The Best Dive Bars in Boston | Eater Boston

"The Clock has been a Southie classic since 1934, with reasonable drinks, a long bar of regulars, and a pool table. It’s a great spot to start a night out in Southie. They’ve recently done a little bit of a revamp to spruce up with place, adding sports memorabilia (who doesn’t love a classic photo of Larry Bird), classic album art, and some new lighting, but it remains a friendly spot for locals." - Nathan Tavares

If you find yourself walking to the more downtown area of Boston for expensive fancy places like "Bell in Hand" turn around and head to south Boston for a more Mass Hole experience. Fantastic place to grab a beer and hang out with the locals.

Google
As an amateur to ‘dive’ bars, was perfect as a Florida native for my last (specially Monday) night in Boston - bartenders Danny (?) and Capone were amazing; music was great, reasonably priced drinks and overall vibes were high,, will be back my next time in town

Google
Had a lovely night at the Clock—solid drinks, great people, and a shotski with hockey helmets (because safety first?). Also, no line at Friday at 11pm yet still filled with people (love). And the decor/atmosphere is just the vibe we were looking for. They do kick you out promptly before 1 AM, I know rules are rules but damn. What’s a bit more shocking is thatAn 18-year-old somehow made it into the bar. If you’re gonna sneak in, maybe don’t tell every girl you’re 18, lil bro. All in all, 10/10 vibes. Would definitely return.

I had two good drinks and played some pool. The bouncer grabbed my shoulder while I was at the bar and told me to leave. The guy next to me was drunk and he thought we were together. But he put his hands on me aggressively. If you’re a girl and want to be safe I wouldn’t recommend this bar.

Google
This place is so swag. The worst problem they have is that it can get toooo busy. Thats the problem u want. Decor is top notch. Staff kills it. Using Proper Twelve cocktails are so good. Must stop in boston

Google
The owner will reserve half the bar to take his weird alternative 14 year old friends in there. Got one drink and left as soon as possible I hope to never enter this weird establishment again. Bouncers are hot tho.

Google
Very clean and organized. Cash only though but there’s an ATM in the back. Pool table and darts in the back also. Seating is nice around the bar. There are high top tables and seats. Couch in the back by the pool table. Prices are reasonable. Definitely cheaper and drinks are a large amount for much cheaper than restaurants and regular bars. Definitely recommend this bar.

Google
Proper locals bar with a welcoming vibe for tourists. It’s cash only which is good to know in advance. Only downside was my pint of Coors was completely off - think the keg needed to be changed as it tasted vile but resolved that with a bottled beer quickly after.

Yelp
No food is served at this location. They had a decent selection of beers. This is definitely a college dive bar or maybe mid 20s. Certainly not for me in my taste, but I can see where it is. An extremely popular location. Great for a group of friends to have drinks. You certainly can't break anything.

Yelp
Neighborhood joint, clean, bright & friendly, to play pool, & enjoy the company:) They are proud to be a part of the neighborhood & it shows !

Yelp
Working class old bar in Southie. Friendly bartender and clientele. I would definitely go again.

Yelp
Down and dirty, just like my first wife Ask to turn on the jukebox. Cash only and I will come back

Yelp
This place is called the Clock Tavern for a reason; there are LOTS of clocks on the walls! Anyway this is a cash only bar with a fair tap selection. I was here during January and noticed that an Octoberfest was still available, which indicates to me that it didn't move well. Worked fine for me though, I like those. Beer prices are about average for the area. There is a pool table available but I just took advantage of hanging out with my friends in a bar where we could actually hear each other. That's about it. Clock Tavern is your average bar and that is A-OK.

Yelp
Just gross inside. Food is mediocre. There's plenty of bars with better services on the same street

Yelp
Great bar in Southie! Friendly locals, decent pour and a great bartender. Well worth it.

Yelp
Great Southie "dive" bar, although not too divey. Very clean and modern inside but still authentic old time bar feel. Likely to get locals and groups of older men that lived in Southie before it was cool. Unlikely to get the Southie Bro crowd. IPAs on draft for $4.50, which is half of what they cost at any of the neighboring bars. Cash only.

