The Best Hotels in the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Between the palm tree-lined drive and on-site tennis courts, the temperate NorCal weather and the castle-like Tudor Revival architecture, Claremont Club & Spa is an icon pulled straight from the halcyon days of the Bay Area. The property began as the private estate of the Thornburg family, and throughout the century, its storied rooms have hosted legendary guests like Louis Armstrong and Frank Lloyd Wright. Nowadays, Berkeley academics, Nobel laureates, and families from around the country filter through the lobby of this classic California hotel. Newly renovated guest rooms bring this historic landmark into the modern age. Soft blue and grey palettes make these spacious rooms feel soothing and opulent. There are sleek, modernized bathrooms to match—neutral wallpaper and chandeliers set the mood, while oversized soaking tubs provide a place for R&R. From its perch in the Berkeley Hills—a breezy 30-minute drive away from San Francisco—the Claremont Club & Spa provides a breath of respite from the land of tech giants and scrapping startups." - CNT Editors

Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival?A striking white landmark hotel built in 1915. Set against the green Berkeley Hills, it looks like a castle. What’s the crowd like?Berkeley academics, Nobel laureates, and families from around the country filter through the lobby of this classic California hotel. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Newly renovated guest rooms bring this historic landmark into the modern age. Soft blue and grey palettes make these spacious rooms feel soothing, and opulent. Opt for one that has a view of the San Francisco Bay. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Tufted headboards, plush bedding, and fluffy down comforters make the beds feel like clouds. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The hotel’s best amenities are found outside the guest rooms. But a room with a view, and mid-day naps in the plush beds, are ideal. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Sleek modernized bathrooms are one of the room’s best perks. Neutral wallpaper and chandeliers set the mood, while oversized soaking tubs provide a place for R&R. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is included in the daily resort fee, and as fast as you need it to be; it's also free in public spaces. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Tennis courts are on site. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The whimsical architecture sets the mood for a magical stay. Bottom line: worth it, and why? It's reasonably priced, location and amenities considered. And offers a unique stay just outside of bustling San Francisco." - Jenna Scatena

How to Plan a Romantic Getaway, According to Experts - AFAR

"A classic hotel that recommends spontaneous or off-peak getaways over holiday-centric travel—weekdays often mean fewer crowds and better deals—and stresses practical planning tips for surprises (pack or hint at appropriate attire or gift a new outfit) while urging guests to contact the concierge early (four to six weeks) so staff can craft and fine-tune meaningful experiences." - Ashlea Halpern

It’s simply sad to have experience such a poorly run hotel that is blazingly indifferent to the comfort and satisfaction of its guests. I struggle to come up with a single aspect of the place that was redeeming except perhaps the choice of location by its original builders and the view afforded from it’s ill-kept, cheaply furnished and ineptly run restaurant. ||I love older hotels and have no problem with the patina of age. This one is filled with ugly art, worn out and garage sale quality furniture. In addition to a standard room rate that is insulting (given the shabbiness of the place) they charge $55 a night to park a car plus a $50 resort fee. It’s clearly a case of getting as much money as possible out of guests that are unlikely to stay there again. I certainly won’t. ||The website includes an elaborate array of breakfast choices but when we went for breakfast we were told that their weekend brunch menu only offered a small fraction of them. It included an omelet but they refuse to allow any variance of ingredients. You can have it their way or leave. ||They are under heavy construction but did not bother mentioning it when we booked and lost power during the morning we left so had to carry our luggage down four flights of stairs. We’re still awaiting the final bill because the incompetent front desk seems incapable of typing in a correct e-mail address. ||I am sorry to have to be so critical but it’s a crime that this Grand Dame of hotels delivers so little for such a price.

It started with Effie being incredibly kind, helpful, and attentive. She made sure our room was ready and when it wasn't, found another room that was. She made us feel like we were in vacation mode even though it was just an overnight stay. The hotel itself is gorgeous even as it is undergoing renovations. I really appreciate the amenities it has as a swimmer. Not enough hotels care enough to ensure all clients are satisfied like this hotel does. I only wish they would clean up the room types/names as I don't grasp the major differences by the names alone.

