The 16 Essential Sardinia Restaurants

"Clocking in at nearly 90,000 square feet, Cagliari’s main mercato is one of the largest in Europe. The ground floor is devoted to meat, cheese, legumes, produce, bread, and other grocery items, while the lower level is completely dedicated to fish so fresh you may get splashed as one tries to wriggle out of its container. While San Benedetto does boast some imports from other areas, like tuna from Carloforte, much of the catch is hyperlocal, like eels from the nearby lagoon and dogfish destined for burrida, the city’s signature starter of pickled fish with a sauce of walnuts and fish liver." - Katie Parla

The market has been temporarily relocated 200 meters from its original historic site, which urgently needs renovation work. You can find it in the temporary structure next to the opera theater. It offers a magnificent selection of traditional Sardinian and Italian foods. What truly matters is not its location, but the delicious specialties you can discover there. Go find it—it’s easy to reach!

Take a stroll for sure. Lots of cool very fresh and local food of all kinds. Wish I had access to a market like this daily. Bus lines right outside. Some neat neighborhood streets near it to walk through as well.

Fresh bread, fruits, vegetables, meat and great pastries, nice local market. If you want to buy bread here go early, most is sold out at 11.00 in the morning. Watch out where you buy meat because they also sell Rabbit and horsemeat.

Best fresh market in Cagliari. Amazing products and super friendly people. I go here once a week for my food shopping. Never been disappointed.

Great Indoor market, for the locals and the tourists to immerse in the full Sardinian food experience. There is plenty of stalls from vegetables and fruits, meat, cheese, wines and local pastries on the first floor, while fish to the basement. It is a great idea to have 2 independent floors. If you like wine, you can buy there locally produced wine (white or red) from the tap. Bring your own bottle or they have it as well.

A heads up…the original market is closed for restoration but if you continue about 200 meters there is a temporary market that has the same vendors. Maybe not as picturesque but as far as food is concerned it’s the same. If you are staying at an equipped BNB and you cook this place will save you a ton of money. Fresh fish, meats, produce, cheese, pasta and even a stall that sells local wine in 1.5 liter plastic bts for about €4. Everyone is friendly and helpful and if you try to speak Italian it goes a long way. We were blown away by the kindness and complete pride of the stall owners. They often allow you to taste before you buy. One stall in particular,Polleria Piccardi, gave us a package of rabbit liver that we inquired about….absolutely free of charge and as we lover rabbit liver this was a complete treat.Highly recommended for a real taste of Cagliari.

The original San Benedetto Market building was closed on March 1, 2025, primarily because it had become structurally outdated and no longer met modern safety and hygiene standards. Specifically, it required a complete overhaul, including updates to plumbing, electrical systems, ventilation, accessibility, and overall market layout. Plans include upgrading the internal infrastructure to better support vendors and improve shopper experience. To allow the renovation, about 180 vendors were relocated to a new modular, covered market structure in Piazza Amedeo Nazzari (near Teatro Lirico). This opened on March 18, 2025, and will remain operational until the renovation is complete (likely 2027). The structure occupies a 4,000 m² metal modular pavilion, with about 2,700 m² dedicated to roughly 170 stalls including fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, bakery items, and cheeses. There are also several public restrooms, a bar and even veterinary services — all of which are under roof and fully accessible, including for people with disabilities. 🛍️ Market Hours • Weekdays: 07:00 – 14:00 • Saturday: 07:00 – 15:00 • Sunday: Closed
