On the Grid : Clique Lanes

"With winters like ours, it sometimes feels good to hurl balls at bunches of little flimsy pins. With two levels, 16 lanes and one heck of a full-service bar, it’s easy to see why West Siders have been relieving some stress at the Clique for decades." - Visualhero

Google
First time coming here. I have to say overall, these lanes are very retro feeling, I love how there are two stories, both have a different vibe. The customer service is great (they fixed some issues we had with our lane very quickly) and the price is very affordable. Appetizers were quite small (we paid 12.50$ for those two) and the lanes are a little heavily greased for me. Otherwise, great alley!

Google
A true bowler's Mecca!! Classic old school house! The staff are second to only the management!!! The lanes here are amazing and immaculately maintained! Open to all from the fan to the beginner with amazing private event facilities!!!

The ball return hand dryers need cleaned or replaced, almost useless at their current air volume output. Otherwise awesome retro vintage place worth checking out. I love the bowling theme carpet & outlet in the back to charge my phone. Love the vintage decor and well functioning equipment. Steps are a little weird and inconvenient right down to the lane approach start. Nice staff, reasonable price($3/game if you have your own ball and shoes) & really nice availability in the afternoon on a Wednesday I'll be back! Looks like a game watching projector is there and a few dart boards also.

Google
Thank you for my kiddo’s first bowling experience. The staff was incredibly kind and warm and made for a very special birthday for me. Beautiful facility. Perfect vibe. Exactly what an alley should be.

Google
Came here for a game of bowling with a large group of friends. The staff did a great job checking us in in a timely manner and getting us a lane quickly, food prices were reasonable and the staff delivered our food in a reasonable time. The two stories bowling alley made the place look small but it can hole a lot of people Had a lot of fun and will be back!

Google
Look, a little shop worn, true. But charm in keeping with the Atmos of the westside. Clean friendly and ample parking for mid-afternoon. Everything works. Everyone has a good time.

Google
We hadn’t been here before but had a ton of fun bowling! The beers were realistically priced and the lanes were managed well. It was a fun environment with retro vibes that appeared to be kept up well!

Yelp
The owners have really elevated this property. I hadn't been there in years. They have an extensive menu of pretty much bar food. The cod fillets and chicken fingers were definitely from a frozen package but tasty. Their selection of beer is great and drinks are good. The server upstairs is great! Very friendly and helpful. We hope to take family there over Christmas break!

Yelp
I got punched in the face by two drunk maniacs. Keep an eye out for them. They resembled Marv and Harry, from Home Alone and Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York. The Harry character also looked like Mike Moffitt from Seinfeld. I held the door open for them when I got back into the alley after putting my jacket in the car. Harry came from across the street, possibly from Turnstiles. Whereas Marv came in through the parking lot, perhaps from under the overpass or woods. The punch, from Harry/Mike Moffitt, was due to the fact that we wouldn't let them bowl with us. They were trashed when they walked in the place, and the bartenders still decided to serve them. When I told the bartenders that these guys were bad news, no one did anything until I got sucker punched. I guess there was also a shooting in the parking lot in December last year. Oh and your car will likely bottom out when you pull out of the lot. You're better off playing Wii bowling at home.

Yelp
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!!!!!!! People working at the desk were awful. I believe his name is Dan (about 5'11" bald guy) that worked there was unwilling to help whatsoever. My lane was glitching and said my game was over when I had only bowled 3 frames. He was unwilling to start the game over or give me a free game when games were only $3 each. He was extremely rude and used terrible language with me. I wouldn't recommend going back to this place even if someone paid me to.

Yelp
Bartender on the second floor was so sweet and personable! We had a lane on the 2nd floor and it was not overpriced! We are from out of town and this place was better than the chain bowling alleys you usually go to.

Yelp
LOVE this bowling alley. It has 2 floors with a full bar on each, and a kitchen for your basic bar food as well. Their food is cheap at about $4-6 for most items and you'll get a large portion that tastes great, I'd recommend the grilled cheese or chicken tenders. It's definitely a little bit older of a place and a little bit crowded up at the lanes, but the price is right with games and shoes clocking in at about $3 each. They also have several nice dart boards that you can play on while you wait for a lane. The bartenders and the guys who ring you up are always extremely friendly and go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome. When their lanes have been filled up by leagues they've even called another bowling alley for me to see if there was room there. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Love this bowling alley! Great bar on each floor of the bowling alley. Nice and nostalgic. Love this place!!! They have touch tunes which is great because I can pick songs to bowl to. They have a large selection of balls of all weights. They keep the alleys and tables clean and well lit. The bartenders make good drinks and the drinks are affordable. My only complaint is that they keep your credit card when starting a tab. I greatly prefer to get the card back immediately.

