Lucky Oven Bakery in Armatage Has Closed | Eater Twin Cities

"After a year of struggling, I learned that pastry chef Kristy Dirk has shuttered her bakery, Lucky Oven, an adorable little space in Minneapolis’ Armatage neighborhood that opened to an excited public in November of 2017. Early reviews were mixed and peppered with complaints about quality and long service times, but the shop seemed to rally after this summer as families in the residential part of town came for the wall of Easy Bake Ovens and frosting covered cinnamon rolls. According to the Star Tribune, a sign is hung on the front door saying farewell to customers alongside another offering the space for rent; the bakery’s Facebook and web pages give no indication of closure, and calls have gone unanswered." - Joy Summers

Amazing, perfect cuisine in a comfortable, welcoming environment! Great service with truly memorable dishes! I was particularly fond of the cheese pakora: crispy and light with a wonderful flavor, throughout. Just excellent! And the lamb coconut curry I had was so tender it tasted like it had been braised for HOURS! The seasoning had wonderful depth of flavor and left me feeling warm and satisfied.

We recently ordered food for a group of about 45 people, and it was absolutely perfect! The portions were generous and well worth it. We had two large trays of Chicken Tikka and one large plus one medium tray of Chicken Biryani, and both dishes were outstanding. The Chicken Tikka was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The Biryani had all the authentic flavors you’d expect—fragrant rice, well-seasoned chicken, and just the right balance of spices. Since most of our group preferred mild spice, the seasoning was spot-on, making it enjoyable for everyone. The quality, taste, and presentation exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious, authentic Indian food for a large gathering!

Google
Food was fantastic, I wandered in without expectation and it was an incredible meal. In particular the Dahi Puri was wonderful and a really unique taste and texture.

Google
Phenomenal tandoori food here . Best corn chapatis I have ever had. Salmon fish Tikka was exquisite. Wonderful chef. We met Louis and he was combining south American culinary skills to the Indian bread making. Absolutely a must to try this makki ki roti here. We enjoyed everything that we tried.

Google
I went with some friends and we all were happy with our meals. I started off only ordering the behl puri but ended up adding the paper dosa and falooda to my order since the food was so good! I tried some of my friends meals too, the masala dosa, makki ki roti with sarson ka saag, and aloo tikki chaat and would gladly order those too.

Google
I was briefly in town and dropped by for lunch. This is among the best Indian food I've ever had - probably top two. The tandoori shrimp was incredible. Their masala gravy was also delicious - rich and complex flavor. More, my lunch was surprisingly affordable - under $30 after a 20% tip (and I got two meals out of it). Highly recommended.

Google
A must go for Indian food. Very clean, excellent service From Charles (Mr. Smiles : )), and the food is some of the best Indian food in the Twin Cities. Don't let the strip mall location deter you. I have seen countless recommendations lately for very bland and mediocre food at restaurants. This food has a ton of flavor, well seasoned, and prices well. The Peshwari paneer is thick and full of filling. Every dish we tried was delicious and you get a good sized portion. I will definitely be coming back. We tried: Pesheari Naan Chole Bhature Pindi Chana Beef Makhani Kesar Kulfi Keer All excellent. Really liked the Peshwari Naan and Chole Bhature.

Google
Outstanding restaurant which brings to life the exquisite flavors of India through its Clay Oven with a wide range of menu options from street food to requisite menu items like Chana Masala. There are so many choices available, but not enough room in one’s stomach !! Located on Washington Avenue with easy street parking, this is a must see and enjoy new Indian restaurant in Downtown Minneapolis. The food freshness and quality are 10/10; the service is 10/10 (Krishna): the ambiance and cleanliness are 10/10. We started with chutney and papadum which is fresh, crispy, and flavorful. We tried the beautiful Dani Puri : beautiful and tasteful: Chana Masala was exquisite with perfect chana and the masala was not overpowering : the Chicken Tikka was great with fresh chicken and vegetables served on the sizzling platter : the Puri was light and tasty: our dessert was an exquisite icing on the cake . This is our second dining experience at Clay Oven, and we can not wait to return 🙏

Yelp
Wow-- I was very impressed by the food here ! Always hot and fresh and I have been back multiple times since the first time going ! I would highly recommend the pani puri as well as the chicken shahi korma! So much flavor and a great atmosphere. Staff was great service-- including large pours of wine ! can't go wrong with this place ! 11/10! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Amazing food The Chole-Bhatura was the best of the lot Piping hot and so yummy Topped it with a nice Chai, for a very satisfying lunch Prompt and courteous service by the friendly staff

Yelp
Although I don't have much experience with Indian food, I'm really glad I checked this place out. It's a beautiful space with comfortable seating and tasteful decor. There are also spacious gender neutral bathrooms, which I appreciate! The food is flavorful and comforting. You get quite a bit and the prices are reasonable. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for good Indian food!

