Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen

Overall my experience was okay. I came in on a Friday night and it was busy, to be expected. They have a nice waiting area in the back of the restaurant. There a couch, table, and a few chairs which is a nice touch and change from a waiting area near a front door. The restaurant isn’t big, and with it so packed of people it’s not super easy to move around. It also gets very loud with everyone in there. Not ideal for having a conversation over dinner. The service was good, although our bartender/waitress had forgotten to put in part of our order. To start we had the special which was a cracker crust pizza. It was good. I wish the sausage had been sliced thinner and the toppings were not evenly placed on the pizza. Some slices didn’t get much and were basically just cheese. For main dishes I ordered the sweet potato ragu, also a special. It reminded me of curry. It was spicy and well made. I loved the bread served with it too. My only issue was the rice on the bottom of the plate appeared to be sitting in a lot of liquid. I wish the curry sauce had been served seperate from the rice itself. My boyfriend ordered the tri tip steak, could med/rare. This wasn’t great. It was another special. The steak itself was really chewy. The loaded mashed potatoes though were good. To go we got our Mac and Cheese since it didn’t come out with our meal. Honestly it was okay. Too much nutmeg for my taste personally. The half size is a big portion too. Easily big enough to share. We also got a cheesecake to go. I did not like how it was served in a soup cup to go. And it seemed like a small portion. Taste wise it was average. Cocktails: state fair lemonade. It was strong, and I needed a lot more lemon juice in mine. But it was good. Union draft Marg was really tasty and I would recommend trying it. Overall I would come back and try new items. Our meal cost $100 not including tip and I don’t really know if it was worth the price.

Bummer of an experience. We went around 3pm on a Saturday and it was not too busy. We found our table to be unsanitary and seemed to have staining throughout the top. The beer menu QR code is not updated on the menu. The waitress was transparent and let us know the appetizer we wanted would not be out shortly so no point in ordering it. If you order lobster Mac n cheese it comes out in a half order size and it is $26.. that was a huge let down for the price when you can order the Mac n cheese full order for $21 and it’s twice as big. Lobster Mac comes with a roll and ours was frozen and super tough like it was days old. The Panino sandwich was on bread harder than a rock and was not enjoyable one bite. It actually was so rough the roof to our mouth is hurting. Now for drinks.. it’s hard to pay $13 for a mule that comes in a can when you can have fresh ones made at a bar for that amount. The manager did speak to us and apologized but actions taken were minimal. Ended up with a $85 before tip bill for something that we barely enjoyed. The workers stated a menu change is coming and I wish them the best in the future. Not sure if I’d come back being the best items I had was the OG Mac and a beer.

Was referred by a friend to try this place, and I’m so glad I did! We started with the chicken dip which was great! Our server Amanda suggested adding hot sauce if we like a little kick of spice, and it took it to the next level. Very cool they had many condiment options on the table at our leisure to try. As for entrees, I got the “new and improved” meatloaf (also suggested to try) and I will say, I never would normally think to get meatloaf out for dinner, but it was the star of the show for me. My husband chose the Cuban sandwich, which he loved as well, had a nice little spice to it with the chilies. We did get the Mac n cheese also, which was very good, I see why they are known for it! We were told there will be some new seasonal items coming soon, interested to try!! Overall left very full and happy! We will definitely be back!

The Sunday brunch at the Union is amazing! My wife and I went last week and had the best time and the best food. The bartender, Jonathon, makes the best drinks and definitely makes Sunday a fun day! I had the salmon plate and my wife had the cracker crust pizza. We loved them both! The only bad thing about the experience was that I had to work on Monday! I would give 6 stars if I could!!

I have a picky scale. Very few restaurants get 5 Stars from me. Their Mac-n-Cheese is almost as good as my wife's baked Mac.. its pretty good they've sold some 1.8M Mac entrees since 1995. That's almost $5M in net profit likely from this menu item alone. They have a good staff and keep the menu updated.

