20 of Chicago’s Most Beloved Closed Diners | Eater Chicago

"The Clarke’s chain was once mighty, with locations in Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Evanston, Rogers Park, and Lakeview. The restaurant’s heyday in the ‘90s, before Wi-Fi, and its menu wasn’t anything terribly novel: burgers, salads, wraps, and more. But hordes of DePaul, Loyola, and Northwestern students, along with after-bar revelers, crowded into this space on a regular basis." - Naomi Waxman

Recently moved to this side of town And have been to Clark’s 3 times in less than two weeks. Breakfast and lunch items are all great. The cheese casserole is something else! Excellent brisket. Never remember to take a picture of plate before it’s gone! Michelle and Jennifer are fantastic!

Delicious food, great service, nice atmosphere. Staff works hard and is very friendly. I recommend the brisket stackhouse

Google
Fun old school diner feel. Staff welcomed you upon entering, and the service was quick. Food came out hot and just as I ordered. The portions are huge, enough for two meals! The biscuits and gravy, along with the potatoes, were delicious. May not look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. It's definitely worth a stop!

Wasn't aware of Clark's Diner for some time. After searching for restaurants in the area, Clark's came up in the search. Reviews looked good, so we tried it. The amount of food on your plate was enough for two. We both brought food home. Staff was pleasant and attentive. Looking forward to our next visit!

Food was excellent, the server was very nice and it's got a cool 50's vibe.

Google
A Wonderful nostalgic diner with friendly people and delicious food! We recommend the brisket sandwich and cheese potato casserole. So good! The root beer in the glass bottle topped off the meal!

No baby changing station, waitress yelled at us from behind the counter to find a seat when the sign says to wait to be seated. I also watched this same waitress yell at other customers for various things and then say ‘it’s not my fault they ask me to do the dirty work’ wish I knew what her name was but she doesn’t wear a name tag. Food took FOREVER to come out and I had to put my baby in his car seat on the floor.

We stopped in for lunch as first-timers that come to New Ken from time to time, and wow! This diner knocked it out of the park. As others have said, it doesn’t look like much from the outside but it has a very cozy diner atmosphere inside. I had the Junkyard burger (brisket, bbq, bacon) and fries and this thing was enormous, juicy, and delicious. My wife got the country side breakfast combo which was also huge, big heaps of potatoes, fresh biscuits and gravy, perfectly cooked eggs. Prices were more than reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. The service was also great, we never had to ask for refills and were taken care of. We will definitely come back here when we’re in the area again. It hit the spot on all levels! No photos to post because we inhaled everything 😋

Yelp
I enjoyed the black, red, and white decorations of this intimate retro diner. I ordered a buffalo chicken salad for lunch. my favorite dressing is blue cheese, but they didn't have any on the menu so I got ranch. Being in western PA, the salad had to have french fries on it, obviously, the buffalo sauce was just hot enough to make my nose a little, but not too hot to overshadow the flavor of the other parts of the salad. The one thing I didn't like, and it's a pet pet of mine, others may not have a problem with it, is that they serve the dressing in cups and put the plastic cups in the salad. I've never been a fan of that even if it does make it easier for the server to carry - just put the cups on the side of the salad for me please. Again I realize that's a personal preference and not indicative of the quality of the food. I definitely will come back

Yelp
Excellent Diner. Ordered through DoorDash. Very Large portions! Had the breakfast quesadilla, corned beef hash and cheese casserole. Nice old fashioned skillet cooking. Can't beat it! It's nice to have a local breakfast diner like our neighboring towns..

Yelp
Poorly run business. Food is mediocre at best. Same for service. Use to be a lot better. Good has a last resort, but there are other better restaurants close by.

Yelp
The full Pittsburgh experience. Don't judge a book by its cover. Divey on the outside. Better on the inside. Clark's Diner served unexpectedly above-average food. Since it was straddling the brunch and lunch hour, we ordered an omelette and a burger. Both were pretty tasty. The interior is your classic diner, clean and really local-yocal friendly service.

