When my father lived alone and the housekeeper who took care of my mother didn't show or was unable to cook , he was glad to have Meals on Wheels deliver his lunch; of course after he'd played golf all morning.....

Thank you for allowing me to give and express my assessment of Citymeals On Wheels. I have joined recently. Still not quite sure just what day/time I can expect a Delivery. The Delivery Person is very nice, but he often leaves very quickly, and I am not sure if he speaks English. Of course, that may have some consequences as far as appointments being set or what has already been set up. Whenever I've tried reaching anyone at Citymeals On Wheels, there is No Answer, just Voice Recordings, No Person to talk with, and always need to leave messages, and then sometimes not hearing back from anyone for at least a day -- sometimes more. As far as the Packaging goes, I am fortunate enough to be able to maneuver opening the packaging. Some elders are not as fortunate, and in some instances, it's difficult to open the milk containers, butter, bread, often needing the use of scissors. Additionally, lots of Plastic Bags (environmental issues) are used for the milk, bread, fruit, etc. On that note, and this is most important, I think there's too much food for one week for one person. I am not a person that ever wants to waste food. I brought this to the attention of someone doing a survey from the agency who reached out to me recently. I was told unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done about that, and that I should give the food away... Very bad solution in my opinion, to a packaging/distribution problem, and it seems there is a simple remedy, especially with so many people going hungry!! The Quality of the Food: The Tangerines are not even edible. They're tiny and dried up. The Apple Juice is not so good as far as sugar content, and I usually don't drink Apple Juice or any other juices. (I believe the AMA or the Nutritional Council has stated that Juices contain too much sugar, and are not good for people who are diabetic or pre diabetic) The Orange Juice tastes like Grapefruit Juice. The Fish n Veges can use some flavoring, and the fish is usually below par. Please also understand that I am very grateful for the help, but hope that with this Post, Citymeals On Wheels will objectively and considerably address the issues listed, and really try working on better and meaningful solutions. Thank you.

Has anyone in authority ever read the nutritional content of the meals ordered/prepared for seniors? Over 900mg of sodium in a 300 calorie meal. Mostly carbs. Little protein or vegetables. This is outrageous. I took a picture of the label from my neighbor's meal. Unfortunate I can't attach the photo.

Citymeals Volunteer Program is a wonderful place that allows communities to come together. The students of MMALC have been lucky to have been presented with the amazing opportunity to service the community and deliver meals. A big thanks to Ms. E. Jones...

The Friday menu included fish, spaghetti and bokchoy. One would have to be starving to find this combination appetizing. Fish, spaghetti and bokchoy...

Yelp
City Meals on Wheels is an excellent nonprofit organization providing meals to elderly and disabled in their homes. Some of the individuals they serve would be totally isolated if it weren't for their visits from City Meals on Wheels employees. Plus they receive a healthy meal. When I was younger trying to assist those in need I found the employees eager to assist me with helping others. I'm sure hoping I don't need their assistance but I'm certainly glad they are here if I do!

Yelp
This was my first project with New York Cares in 2005. It's a great organization to work with. We were given bags of premade meals to hand deliver to the elders. When I went the first time, I brought my friend along. He's tall and athletic. Hence, I wasn't afraid to knock on a stranger's door. He was interested in buying a place in Manhattan. Thus, it was beneficial for him to check out the neighborhood. The clients were very grateful for our services. They aren't able to carry groceries and walk up and down those stairs. Some of them don't even have relatives to interact with. I conversed with them during my short time with them.

Yelp
I volunteer every Saturday here via NY Cares. Deliver w/ Caring Community @ Washington Sq North. I help Caring Community prepare, bag, and deliver meals to homebound seniors in Greenwich Village. (9:45am - 1pm: 18 volunteers). We bag one hot meal, one cold meal, and one cold pack (juice, water, fruit). We then hand deliver these meals to homes of seniors, most of which are in the immediate area. When you deliver, you'd be surprised how many rent controlled apts there are in much coveted prime locations such as 5th ave =) Not giving the exact address, as my vain ass knows I have stalkers out there!

Yelp
I have supported CityMeals since the late '90's - and a few years ago participated in the (now defunct) elder partner program where I called (or visited - but by then I was in Philly so I called) an elderly gentleman every week for 2 years until he ultimately died at 89. I love this organziaton and the important and life-saving work they do. Please visit theor site and consider a donation - even $2 or $5 or $10 can make a difference, (for many campaigns 100% of your donation goes toward giving food to elderly people in NYC. The administrative overhead is very low. I just LOVE this organization.