This was our first visit & we hope to return! Loved the casual & friendly atmosphere along with great food & service too. We stopped in for lunch & tried the Mac & cheese, Cubano sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes, & a generous side salad, would recommend all

We stopped in for my wife’s birthday dinner last night & our server Jonathon had some great suggestions! The beer selection was plentiful, the Pom Pom martini was delicious and the special corn bread waffle with pork was yummy!! Definitely give the ice cream sandwiches a chance, it’s a perfect way to finish off dinner!

I stopped in at the union this past week for lunch and Jonathon was our bartender. He made us a delicious espresso martini and suggested the grilled cheese with the new sweet potatoes, they were a great suggestion! Definitely stop in to check out their new menu additions

The macaroni and cheese is phenomenal. The prices are on the higher end for the area, but worth every dime. The staff was super friendly and had great suggestions for the menu. Quick service and fantastic ambiance - I love the vibe of this place. The pews are so comfortable. Great place for dates and family meals.

We've been to The Union a handful of times now, and are typically very pleased with our experience! We have ordered various items such as the Mac and cheese (with pulled chicken and pulled pork), the bbq pork sliders, and the house salad. Everything is good, but nothing tops the mac!! The interior is cozy and unique. The service is always pretty nice, too!

We accidentally went here thinking it was something else. Super busy. We tried their Mac, I'm sure it's good to most, but we personally didn't care for a seasoning in it.

Not my best experience here. I've been to Clarkston Union several times but tonight just was not good. Our server was fast and pleasant but the food took a really long time and the restaurant was not that busy. I ordered the Tuna Bella rare and it came out well done. The lettuce was mostly the white part that you throw away. My girlfriend's dinner tasted like it sat too long under a heat lamp. The Mac n cheese was good.

Gluten free options!! Amazing Mac and cheese and they have gluten free too! Johnathan is the best server you'll ever have. He is always very attentive and friendly. Recommend!! Please always call before you head up to make sure they have Mac and cheese left! They go quick. Love the ambiance and the church vibes.

Huge selection of beers on tap to choose from! Openings at the bar while waiting on your table to become available. We were told 25 minute wait at 6 o'clock on a Friday which isn't bad. We waiting only about 15 minutes. Great selection of food to pick from. We had Mac & Cheese, the Panini Sandwich, and 2 cheeseburgers. Everything was very good. We haven't been here in quite a while and after this evening we wondered why? We shall return!!

Always a good spot for some comfort food. Can not say enough about the MAC-N-CHEESE hands down the best in town.

Went to celebrate A birthday and Cinco de Mayo. Not the place for this but Honcho's was booked. The appetizer corn chip and Salsa was ok. The salsa gets a 10. The broken to smithereens corn chips gets a Minus 2. Had our waitress paid a little closer attention and came right back , They We would of, I would of sent them back. They got eaten any way as the kids devoured them and we picked through to find a few that could hold salsa. Off to a bad start. Salsa is extra too for $3 but a lot of restaurants do that and theres was worth it. Sandwiches such as the Jalepeno pulled pork had maybe 3 large teaspoons of meat. Not much for $16.95 each. My Union Reuben of corn beef was (3) sliced lunch meat and tasted like it too $17.75 not worth the trouble. We order a pizza with cheese for one of the kids who would not eat it. Theres a hint. Kids chicken nuggets got devoured by the other child. We ordered 4 margaritas for $40 bucks and salt on the rim must be extra as we git none. No waitress again. There was good tequila in there though. The veggie portobello caprese I heard was very good! The roasted potatoes were bland. Period. The Potatoe salad was excellent. Service by Anna was a 3, We tip 20% regardless of service. Those waitresses have to put up with a lot. I know Mc Donalds is expensive but to lay out $200 for 4 adults and 2 kids makes the value of this place less appealing then a Happy meal. Too many better places along the block and the city I might add, than to go back here.

