This was a super cute, clean hotel downtown! A group of us came up to celebrate my birthday. The room was nice and open, and the bathroom was clean and spacious. It was walking distance to everything we wanted to do that evening. When it came time for sleep, the beds and blankets were super comfortable. Abby, at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. She gave some suggestions on where to go and accommodated getting an extra key when needed. She also brought up the fridge when we got a surprise upgrade. We'll definitely be back to this hotel if we're staying up in GR again!

Stayed here for the Michigan Music Conference. Check in was quick and easy. The room was clean and had everything I needed. The bed and pillows were very soft, but I was not bothered. It was very quiet during my entire stay. There was one window with a view of a brick wall, but I was not bothered by this either. Walkable distance to the Amway for the conference. Check out was quick as well. I really liked that they have sustainable products and practices in place. I loved having a recycling bin in my room :)

Hotel isn't bad, it's a minimalist hotel and I knew that going into booking. The location is ideal to all things downtown Grand Rapids. |Room was very clean, decor was very minimal along with beds, bathroom, etc. With that being said we slept well, and we were comfortable. |Front desk staff was very nice, bartender was friendly.|Parking is dicey. We parked on the street, was our cheapest option, but we had to keep feeding the meter.

I was looking to book a reservation for a family wedding. I called and talked with reservations which was through a different company-I was told the reservation block for the wedding was expired-I was told to call and have the block renewed and we would be given the wedding block rate. After the block was renewed I called the hotel back and talked with Brandon who advised me he was the assistant general manager. I explained to him that I had booked the reservations for 3 rooms but I was told to call back to get the updated price for the room. Brandon quickly told me that the price was the same. I tried explaining to Him that I talked to Jason and was told that there was a different price for the room block. If not why would I request for the room block renewed. Brandon was extremely rude and unprofessional. I asked to talk to the general manager the general manager called me back and told me that Brandon told her that I said he wasn’t smart enough to be a general manager and that I cursed at him. None of those things happen and I wish City Flats would play the recorded line back. I canceled the reservations and am happy I did because I heard the rooms were terrible-ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Rude and unprofessional staff!!! I would never give this place any money!!! The female general manager without even listening to me was extremely short and unprofessional-TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE FRON BEGINNING TO END. So many other beautiful hotels in Grand Rapids find somewhere else!!! PLEASE PLAY BACK THE RECORDING OF THE CONVERSATION!!! Then let me know when I mistreated staff!! Unbelievable!!!

The rooms are small and dirty. My fitted sheet was too small so it kept popping off and exposing multiple piss stains. Dirty bedside tables, dirty table, fingerprints on everything. There was a stained white quilt on the bed with no cover, just a sheet folded over it. Bad experience all around

Google
We just stayed here this last weekend. Great downtown location. Within walking distance to any main venue downtown. Room was small, but we were only sleeping there, not hanging out. Front desk was super nice. Only complaint was there were only 2 bath towels in the room, no wash clothes. Also I LOVED that we needed a key card to use the elevator, so it felt very safe.

Google
We reserved two rooms for January 23, immediately realized our error and called the hotel back to change the date to the 25th. Somehow the reservationist left one room reserved for the 23rd and put us in for one room on the 25th. When we tried to check in on the 25th we were told there was only one room. The rooms manager said he could clean another room for us but then changed his mind. He seemed very out-of-sorts and appeared to have just cleaned a different room. We did not see any housekeeping personnel in the building. |We had planned a great event with Moulin Rouge tickets and dinner but had to drive home instead. |The rooms manager said he would refund the 23rd reservation since we were a “no-show” . It was not a great experience. Mistakes happen, but management can usually make things right. Not this time, I’m afraid!

Google
Hotel on the river with not a single view of the river, window pointing to buildings of apartments and offices, was told that was one of the good rooms. No hot tub or pool, or bath tub to relax. The hallways to the rooms felt like a prison, all Grey n gloomy and cold. No carpet in any of the rooms or anywhere in the hotel (i asked)... winter outside with wet dirty boots= cold feet the whole time or keep boots on in room whole time..no rug, had to use bath towels... they should have carpet at least around the bed. Hotel was newly renovated, I imagine for the purpose to line pockets more cause everything but paint and walls were cheaply done. Made money on the paint job, 7 different colors and a wall paper in our super small room i think, with stand up shower that had black mildew and orange soap scum in grout and seals. As much as this Hotel charges for 1 single night (our wedding anniversary) we thought it was going to be the bomb! But a mini fridge was an extra charge. With a cheaper hotel at least I know to expect let downs and can prepare for them, most likely with cleanliness or the bed... idk. The bartender even ignored us, there were only 2 others at the bar. A simple acknowledgment would have been nice, but someone from somewhere else had to come and get ice for us, oh yea no ice machines. This place im sure is great for events that need the salon and ballroom and then a room to rest after such an event cause everyone had been drinking. It was a terrible choice for our anniversary night.