Yelp
Solid bowling alley with less than a half dozen lanes and an infinite amount of fun. This no frills bowling alley has everything you need --- - cheap games (1.50 a game... you can't beat that) - free parking - more balls than you could imagine (that's what she said) - cheap drinks - a juke box there are disco lights--- but before sunset this place has got the bright lights ON. played three games and was on my merry way. I dig it.

Yelp
I called on a Thursday to see if they offered open bowl on Friday nights- to my surprise they did and they had open lanes. The guy who answered suggested that I reserve lanes to make sure they were available when we got there. Glad he suggested that! Our two lanes were ready for us when we walked in the door. Super impressed with the old school retro vibe. Smaller bowling alley-which is nice! Not too small but not ginormous, either. Love that they have a juke box, too! Lanes, balls, tables, screens, bar, etc.. all in good shape. Younger bartenders who were super nice! Beers normal priced. Also, cant beat the $12 deal for 3 games and shoes! Def. look forward to going back!

Yelp
This spot is awesome! The overall vibe of the place is great! Laid back, good service, and cold beer. The alleys themselves worked great. No weird hiccups, just a good time. Highly recommend.

Yelp
What more can you really ask for? The clique is a perfect mix of "bowling alley feel" with a bit of local personality. The bowling is good, the place doesn't smell, the service is friendly and the drinks are cheap. Coming here is a chill night out. Of note on many Nights you can rent out the upstairs for private parties. The staff is very flexible and will let you special order bottles you want, and will let you bring in outside catering as well as the bowling alley food.

Yelp
The lanes were bad it messed up a lot we had to keep moving lanes would not go here again we had not had problems other times but today we had a lot and that's why I am giving it a one star
google avatar

Yelp
The Clique is super awesome. They even have parking you don't have to do an 8-point turn to get into or out of (*cough Wengers cough*). The other classic old bowling joint. Drinks aren't as cheap and hours aren't as flexible, but their bar is better and it's always less crowded with drunk idiots. After bowling here, head across the street to Stockbridge.

Yelp
Such a cool place. Up stairs bowling area is awesome! cheap drinks cheap bowling and a totally mid west vibe! Check this place out its like going back in time. And fun for the whole fam! Just wish I had a better score.... Ill be back!

Yelp
In my bowling and BBQ tour of the eastern third of the US, this place was a great find. The awesome sign out front called me in. The 75 Cent games and $2 bud cans kept me there for a while. The lanes are in good shape, and had perfect oil in the middle of the day on a Wednesday. Cool scene, and not that manufactured Lucky Strike kind of vibe. Come on out to Clique and throw some rocks!!!

Yelp
I have always been intrigued by The Clique, it's neon sign has called to me as i pass by on the highway for many years...and i am ashamed to say that i had lived in Grand Rapids for almost six years before i visit this local gem. The 5th annual Fool's New Years Eve party was held there and it wasn't only the wonderful costumes and great local music that made it lovely...the double decker bowling alley and pitchers of highlife most certainly put it over the edge. The staff not kicking my friends and me out for our ridiculous antics was also pretty grand. The bar tenders were pretty on top of there game and I know my friend was loving the extra whiskey in her double jack and cokes... This is a golden spot tucked into one of the more grimy, out of the way spots in GR and it is most definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
Awesome place! No crowds on a rainy day after thanksgiving! WHAT??!! Super easy to come with tons of children. They put up bumpers, have bowling ramps and light balls. They also have very clean like-new shoes and it is CHEAP. About $3 for ball and game. We also ordered some fries, fried pickles and onion rings. The guy at the bar was energetic, super enthusiastic about the place and brought the food upstairs to us on the second floor. YES THE BOWLING ALLEY HAS TWO FLOORS. So cool. Way to take an old place and make it feel so clean without losing the 1950's vibe!

Yelp
Happy Fool's New Years to you... After attending the 5th annual Fool's New Years, I was not disappointed. The drinks were strong and although the bar seats were constantly occupied, getting a drink was rather painless. After Son and Heir and the Narwhale played, we went up stairs to bowl.. and the best part was I didn't have to drab down my sassy outfit with bowling shoes. I was "allowed" to bowl in my heels (shhh don't tell, and note: by "allowed" I mean I "allowed" myself.. but no one said anything). sexy music, sassy girls and boys, and bowling. What more could a girl want in life?

Yelp
We went to the Clique for a group bowling event with small kids, and if they would have had our lanes ready (we ended up waiting 45 minutes), I would have given them 5 stars! We had a blast and we will be back!

