14 Most Anticipated Restaurants Across the Carolinas, Spring 2023 - Eater Carolinas

"From the team behind popular breakfast spot Dap’s, Cleats will be a restaurant featuring sports and sandwiches, which sounds commonplace, but co-owners Nick Dowling and Jeremiah Schenzel don’t do boring. They’re calling it a “sporty sammy public house.”" - Erin Perkins

Gluten free people of Charleston definitely need to check this place out! Dedicated gluten free fryers, fried chicken 👀👀👀. We had a great meal. We got the chopped Italian salad and chicken sandwich on fries. I don’t love the ordering system, but a staff member came and helped us order via their app. Very knowledgeable about their gluten free items, or very willing to double check with the kitchen. Will visit again when I’m in town. Fun place and great atmosphere.

The food could be better. I was expecting the garlic fries to be different than they came out, but it is literally how it reads.. it is minced garlic & herbs with stems thrown on-top of waffle fries. I expected it to be blended/seasoned together a bit more.. The garlic sauce was runny. The fried chicken sandwich is a fried chicken thigh. This was tough, chewy, & fatty. I thought this was an odd choice as most chicken sandwiches are made with chicken breast. The person who took our order was friendly. The place itself has a nice vibe with a good location at Refinery, but the food needs work.

My friend and I were in town for a convention and drove down from Charlotte. We're both in the industry and are chefs so sometimes it's hard to go out to eat and enjoy a meal. We wanted to stay close to our hotel in North Charleston and was recommended Cleats for a low key dinner and drinks. We ended up giving it a chance and we're not disappointed AT ALL! There was a concert going on in the backyard so we couldn't go outside which is fine. You sit at your table and order on your phone and they bring everything to your table. We ordered the artichoke dip, the garlic waffle fries which were insanely good. As well as the italian-ish and the BLT which also both killed. We also both got specialty cocktails which were DELICIOUS considering it's a low key spot. Would HIGHLY recommend this place, it's new and I love supporting small businesses. Service was great and if we're in town for another convention we will definitely be back!

Hatch Green chili wings were spectacular. Cheese dipping sauce made it an interesting twist. Jeremiah hit a home run! The “Breakfast of Champions” drink was next level. Christine made great conversation at the bar and really made the experience! Tons of beer on Tap as well.

I am such a big fan of Daps in Charleston that when I heard of Cleats opening I could not wait to drive from Atlanta to check it out. I can not over state how incredible the food and atmosphere is! The service was incredibly friendly and welcoming as well as prompt and efficient. Haven’t had an item from the menu that I haven’t absolutely loved. So much thought and care was put into this establishment and it shows. Try the Italian’ish or the Pulled Chicken Salad (shown in pic)! Great freaking spot.

The bean dip was possibly the worst thing I’ve ever tasted in my life. It was a complete oil bath. Even the bread was burnt and tasted terrible. Definitely avoid ordering this!!

Google
First time at Cleats. You order your food through an app and they bring it to you. We really enjoyed the burgers. None of that smash burger crap, these are nice thick, juicy burgers. Will definitely be back for happy hour.

Yelp
Beautiful little restaurant /Bar with friendly service. This gem of a place offers indoor and outdoor seating. Pet friendly in outdoor seating area. The fish sandwich and garlic waffle fries were delicious. Wonder flavor fresh ingredients. Cozy little place. They do have a draft and bottled beer as well as some signature cocktails. They also have some Wine on Draft (which 8 have never seen before) I would recommend for you to give this little gem a try.

Yelp
Solid sports bar kinda hidden away from hustle and bustle of Charleston King street or the BBQ district--but still within the brewery district. I was surprised with the wings, very good. I went with ranch dip and let my friend take the cheese dip for their fries. Cheese dip for wings must be a style I'm not familiar with, haha! The service was pretty organized and quick, even though it seemed busier than usual with college sports playing. This place has a lot of potential, being next to the music venue and having easy parking options. I recommend for watching your team play here with many different TVs, Go Sports! Cheers!

Yelp
The food was old and not fresh I ordered the pit beef on French fries. I saw this in the restaurant on a tray and looked really good. What I received when I ordered was not the same. The beef was paper thin and cold, same with the fries. They did a switch on me . The charge you an extra 3.00 for it being on a bed of fries. Everything was cold and the meat was cold and old, the meat looked and tasted like it was several hours sitting in a metal tin. Not Fresh what so ever. Be careful with this establishment, they are not to be trusted . I retuned the food and told them it was cold and old and not freshly made . They retuned me money ! Total let down and killed my time at the Whale. I would not order anything there and very suspicious about who and how they manage the kitchen. I would be suspicious of what you order , the do a switch food situation.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere!! Tucked away over by the Refinery venue, this place is bright, and full of energy! They have a full bar with fun twist on drinks as well as drinks on tap, including daiquiris, Moscow mules, and ranch water! They also offer food. We had the garlic waffle fries that were fantastic. This is one of those places you walk and know it was a great find! We will definitely be back next time we are in Charleston!!

Yelp
Went in twice for wine events during the Euros and had some beverages and food. Good start for this place! I will go back. The staff was friendly, they have enough space and plenty of TVs to make it a sports bar worth going to. Hopefully, they add more TVs outside or at least speakers.

Yelp
Had some great food and drinks here! It's a big open place with an industrial meets sporty vibe. My partner and I were some of the only patrons there on a Monday at 5:30 so everything was very quick. I had the Nothing But Fernet cocktail which is an excellent mix of fernet and Thai tea! I've been wanting to see fernet if more cocktail menus and this was so good! My partner got a local edmunds oast beer and we split the 1lb wings (came with 6 large wings) and the Italian-ish sandwich. I'm always impressed with unique wings. Spicy flavor but not saucy, but also not dry rubber. Idk how they do it but it was great and served with cheese dip?! Why have I never seen this before! The sandwich was good but I wish the bread was grilled since there was a lot of olive oil on it. We didn't even ask to split it and they put it on two plates for us! My partner didn't think there were enough TVs to be deemed a 'sports bar', but I liked it cus there weren't 100 flashing screens in your face. Can't wait to try more of their cocktails and a dawg next time!

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at Cleats! I tried Alex's Turkey Ricotta sandwich, and it was incredible--full of flavor and perfectly balanced. What made the visit even better was the warm and friendly service from Grace and Melissa. They made me feel right at home, and their attentiveness really stood out. I'll definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
We were super excited to try Cleats! The chicken wings were the highlight of our meal. We would get those again for sure. We both got a pit beef sandwich which was good, but I would try something different next time. We were the only customers there when we came by, so things could have been a little off because of that. Overall I would definitely try it again.

Yelp
Stopped in to watch the US Women's soccer team win their gold medal match. The place was rocking! Great venue for watching sports. Food and drinks were good. Service was awesome!!!

Yelp
One star for venue and one star for service. BUT the food was terrible. Garlic fries, egg and eggplant slider and lettuce wraps. Not trying to be mean but I don't think my dog would have eaten it. Honestly bad! Good luck, won't be back.