Phenomenal service, phenomenal facilities and views. I live pretty nearby and have stayed here twice with my partner and came once on my own for a massage. It’s kind of become my safe haven these days. Plus when you pay for a massage or spa service you get to use the facilities (pool, gym, hot tub, sauna, steam room, etc which is a really great perk. Not to mention the massage is very good and worth the money. They really take care of you at Claremont :)

I stayed here for a wedding. I upgraded my room to a spa tub and they gave me a room with no tub by mistake. I let them know and a person named Lorie helped me and was not very nice or courteous. She treated me as an inconvenience! I went to diner and was seated outside by a hostess. A manager named Lanny came over and yelled you cannot sit here. I gave this table to someone else and pointed at me to move. The other hostess felt bad you could tell. I was thinking this is two people within 20 minutes making me feel terrible as a guest. I was moved to a table inside and had a waiter named Robert who turned things around. His service was a 10 out of 10. The food was a 6/10. The rooms are nice but under construction. They should tell you that when you book. Price was $1,650 for two nights, dinner, and coffee. I have stayed here before and had a better experience. Based on the service, rudeness from Lorie and Lanny I would not return. I would improve service and treat guests better if you want them to return. Do mot snap at your customer! Consistency matters!

This hotel feels like my new home because of Effie at the front desk. Her service is impeccable. She took care of my every need and made me feel appreciated and valued in the process. I travel often for work and sometimes it can feel like you just want to come home for a warm meal and to your family. The Claremont is where I go because I am treated with excellent service and because Effie makes it feel like home. She is warm, attentive, professional, and delivers the highest quality service. This is the second time I’ve interacted with her (I visited for vacation in March 2025) and she was just as lovely then. She remembered every detail about my previous trip, my boyfriend, and I could tell she genuinely cared about me and my experience at The Claremont. I’ll be back and I’ve already told my friends that when they visit, they need to ask for Effie.

I sent an email to the property manager following my poor stay at the hotel. I never received a response so here is an excerpt of what I sent: I am writing to bring to your attention several significant issues I experienced during my recent stay at the Claremont Hotel and Resort. As a property that markets itself as a 5-star hotel and one of the highest rated in the area, I had high expectations for service quality and guest experience. Unfortunately, my stay fell dramatically short of these standards, and I encountered multiple service problems that I believe warrant your immediate attention and response. I was never informed that the hotel was undergoing construction during my stay, which significantly impacted the experience. Additionally, I was not notified that parking was not included in my room rate, forcing me to incur unexpected additional expenses. Despite opting for an upgraded room, I found the accommodations to be dated and poorly positioned. Rather than offering the enhanced experience I paid for, the room overlooked construction areas and AC vents instead of providing a proper view that guests would reasonably expect from an upgrade. I found the overall staff demeanor to be unprofessional and unwelcoming. Throughout my stay, staff members consistently failed to provide basic hospitality courtesies such as greeting guests, opening doors, or acknowledging my presence. The front desk staff, in particular, made me feel as though I was inconveniencing them whenever I needed assistance, which is completely contrary to expected hospitality standards. The pool area was consistently overcrowded with no available seating, despite your hotel's marketing emphasis on pool amenities. The lack of adequate deck chairs and pool-side accommodations feels misleading given how prominently these facilities are featured in your promotional materials. Additionally, the few deck chairs that were available had food smeared and left on them, creating unsanitary conditions. The towels provided were in unacceptable condition - ratty, filled with holes, and covered in stains - which is completely inappropriate for a hotel of your supposed caliber. I do want to acknowledge that your Irish staff members working at the pool area were exceptional. They demonstrated the level of friendliness, professionalism, and hospitality that I would expect from a quality establishment. Again - I received no response from the hotel.

The Claremont is a gorgeous, iconic hotel. A taste of old California charm, gleaming in the Berkeley Hills. The management is phemonenal, particularly Edward Roe, who went the extra mile in making our stay comfortable and memorable. The staff is helpful, friendly, and they obviously enjoy working there. You can always credit great management for that. Stay here! Highly recommended.

We were warmly welcomed by Makiva upon arrival, and our family truly cannot say enough about her dedication to ensuring we were well taken care of. Although there was an error with our reservation made by one of her colleagues—despite our prior calls—Makiva noticed the issue before we did. She handled it with grace and professionalism, never placing blame, and simply fixed the problem. She represented the hotel so well that we didn’t get frustrated or care about the errors. ||She even took the time to text us once she found a suitable room and later followed up with a phone call to make sure it exceeded our expectations.||As we explored the property, we were met with warm greetings from staff at every turn. The grounds are beautiful, even with some ongoing construction. To top it all off, the staff went above and beyond to recognize our anniversary, surprising us with treats to celebrate with the kids.||Our experience so far has been outstanding—and we’re only halfway through our stay! Don’t hesitate—book now. You and your family will absolutely enjoy it.

