I finally made it to Cliff House for the first time as an adult. I cherish those memories.
Before we even climbed up (by "climbed", I mean today we took the Gondola. Baller!), the woman in the ticket booth at the bottom said there was a 45-minute wait. We kind of expected that, but imagine the WTFs floating through my head when we entered the restaurant and saw a room full of unoccupied seats.
Sure, the deck was full. It was a nice day. But why they don't staff well enough on a Sunday to handle a few extra parties? So we waited at the bar. Bloody Mary was on point (so almost-wife told me), as was the Jack & Ginger that I ordered.
They kindly seated us at the corner at a high table. Confusingly, there is also a taco stand outside. How they figure into the experience is confusing. Did I mention that I was confused
The views and décor are the only reasons to go here. But they are amazing. And we found the staff to be very friendly, though evidently quite focused on closing up shop since we got in the door at 1:30 (they close at 3). The food is nothing to rave about. We ordered the fried Brussels Sprouts as an app based on a recommendation from a friendly (nosy?) bar patron. Burned to a brown crisp. Gross. My burger was satisfyingly prepared, but why is everything on white bread? Is this Vermont or Canada? Am I at a neighborhood dive? Does brown bread not travel well up a mountain? These questions plagued my visit.
Finally, I did learn that in Vermont, you can buy a bottle of wine, champagne, or other resealable container with no intention to finish it and are allowed to take it home. Our server informed us of this. It's great.
ANYWAY, go to the Cliff House for the views, have a beer and something tough to mess up. Next time I'm going to go in the middle of a hike.