Yelp
Breakfast portion size and price doesn't add up , one piece of toast which was end of loaf small , eggs small sausage was very good tho , bacon undercooked . 3 bucks for a small cup of coffee . Overall not worth 40 bucks and tip for 2 people to eat breakfast it's kind of ridiculous actually . Do better Clark's do better . Staff friendly but can get same breakfast for half amount at Denny's or eatnpark

Yelp
We ate lunch. The shrimp basket special and a Rueben sandwich. The shrimp was piping hot. There could have been a little more corn beef on the Rueben But it was seasoned perfectly and nicely grilled. There were a lot of fries included with both meals. The service was quick and friendly. The prices were fair.

Yelp
Been there again, twice and service was terrible, hot roast beef was sliced lunch meat, instant mashed potatoes and bagged gravy. When I complained to them on messenger, the owner called me an internet troll. Well, I won't be going back !!!

Michael K.

Yelp
They have good food. Good french toast. You guys are so good. Love their food five star

Yelp
Good food, nice old school diner atmosphere. 21 dollars for scrambled eggs w/cheese, bacon, potatoes, toast and pancakes. And a sweet tea. A bit pricey imo but I will return. All the wait staff was very kind.

Diane D.

Yelp
Sooooo much food, so little time . Now open Mondays, yay. Gotta give these people a medal for enduring the construction and staying the course. Tanya the star cook and all the staff out on the floor Good go y'all.

Yelp
The food was tremendous!!! Delicious corned beef has and for me chambersburg peach French toast, yum! Large portions and great prices. Only downside they cooked over medium eggs too hard, no dippy left. Still delicious! The coffee both regular and decaf tasted like hot water, and adding cream didn't help. Should definitely upgrade the coffee. The sweet tea was wonderful! Not too sweet, had decent to good flavor, really to correct that was delicious. Service was wonderful too, they welcomed you when you walked in the door just like old Waffle Houses used to do. Cook did a great job on breakfast.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been here in years. I think the last time I was here it was Babe's Cafe if memory serves. This spot was recommended to me because of their cheese hash-browns. I would up ordering a club sandwich that was grilled and pretty tasty. I did order a side of the potatoes and I did think they were pretty good. The cheese was melted evenly and both sides of the potatoes were browned well and were nice and crispy. My mom got breakfast and made her eggs just how she likes them, steamed, and she was pretty pleased with her bacon too. Overall, it was a pretty good brunch and a nice change from just the regular spots around here. I also think that in comparison, the food just generally seems better than an Eat N Park or a Denny's. I'd certainly come back another time.

Yelp
I couldn't be more pleased with the breakfast at this diner. The atmosphere was very welcoming and our server seemed genuinely pleased to be serving us. The diner was clean and felt like a classic diner, which is exactly what I was looking for. The food was delicious, adequately portioned, and very reasonably priced. Our server was very attentive and service-minded. When visiting family in this area, this will be my go-to breakfast spot.

Yelp
Very good food and service is good!! Great old fashioned diner and decor!! Great prices!!!

Yelp
Friendly staff! Good diner food! Alittle confusing though because the signs outside say crouse and everyone's shirts say Clark! Consistent branding is key and way less confusing for the client! I ordered the chicken sandwich with bacon and it was yummy! The fries are also very good. Nice place to have a meal locally that isn't cookie cutter franchise with overly processed items....good ole American diner ;)

Chef Stanley L.

Yelp
Wow. Wow. Wow. Food was Dynamite, Service was excellent and prices were reasonable. Repeat business for me and my family for sure.

Yelp
Great food, great prices, nice folks work there. Support the good locals! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Made a quick stop for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised to find a big change in the menu. All ingredients are fresh made to order, I had the Philly cheese wrap it was loaded with steak, peppers & onions as well as Swiss cheese. Way to big to eat the entire serving but happy to take the remainder home. There is a new owner and it shows!!! I will become a loyal customer once again. If you have not tried Clarks I urge you to do so it is worth the drive, & come hungry

Yelp
Clark's diner was very clean and the service was fantastic. The wait stuff was very attentive, keeping my coffee filled. I had a very good meat lovers omelette, with the puzzling exception of putting fake cheese slices on top. They were half melted and completely overpower the omelette with the fake taste. Luckily, it was able to be scraped to the side and the omelette itself was still very enjoyable. I'd go back 100%.

Yelp
I'm working in the area and have gone here many times with clients. The food is always good as well as the service. We have never been disappointed.

Yelp
Can not speak for anything except for breakfast. As a family we have stopped in for breakfast on a few occasions. Each time that food was wonderful and reasonably priced. I plan on coming back again!