Yelp
I experienced outstanding service and kindness from Makiva White at the front desk check in at the Claremont on November 7, 2024. It was a complicated situation requiring many calls. I thank her for her excellent service. Fred Jacobs

Yelp
I stayed here a few months back and had what I'm going to call a one off experience and gave a bad review. The hotel has since gone above and beyond to change my mind and that they did. The admin assistant reached out and was very accommodating. I came back and the person at the Front desk was so kind and welcoming that I want to hire him and the room is really nice and spacious. There was no wait and my room is clean. I had a wrong impression the first time around and I have to say I like this room a lot. There's was chocolates and a personalized card and cold water in my room. I will be back and I want this room.

Yelp
Claremont was very easily accessible and had plenty of parking. Staff were very courteous and eager to assist. Rooms were well kept and clean. The bathrooms looked like newly renovated. The colors in the rooms were dark but very comfortable. Claremont is very classy hotel with many amenities such as gym, spa, tennis courts and swimming pool. Bakery had excellent coffee and freshly baked goods. I had the croissant with my coffee every morning and it was so delicious. Looking forward to staying here again. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I booked a Deluxe Bay View Room with a King Bed via Amex Travel, and during check-in, I specifically requested a bright and well-lit room. Regrettably, we were assigned a room on the 7th floor that was dark and had only a small window. After requesting a change, we were moved to a slightly larger room with a marginally bigger window. However, feeling too fatigued to pursue another move, we decided to settle for the disappointing decor and unsatisfactory furniture arrangement. The accompanying pictures illustrate the situation: there's barely a foot of space between the oversized cabinet and the bed, and the wall near the closet is only adorned with an unattractive outlet. The overall feng shui of this room is quite poor. I can think of 1,299 better ways to spend $1,299.06 for a two-night stay. I am extremely disappointed. The pictures reveal what I anticipated versus what we actually received. While I understand that room types can vary, the general ambiance should be consistent and not feel like a significant downgrade.

Yelp
As soon as I drove into the property it was pleasant, all the amazing memories of my prior visits came back as a lovely establishment. I used to come here prior to 2020 often and enjoyed my visits, especially at the spa. There was a long period of closure but luckily many of the associates who provided services in the spa returned. From the moment I called two days ago, I spoke to a person who was extremely pleasant and helpful. Considering the yelp reviews I had my guards up and was uncertain if the standards would remain the same. She graciously advised me the deluge and jacuzzi were under remodeling which was almost a "deal breaker" for me since I enjoy both of those very much. Nevertheless I booked for a hydro facial. I walked in the spa and was kindly greeted by Fernando who was welcoming, kind, and hit all points of service edicate. Very impressive!!! The staff in the spa were wonderful. The showers and steam room was amazing! I enjoyed the numerous shower heads starting at knee level to head level. I felt like royalty getting a shower by several warm delicate sprinklers heads shooting at me. It was nostalgic and great. Considering this place was built on 1940 it still operated well. My hydro facial was with Patti who has worked here for 31 years and did an amazing facial. The dedication, service, ethics, and sincere appreciation to work here for so long is certainly felt in the service provided. There are many long-term associates, who appreciate and enjoy working here. I was very pleased with my visit, experience, and will certainly keep coming back!

Yelp
If you're getting a therapeutic message, I'd recommend Fanny! 100% one of the best messages hands down. Came here for a spa day with my sisters and it was well worth it. Was a lovely day!

Yelp
Superior kid services, kids club that our 4 and 6 year old loved but we wish it could have been a little longer. Kids loved the pools and we stay ed at the Claremont while making little side trips to Berkeley steam train and Lawrence hall of science. This is our 3rd annual trip to the Claremont. Great staff, beautiful setting, great massages

Yelp
Amazing location with beautiful interiors and a fabulous view. The pool is great, especially on slower days when it's not as busy. The staff is always so helpful, kind, and welcoming!

Yelp
Overview: Why a three star rating? (1) Zero sound insulation between rooms. (2) No porter, no assistance with luggage, no directions to room, slow check-in. In other words, no real service. Arrival: Arrived by car. No doorman, no offer to assist with luggage. Check in: extremely slow Room (368): This room is in a hard to reach "annex" of the hotel. Double beds, mini-refrigerator (which was not turned on), TV, all the normal items you'd expect in a hotel room. Decent sized room. Bed: Decent bed with above average linens and pillows Sleep quality: Below average because sounds can be heard. I literally could hear every word of a neighbor's phone conversation in the morning. Fortunately, he was not chatty. But the lack of sound insulation between rooms is abysmal. Others in my group complained of the same issue in other parts of the hotel Bathroom: Spacious bathroom with a great tub. Shower pressure was dismal. Excellent Babyliss hair dryer. Good towels. Staff: Overall just average. Housekeeping: very good Conference facilities: very pretty conference facilities but the HVAC system is HORRIBLE in the Sapphire room. Conference catering was much better than average. Had a nice lunch including Caesar salad, salmon, chicken, and clam chowder. All were above average. WiFi: free wifi is painfully slow. If you plan to work remotely, you'll need to pay for the upgraded WiFi. Misc: If you have an early morning flight, don't bank on getting an Uber. No Uber would pick me up for an airport run on the Monday morning I departed. Arrange a cab in advance if you want a predictable airport run.