Yelp
Clay Oven seemed to be one of the best reviewed Indian spots in Minneapolis so I decided to give it a try. When I walked in it was pretty packed and the restaurant itself is actually pretty small. I was seated and we placed our orders. We tried the appetizer plate and it was just OK. I have eaten a lot of samosas in my life and these were pretty average. The pakora was also just OK. For the main dishes I ordered a special lamb dish and a beef curry. I asked for the lamb extra spicy and was disappointed with how mild it was. This is something I run into a lot in Minnesota. It feels like they really tone down the spice even when you ask for it spicier, which is unfortunate since I grew up eating this food and it always feels muted when I try the same dishes here. The flavor itself was pretty good though. The pricing is a bit silly in my opinion. A lot of these restaurants give very small portions for how much it costs. I guess that is because there are not many South Asian spots in Minnesota or Minneapolis in general so they can charge higher than what they probably should. They do have unlimited rice which I liked, and I also tried the butter naan which was good, though that is hard to mess up. The beef curry was also decent but again on the smaller side. Would I try this place again, yes for sure. Is it worth all the hype and the reviews, I do not think so. I have been to some fantastic South Asian restaurants in my life and this one feels OK, but due to its location I understand why it gets such high ratings considering the lack of availability and options in Minneapolis.

Yelp
Food good but portions are tiny for the price. Lots of rice. Little of entree. We did take out which appears popular based on brown bags behind counter waiting for pickup
google avatar

Cameron S.

Yelp
Chicken saag is so well done. Service can be a little slow but it is because everything is fresh. Worth the slight wait. Great fresh atmosphere. Best Indian in the downtown Minneapolis area. 1-7 spice levels. Fairly standard spice range.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. I loved everything I got here. I tried their malai kofta and of course, some naan. Both were so delicious. The kofta was just the perfect amounts of tangy and spicy. Service was great, we picked up our order and it was hot and ready at our pick up time! I'd definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Food and Service are great. We decided to try this place because they offered Indian street food in their menu that we seldom see it in other Indian restaurant. Some of the dishes We tried: Lamb saag - amazing, would love its creamier but it's my personal preference Dahi Puri - never had this before and didn't expected it's cold dish! Biryani - good! Nothing special nothing bad

Yelp
I came in for dinner on a Saturday night when there was a huge event going on at US Bank Stadium and parking rates were all five times the usual. I say this because my main takeaway from my first visit to Clay Oven is that they seemed very prepared to handle a busy dinner shift. I go to the Guthrie a lot and I'm a little embarrassed that I haven't tried to have dinner here sooner. I'll definitely return, probably next time I'm seen an evening Guthrie performance. This time I ordered Beef Vindaloo. It was nicely prepared & tasted really good, although it doesn't set itself apart from Vindaloo anywhere else. Vindaloo can run spicy to a challenging degree so I asked for a spice level of 3-out-of-7. I wish I'd gone spicier. But this is actually good news for anyone who is a little spice-shy; I think this kitchen is gentle in that area. I also got a kind of bread I haven't hat in an Indian restaurant before, Bhatura, which it turns out is like popover bread or Yorkshire pudding. It was cool, I wouldn't mind getting that again. This is in a clean and inviting urban building, and if it wasn't clear in my first paragraph, the service was outstanding. Quick and professional with an abundance of personnel on the floor. And the prices were very fair, which is another factor making me like the idea of coming here for dinner before another event. It's a large menu, which can be a red flag for some foodies, but I'm convinced I'll have a good time exploring it further.

Yelp
Stand by .... .... ..... ...... Stand by .... .... ..... ...... Appetizer. Veggie Samosa - enjoyed the wrap. It was not thick so it did not overpower the potatoes. Lamb Biryani. Marinated Swai Fish dusted w/ Chickpea Flour & Deep Fried... Garlic Naan...

Osmi V.