I've been coming here for years with the family, and always loved it. Don't get me wrong, the food is still wonderful. Service was friendly, and atmosphere is great. But it was so disappointing to show up on a Sunday and find out it was brunch only. I know that brunch has it's place. But if I am forced to have brunch after around 11 a.m., I don't like that. I specifically knew I wanted the cobb chopped salad and an order of chips and salsa to go. I was unable to get these items (or any of the usual comfort foods on their normal menu). The trip to Clarkston Union is one to two times a year (after the tree farm in late November and occasionally in the summer if in the area) and I guess I never paid attention to the fact that we have never gone on a Sunday. It reminds me of the time my daughter and I went to another restaurant at 1 or 2 p.m. and they were only serving brunch. She was unable to get the vegetarian chili that we specifically went there for. Anyway, I will say that (everyone knows this if they've been there), the mac and cheese is amazing. Next year we will be sure to go on a Friday or Saturday, but I suppose that's my fault for not checking. Not sure what the obsession with brunch is at some places.

Seems like we always make our way to Clarkston and the Union every trip to Detroit even though it's gotta be 30/40 minutes out of the city. We flew into Detroit for a family visit last week and went to The Union on our way to family house. The food is always lights out and that day was no different! Chicken noodle soup was outrageous. Of course we got the famous Mac n Cheese, two orders actually as one was for us and. The other to take along to the house and share. The surprise winner though was the homemade meatloaf! Maybe the best I've ever had, top 2 at the very least.Thanks for the great meal and see y'all next time.

We dropped in for an early dinner! Service was friendly and efficient. Overall a great selection on tap. We had the portobello caprese and backyard burger! No complaints. I'll be back. .

This is one of the food good quality places in Clarkston. Recommend the meat loaf or pot pie (it's very creamy so I personally have to avoid it). Staff is good and they take reservations online which is great. Huge beer list and great cocktails.

Ordered the pistachio papparadelle pasta and it was absolutely delicious! Mac n cheese is amazing as always.

I had been wanting to try this place and also Woodshop for a while now - we tried Honcho before the last Pine Knob concert, owned by the same people/company, which was also good. I snagged a reservation for Union Bar and Kitchen about a week before our BNL concert. The restaurant used to be a church, which is pretty cool - some of the seats are pews. We ended up getting sat at this huge booth (with pews) even though it was just myself and a friend. We both ordered a Bomb Pop, which was delicious - it had cherry vodka and a few other liquors in it - as well as the chips and salsa to split. The salsa was an interesting pinkish red color but not spicy. You get a huge portion of chips, so much so that we took the rest to-go. My friend is a gluten-free vegetarian and we had scoped out its gluten-free menu before arriving - you can do their famous mac & cheese GF, or the grilled cheese sandwich with brie. She got the sandwich and said it was very good. It also comes with a side salad, which was a big portion. I got the Cubano which was fantastic - it had ham, Swiss, and also pulled pork from the Woodshop. It also came with a huge portion of potatoes, which I wasn't expected, and unfortunately I hadn't brought an ice pack or anything with me so I wasn't able to bring most home. Overall the food here was very good, so I would come again, although I still want to try Woodshop. Waitservice was good too although I did have to wait for a water refill, albeit not that long. The atmosphere was also pretty cool, and I would recommend making a reservation - we got right in with one, otherwise especially on Pine Knob concert days, I think it can be a long wait.

The go to for the best mac and cheese but make sure to add pulled pork. It's so delicious. When my cousin who is gluten free visits she always wants to stop in for their gluten free mac and cheese. Service was a little delayed and didn't visit us as much as we would've liked but could've been worse. I like they repurposed a church and made it a cool place to eat and get some drinks. Always lots of beer and drinks to choose from.