Yelp
Stopped in just to walk around the grounds & look at the Christmas decorations. The valet staff was friendly. Refreshing water was available in the lobby as well.

Yelp
I recently attended an event at the Claremont Club & Spa - A Fairmont Hotel, and I want to share my dining experience. The meal began with the Artisan California lettuces salad, which was a delightful mix of fresh, crisp vegetables, spiced walnuts, pickled shallot, and a champagne vinaigrette dressing. It set the tone for what turned out to be a wonderful evening. For the main course, we were served rotisserie chicken, and I must say, it was truly exceptional. The flavor was outstanding, and it was cooked to perfection. The chicken was tender, juicy, and seasoned just right. It's not often you find such a well-executed chicken dish at an event like this. And let's not forget the dessert - the carrot cake. It was a sweet ending to a fantastic meal. Moist, flavorful, and beautifully presented, it was the perfect way to conclude the dining experience. The service throughout the evening was impeccable. The servers were attentive, coming to each table to refill water or wine promptly. Their attention to detail added to the overall enjoyment of the evening. All in all, I had a truly great dining experience at the Claremont Club & Spa. The quality of the food, the attentive service, and the beautiful setting all contributed to a memorable evening.

Yelp
I've attended many work events in nice hotels like the Claremont, and during my recent two-day event at the Claremont, I was impressed by the small details that you rarely see in other places. The service was professional and experienced throughout. I loved the atmosphere, which one Yelper described as "spooky" in a positive way. Instead of a Barton Fink situation, the Claremont feels like old California, possibly with a pleasant haunting by a Hollywood star who wept herself to death. My room was comfortable and clean, and my bed had a variety of pillow firmness, which is always important, and the shampoo, conditioner, and lotion were a cut above the usual almost-antiseptic stuff you get in lower-rated hotels. I also had a Bay view from my window, which was lovely. The gym was one of the best I've ever had in any hotel. Instead of the usual dirty and barely maintained machines, there were a slew of weights, treadmills, and fitness classes. A quick note: if you're looking for a class that will kick your a$$ and is led by an excellent instructor, I recommend 6am Thursday. If needed, you can visit the well-stocked massage-ball/foam-roller area. At most work/hotel events, I'm used to convention food: overly salty and fatty yet miraculously tasteless while managing to be queasy-inducing. However, the Claremont provided tons of fresh, flavorful options for us, and you know you're at a good place when 1) the teas aren't Twinings or Lipton; 2) the ice cubes are perfectly clear; and 3) the cookies aren't from Costco, and you eat a whole giant one and don't even care that you'd like to take a nap later because it was so good. Overall, my only quibble about the Claremont is that I didn't run into the ghost.

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay and they were accommodating to our requests and needs. We requested an early check in for a wedding party and the "no view" king room actually had a great small window view of the city. It was quiet and very modern. I also found the bed very comfortable. The breakfast was also fabulous.

Yelp
Tried this classic hotel spa for a deep tissue massage. Service was great with booking, massage itself and check in being seamless. All rates for massages are posted on their website and include tip if 20%. Parking is validated during check in. Massage itself was good not exceptional. They have a few different options with parental massage as well. Your massage also comes with access to the heath club, lap pool, jazuzzi and workout classes at the main hotel so would recommend packing swim and /or workout wear. This athletic club access does however involve walking across the parking lot in your robe so something to be aware of. A good experience spending the day here.