Yelp
Needed a place downtown on a Thursday night for a show that was close. Just me, no guests. Room was small but very slick, kinda like something you'd find in New York. Small, pricey, but worth it. Staff was friendly enough, place was clean. No real complaints. Scratching my head trying to figure out why the place isn't rated higher. I'm guessing families of four or more aren't exactly comfortable here, or maybe there's just another section of rooms that didn't get the renovated love mine had to have gotten at some point. Literally the only problem I ran into was being hounded for money by vagrants (obviously homeless) and beggars (obviously NOT homeless but just looking for their sob story to stick) out in front of the building. If you're traveling/walking alone keep your head on a swivel and move pre-emptively to avoid this crap. Other than that, I can see myself staying here again if I'm in the area. Slightly upscale, hipster, perfect for single adults or couples that wanna be near an otherwise neat area of the city with nightlife and events.

Yelp
When I checked into my room a hotel employee was "inspecting" the room. He left dirty foot prints and dirt in the room. The bathtub smelled of cleaning chemicals and it took me several minutes of rinsing to get the water to run clear. The furnishings look like they were bought in bulk from a closed hospital. There was no carpet or rugs so noises echoed and people in neighboring rooms could be heard through the walls. The bed was fine. Overall it was an unpleasant stay.

Yelp
Worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Very unwelcoming young woman upon check in at 5pm on Friday April 5. Specifically, poor customer relationship skills (lack of warmth, smile and communication skills). We asked for an upgrade upon checking in,And she did not even know what that was. Very limited amenities at this hotel, no resturant, tiny room (room 507) , the only chair being one at small desk in front of TV, shower doors leak water all over floor due to inferior shower design no matter how you position the shower head, thermostat was unreliable. We had to place our luggage on window sill. One hanger in closet, Very poor lighting although they provide low wattage lamps. All for $200 including taxes. Never again.

Yelp
Got this hotel for a couple nights via hot rate on Hotwire.com. Cute little hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. Great location. However our room looked like a prison cell with one tiny window up on the brick wall. You can hear everything!! They really need to sound proof these walls and ceiling. We were on the inside not facing traffic so we didn't have any issues with that but someone for over two hours was putting away something maybe tables but good gawd I thought they were in our room. We didn't spend much time in the room. Found parking on the street the first night and parked in garage the second. Walking distance to lots of restaurants and arena. Would I stay here again, couldn't say for sure. So after being unable to sleep because of the excessive noise I called the front desk, found out it was the elevator! Being a Saturday night it was in constant use. They put us in another room on same floor away from the elevator. It was the nice room with a king size bed, huge bathtub and walk in shower, the room I was expecting due to the pictures. So at 2am we moved rooms, they let me keep the other room key so we didn't have to pack everything up just took what I needed. They also gave us a an extra hour to check out. Still the walls were pretty thin, could hear all the traffic outside but definitely nice they gave us another room only wish I would have not waited so long to call.

Yelp
What in the linoleum floor, closet sized room did I just walk into?! Not only is the inside signage non existent, ie no labels of what location is on which floor like the ballroom or the gym or anything else,, but if you're in the lobby and you have to go to the restroom before your room is ready you need to go to the basement, which looks like a dungeon. You can't miss it though! It's right next to the janitors closet. Husband and I have stayed at other hotels downtown Grand Rapids that were beautiful. Not sure who Cityflats designer is, but they should be fired.

Yelp
rude guy working front desk no parking provided by hotel rooms are just ok No pool

Bev J.

Yelp
Room ok , bed very soft, great shower convenient location . Parking structure attached $48 for less than 24 hrs as over 2 days .. ridiculously expensive, no breakfast, bar closed early $225 for 1 night mid January & $48 parking - not worth the money

Yelp
We enjoyed our one-night stay at CityFlats. It's located in the heart of the downtown area and is in walking distance to many restaurants. The suite room was spacious and modern. Some features were large window that had a remote control to lift and close the blinds, rainfall shower, and LED bathroom mirror. The bed was comfy and sheets were soft, but pillows were way too soft for my preference. Check-in and check-out was easy and we received great service. When checking in she noticed when handing us our room cards that we were in the wrong room, so she quickly fixed- attention to detail to double check before the issue occurs. There is a bar inside but was closed when we got back around 10, but it looked like a nice area. They do have snacks, water/gateroade, and fresh baked cookies to purchase in the lobby. The Monroe Center parking garage is connected to hotel but not affiliated, so no parking validation. For one night it was $16. It's nice to be able to walk out easily to the parking garage from the hotel, but you can't go from the parking garage to the hotel through the door since they don't own it - the door is completely locked. You have to use the skywalk to go in between the hotel and comic store which will bring you to the front of the building.

Yelp
We were pretty disappointed with our stay at City Flats - Grand Rapids. We stayed here for a wedding on Halloween weekend so I assumed the price would be a little higher for that reason. Our room was extremely noisy - paper thin walls so we could hear our neighbors talking and the windows are not good so we heard traffic all night. For $350/night, the accommodations were very cold and underwhelming. The room had a cheap, Ikea-decor feel, but the beds were comfortable. As a hospitality professional, though, I want to recognize that their staff was wonderful and all of the food was delicious overall.

Amber M.

Yelp
The online pictures are SO deceiving. This hotel is very small and not very accommodating. The rooms are very small, they don't even have a mini fridge. There was a coffee machine however it wasn't stocked fully and had no stir sticks. Definitely over priced for a hotel with no pool, no breakfast, and no coffee.