We went here because of all the hype with kid rock and guy fieri. We went on a Sunday afternoon when they have brunch. We didn't realize it was a limited menu until 3 on Sundays. Only two people in our group of 9 liked the food. That was the French toast and burrito. I had biscuits and gravy with sausage patties. Sausage patties were very dry and gross. The biscuits were bad with maybe a 1/2 cup of gravy on 3 biscuits. I doused the gravy in pepper to try and get some flavor. The staff was nice. Waitress was polite and kept the coffees full. Food was very disappointing. Even the brunch Mac n cheese was bad. Two in our group got the Mac n cheese and neither liked it. It was almost like it had been sitting out all day and not fresh. We might try again when it's their normal lunch/dinner menu. I really wanted to try the lobster Mac.

we have been going to the Union for many years, and we are never disappointed! the specials are amazing, as well as the "usual " entrees (mac & cheese). the staff are wonderful and provide great service too!

i have always enjoyed my dining experience at the union, however, the wait time for seating and service can be improved. as always, the mac and cheese with lobster was a fan favorite and i thoroughly enjoyed the chicken and apple salad (a special). the dressing was perfect! of course the ambience is inviting and lots for your eyes to look at while enjoying some delicious eats. good job guys! check them out - huge list of beers as well!

The food was delicious although it's a little loud inside. The staff was super friendly and service didn't take too long. I love this restaurant although I did learn my parents made out at a corner of this restaurant.

Place is great. Look awesome. Mac & cheese was ok. Pot pie I think it need more veggies but that just me but it was good. Drink was yummy (ginger beer). "Mac sauce" is yummy. Server was awesome and friendly. Got sat down quickly. Was a good place I'd go again.

To be honest, this place was just ok. To start, the parking sucks. Be prepared for that. The atmosphere is loud. Like, really loud. Idk if it's the acoustics of the place, or what. Also, I really hate sitting one foot away from the table next to me - the tables are so close that when one of the workers cleaned the table next to us, she managed to spray my son and I with whatever disinfectant she was using. Good thing our food hadn't arrived yet, eh? Service was prompt, and the food was good. My son loved the lobster mac, though I thought that the portion size was rather small for $20. My chicken pot pie was delicious, though, with a perfectly flaky crust and the mashed potatoes were a nice accompaniment. The tap beer selection was too heavy on the IPAs. Need to add a little more variety. No lagers or pilsners? Glad that I finally tried this place, but it's doubtful I'll return.

Located in an old church with lees and all. Friendly staff and interesting menu. They had a variety of sandwiches, Mac and cheese, burgers, and pot pies. We had a delicious olive tapenade appetizer with feta and garlic aioli. When we asked for more bread - no worries - they brought us more than we originally got ! Had a friend with us who has soy allergy and the waitress was knowledgeable with the way items made and verified with the kitchen. Yummy meal! Friendly and fast service! Great atmosphere. Definitely would come back when I'm in the neighborhood.

Food was really good and fairly priced. We arrived around 9:30 AM for breakfast on a Sunday and were seated at the last available spot wedged in between two other parties. Very loud place. Hard to hear waitress and my guest. I'd go again during the week to sit at the bar where maybe the noise level could be better.

This place is great - good service, fast drinks and food, fresh and hot. It was very crowded on a Sunday early evening before a concert - apparently, lots of us had the same idea. But service was great and the food was delicious. We had a variety of things - a Cuban sandwich, 2 different salads, and the lobster mac and cheese. My steak salad was absolutely perfect, and their homemade red wine vinaigrette is super tasty. Also, the mac and cheese is every bit as good as everyone says it is! That crunchy, cheesy topping is the stuff dreams are made of, and it's so creamy inside with perfectly cooked penne pasta. I love all of their restaurants, but downtown Clarkston is so cute and this experience was so good that I'd come back just to visit here again, and I'll always come before a concert!