Yelp
Ever since my husband planned our elaborate proposal around a weekend staying at a Fairmont hotel in SF, I have been a fan of Fairmont properties. Overall, I feel like Fairmont is a brand that really lives up to their reputation and so I was excited about a girl's trip to the Fairmont Spa in Berkeley. When we arrived I dropped hubby off at the cafe, and went upstairs to check in at the spa. Truth be told, we did wander the property a bit and got ourselves lost until we found ourselves in the fitness center, and a friendly person directed us back to the spa. At check in, the folks behind the counter were friendly and courteous, and I was shown back to the women's changing and lounge area. I was the first person of the day in the area so I was able to assess all of the facilities at my leisure which was lovely. The changing areas were clean, the bathrooms were well appointed, the soaking spas were inviting, and the steam room and lounge both looked like areas I was going to spend some time in. I was told that they were having some issues with their hot water in the showers but that was not an issue while I was there. After changing, I did some soaking in the jacuzzi and attempted the deluge which was too intense for me ( the deluge was a very intense closet of high intensity, blazing hot water shooting directly down for neck tightness but was not for me). I spent a moment or two in the steam room and then retired to the lounge where I made myself a very delicious cup of tea and relaxed until my appointment. My massage therapist Vinessa was super friendly and walked me to our room at the very very end of the massage areas, which made it very quiet and exactly to my liking. Vinessa was intuitive, and found the areas that I was carrying my tension quite immediately and did a great job of varying her pressure for tension and relaxation. After the massage was over, I remarked that it was one of the best massages I've had in a really long time and I felt super relaxed. After the massage I had another cup of tea and then retired to the showers. The shower that I used had a ludicrous number of levers and shower heads and I took a photo and sent it to my husband because it was just so over the top. One thing I was most disappointed in, was that the showers did not have rose 31, the iconic Fairmont bath and body products, which I was really looking forward to. That said, it was still a very good shower and no issues with hot water. Overall it was very easy to get parked and get parking validated at the spa. It was difficult to find the spa but once I was there, the experience was really lovely, detail oriented, clean, and relaxing. I would love to come back here and spend more time at the facility and maybe have lunch and tour the grounds a little more, and definitely book a facial with my massage next time. I'm glad to have found the Claremont at the Fairmont and I will definitely be back! Very much the brand experience I expect from the Fairmont family of properties!

Yelp
This review is for the spa only: We were recently gifted 2 gift cards to the Fairmont Hotels by a family member and decided to come to the Claremont for a spa day. Little did we know, this would prove to be very difficult. To begin, no one ever seems to pick up the phone here and the recording always says that the Spa Coordinators are currently with other guests- even if the Spa is closed... We finally got someone to pick up the phone today and she helped us set up 2 massages. But the interaction was a bit difficult and she was frankly a bit snooty ( ok, expected). Upon arrival, a man named Fernando ( I believe) helped check us in, but he too seemed to think he was too good to work here and was a bit rude. But we were frankly excited to be there and brushed it off. The spa was under construction, so we went to the club and used the pool before the massages which was lovely. But we returned a bit early and got ready for our massages. Now this is the part that frankly really upset me, the masseuse for my mom- Robin- comes out and calls out the name Faybia. We both looked confused as it's close to her name but, not correct, so we hesitated to respond. When no one else responded, my mom says her name and after a nod walks to the masseuse. She tells Robin her name and Robin has the audacity to say- verbatim- " In America, it's Pronounced Faybia." I was sitting on the couch and thought I heard this wrong, after all who says that in the Bay Area, let alone at the Claremont. I also thought that this was wrong, as my mom laughed it off. But after the massage, I asked my mom and she confirmed that this is what Robin had said. This is absolutely absurd and unacceptable. I cannot believe that this woman said this and has had a job at this establishment for over 20 years. I can tell you that she is lucky she did not get me as a client today, as I would have made sure the General Manager of the Claremont heard about it right away before my massage. No one deserves to be talked to in that manner and Robin is lucky if I don't call the Claremont back on Monday. On a positive note, I was lucky enough to have Jamie as my masseuse and he was absolutely fantastic. A skilled professional that I would be happy to visit again. The 2 stars are because he was great.

Yelp
This is my second time here. I came once while in college and that was an interesting experience. I didn't think I'd ever come back. But my sister stays here occasionally and likes it. I went to her room which was quite cute. It was very small, but there was a bit of room. Not as big as the room I stayed in back when I was in college. But the basics are here. The space was nice and clean and I got plenty of photos. This is an Accor hotel, and I stayed in Hotel Sofitel in Paris many years ago, so I didn't know that this was a part of the same chain. So, they have some bare bones that are good, and I'm sure that if I stayed there that I'd be happy. One issue is the lack of outlets for electric cars. My sister has an electric car and had a hard time finding a time when she could recharge her car. And a hotel like the Claremont, with the clientele that they have, should be able to take care of that. My sister's husband was able to snag a spot as he was arriving to have dinner with her. But they only have two spots which aren't enough. But otherwise, they are a fine hotel, but they have a lot to work on.

Yelp
Beautiful old hotel, with a truly spooky vibe. Awesome customer service. Jessie the night security person was awesome! She told us what she knew about the history of the hotel and all the different spooktacular activity she knew about. She also gave us a tour of the honeymoon and presidential suites. Effie was awesome at the front desk and Jennifer rocked it at the concierge's desk. Thank you all for a truly remarkable fun stay. Avoid room 719 we heard. And Yakiva at the front desk!! The best!!