Mina M.

Yelp
The best part of this hotel is the people who work there. They were nice and brought us stuff to the room quickly like more towels or the extra cot/bed. The bridal party stayed here for a couple nights, some rooms were better than others. The room I had was on floor 2. There was one window which let in very little light, making the room extremely dark. We felt like we were in a basement and called it the dungeon all weekend lol! The AC did not work and the room was so very hot. There was no fan in the bathroom, which made the room humid after someone took a shower. Double beds are very small, I should've paid attention that they weren't queen sized beds. The walls and floors were VERY thin, all we heard the entire night and morning were the people above us stomping around, and their toilet flushing. On the bright side of this stay: the bathroom was really nice, and the beds and pillows were pretty comfortable. And the hotel was walking distance to a great food and bars!

Yelp
Stayed here for a quick 2-night weekend getaway to GR. Overall it was a nice experience but given the options that I have in GR I don't think I'd ever come back. Here's why: 1. No Carpet - all of the rooms are without carpet. Which some people might like but personally I felt like when dirt would get tracked in that it just spread out to the entire place. Also, it didn't help with noise. Because the rooms are smaller, echos in the rooms are louder and without carpet to muffle the sound it just felt like an echo chamber at times. 2. The room layout was highly inefficient. It seems like the rooms were converted apartments and therefore the space layout was not ideal. Nearly half of the space was not usable because it was a wrapping hallway to the bedroom area. It made the room seem small and cramped. It's possible that the total sq-ft of the room was similar to other hotels, but because the layout was so poor it felt much smaller. 3. This could possibly be just my room, but literally the entire stay I heard toilets flushing from the room directly above. And it wasn't faint either, it was very loud and distracting. Also a little unsettling. Certainly didn't help to make me feel comfortable while sleeping being constantly reminded of how close in proximity others were, or that they could potentially hear me. For these reasons, I'm not planning on returning to CityFlats.

Kris T.

Yelp
Easter Brunch was incredibly lack luster. The pastries and muffins looked like they were left over from a continental breakfast at a cheap hotel. The food in general was nothing special. Our server was removing our water glasses and plates before we were finished. We were the last seating of the day so I'm guessing he was ready to end his shift. Then on departing we saw a HUGE 3-4 inch cockroach on the floor near our table. When I notified the hostess I was told, "That happens." Not where I've ever eaten!?

Kelli D.

Yelp
I have stayed in the hotel before and not had the same issues as this time. The front desk clerk was rude and not inviting. The room was clean but very dark since the window led out to a brick wall with a small opening. The room was very loud- a constant clicking all night and a sound of water being poured which sounded like from inside the wall. We were up all night! Beds were also uncomfortable. Location is great to nice restaurants. Parking was $46 since the "day" resets at 4am so you get charged to two days for one night. Will look elsewhere next time.

Kris M.

Yelp
I travel to Grand Rapids a significant amount. I recently changed my hotel of choice from Amway Grand to you. On this visit I was surprisingly upset. On Saturday between 11:15am and 1:45pm someone entered our room and stole from us. My friend had brought 4 small bottles of wine, but there were only 2 when we returned from lunch. After checking the room we did not find any other items missing. We also noticed that the used towels had been changed out, but the bed was not made. We made a joke about it at first, even leaving the other two bottles when we checked out this morning. But the more I think about it, the more it upsets me. While I know it would be our word against your employees, I thought it would be important to inform you of this theft, so it can be addressed if you have others reach out. Because of this experience I am not sure I will return to your property. Your disappointed guest, After sending this a week and a half ago via email and their automated survey, I have received no response.

Kasey W.

Yelp
We stayed at the City Flats hotel on New Year's eve and we were very disappointed in our stay. The person at the front desk was not very friendly. The bartenders were nice, but the bar closed too early (9pm on New Year's eve). The rooms are very dirty (please see the attached photos taken inside our hotel room). I'm giving 2 stars because at least the hotel was in a good location.

Bill D.

Yelp
I would look around and compare. We stayed here on a Saturday night. You pay for the location. There's nothing special about this hotel. The room was clean and the staff was friendly enough. Add another $40 to your bill for parking. There's no price break on that from the hotel even though the walkway leads right into the hotel lobby. The walkway between the garage and the hotel had a homeless person camped out for the night when we got back from dinner. We stayed at the city flats somewhere else and it was much nicer. Holland I think.

Michael C.

Yelp
They advertise $24 parking but it's $48. Had no cups, no coffee and coffee machine dirty from last guest. No way to contact front desk as phone didn't work. I left my iPad and was in town for another 4 hours but they did not call me and now I'm back at home 2 hours always when I ask why they didn't call it was "OH" same response I received from parking complaint. Just not worth the money , not even close.

Joe V.

Yelp
Place has gone downhill. AC doesn't work in room. Called front desk and was offered a fan. We paid twice as much as we originally intended so we could stay at a "nicer" hotel downtown. Really wish we would've picked the cheap ass place out by the airport that got solid reviews. Housekeeping slamming the door next to us. Over and over and over. Then knocks on our door and when we let her know we were still in the room (with another night to stay) she legitimately asked if she could enter the room to clean while we were in it. W. T. F. Paying for parking. Dirty room with drips and what appears to be blood on the wall. 5 stars for the location. Negative 5 stars for everything else. Contemplating relocating for our second night in town.