Yelp
Love this place. Great and super tasty Indian food We got a lot of food, and everything was super delicious. Definitely will come again. The service was great, very courteous, and prompt. Ambiance is not traditionally Indian but it does make it look clean, well lit, modern. Comfortable sitting

Yelp
This place is not good. I am so disappointed by the reviews. Was very excited to try this place out with the high reviews but it is bland and expensive. Overall (C) So I don't mind Americanized Indian food - but this was tasteless. If you have ever had decent Indian food you will be disappointed. Food (C) The garlic naan was burnt on one side and didn't have enough garlicky taste. The keema samosas were decent. The chicken was bland and a small portion. Service (A) This was a bright spot - great service. Very friendly and nice Value (D) $33 bucks out the door for one person - super expensive and a ripoff. Small portion sizes and bad food Advice - if you had never had Indian food in your life you may like this place. But if you have ever had Indian food - skip this place. My recommendation would be to go the other Indian place down the street from them - Spice and Tonic (sp?!?). If this is what passes for excellent Indian food in Minnesota- there is an opportunity to do better. After looking at the reviews I should have believed the negative reviews. Most of the positive reviews were from Elites.

Yelp
What a fun find. We drove past randomly one morning and thought Indian sounded fun so came back for lunch. We were seated right away and ordered so much because we couldn't decide what we wanted. Both chicken dishes were amazing. The naan was chewy and cooked to perfection. The ground chickpea balls were less than great, but that's more personal preference than anything. The smoothies with the special yogurt were not to be missed!

Yelp
We came for lunch on a random weekday and it was decent Indian option. No lunch menu so we ordered off the regular menu. Good for a quick meal with friends or date night. 2 curries (Lamb Rogan Josh and Chicken Makhani) and a roti came out to about $20 per person. The curries are individual portions although they do give you a lot of rice. We saw a few tables who brought their own Tupperware for leftovers. The flavors were good and the servers are helpful in recommending things to try out of their expansive menu. I will need to try their dosas in the future.
google avatar

Amintha R.

Yelp
I am picky about my indian food. I also find the homogonous nature of American indian food boring and not treating the wide range of what indian food could be properly. This menu is extensive. we ordered a lot of things. it was quite good. I would probably have liked it better if I had gotten it spicier but my kiddy was with me so I had to keep it mild. She love love loved the Strawberry Lassi. I would definitely go back to try the food at my prefered spice level. The location looks good and makes you feel comfortable when you walk in. The service was great, I might say they could recomend some foods for kiddo's would be a plus.

Yelp
We always like to visit one Indian restaurant while traveling to a new place. Clay Oven had good reviews, so we decided to stop by for dinner one night. Food was great -- we went for spice level 3 and it was just right for us. We shared tikka masala, a coconut curry veggie dish, stuffed naan (one of the best I've had!) and mango lassis. Clean restaurant and restroom Quick service Nicely appointed/modern decor Short walk to/from the riverfront Large window views onto the street Very busy on a Thursday evening, which we took as a good sign If you're a fan of Indian food, I recommend you stop by.

Yelp
In town for work and was craving Indian. Buddy and I came for dinner tonight. Must say really enjoyed it. Service was great and the food was absolutely on point. So much flavor. Had some papadum with achar (mixed pickle) . So good! Ordered the lamb samosas. Delicate and rich and delicious! For my main I had Lamb Rogan Josh. Now 7 is their hottest level. I ordered 6. I ended up asking for a bowl of fresh chopped hot chilies. I am more of a 10 - 15 spice level kinda guy. lol. Anyway. The Rogan Josh as creamy and so full of flavor. Loved it! Would love to come back for more.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Indian food! I got the Rogan Josh and it's one of the best I've ever had. Not the biggest servings but great quality which is what I care about. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Amazing Indian food! Although their Biriyani is not authentic! Love their veg Manchurian and chicken tandoori! Awesome service!

Yelp
This review is for the Plymouth location One weekday afternoon I found myself doing some errands on Plymouth off of 494 and in a strip mall with Pizza Hut and such I opted to indulge my tastebuds for some Indian cuisine here at the clay oven I took my options home to the far north and was prepared to satisfy my watering mouth with some deliciousness from the sub continent Highly reccomend this if you are craving good quality Indian cuisine

Natalie L.

Yelp
This food was amazing I ordered coconut chicken curry and strawberry juice it was so good the it was the best Indian food i had the whole time. The strawberry juice is not a cheap artificial drink it is real straight up juice from the strawberries. The staff was so polite my grandpa dropped a fork on the floor and he was immediately given a whole new set of silverware they were all very kind. The place was super clean and pretty.