Yelp
I have tried to book a service for over two months now and the over the phone representatives have been rude at best. Completely unhelpful. They are under construction and it just seems like they are not at all trying to be welcoming or helpful. I honesty don't think I will be trying to book an appointment at this point.

Yelp
Tis the season for Holiday Parties and Christmas Tea! We came for the tea and it was delicious ! Had the sparkling wine and creamy earl grey tea. For food had the crab sandwich , egg salad petite sandwich, mushroom tart, smoked salmon on crisp bread and all were delicious ! Also had scones with chives and a raspberry biscuit all served with hot honey, whipped cream and avocado butter! For dessert they had lemon meringue, alfajores, custard, chocolate mouse !! Amazing experience !! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
We just had a fabulous vacation at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. Our accommodations were spacious with phenomenal views of San Francisco . Even before we arrived, we spoke with knowledgeable reservation specialists who helped make our arrival smooth and joyous. One of the truly extraordinary aspects of the hotel is that as guests we had complete use of the Claremont Club that has at least 8 tennis courts, 3 huge heated saltwater pools as well as a supervised kiddie pool and a delightful jacuzzi. I had the pleasure of emailing and talking with Amy Early who is the Manager of Reservations at the hotel since I wanted everything to be perfect for our anniversary. We had never stayed at The Claremont Hotel and since we were coming from the east coast, I wanted everything to be perfect for my wife. In addition to the 22 acres that the hotel snd club occupies, they also have great restaurants as well as wonderful room service!

Yelp
I'll start off with the pros: + Overall beautiful grounds, the view is gorgeous upon entrance and as you walk around the buildings + Polite staff + Nice views of the Bay Area, even the mountain side + Comfortable sized room w/ adequate amenities +Soft sheets + The Le Labo Rose 31 body products are very nice + Room service was fast +The Limewood dinner was great (the fried rockfish and hamachi crudo were excellent) The view as we ate and the sun went down was amazing +The outdoor lounge seating was perfect for a little decompressing +The fitness center was big and has lots of options. Cons: - Nobody at the front was able to take our bags up to our room. Wheeling luggage through the lobby was hard, because the carpet flooring made it drag slow. - The hallways have an old smell, could use some scent to cover it. - The pool was busy, lots of families with kids (which could be a plus, depending on what you're looking for) THIS ONE BOTHERED ME A LOT - There was an inch wide gap at the bottom of our room's door. meaning we could hear and see a shadow every time someone passed us in the hallway. it doesn't feel the safest or the most private, and that's easily fixed with a weather strip or something. so that was a big hotel ick for me. Other than that major red flag, I really enjoyed my stay here & will mostly be back here when I visit Berkeley again.

Yelp
The Club at the Claremont is very nice. But the hotel staff ate the front desk are lousy. They don't seem to understand the concept of "hospitality." It is weird to go to a hotel where the valets and pool and restaurant staff are wonderful but the front desk folks are terrible. They are rude, and seemed bored and annoyed you were speaking to them. And getting information out of them is a chore. Which is fine if you're staying at a Motel 6, but this place wants to be high end.

Yelp
Stayed here with my husband for our wedding weekend, and we had such a wonderful experience. We felt so welcome, celebrated, and supported throughout our stay, and they helped us with everything we could ask for. Couldn't have asked for a better stay. Thank you so much!

Yelp
Have been trying for WEEKS to book an appointment with the spa. There is no option for online booking- you must call. But no one answers the phone at the spa (I have tried upwards of 10 times at this point and have left voicemails with no return call). I tried to get through to the front desk and can only get through to an operator who told me "the front desk doesn't answer phones" and that neither she nor the front desk has access to the spa. Seriously confounding. Considering cancelling our reservation and staying elsewhere....

Yelp
The vibe was fancy and it was a nice hotel although it was a little pricey. The hotel room was nice but it was really small and hard to get around in. The quality of the food was good and the restaurant was nice.

Yelp
Recently increased dues 10% for the first time in my 40 years of membership. Their reason is cost of capital improvements which are expressly forbidden per terms of my agreement. Theft is rampant in the locker room. Secured lockers are broken into. Someone stole my swimming gear and toilet bag twice. Hard to believe, but true. I reported the theft, but nothing happened. Tennis courts difficult to get in summer mornings due to lessons.

Yelp
If you like good quality sleep, I don't recommend this hotel. First of all, the thermostat was completely useless. No matter what we set it at, nothing changed. It was FRIGID during the day and then in the middle of the night I would wake up to the room being mid-70s, despite setting it to 65. Also, there was a smoke detector on the ceiling right above the bed that flashed a bright light every 5 seconds all night. Finally, the lights in the bathroom were motion activated, so any time someone needed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, the lights would flash on before you could shut the door so we were constantly disturbing each other. The rest of the hotel is ok.