Yelp
Super hip Grand Rapids, part deux. Just down Monroe Mall from the GRAM, art museum, right in the vortex of what is a newly revitalized Grand Rapids, is CityFlatsHotel. Wow, what has happened to Grand Rapids? Seriously. The city has become super hip and cool in just a few short years. CityFlatsHotel is an essential part of that cool vibe they have going. I've stayed here a few times and have really enjoyed it each time, especially staying in a room Monroe Center side, waking up to the early-morning buzz of the city waking up. Hotel staff is welcoming and warm. They work hard to make your overall experience the best it can be. This boutique hotel is within walking distance to everything you need and want to go to while in Grand Rapids if you're looking to have a great meal, check out all mediums of art, walk along the Grand River, participate in a conference, workshop, concert, or sporting event, savor excellent locally-crafted beer, experience a thriving, welcoming upper Midwestern city. Grand Rapids is growing up.

Sally P.

Yelp
The least I expect from a hotel is that it be clean. City flats did not meet the mark. The bathroom had multiple spots with hair and grime. A quick check of the bedroom floor didn't suggest it was any cleaner - just a darker floor that made it harder to spot. Bed was soft and room in interior of building was quiet. But I wouldn't recommend or return.

Chris V.

Yelp
If you're looking for plush luxury, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for modern and trendy, book it. This is a smaller hotel that doesn't offer a lot of extras. Small lobby with a check-in desk and bar. Rooms were quite small with just enough room for the bed and a small desk; no dresser, no refrigerator, or other amenities. Good location downtown Grand Rapids that connects to a parking garage. Staff was helpful and courteous and bed was extremely comfy.

Ken A.

Yelp
Love the City Flats! This place has an upbeat modern decor with the urban visitor in mind. Located in a great central area of downtown Grand Rapids. You are in walking distance of everything tourist and stumbling distance back from the bars. Parking for the place is around the corner at a discounted price during your stay. The rooms were clean and the designers made great use of the smaller space. Two of us shared a room comfortably. My bed and linens were super comfy and didn't make me itch.

Annette J.

Yelp
First--I was really excited to stay here. I'd walked by the hotel several times and was impressed by the cool looking lobby and its location. Sadly it didn't live up to expectations. I've come to realize that "boutique" = "tiny" so I was expecting small when I went into my room. Sure enough, this room is teeny. But I can live with that. Unfortunately that's not exactly where the disappointment ends. It's also VERY dark. Apparently the commitment to eco-friendly also means only two low voltage lamps and one sconce. It's good for night when you're trying to unwind but sad if you want some light. My window pretty much looks out onto a brick wall so not much natural light coming in either. Also, no amenities. Nothin'. I get it's eco-friendly and all but can't a girl get a coffee maker up in here? Not even a mini bar for late night munchies? A bottle of water (I'll recycle! I promise!) or a tube of lotion? For almost $200 a night I would like the option of a $7 bag of trail mix. Or some fair trade coffee in a biodegradable cup? I'm pretty darn earth friendly but for the amount of money they're saving on utilities they could hook us up with SOMETHING and still keep in line with their mission. Maybe a bamboo robe? A rug of recycled materials under my feet? A small Dagoba chocolate bar? Dang. Apparently the coffee is served in the hallways but I don't think anyone wants to see me all puff eyed and bed-headed roaming the hallways looking for a cup in the morning. That sight is not earth friendly. Plus--no fitness center. I don't remember the last time I went to hotel that didn't have one. There is not a treadmill or some free-weight in sight. It was my bad since I misread the website when booking and thought this location had one. Turns out it's only the Holland location. So I'm sitting here penning this review in my workout clothes with nowhere to go. Sadtrombone.com. Additional cons: -No information about the hotel provided whatsoever in the rooms. All you get is a menu and the channel guide. But I guess there isn't much to share? But maybe some bathroom instruction? The toilet is one of those sleek water saving deals with two flush buttons based on....what you do. But there's no direction on which button is for what. I ended up pressing both just to find out which is which (that isn't doing much to save water!) and I couldn't tell a difference between the two. *Kanyeshrug* -There are these cool little spots on the desk and night stand called "Powerkiss" wireless charging stations but again--no information or instruction about them whatsoever. Curious, I tried laying my phone on it in different positions but no dice. Ultimately I googled the damn thing and found out I needed an attachment to plug into my phone to get it to charge on that spot wirelessly. A cool concept but not one I that I (or most people tbh) can take advantage of. No info on their website that this is something they offer either to plan ahead. - Room layout is weird. Lots of odd parts of the wall stick out and make no sense. TV is mounted in an odd spot on the wall relative to the bed where you'd be watching it from. Also everything in there feels kind of low rent. The furniture is modern but chipped and scuffed and the shelving looks like particle board. A cheap white gauzy curtain hides the "closet," no dresser or shelving to unpack your clothes in if you're staying a while, 4 mismatched coat hangers in the "closet," etc etc. -Only one load-in spot in front of the hotel. Luckily I snagged it so check in was pretty easy but if you're new to the area and don't know where the parking is it will be a serious pain to check-in. But, it's not ALL terrible. A few pros: -The beds are REALLY comfy. The pillows are nice and fluffy. The sheets feel great and my room, unlike others who have reviewed, is extremely quiet. - The whole space is clean. The bathroom is pristine and the shower is pretty cool. The air feels crisp and purified. - Aforementioned eco-friendly status. Aside from the low light it's kind of cool that they're so committed to it. I'll give them snaps for that. - There's a great looking bar/restaurant downstairs and they offer room service (which I didn't order but the menu looks ok?) - Really nice staff. Like REALLY nice. Good people here. - It's secure--you have to use your room key to take the elevators up the rooms. - Parking is convenient and cheaper than other hotels in town. - Excellent location. - Continental breakfast is included? Haven't tried it to say if this is a pro or con yet. ;) So yeah. For one night I can live with it. And I might come back again if I get a really good deal (like $130 is probably my max here) but not for what I paid this time around. Not worth it, really.

