"The Clarke’s chain was once mighty, with locations in Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Evanston, Rogers Park, and Lakeview. The restaurant’s heyday in the ‘90s, before Wi-Fi, and its menu wasn’t anything terribly novel: burgers, salads, wraps, and more. But hordes of DePaul, Loyola, and Northwestern students, along with after-bar revelers, crowded into this space on a regular basis." - Naomi Waxman, Ashok Selvam

It was empty for a Sunday. Food was mediocre...service was ok...it was empty and we got seated quickly...they gave a lot of food on the breakfast meal. I had a cup of chicken soup...chicken was tough. I figured I couldn't go wrong with that. They didn't have crackers...but the girl brought me out some toast for no extra charge. Give her a plus for trying.

Food was OK - nothing special, and the prices are reasonable. My service was awful. My wife and I ordered two breakfast meals which the waitress didn't write down, and (shocker!) I got scrambled eggs instead of fried eggs and the wrong kind of toast. The eggs were fixed promptly enough but when the toast came I just said screw it and ate. One mistake is understandable, but two? After not writing it down? That's just pure laziness. If your service is going to be that bad, your food ought to be better.

This was my first time here and I have to admit I wish I would have based my choice of trying this place out from the reviews I read prior to coming on Yelp and not taken chance. Upon walking though the door the service was terrible. The young lady who seated us had no customer service at all and was very unpleasant like she would rather be somewhere else. She didn't introduce her self nor did she give us a warm hand off to our waiter. She was also dressed as if she was at home, not working in a professional establishment by wearing mini shorts, a t-shirt, flip flop sandals and her weave hanging all over the place. After choosing a place to sit we had to move 3 times because all of the tables were dirty. I asked the waiter if he could wipe the table he said or I can sit somewhere the table was clean. He was a lot more pleasant than the lady but now I'm ready to leave. The menu had the wrong description of certain food items that didn't match the title of choice, such at the "waffles and wings". I wouldn't recommend a soul to visit this establishment unless the management taught the staff some proper etiquette.

I have been to this location about three times in the past two weeks, all mediocre service but decent food but this last time will definitely be my last. We all ordered burgers, my mother and I had patty melts requested to be medium well. Food arrives and our patty melts are clearly overcooked no sign of pink at all, gray and dry. I motioned for our server he comes over and I told him our burgers were overcooked. After about 10 minutes in the back, he comes back with the SAME two plates we sent back stating that they wouldn't re-cook our burgers. We asked for the manager and the server says he's going to tell you the same thing I just told you. I said "I didn't ask you that, send him over." The manager comes over and is not accommodating at all and proceeds to debate with me about the way a medium well burger should look (what ever happened to the customer is always right), so I say we don't want the burgers, he takes our plates doesn't offer any additional compensation or ask if we want something else just leaves us sitting there. Then I asked for the check and the patty melts are still on there, you've got to be kidding me?!?! There was no way in hell i was paying 20 for two burgers i didn't even eat. This is the worst service I have ever received at any establishment and i definitely won't be returning

I really enjoy coming to Clarke's. The service tends to be slow, even when there isn't a full restaurant but the wait staff is usually really nice about it. Might be a kitchen thing. This is a classic diner with classic diner food and a huge menu. Everything I've had is good. The gyro is amazing! Huge portion. I always take half home for later. The breakfast is good. Maybe the best part is that it's open 24 hours!! Love that :)

Decent food, crappy desserts, TERRIBLE service. The waitstaff is very disorganized here. The best one is the Mexican/Asian Guy who is so sweet and hard working. Clarke's could be a lot better with some simple improvements to the serving process. Hopefully I can give a better rating when they have their act together

I have never been to this restaurant before, but might I say the food is absolutely delicious. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and diner all day. Their desserts are awesome. You could purchase a whole cake if you’d like. I ordered the tilapia tacos and it was delicious. I have never had tilapia tacos before and I am now hooked. It was seasoned so well, I couldn’t stop eating. The place is really clean and well kept. The furniture is a little old, but I think it is the theme of the restaurant. The service was really good. The waiters were really nice and the food did not take forever to come out. I would definitely recommend going to Clark’s in Hyde Park Chicago.

Alright so let me start off this review by saying I haven't been to Clarke's since it was closed down for a bit. I would always get the same thing every time;the buffalo chicken on a bun with fries. It was always so good...until my visit today. I got my order to go,but I should've known something was going to go wrong when I came in and they had a sign on the register that said 'no refunds or exchanges'. First of all,the fries are awful. Barely any soft potato from these shoestring fries. They used to have steak fries but I figured I could live with it. On that note, the sandwich had barely any sauce on it. Back in the good 'ol days, the chicken would be drenched in sauce. I'm thinking it'll probably still be alright considering I like plain chicken just fine. I take one bite and that sandwich was drier than the Sahara desert!!!!! I have never had drier chicken in my life! I had to keep taking sips of water to moisten it just to force it down. At least the lettuce was keeping it kind of moist...but wait...lo and behold I see a small dead grey bug just chilling on the lettuce. At this point I've just about had it. I didn't even finish my fries, but kept looking at my food on the way home. All of a sudden,I look at part of the bun from the sandwich I didn't finish and there was a black hair on it! I was so livid that I wanted to cry. I wanted my $10 back and some alone time to puke and regret my recent life choices. On a positive note, the hostess that served me was very nice and polite. She didn't even charge me for the little cup I wanted to get a beverage in. But that in no way shape or form makes up for the atrocious meal I had today! If you're really craving Clarke's,try another location, because this one doesn't deserve the time of day.