Yelp
Claremont is a classy, quaint hotel, but is old. As I walk through the hotel, there is a faint musky smell, and in my room, there is a stronger musky smell, similar to an old library (1 star off). There has been some renovations, but it seems like the renovations were retro-fitted to the old building. Here is an example. The bathroom has been renovated to incorporate a nice shower, but the shower door opens to the sink. It's very awkward getting into and out of the shower (1 star off). I can tell that due to the existing space, there is no way to orient the shower door any other way. The meetings rooms have a gorgeous view of the bay. There is a pool and fitness center, which I heard are nice. The rose-scented shampoo and conditioner are lovely. I have been to the spa in the past and enjoyed my time there as well. A resort fee is added to all reservations, so do note that even if you do not enjoy any of the above, you will still care. The guests here are on the older side: mostly in their 60's or above. I don't think I saw anyone under the age of 40. Nothing wrong with that, just FYI.

Yelp
Excellent pool deck for hanging out in the sun. Plans are to open a poolside restaurant this spring, which will take the Claremont to a new height. They have towels and a hot tub and lap pool and kids pool and ample locker room space that is kept tidy all the time. Parking is easy.

Yelp
we came to the Claremont for relaxation, massages and lunch. The accommodations were less than satisfactory. Only the steam room was working. There women in the steam room were loud and lacked proper spa etiquate with no staff to reinforce a quiet serene environment. It was far from relaxing at this spa. The massage was mediocre. I asked for work on my lower back and didn't get it. The massage therapist seemed unengaged and disconnected with her work. The place feels run down with very few amenties. The area to dry your hair and put on your makeup had no places to sit. The supplies was very parce and it the area feels dirty and unkept. We will not return to this place and do not recommend it unless major changes are made beginning with an overhaul of the entire area.

Yelp
For a high end hotel, this place definitely does not deliver. Check in was the first thing that left a bad taste... staff says our room is not ready. I'm sure they have a ton of rooms since it's already late afternoon but she just doesn't want to move us to a room that's ready. When our room was finally ready, I had to go back in line and wait to check in a second time. And their key machine was down. Staff says ER can be escorted to our room and the key will be sent up. Two hours later, no key. As we were leaving the hotel for dinner, I stopped by the front desk to see if key machine is working. Sure enough, it is. Why didn't they send the key up but I have to go get them? So I had to check in a third time for the key. Front desk service was really, really bad. Room wise, it's meh.. smelled like old house, robe in room was rough, AC is loud, some sound coming from downstairs (we're on 4th floor), even a freaking fly in the room. Huge, huge disappointment.

Yelp
THIS IS ABOUT THE CLUB AT THE CLAREMONT If you are a tennis player, beware that new management, Ohana Real Estate Investors have bought this property. This club, renowned for the quality and array of its tennis programs will be losing two key courts permanently. Already the membership is frustrated by the lack of access to enough courts due to one court being "temporarily" replaced by an outdoor gym since the pandemic and another is now mostly used for pickleball. Ohana Management is NOT listening to membership and is planning to permanently remove tennis courts in order to build a third pool. They don't realize Berkeley does not have a sunny year round temperature like many of their other properties and that the tennis community wants an array of programs and access to courts! The new ownership has not responded to our requests to meet or to comments. Many of our long time tennis players are looking at options to leave the club in the next 12-18 months.

Yelp
Never ever hold your event at Claremont. They charge you so much and they don't deliver at all. They forgot to serve our drinks. Their gratuity is so high, yet they assigned an slow server for our event. The tea was so dark that no one could drink it. When asked to bring hot water, it was warm water. How is it that a hotel does not know how to brew tea. Terrible place to hold event.

Yelp
Spa Day 5 stars Parking is not good and is the reason for overall 4 star review. Note: Limited Parking A lot of the parking g spots have been converted to outdoor dining. Valet parking little to none. The attendant wasn't even there when I arrived. Parking is not cheap but the good news is that the Spa Validates 5 hours parking Chris was my masseuse. Chris did a remarkable job at kneading out the stress knots in my upper back and even more of a fantastic job of massaging my gluts... OMG!!!! Spa facility was clean and had attentive attendants to assist with any of my needs. I was disappointed with k see that a couple of the showers had been removed from the walls. The spa requires masks and proof of vaccination, however I did see a few ladies without mask in the hot tub and steam room area. While relaxing in the hot tub, the strategic location of the hot tub allows for a beautiful view, the scenery was magnificent! Birthday Spa day was a hit!!!! I had a Late lunch/ early Dinner and it was also good. I enjoyed the grilled Branzino fish and a yummy side of Asparagus with toasted shiitakemushrooms they tasted just like bacon. So good! I had an awesome experience. Thanks Fairmont at Claremont. This reminded me of those beautiful days I've spent here in the pass and only tells me that I need to do it more often.