Kevin K.

Yelp
I stayed at the City Flats in Holland. The one in Grand Rapids was a disappointment. The bed was great but the room? Well, no dresser, chairs are low grade, housekeeping did a crappy job restocking the coffee and there were crumbs on the floor. No place to get a breakfast, on and on. I will not be returning

Erika R.

Yelp
Stayed here for 2 nights for work. PROs: Right in the heart of downtown - great location, wonderful front desk service and nice rooms. The lobby restaurant has a good vibe, good food and decent happy hour specials. The bed was comfortable and love the raindrop showers. Very trendy and eco-friendly. Love that it is LEED green building certified! They have a 24 hour gym onsite. They are also right next to the river which has great running paths. CONS: However, don't stay in room 2009 - the tunnel right next to the window creates such noise! I could barely sleepy. I brought it up as an issue after the first night I stayed. We thought in was the mini fridge, so they removed it. They also had maintenance come to my room to see how they could reduce the noise. It was still noisy the second night I stayed! The tunnel creates such noise with the wind and amplifies any sound created! I imagine I'm not the first person to make this compliant, I wish they warn people before hand or lower the price of this room. Also, after they cleaned my room the first night, they never replenished my towels or toiletries, and I couldn't call the front desk, so I had to run down and wait for these. Hotel parking was difficult to find. I went around for 15 minutes. I finally had to go down and ask how to find parking as no one was manning the front desk - I believe they're able to keep their prices affordable by having a lean staff. Overall, glad I went and am on the fence whether I plan to stay there again... especially if I would like to get some sleep!

Yelp
I think my first interaction with the CityFlats Hotel wasn't the best from the get-to. When a downtown hotel doesn't have valet, or at least, clearly marked directions to self parking or a garage - you hope that's not an indication of the remainder of your stay. But as the first impression, I was already a little perturbed as I searched and paid for metered parking on the street. At least I had a simple carry-on bag to carry from the car to the Hotel's entrance. I could be completely off-base, and the parking was right in front of my face the whole time, however when it takes about 10-15 minutes to find while you circle blocks downtown, you figure it's a lost cause and it's just as easy to park on the street. Although short, the transaction with front desk was pleasant enough. There is a small bar in the lobby that seemed to be pretty popular with what looked like locals and visitors alike. I must admit, I was only visiting for a less-than-24-hour trip, so I didn't have the opportunity to really take advantage of all the hotel's amenities. I did, however, have enough time in the room to make an assessment. It's interesting. I really didn't mind the strange, dorm-room-like layout. It was almost as if I was in a NYC studio apartment. The windows overlooked an air-conditioning shaft and the brick wall of the adjacent building. The two beds were almost closed off from each other as if the designer of the room was trying to created the effect of two different bedrooms in one room. And although, dark with low ceilings, the design was modern and cool. But then I encountered the hair...the hair on the towels. And in the shower. Followed by the non-working television. And decided from there, that this stay at the CityFlats was A-OK. I slept fine, but made sure to not use the towels.

Yelp
As a Yelper it's my "honest neighbor" duty to tell ya how I see it. Via the interweb , City Flats appeared truly lux, and posh and I couldn't wait to book. My husband even afforded us a second night to really get the feel of it. We arrived fairly late, 11pm and the lobby also serves as a bar so check in felt like waiting at the hostess stand at a restaurant. We chose the nicest room we could get that was available. Ours was the King Suite, and walking in it felt promising. There were two wallpapers and five paint colors in our space. Beautiful wood tables and features, plenty is seating. Window treatments were electronic, plenty of lighting and a spacious feeling to the room. Very modern, still felt lux at this point. I got ice down the hall but there was no mini fridge in the room, so don't expect to keep things cold. We filled the small trash bins with beer and ice and it started feeling less lux. The seal on the shower door was peeling off, lots of dust bunnies around perimeter of room, and the wood panel had fingerprints that could be seen in the light. The water closet had no vent system... why not??? The linen was white, unfortunately there were small stains, ample amount of soft pillows though. My husband found a dollar in our room, I found a Snickers wrapper. This dingy feeling continued the next day throughout the hotel. The corridor to the parking garage could use a pick me up and the doors needed a good scrubbing and paint. The coffee bar consisted of a carafe and to go creamers. Online info states kitchen hours, I called before 11pm on the Saturday night and they were closed. This hotel could be a real contender, but it won't last five years if they don't put some care into it now. I feel like the staff treats it as a rental property, uncared for. We chose this hotel over the other grand hotels in the city because of the modern design. Never did we feel like guests that were being taken care of. Could've had a nicer feeling at a hostel. If we had one more night to stay, I would've chose elsewhere. I hope management takes note of my review and acts swiftly.