Yelp
Stuck in HCMC this past weekend l was brought received a takeout order from Clay Oven. We had the Palak Paneer and Chicken Tikka plus the appetizer platter. Everything pretty good. I was surprised to find that my favorite item was a a samosa with lamb. I normally am not a big fan of lamb. While the food was not good enough to make it onto my rotation of frequent Indian food spots it was pretty tasty

Yelp
My daughter and I were at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and were looking for a restaurant for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised to find Clay Oven within a short walk from the MCBA. We had a nice booth near the windows facing Washington Avenue which provided a good amount of light. I had the Vegetable Samosa which was deliciously prepared. It was well-seasoned and flavorful. My daughter had the Chicken Curry which she enjoyed. We shared the Garlic Naan Bread. We both thought the bread was okay, but nothing spectacular. We've had better Naan Bread at other Indian restaurants. We will definitely go back to Clay Oven...perhaps to have the same item or try a sampling of other items on the menu.

Yelp
Clay oven is a great place for a warm and comforting Indian dish. Their naan with garlic was lovely and seasoned well. I love their chicken makhani sooo much! The tomato sauce is creamy and flavorful and leaves you wanting more when you're done. Our server was friendly and funny.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
The food and service was amazing! Easily a favorite! If you don't eat here you are definitely missing out!
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Restaurant was clean and simple. Our waiter was attentive and informative. Overall great experience! The vindaloo was our favorite, I got beef, sister got shrimp. Garlic naan was perfect. Lamb samosas were amazing. Mysore dosa was about a foot and a half long! Taste was 6/10. Mango lassi had great flavor; I just wish it was colder!
google avatar

Kelsey D.

Yelp
I love trying a new Indian restaurant! I went to Clay Oven after walking around the Mill City Farmers Market one weekend and it was a great find. It took us longer than I thought it would to get our food after we ordered (around 30 minutes) and it didn't seem to be super busy. The servers were great checking on us and filling up our drinks and apologized for the delay in our food when it arrived. We got a chicken tikka masala and aloo gobi. I really liked both of these dishes and would get them again! The interior of the restaurant is nice and reasonably priced for what you get with the chicken being about 16 dollars and the aloo gobi 14.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
I normally don't stray from our favorite Indian joints around town but when we saw that Clay Oven hard opened my partner and I decided to give it a shot and it did not disappoint! With a large menu, we were almost overwhelmed with choice (and we tend to feel very comfortable ordering Indian). We ended up going with some of our usual orders to see how they fared. We started with the lamb samosas which were extremely large but cooked to perfection. The dough on them flaked lightly and provided a nice crunch compared to the softness of the ground lamb, which I wish had a little more flavor. For our mains we ordered the chicken saag and chana masala and the portions were easily large enough for us to have leftovers. I ordered a 3/7 heat level for the chana masala and wish it had been a little spicier but the 5/7 on the saag was a little spicer but not as hot as expected. Next time we will just order higher numbers. The garlic naan was soft, garlic and perfectly warmed. We are so excited to go back and explore the street food on India section to try some dishes that are new to us! I also appreciated that the entire menu was marked with which items were GF/DF/V/VG.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
I dropped in for lunch and ordered the sag paneer and garlic naan bread. Both were absolutely delicious. Sag paneer had a heat bite to it, unlike many others I've had. A little hot, 10/10 for me. The garlic naan had the right amount of garlic, and together with the sag paneer, placed it in top tier of this dish I've eaten all over the world. The servers were very attentive and fun, and the music was lively. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Abbey W.

Yelp
Awesome and delicious Indian food! Their menu has so many different options, including gluten free and vegetarian options! We've had a variety of entrees when I've visited and I I wish I could remember what all we've had. I do know the samosa's are a must order! I get them every time and have yet to be disappointed! If you don't like to share, get a few orders because it only comes with 2 per order! The service is quick and the servers are attentive to you without being overwhelming. They're also great answering and questions for first timers! The space itself can feel somewhat cramped if it's busy, but they've been able to accommodate larger groups for us too! Overall this is a clean, fun, and friendly place for the Indian food lovers! Definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Super great! Their chicken and vegetable curry was a delight, the veggies had a little char which just supercharged the flavor. Maybe the new go to place!
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
We had delivery in a bad storm and even so the food came warm and tasted good! The chicken was a bit dry but we liked the flavor of the makhani and coconut dishes. It was fun getting the appetizer platter for a great variety to share amongst a few people. The garlic naan and the bathura breads were both very good for dipping. We did mild which was not too spicy. The mango lassi was very fruity and fresh.
google avatar

Hallie O.

Yelp
I have been here a few times and each time have been impressed. I don't live too far away. Therefore, I have only done takeout. Ordering online was easy and food is always amazing. Service is good. Parking is all metered street parking, and you may not want to go here when an event is going on at the US Bank Stadium, because parking can become really expensive and difficult to find.
google avatar

Lexi L.