What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be! It has all the marks of a restaurant made out of what used to be an old fashioned church. They specialize in macaroni and cheese and they have a counter on the wall for the number of servings that Have gone on to peoples tables since 1995. This turned out not to be bluster as it was literally the best macaroni and cheese I have ever had. It was beautifully seasoned But wait there's more! I ordered the meatloaf with a side of vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was the best meatloaf I have ever ordered in a restaurant. The vegetables were the best that I have ever ordered at a restaurant. And the mashed potatoes had a wonderful garlic taste to them that match up with any other restaurant I have been to This place has a full bar and an assortment of neat specialty cocktails I went in expecting that this would be a good to great modern dining experience I really didn't expect that this place would be a contender for my favorite restaurant in the state but it came close enough to make it a recommended destination to anyone hoping to find a new gem!

Well, they claim to have amazing mac n cheese... as a guy who really isn't a mac n cheese fan..... is was bomb! Hot, cheesy, crunchy where needed.. Definitely need to have it if you go. We also had the chicken pot pie... very good. Hot as can be (one of my biggest complaints usually), big chunks of chicken, veggies.. puff pastry top... and a great beer selection. Worthy of a detour for sure, and I'll go back.

Amazing food and ambience! Has great selection for children as well. Portions are large. I had the portobello caprese which has a fantastic pistachio pesto spread. Our waitress Kendra was on point!

It wasn't our first time here but it's been awhile and maybe we were just too excited for take out but it appeared to be overhyped. The Union Mac is top notch, no question, but our other food was just okay, not worth ordering again. I also wish they would've put utensils in the to-go bag (but didn't notice until in my car) because before we were allowed to go inside anywhere my husband and I would just eat in our car for date night, since it was somewhere quiet and kids free. We'll be back, eventually, but are in no rush and would rather try out other establishments.

Another great stop to get some food to go. We got some macaroni and cheese to go and another spot that has great service.

We both had a beer - nice beer selection We ordered the regular Mac and Cheese - it was steaming hot and Good!! That said, Guy should come to my house - my Mac is AMAZING We drove from Cleveland to try. Was it good, sure. But it isn't to die for

Love this place but not tonight. Service was below average, unusual, my entree was poor, eggplant lasagna, burnt, garlic bread inedible. Server never asked though it was obvious I didn't like it, hostess cleared plate without asking questions. Slow service despite restaurant only half full. I expect better from this restaurant, usually awesome experience

Great atmosphere and service was good as well. Our food was hot and tasted really flavorful. Date night approved.

Overrated IMO, wait for a table and food can take a while depending on how busy they are. I suggest getting a resy if pressed for time. Also, my beef with this place is that you really stink when you leave due to the open grill area in the building.

Love their "grilled cheese" sandwich with Brie cheese so decided to try breakfast! The French toast was sooo good, it'd 2 bread rounds with walnuts and a sweet, cinnamon mix in the middle served with maple syrup They served 5 pieces, I could only eat 3! We also got huevos rancheros - there was a little too much cumin in the salsa and beans and wish they'd put the salsa on the side because the tortillas get mushy quickly. Potatoes were good though

Love the jamburger here. The jam taste like bacon and who doesn't love bacon. I also love their macaroni & cheese; it just melts in your mouth. There is a huge draft list and you can always find a local brew on the list. The atmosphere is trendy and romantic; we usually see multiple couples when we go here. It use to be an old church so the decor is very cool. You sit in pews at your table. There is a running counter for how many macaroni & cheese orders they made; it was a ridiculous number and of course they were #1 for how many they made. Everything is accessible; the ramp to get in is kind of steep but it's worth it.

Unfortunately, I feel like this place is overrated. I had the Roasted Turkey sandwich on a baguette. The baguette was so hard I couldn't even bite it without fear of cracking a tooth. I ended up eating it like a salad. I also ordered the broccoli cheese soup which was very greasy, it started to separate. My husband had the sausage trio with the Mac N Cheese which he said was disappointing and overpriced. The Mac N Cheese seemed oily. Two stars for a cool atmosphere but we came here many years ago and the menu seems to be the exact same.