Yelp
Let's start with the staff at the hotel was nice. Unless you like a small Ron with a bed and a bathroom. With a view of a wall with garbage in it. Then this place is for not for you. No where to pull-up and check in. No clear direction of where to park or once you do park where to go. Also we got the beer city package. None of which was in our room when we got up there. We left without even staying the night. Couldn't even be in there for more than 10 minutes. Thanks but no thanks.

Yelp
After normally staying at the Holliday inn downtown, we decided to try this place out on our annual art prize trip. I'll start with the pros: -The location is excellent for most walking through city center. -Very hip decor inside the entire hotel and room. -Staff was very courteous (especially the bartender!) Now for the cons: - They do not have parking nor do they validate, resulting in a 20$ a day parking. - The lighting in the room while nice, had its problems. When we turned on a light near the bed every time we turned a light on the to the bathroom. - the bathroom sink was clogged upon arriving. I Informed the desk, but for the entire 3 days we were there, they never fixed it. - While a personal preference, the pillows were far to large and fluffy to use. - They do not have a refrigerator or a microwave in the room. For a city of beer this was a deal breaker. Personally I will go back to Holliday inn or try another hotel.

Yelp
While our room is clean and spacious, the minimalist decor, lacking carpet, drapes or much on the walls, also makes it an echo chamber. The thermostat didn't work; apparently the temperature is controlled from the front desk. The second time we contacted the desk about the temperature we were told control would be transferred to the room and it was not. Rather, I should say it apparently was not because we couldn't change it and there were no particular instructions for how to use the thermostat. Or the window blinds. We did finally figure out the controls for the blinds but it would have been nice if there had been anything in the room to clue us in, other than a panel that wasn't marked. The shower is fine, the bed is comfortable, and the staff is friendly but those are not enough. We will not return.

Yelp
Natalie's review below is very accurate, the decor theme is Scandinavian furniture -minimum security federal prison cum art school graduate student exhibition. Grand Rapids is the most suburban strip mall major city in the Midwest, so there are lots of bland chain motels and hotels, whether or not they are near the airport they have that airport motel ambiance. Then there's the historic Amway Grand (where in ancient times we had our wedding rehearsal dinner), elegant, classy, and overpriced. There isn't that much else, so we were elated to find this unique, clever if slightly claustrophobic little boutique hotel. The closest thing we've experienced was a boutique hotel in San Francisco, we love this place. First, it's so artistic in a clean, minimalist way, the bathroom could be displayed in a modern art museum. Love the shower, a lot like getting clean in a brand new aquarium tank. The bed just so comfortable, the lighting actually fun to play with. Plenty of plugs for charging the suddenly necessary electronics for 21st century living and traveling. We didn't have a nice view, but without the windows facing the brick walls, the room would have been too claustrophobic. Nice friendly bar, the service here is very good. I like how they don't speak in scripted corporate fake-nice pseudo-English, instead they were sincere, competent, and helpful. The work distribution is strange, the young lady working the front desk is also the concierge and the coffee barista, but she worked this long 8 hour shift, and because we kept coming and going, and asking her questions each arrival and departure, I can say with certainty, she somehow efficaciously juggled accurately answering my questions, the phone for reservations and directions, checking in guests, making and serving espresso, and fielding calls from guests in rooms. All the workers were similarly skilled in what I thought was excessive multi-tasking demands, the crew here is much better than the usual hotel staff found in chain hotels. Parking next door at $16 (with in out privileges) is actually a fair deal for downtown Grand Rapids. The hotel is very conveniently located, walking distance to a number of good restaurants, cafes, Kendall Art College, Kalamazoo Community College, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum (which I recommend, very nice little art museum). You get a free pass to MVP Club health club, less than a block away which is actually a lot better than having a small awkward limited hotel workout room. We walked to Reserve restaurant for dinner and were happy with that choice. The hotel is mostly green, but like all the hotels I've stayed in trying to be eco-friendly and environmentally responsible, there's some inconsistency here. The air conditioning energy was partially wasted as they needed to keep the front door ajar to let in some fresh air and to hear the cafe patrons sitting outside. It wasn't convenient to take the stairs instead of the elevator (key card locked for the guest floors, good for safety and security, not so good for eco-friendly and healthy stair climbing). I couldn't figure out where to recycle my aluminum pop can, and I don't think the roof is green. If you're just going to stop in Grand Rapids briefly, and just need a room to sleep in, then this might not be worth it, but if you're spending any time in the area, and would like a unique hotel with personality and artistic style, I recommend this boutique hotel, we really enjoyed ourselves here. They have a nice ballroom, and judging by the staff we met, I think this would be a great place for special event.

