Natalie's review below is very accurate, the decor theme is Scandinavian furniture -minimum security federal prison cum art school graduate student exhibition. Grand Rapids is the most suburban strip mall major city in the Midwest, so there are lots of bland chain motels and hotels, whether or not they are near the airport they have that airport motel ambiance. Then there's the historic Amway Grand (where in ancient times we had our wedding rehearsal dinner), elegant, classy, and overpriced. There isn't that much else, so we were elated to find this unique, clever if slightly claustrophobic little boutique hotel. The closest thing we've experienced was a boutique hotel in San Francisco, we love this place. First, it's so artistic in a clean, minimalist way, the bathroom could be displayed in a modern art museum. Love the shower, a lot like getting clean in a brand new aquarium tank. The bed just so comfortable, the lighting actually fun to play with. Plenty of plugs for charging the suddenly necessary electronics for 21st century living and traveling. We didn't have a nice view, but without the windows facing the brick walls, the room would have been too claustrophobic. Nice friendly bar, the service here is very good. I like how they don't speak in scripted corporate fake-nice pseudo-English, instead they were sincere, competent, and helpful. The work distribution is strange, the young lady working the front desk is also the concierge and the coffee barista, but she worked this long 8 hour shift, and because we kept coming and going, and asking her questions each arrival and departure, I can say with certainty, she somehow efficaciously juggled accurately answering my questions, the phone for reservations and directions, checking in guests, making and serving espresso, and fielding calls from guests in rooms. All the workers were similarly skilled in what I thought was excessive multi-tasking demands, the crew here is much better than the usual hotel staff found in chain hotels.
Parking next door at $16 (with in out privileges) is actually a fair deal for downtown Grand Rapids. The hotel is very conveniently located, walking distance to a number of good restaurants, cafes, Kendall Art College, Kalamazoo Community College, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum (which I recommend, very nice little art museum). You get a free pass to MVP Club health club, less than a block away which is actually a lot better than having a small awkward limited hotel workout room. We walked to Reserve restaurant for dinner and were happy with that choice.
The hotel is mostly green, but like all the hotels I've stayed in trying to be eco-friendly and environmentally responsible, there's some inconsistency here. The air conditioning energy was partially wasted as they needed to keep the front door ajar to let in some fresh air and to hear the cafe patrons sitting outside. It wasn't convenient to take the stairs instead of the elevator (key card locked for the guest floors, good for safety and security, not so good for eco-friendly and healthy stair climbing). I couldn't figure out where to recycle my aluminum pop can, and I don't think the roof is green.
If you're just going to stop in Grand Rapids briefly, and just need a room to sleep in, then this might not be worth it, but if you're spending any time in the area, and would like a unique hotel with personality and artistic style, I recommend this boutique hotel, we really enjoyed ourselves here. They have a nice ballroom, and judging by the staff we met, I think this would be a great place for special event.