Yelp
Another Westown Favorite! Im not all that big of a bowler but this takes me back to my childhood! two floors of bowling and a great bar with the BEST French-fries in town!!!! Great staff! very accommodating

Yelp
Come here with a group of friends after 9pm during the week to take advantage of the $6 deal for 3 games and shoes rental. There's almost always have enough lanes for all of us and the staff is super friendly too. Rarely have any issues with the equipment and even then it gets resolved quickly. They also got new screens and UIs!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I love to bowl! Every time he visits me we go bowling here because of the awesome retro feel. They have tabs! Also the people behind the counter are real nice and helpful. Must say the only problem I have is the upstairs. The lanes, tables and computers are exactly the same, but there's no staff upstairs so it just felt a little weird to me. Can't wait to go back again. :)

Yelp
I love Clique! It's right around the corner from my house, and they have awesome bowling specials for late night bowling. The staff are friendly and helpful, especially if you need some help stepping up your game. There's also a full service bar and sometimes live music for an even more enjoyable evening out.

Yelp
Wonderful staff ,fun atmosphere, very helpful. We had a bowling party with 20 people. The food was good. The staff was friendly and smiling all the time. They were helpful and everything was clean. Everyone had a good time.

Yelp
Ass kickery!!! I love bowling and I love dive bars... This place is great!!! It's got two floors and each floor has an island bar. The prices are cheap and they have High Life on tap... The service is good and it's just got tons of character and grit to it... Plenty of parking on the side and once you are done throwing lanes you can walk across the street to Joe V's and continue drinking and grab a slice. Overall a great time.

Yelp
By far the best bowling alley in Grand Rapids area! I have been there now twice, once with another couple in the late evening and another time with my wife and 4 kids on a Sunday afternoon. Great combination of reasonable price and high quality. Bar food was above average but certainly not amazing. Full bar was more than adequate. Will be back!

Michael S.

Yelp
I used to love coming here, but recently the employees have become more and more toxic. Last night I saw employees being rude to customers, and consistently eye-rolling when being asked for service. Their $6 deal used to be the highlight of my weeknights, but now I cringe being there since every patron seems to be putting such a "burden" on the staff by asking for help with anything. Don't plan on coming back until I've heard that new staff is around.

Yelp
Clique is the best place to go for bowling and drinks, especially if you have a group! Dennis was absolutely amazing helping me set up my event, date and time for almost 50 people! He is definitely the go-to guy when you need anything there! He was serving people and making sure we had everything we needed! Thank you Dennis for your hospitality. The whole group had a great time and they will be talking about this experiences for a long time! - Haleigh W.

Yelp
This place deserves all 5 stars. Me and my buddies stumbled across this hole in the wall on a random Wednesday about a year ago and we have gone back pretty much every Wednesday since. Incredibly cheap pitchers of beer and 3 games of bowling including shoes for around $10. What more can you ask for when it comes to going out on a Wednesday to break the work week up!
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I've gone here I've had a blast. Cheap drinks, great bar food, and they usually have lanes open even on Fridays or Saturdays. Almost everyone that works there is friendly. You don't always get the overly smiley customer service that's so prevalent now but you get your food pretty quick and they have no problem fixing mistakes when they happen. Most importantly it's just a fun place to visit!

Yelp
The Clique is a jewel of a bowling house located in GR's Westside. My son & I during our middle-of-the-week days off make the drive to The Clique to bowl (37 miles-one way!). Game prices are very reasonable as are those for food & the full bar. Eight lanes on the main floor and eight lanes upstairs. The lane surfaces are well maintained. Their computer scoring even provides radar-ball speed readouts for each shot. The Clique has a retro-vintage vibe to it. Dennis and the day-crew know how to make patrons feel welcome. Our first visit to The Clique, last spring, we walked thru the doors to find a full house of middle-schoolers doing their annual school bowling outing. Dennis told us to come back in an hour and he would have an open lane for us. When we returned, he sent us upstairs to bowl while the 1st floor stayed full of kids. We had the entire upstairs lanes to ourselves for nearly the entire time we were there. The Clique is a really cool bowling house to spend a hot summer afternoon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Dlawless1025 ..

Yelp
Best bowling prices I've come across. $6 for 3 games AND shoes on weeknights after 9:00 pm. Tough to beat. It's a bit of an old-school feel and overall a great atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out.

Jack B.

Yelp
I really love this place, but I am giving it a bad rating because I can never go there. It is literally booked all day everyday of the weekend. Every single weekend I call they tell me that they are booked until 11pm. How are they booked every day of the weekend till 11pm? That doesn't even make sense. I wish i could enjoy this place, but as of now it must be an exclusive vip club.