Yelp
This bar is a pretty good find if you're looking for a place to grab a casual beer at. It is cash only but they have an ATM in the back with a $2.50 fee. I like this bar because although it's called a "dive", it's pretty well kept inside and the bar area is very stocked and looks very clean. They have keno, scratch tickets, pool, jukebox, darts and a few TVs to watch some Sports on. Beers are $3 for a draft of Budweiser and Sam Adams are like $4.50.

Yelp
Great place! The bouncer is super friendly and accommodating getting people a table. Fun atmosphere and good music!

Yelp
The Clock is awesome. You typically can get in and out of here in under 20 bucks with a solid buzz. It's for the people who look at Shennanigans next door and go "uhh... no thank you" It's for the people who want to sit at the bar, and have a drink. Maybe get a scratch ticket, and if your buddy came with you, maybe get a game of pool in. It's for the people who want to drink. Alcohol. It's that kind of place. Go and enjoy.

Yelp
It's where the locals go. Beer was cheap. Jukebox was pumping. Pool table taken. What you'd expect from a neighborhood bar, not worth a trip if you're not in the neighborhood but stop by if you are.

Yelp
If you like Whiteys you'll love the Clock...cleaner and safer and only slightly more expensive....dont go Friday afternoons as the place is full of construction types talking/bragging about work...boring But nice spot for quite drink..dive bar but very safe

Yelp
While it has gotten prettier in the last few months, The Clock still has the old tavern feeling where locals can mingle with the lads over a few pints and a game of pool. Prices for beer are pretty cheap and there is a good selection. The staff is friendly and glad to serve you. There is always a game of soccer, baseball or football (American or Gaelic) on the nice flat screen TVs. Its a great place to hang out after work and chat with friends.

Yelp
The Clock was recently revamped and looks all classy inside and stuff. I haven't been to the new incarnation, but the old one was a good time when we got tired of the Shennany's scene.

Yelp
More time here has required a needed bump in stars. The Clock Tavern is the perfect "economic hard times" bar. Drafts are $1.50, mixed drinks are $3.75, and a game of pool is $1 (on paycheck weeks, you can splurge for the $2 Big Buck Hunter. Hey there Big Spender!). I really can't justify NOT going out when a month's worth of getting bombed is cheaper than my cable bill. My liver may not thank you Clock, but my wallet certainly does.

Laura F.

Yelp
The best dive bar around. Only problem is that it's cash only. A pool table in the back, TouchTunes, a few TVs, and locals. Great place and cheap drinks!
google avatar

Ari H.

Yelp
For $1.50 drafts of light beer, Keno, and one of those Internet jukes, the Clock is a dive full of locals and post-college co-eds. I went here on a Saturday night around 11 and it was dead...but maybe because the place closed at 11:30. Whoever heard of a Boston bar closing at 11:30 when everything else closes at 2 a.m.?
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
You cant go wrong with a dark bar atmosphere with cheep draft and scratch ticket machines!! woo haaa

Gabrielle B.

Yelp
If you could give less than one star I would. Bar tender was one of the biggest bitches ever. So rude the second we walked in at 12am. She greeted us by saying "last call." Extremely rude. Then she goes "cash only." Awesome, thank you for your kindness and you're welcome for our money. She hurried us up to drink, shut off the music and shooed us out with a half a drink left each. Worst service ever. I will never return.

Adam H.

Yelp
This place is great. i can walk 1 block and get $1.50 drafts. They have darts, pool, big buck hunter and a decent internet juke box. This is the place where we at least start the night. The tv's are also decent.
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
Not the type of bar I would normally go to, but hanging with the locals and living it up with my friends was grand.

Yelp
This is a no nonsense boozer. People are very friendly here and, best of all, they let me take my dog in. Buy!

Ariana Z.

Yelp
I was meeting up with a large group of friends, initially at Shennanigan's next door. As we were trying to get in there, there was a fight breaking out on the door way. We decided it would be best to go to the clock tavern next door. What a great idea. Quiet enough to hear everyone talk, good music playing. Very reasonable pricing on drinks. Great place to go if you want to meet up with a bunch of friends and actually talk to them. Chill laid back environment.
