitas, La Mesa, and the East Village. Its broad taco menu highlights house favorites like chorizo asado and camaron enchilado, pulled pork with Mayan achiote sauce, chile relleno, and the classic carnitas and carne asada." - Candice Woo

"I visited the newest City Tacos outpost in Encinitas where, alongside their signature tacos, the menu includes added items like ceviche, tostadas, and a vegetarian rice bowl." - Keri Bridgwater

"Make Salsa Not War," reads a neon sign inside the Encinitas outpost of City Tacos, a wildly popular fast-casual taqueria chain in San Diego that blends street-style taste with hipster vibes. Tacos form the core of the menu, and the interpretations here are mostly classic with some gourmet twists (think fried leeks and cilantro drizzled strawberries). We love the Borrego (pulled lamb with wild mushrooms), the Chile Relleno (with gooey Oaxacan cheese), and the Birria de Res (inspired by the traditional beef stew)." - Archana Ram

"City Tacos is another venue contributing to Encinitas' burgeoning dining reputation." - Candice Woo