Yelp
The good: convenient location, very comfy bed, pleasant staff. Terrific restaurant nearby for breakfast (Little Bird). Sleek modern surfaces and large bathroom/shower. The meh: a "boutique room" with a "light well" is really a room with an air shaft and no view. Bathroom door wouldn't close.

Yelp
I had higher expectations for this hotel. We were fortunate enough to find metered parking on the street (close enough to where they don't charge for the remainder on the weekend). The hotel staff was lukewarm and not very hospitable. The room- think very minimal and modern. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. But- we were definitely short on bathroom towels which was frustrating, so I had to call the front desk to have someone send some up. The room gets cold quickly since the floor isn't carpeted. It was nice having a hotel right on Monroe center and close to everything. With that said, there are so many other hotels within walking distance. I would have rather paid the extra $50 to stay at the JW Marriott right down the road. I would only stay here again if there was a good Groupon deal out there.

Yelp
First of all... This is not our first stay at a "City Flats Hotel". We stayed more than once at the Holland location- we really liked the "Different" look of the Holland hotel rooms and the staff was very friendly etc,,,, But enough about the "GOOD" location and on to the Grand Rapids location- Rooms were terribly small, I mean Really Small !!! Parking is a complete Joke. You have to park in a garage 3 blocks away above the 5th floor and try to remember your way back after a night of fun at all the wonderful Breweries that Grand Rapids offer... I mean how much would it cost to hire a kid to Valet you car ?? I would gladly pay extra ! There are no Ice Machines or Vending Machines NONE !! I had to walk down from the 5th floor with my Ice bucket and get some from the bar tenders well ! Very Disappointed indeed !

Yelp
Awesome hotel!! City view. Water in a box, free coffee, comfy bed and nice pressured shower.

Yelp
This hotel was amazing. The room setup was very unique and modern. When I got into bed I was blessed to discover one of the softest beds I have ever slept on. It was a dream and I slept like a baby. The bathroom in our room was very spacious and everything was clean. Overall I was very impressed with the room and would stay again. The only downside was the restaurant food which was bland and uninspiring. With that, the happy hour beer prices were wonderful.

Yelp
The good: - Great location downtown, with plenty of bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. - Boutique feel, quirky and colorful decor, exposed brick, and mixed textures. - Awesome front desk service. - Huge room, with entryway, sleeping area, dressing area, and a bathroom with separate toilet. - Dual head shower with a huge rain shower head. The bad: - Housekeeping. My bed wasn't fully made (the comforter was just pulled up over the rumpled sheets and tucked in) and the toilet wasn't touched at all - I could tell by a thread I'd accidentally dropped onto the toilet seat before I'd left that morning! - Room amenities were lacking. No minifridge, for example. I had 90% of the supplies I needed for coffee, but no cups. Snacks had been left out, but the apples were starting to rot. - Room decor is rather spartan, with lino floors (not very welcoming!) and minimal decorative touches. - No proper windows! There was only one room left when I booked, so I knew I was in for an 'architectural light well' rather than an actual view. This translated to a decent size window overlooking a 2x2ft space technically open to the sky although you could see nothing but wall. Inside the room, the window wasn't visible from anywhere but the desk. The overall effect felt like I was underground. - Noise. My room had an adjoining door to the next room that did nothing to insulate sound. Additionally, the floors were linoleum rather than carpet, which generated a slight echo. - The bed. Personal preference obviously, but this was a very very soft bed. - I was staying alone so it didn't matter, but the sliding barn door to the bathroom didn't afford much privacy. Thankfully the toilet was separate with a real door! Overall: expensive for the facilities - I'd look elsewhere next time.

Yelp
I was pretty disappointed by my stay. I stayed one night in the new wing. Although it was on the 2nd floor, I felt like I was in a basement. Between the cement walls, cold floor, and one small window high up off the ground that looked at a wall it was not a welcoming room. I did like the bathroom, though. Also, my room smelled terrible, like the materials that they used in the room was giving off noxious fumes. Also, hilariously/dangerously, there were chunks of metal and wood sticking out of the floor- see pic.

Yelp
With a different staff this would be a 3.5star. The hotel is nice enough and has a terrific location,it's a bit noisy but the staff is absolutely wonderful. A sincere smile and hello goes a long way in my book, and every member of the staff seemly happy to be there. Whether an act or not, I would definitely stay here again for that reason alone.

Yelp
Stayed one night on July 7th and had an awesome stay! Extremely friendly staff, beautiful room (the bed was the greatest) and parking was easy! I can't wait to return.

Yelp
CityFlatsHotel is a 4/5 star stay. I can't stress the perfect location, right in the heart if GR. The bed provided one of best sleeps I've had in YEARS. The amenities are great except for one minor inconvenience, the parking garage cost $25 per night unless you can find street parking which is free from 6pm-8am. Minus that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, as the staff was more than willing to suggest their favorite places in town!