Ambiance -5 very creative use of the pews and layout of the restaurant! Service - 5 friendly efficient kept the water filled and everyone happy Food - 5 our table had meatloaf, chicken pot pie, burger and Mac and cheese. All spectacular- the best side veggies- everything was awesome. This is one of the best meals I have had out in a long time. From the side salad to the mac and cheese it was all amazing!! Thanks for a great experience and all the time and energy you and your team put into a great restaurant!

Charming atmosphere and reliably good food. During busier times I prefer to eat on the patio when possible. It is quieter, even with the traffic.

The food is consistently fantastic. Highly recommend getting a reservation as this place is usually packed. This place allegedly is haunted? My boyfriend said he got goosed by someone or something while we were leaving dinner once and swears no one and nothing was behind him. My only knock is that parking is a bit of a chore. Their parking lot is very small and not the easiest to navigate.

Great food best Mac and cheese. They have the best ice cream sandwich's that you con dip in caramel and chocolate. I love the church setting to.

Kid Rock, Henry Ford, and Valerie Bertinelli lived in this tiny hamlet outside of Detroit. Not together, at least not that I read in the National Enquirer, but they were all connected to the auto industry through family and fortune. I get the attraction as it's damn quaint down to having a main street that's actually called Main Street. This restaurant inhabits an old church with cathedral-height ceilings and even repurposed pews in the booths. Jamie W. took us here as it was a place his dad took him to when he was growing up in nearby Waterford. It's all-American fare here as evidenced by the vintage scoreboard that counts the number of Mac n' Cheese orders they've received since they opened (an impressive 1,116,026 and counting). We decided to start with the $8.50 Smoked Chicken & Spinach Dip, which looked like something my mom would have made back in the sixties from a recipe clipped from a fall issue of Good Housekeeping. Decadently creamy with never-enough tortilla chips (photo: http://bit.ly/2SelRnY). Good but guilt-inducing. I tried to make up for it by ordering the $14.25 Tuna Bella Salad. Satisfying and the tuna was fresh, not out of the can if you were worried. Food was excellent. The famous Mac and cheese did not disappoint, trio of sausages was delicious and the pot pies were a hit in our party. We enjoyed the appetizer special and the ice cream sandwich as well. The place is not quiet but I had no trouble hearing my dining companions the service was good and I like being able to book a table on a Saturday night. Very good value and somewhere I will go back to.

Haven't been to the Union in over a decade, but it was just as good as I remember--great atmosphere, wonderful service, and excellent food. I had a delicious (strong) old fashioned, followed by a GIANT side salad. Salad was great, just the veggies I needed before the giant burger I got! Burger (forgot what it was called) was excellent and cooked perfectly. I sent an empty plate back to the kitchen!! I was so hungry I didn't even take pictures before I cleaned my plates! Go go go!! And definitely try their amazing Mac b cheese at some point--swiped a forkful from my dinner date.

There's something extra refreshing about drinking a cold IPA on a pew in an old church. HIGHLY recommend! Bonus, the food is great too! I usually try whatever is on special because Mac and Cheese isn't my thing.

Mediocre compared to other union locations. The cocktails unfortunately are not good. I had the turkey burger and asked for a side of special sauce, which was kind of sour. Different from their sauce at Vinsetta's garage, which is awesome! Turkey burger was okay, pretty basic. Mac and cheese amazing as always though! Probably the only reason to come here.

Outstanding service. Best Reuben sandwich I ever had. Pulled pork sandwich did not give a choice for people who don't like mayo. You get it no matter what on potato salad and Cole slaw. A vinegar based option would be great. Mac and cheese is amazing. Overall the place is great. Will be back.

The menu is just too boring. It's probably six years ago. They had an amazing dinner special that was a salmon dish that I wish they would put on the menu. And that the service is great. Fabulous beer selection just a boring menu.
