See the World the Old-Fashioned Way at These 7 Cameras Obscura

"The squat, round hut known as the Cloud Chamber for the Trees and Sky may look like an enchanted hobbit home, but it is in fact the work of British artist Chris Drury who built the structure as a rustic camera obscura. Located on the largest museum campus in the United States behind the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Cloud Chamber is a unique work that mixes fairy tale design with medieval technology to create one of the most unique spaces in the world. The low-lying hut is made of large, dry stone blocks in the shape of a rocky igloo with a lush, green turf sitting on top. There is a single wooden door leading into the chamber which becomes light-tight when the door is closed. The only illumination in the 14-foot diameter room comes from a small hole in the roof of the chamber which acts as a camera obscura, a medieval optics trick that ends up projecting a mirror image of the area on the lit side of the camera. Thus the interior of the cloud chamber has trees, clouds, and blue sky projected across the white cement walls. The Cloud Chamber ultimately allows visitors to virtually walk among the clouds and the treetops using a technology that requires nothing but sunshine.  Update as of April 2021: Temporarily closed for renovations.  Update as of May 2022: The location is now open." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We came to Raleigh for the State Fair this last Thursday, enjoyed it, but the prices there were too much for us. We left the Fair for the Art Museum to see this chamber. Lovely setting back in the woods. Squirrels skipping about. Trail from museum to get to it is pretty short. Don't recommend this for anyone with mobility issues as footing in a number of areas in the woods can be tricky. Once inside the chamber, allow a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness... visual effect in two of my photos. It's a real shame that juveniles have tried defacing this lovely piece. A nice officer chatted with us to discover our intentions and told us about it. Why in the world would anyone hurry its demise? It can't be replaced. Such behaviors speak of delinquency, carelessness and a complete disregard -- or lack of knowledge -- of the value-added of art such as this in our communities. Please allow this chamber to exist in peace.

A little known gem--enter the cloud chamber, close the door, and let your night vision acclimate for a few minutes. You'll see a beautiful projection of the clouds and surrounding trees on the walls/floor through the pinhole of light coming through the roof. Super cool experience!

This Cloud Chamber is so interesting to me! I came here for a field trip with my photography class and I was super intrigued by it. I definitely want to go back! you go inside and shut the door of the chamber and on a sunny day light will pass through a small hole in the ceiling and the trees outside will be painted on the walls.

Was a rainy foggy day but still beautiful here and very cool to be able to check this out.

The trail to this is closed. Looks like it’s been closed for a while. Just want people to know so they don’t go out there and waste their time like I did.

The Cloud Chamber for the Trees and Sky, a whimsical art installation that doubles as a camera obscura, is indeed a real place, but it seems there's been a mix-up with its accessibility. While it's true that the trails to the chamber are not a roundabout of free movement, the chamber itself is not always open for cloud-watching shenanigans. It's like the chamber is playing hard to get, only revealing its skyward projections during certain hours. So, if you're planning a visit, it might be wise to check the actual opening times and not rely on the chamber's flirtatious whispers of being a 24/7 celestial cinema.

It's detour from the trail and is hidden so be on the lookout. It's a great experience otherwise to see the reflections inside.

Loved this art hut!! Its great to go on a sunny day and shut the door once you're inside. There is a small opening in the roof and the light reflects beautiful patterns of tree branches and leaves all over the walls and floor.

Located in the museum park, off one of the trails and in a corner where you're probably not going to just stumble upon it is this extremely interesting artwork. It took me about 90 minutes of walking and wandering until I finally found it. Difficult because it's not on one of the paved trails and some of the woods trails are marked off. But I did eventually get there. The Cloud Chamber is a "camera obscura" that uses a pinhole in the roof to project a mirror image of the lit area onto the walls. After you step inside and close the door, once your eyes adjust, you'll see trees and clouds and blue sky projected across the white cement walls. It's very clever! Thank you to artist Chris Drury who installed this stone, wood and turf structure in 2003.