Yelp
Do you need a place to stay in Grand Rapids that is a little more "hip". This place will serve. Bar/reception area- they got that Parking- well....okay so they need to work on the parking. Had to drive around, with use of hotel provided map, which is necessary because otherwise its confusing, to the parking garage, attached to the hotel by a walkway, which was fine but if you need someone to park your car, these people didn't offer and yes you'll have to walk about 50 yards to the hotel in a covered, pay, garage. Room- Lets call it European. It is the Ikea of a room. Compact, fashionable and sparse. Bed- check. Bench to sit on- check. Coffee- check. Desk-check. No carpet- Yes! Huge check. Carpet is generally questionable the ...whatever they were-cork, laminate, bamboo, don't care it wasn't carpet so wasn't gross, floors were fantastic. Window-...its weird but there was a window that looked out to a corridor that had 3 brick walls. not a big deal as I didn't spend much time in the room but if you want to look out into the city...maybe ask for a room with a view. Location- Local to bars, museums, live music, restaurants, all the things. Really bad ass comic book store if you are into that sorta thing. overall. it was a cool place Didn't eat or drink there as there were a lot of great options around the area.

Yelp
Staff was extremely friendly and helpful! We stayed on the 3rd floor and the bed was so soft and comfortable. The bathroom was beautiful with a great shower. The only weird thing was our window looked right into another persons window, so we just kept the shades down and it was fine. This is a very enjoyable hotel to stay at and they have a beautiful reception hall as well!

Yelp
We stayed at City Flats for my birthday following Wicked at DeVos Place. We'd read all the reviews and felt like we knew what to expect and I knew I'd like the minimalist and modern decor. We had no difficulty locating the parking ramp and walkway (although the hotel's website should say to park in the Monroe St. Parking Ramp rather than just saying "the parking ramp behind the hotel.") Staff were pleasant and helpful and the location is perfect for walking to many fabulous restaurants, breweries and entertainment. Our room was very clean but, yes, it was weird not having a door on the bathroom. You'd best know your roommate well before using the facilities! We were on the fifth floor, only seven rooms on our floor and we never heard nor saw another guest. The bed was comfortable but, unfortunately, we could not sleep. We must have been located near the mechanical room. Beginning around 11 p.m., a sound like a cannon went off, followed by the sound of a freight train for two minutes, then thirty seconds of peace and quiet, then BANG!!! Repeat for eight hours. When we checked out and the clerk asked how our stay was, we told him about the artillery. He says this is a common complaint and, due to the design of the building, nothing can be done. He did reduce the cost of our stay a bit but we still left wishing we'd made the two hour drive home and slept in our own bed. It appears that management has been responsive to reviewers complaints: there are now coffee makers in the rooms, individual thermostats, a luggage rack, sound dampening tiles over the concrete floors, etc. Hopefully, in a nearly empty hotel, these noisy rooms will be assigned last for guests who are willing to pay nearly $200 for a night's stay.

Mike C.

Yelp
First, the staff is very helpful, nice and reactive. No issues there. The room. Sorry to say, this is the worst hotel room I ever stayed in. For over $200 a night, I expected a little warmth and comfort. There is no carpet on the floor anywhere just cold hard composite flooring. Not even a throw rug in the bathroom. The entire room is cold, hard and uninviting. Also, my room had high ceilings, that coupled with the lack of carpet or wall décor, created a loud, echo chamber effect that was, again, uninviting and cold. There was no window in the room. Just an odd chimney area that let in a tiny bit of light. I had to go down to the lobby to see if it was cloudy or sunny, raining or not. Odd. The furniture, other than the bed, was hard, uncomfortable and not at all functional. Tiny desk, an odd modern and uncomfortable chair. Tiny bedside "tables" that were more like little upholstered stools. There is no usable storage for your things if you are staying more than one night. Not even a good place to open and store your luggage. Overall an uninviting, cold, cave like experience that I do not wish to repeat. I agree with others. There is little instructions on how to find the parking, get your parking validated. Worse there is NO info on how to use the fancy lamps, lights, switches and other gadgets in the room. Really poor. This is a classic example of an artistic design taking priority over functionality. The room was dramatic to look at, but totally uncomfortable, uninviting, cold and barren to live in. I expected a lot better for a downtown hotel "Deluxe" room. I'm sure you can find nicer in the area.

Maria P.

Yelp
This place was the bomb!!! Eco-chic, hip, immaculate, super friendly, knowledgable and helpful staff and to top it all off, located in the heart of downtown GR, walking distance to some of the best restaurants, clubs, museums, galleries and more. And I don't mean a 15-20 minute walk, I mean a 3-5 minute walk, which makes a difference when it is in the single digits or less outside. Rooms are small, but perfectly appointed, and cleverly laid out to maximize the space. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in, five stars just for the excellent night's sleep! Super clean without the strong oder of bleach or chemicals, major kudos for that as well! We loved it and can't wait to go back!!

Natalie R.

Yelp
Imagine you are wandering through IKEA. Everyone is very nice, though, there seems to be a dozen attentive people who care about nothing more than making your life easier, safer, happier, better. You step into a mock bedroom, replete with sleek birch furniture and minimalist decor. Now imagine someone bricked you into the bedroom. You feel a little claustrophobic, so you sit down on the bed. Now imagine you're very happy to be bricked into an IKEA-life bedroom suite because you've discovered THE MOST COMFORTABLE bed in the world. With that and room service, what more could you want? Nothing. The answer is, nothing. The moral of this story is that for a smallish room demanding economy in motion, you get a very nice bathroom and THE MOST COMFORTABLE bed in the world. And room service.