Yelp
We came here to celebrate my son's graduation and I requesting during the booking process an indoor table with a view and that is what we got. It was the brunch menu and everything was good. Special mention about the waiting staff who were particularly attentive. Clearly it is a location that is iconic and breath taking. It was so sweet to see that some customers were regulars. A must. Oh and whilst you leave take a stroll in the garden.

Yelp
Jeremy, the bellman/parking attendant is extremely helpful....great personality always smiling and greeting the guests. He makes us feel important as he goes out of his way to assist guests and we look forward to seeing him when we return.

Yelp
Stayed at the hotel and visited the spa as well. Starting with the hotel - the history of this place is A.Mazing..... Take some time to wander the halls and view the artwork and historical pictures. Rooms - very comfortable - especially the beds. Duvets... reading lights embedded in the headboards... yes, please! Here for a conference and the staff is very accommodating. Now on to the spa - I called and requested an appt - nothing available. However, I asked to be put on waiting list in case someone cancelled. And - yes! They had cancellations. The spa called me promptly the next morning and got me in for massage. Wow.... If you are staying at the hotel - make sure you take advantage of all of the spa amenities..... Steam shower Jacuzzi (spectacular view) Shoulder massage shower Relaxing waiting room (spend some time to lounge and check out the 2016 Claremont Hotel book) Now... if you do decide to get a massage - Request Jamie!!!! No kidding - this is what bumped me to 5 stars on this review. I should have done an 80 min massage.... Not kidding....

Yelp
Yesterday we attended a holiday tea which was so Disappointing. For this price everything should have been fresh instead of made the day before. Stale and more stale. Very unacceptable for a fairmont. The savior was the waiter, the manager and the ambiance. The manager was very accommodating and understanding. Unfortunately we will most likely never return.

Yelp
We stayed at the Claremont and we were sadly disappointed. We arrived in our room and had no water for coffee or to drink. It took over 30 min to receive any water. Room service is not offered during the day - no one eats lunch anymore? Then when we went to get some food at the restaurant downstairs it took over 30 min for a disgusting salad. Then we checked out. We left our bottle of champagne in our room a beautiful bottle of Veuve and of course when we called in they "couldn't find it." The staff probably took it which is absolutely absurd! For a Fairmont - this disappoints. I'd skip this place.

Yelp
The staff seems nice enough but is in way over their head. Front desk staff and even front desk manager not up to the job. Also the decor needs a refresh. Did not help that my tiny room view was blocked by construction scaffolding.

Yelp
I went for holiday high tea with my friends this Sunday. For $165.00 including tax per person, I expected to have something decent. The teas were good. Service was okay but not high class hotel service. All of the pastries were stale. The carb slider, only half of the tiny bread was filled with crab salad. For the mini sandwiches, the bread was so stale that it was curved up. Disgusting.....

Yelp
Came here for Saturday brunch. Noisy and crowded. Everything was pretty mediocre. Don't bother.

Yelp
I haven't been here to eat in some time. I was shocked at the changes: the staff wasn't particularly pleasant, service was slow for a non-packed restaurant, couldn't get coffee due to poor server skills, the food was sooo overpriced for the quality/preparation, and the brunch menu was so tiny there wasn't anything I particularly wanted to eat. $150+ for three light eaters with no alcohol. Won't be going back ever again. Almost any restaurant in Berkeley is better at a lower price. Truly a complete rip off.

Yelp
Had a great stay at the Claremont. Great recently renovated rooms and views. Special shout-out to Poonam who went way out of her way to find the perfect room upgrade for my Wife and I. Great customer service!

Yelp
Our family came here since they offered an outdoor skating rink and we wanted to try somewhere new with amazing view of the bay. The view was awesome! The skating rink is tiny, but not over crowded. $20/adult and $4 for skates. kids were $8 + $4 for skates. They also had a nice drinking area outdoor and an outdoor canopy with lovely chairs. My 5 star review is for the amazing service we received from the young lady who took care of us when we ordered pizza after we were done. She kindly took our order, brought it to the chef who was pretty far away and then she even validated my ticket and brought everything to us with plates and utensils. Service with a smile too. That's hospitality at its finest and we weren't even hotel guests. This tells me I need to stay here when the time comes to take my wife here for a spa treatment or just a staycation in the Bay Area.