Yelp
At this dinner I learned what "Minnesota spicy" means.. Spoiler alert, it's not very spicy! If you've had a lot of Indian food, you might be familiar with the painful sensation of ordering a "mild" curry and still losing all feeling in your tongue. At Clay Oven, they let you choose your spice level 1-7, but on a Minnesota spice scale. Aka- if you're a fan of spice I'd recommend a 6 or 7. This place was warm and the perfect noise level to catch up with friends without feeling like everyone can hear you. The curries were flavorful and tasty, just nothing mind blowing. Definitely satisfied my Indian food craving, and was a much welcomed warm dish. I didn't personally try the Dahi Puri (Semolina shells stuffed with potato & spices topped with yogurt, tamarind & mint chutneys), but it caught my friends by surprise with the texture and temperature (it's served cold). If you're unfamiliar with the dish, it could be a bit jarring, but if you've had it before it seems like a must get dish here!

Yelp
What a blessing to find a corner of India here in Minneapolis. I ordered lamb curry with a side of naan. All the food here is prepared fresh, and I found it well worth the wait. This was my first time here, so I was cautious with my preferred spice level. Their spice range is appropriately set. If you request 4 or lower, it will be mild. The texture of the curry was a nice even velvet, with a uniform dark maroon glow. It smothers a firm - but not chewy - lamb. The naan here was excellent. I always enjoy the blend of sensations when I eat naan. It's like biting into a seasoned cloud with a crisp finish that leaves buttery a warmth on my tongue. The basmati rice does its job, offering a soft sponge for the flavor of the curry. I was mesmerized by the breadth of the menu options. This is a place to enjoy a meal with others! Come to Clay Oven with friends. The meal portions and the variety of flavors demand sampling.

Abha G.

Yelp
Great place with wonderful service. Charles, the server makes you feel very welcome. Always smiling and giving his best

Yelp
Looking for a fancy Indian restaurant in downtown Minneapolis? Look no further. This place is bomb. So many delicious items on the menu. Tried the Gol Gappe (Indian street food), Chicken Josh, and Lamb Seekh Kebab with naan. Everything was tasty. Service was fast, these guys know what they're doing.
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
Fresh, tasty and on time. Ordered out and had the saag panned, lamb vindaloo (to die for) and veggie samosas! Will be back next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Trevor T.

Yelp
Food was very good tasting and not very spicy with 6 out of 7 spice level. Nice place

Artsyknitter O.

Yelp
The food is wonderful here it is filled with flavor, spice temp. of your choice. I love the veggie option and meat options.

Yelp
I am lucky to live so close to this restaurant. I have been looking for an Indian restaurant when this place opened. They were exactly exactly what I needed. I have a family member who comes to visit from Milwaukee and she says that she has never had Indian food better than this place so we are very happy customers.
google avatar

Veth L.

Yelp
Charming little place with delicious food. The chicken tikka was flavorful and delicious. Definitely will be going back again!

Silvana A.

Yelp
Food and service always great. It's super clean and decor is fresh as opposed to other places that feel tired. For me, the best Indian in Minneapolis and I've tried them all.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
We looked at all the great reviews and decided to try this place. We eat indian food a lot. This is an embarrassment of an establishment. We got $50 worth of takeout for neither dinner to be more than five bites. The butter chicken came with nothing but coated chicken, absolutely no curry/stew. There was no reason to give rice or naan, there was no stew with the chicken makhani. We will never come back here and frankly I'd appreciate my money back. We ordered a $21 lamb rogan josh entry for it to come in the smallest cup we've ever seen. It's overpriced and 1/4 of food as any other Indian restaurant. Deeply upset over the wasted money. Don't waste your time.
google avatar

K G.

Yelp
Hidden gem a quick skip from the stadium. Very kind, polite, and patient staff. All dishes were served fresh, hot, and delivered at the perfect spice level. (Level 3 for beginners is best for manageable spicy ness). Wish we saved room for dessert...next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent cuisine! I was wondering if I would find a good Indian restaurant and was about to give up but then I came here and, Wow! The Chili Paneer is great and the Salmon in coconut curry is fantastic and very fresh! Mist highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Very excited for clay oven to open! Did not disappoint. Everything was super delicious and flavorful. Mango lassi was sweet and a little salty, a nice combo. Overall awesome experience and will definitely return!

Paige M.

Yelp
Solid indian food, good service. Definitely get their mango lassi it's so good. Would definitely go back but maybe for takeout.

Prudence P.

Yelp
Awesome experience! Food is excellent. Took my friends who are from India. They rated the food #1. We had appetizers and a variety of main dishes: both meatless and with meat (goat).
