South Bend’s Best Restaurants for a Great Meal | Eater Chicago

"The collective serves Cloud Walking’s high-end coffee and food, baked goods and sweets from local restaurateurs. Popular items include local chocolates, scrumptious bacon scones, bagel sandwiches, and breakfast burritos. There’s also a variety of whole wheat baked goods, such as shapley sourdough loaves and addictive sourdough soft pretzels. On the weekends, Cloud Walking Collective rotates between serving made-from-scratch tacos and pizza." - Drew Mentock

Amazingly varied menu of both coffee and alcoholic beverages, served to you by very friendly staff and made by skilled baristas who actually care. This is a pretty amazing place, serving a wide variety of people, families etc and maintaining a truly inclusive, community conscious vibe. Makes me wish I actually lived here so I could spend more time getting to experience all they have to offer - all around you on the walls are posters advertising local artists, community events, groups that meet up here, etc. great way to get in touch with what’s going on locally. Great vegan options too, menu items and alternative milks. Really appreciate the existence of this place and will try to come back any time I’m in the area.

Stopped by for lunch on Saturday. Cool artistic decor, friendly staff, delicious food and coffee. The chips truly were some of the best I’ve ever had, and my cold brew with macadamia nut milk was the best cold brew I’ve had in some time. Worth the effort to get there with the road construction.

Great spot to stop for some coffee in the SB area. The coffee is always excellent and they have a wide variety of unique drinks. They are located close to the farmers market making it a perfect addition to your Saturday morning local produce stop trip! Baristas seem knowledgeable and to enjoy their craft. Come check it out!

The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The enviornment was very interesting and made for a nice cafe. The latte art on the drink was beautiful, the workers really seemed to enjoy their job.

Google
I stopped in for a latte and cookie. I had the Vanilla Maple Matcha Latte. It was delicious! The staff were so kind while making an excellent drink. The cookie was so good. The place has a cool funky vibe. I'd highly recommend you stop by for your favorite drink!

Super-welcoming staff behind the counter. The iced latte was perfect. Double-shot. Not too harsh. Great back room to study. Sad that the ongoing construction is likely depressing business. Probably the best coffee in South Bend.

Google
It was our first time here, and everyone was super helpful and nice. I had the carrot cake and dirty chai. Everything had lots of flavor and delicious. We even bought a loaf of sourdough to take home. The weather was great, so they had the pack garage door open, which was nice to have fresh air coming in and seeing the nice weather. The atmosphere was inviting. We will definitely be back!

Google
Cloud Walking Coffee Shop is such a gem! I got the Flora Latte iced with oat milk — basically a flower garden in a cup. Lavender, rose, jasmine, elderflower, orange blossom water, honey, butterfly pea powder… topped with an edible flower and totally worth it. Had to try one birthday cake macaron — key word one, but honestly I could’ve walked out with a dozen. And because I can’t resist a menu wild card, I ordered the Basically a Suburb of Chicago Dog (their gourmet take on a Chicago dog), and it did not disappoint. Cozy vibes, unique flavors, and a super creative menu. Already planning to come back and eat my way through every macaron flavor.

Yelp
This place is the BEST. You walk into a very warm and inviting place. It's cozy. The coffee is great Food (have not tried) looks so good. Everything is made in house. The staff is friendly and so willing to help you make your decision. This is a hidden gem.

Yelp
Cloud Walking Cafe is the loveliest shop with something around every corner- literally. There's plenty of seating- in fact there's an entire back room with couches and communal tables for working on your laptop or collaborating with others. They also sell several goods from local artisans - earrings, mugs, tshirts, dream catchers, artwork, etc. it's a bit of a mishmash. Their coffee drinks are delicious. They only have ONE SIZE offering though! What the heck?! I ordered their lavender orange blossom latte and it came in the smallest cup! I wanted 5 of them! This is my biggest (and only) complaint! I want more sizes of their delicious coffee! Their pastries and tarts are beyond incredible (see photos). There's plenty of street parking outside so hurry on over to this coffee shop:)

Yelp
I have visited this coffee shop twice now and I can't say I am super impressed. There are not many options in the area anymore that are open in the evening so we went here again to try it. The coffee is okay as well as the baked goods. The vibe/ambiance felt off too. It is always packed too so finding a spot can be difficult. I did notice the staff were very kind and helpful when someone did not like their drink. They recommended a new drink and made it for the customer free of cost.

Yelp
When I am visiting my hometown I always come here (if not every day I'm in town). I absolutely love the vibes, staff and more importantly the coffee. I really love that this places celebrates local businesses. The space is pretty large so I haven't had any issues finding a spot to relax in.

Yelp
Always fun to check out a new coffee shop went on the road. I was excited to see this option surface as we were making our drive back to Indianapolis better yet, that it's located just across the street from one of our other favorite South Bend stops -an Italian sandwich shop. This coffee shop is unique in the sense that under one roof they house, a Roastery, homemade chocolate bar, business, sourdough bread, bakery in variety of items made by local artisans. Always fun to see a hub of creativity, housing so many delicious treats in one spot. We opted for a traditional mocha, and a Mayen mocha based on what we read in the reviews. They use the in-house chocolate in both of these drinks. They are very subtle and mild mochas. Don't expect a super sweet drink. The spotless, bustling, and the back of the business features a lot of space for studying and coworking. I appreciate that they have windows with visibility into the coffee roasting process. Overall, a positive experience. My only regret is not getting to try one of the homemade marshmallows that I saw topping some of the mocha drinks. The service was straightforward. I wouldn't call it the most friendly and warm of coffee shops but not necessarily unfriendly either.

Yelp
I had a mocha from here and it was one of the best coffees I've ever had. The foam was really thick and good. I had this pizza bread that was also delicious. They have fresh herbs from their garden. The cashier didn't know what was on the bread which was odd but it wasn't too hard to figure out. The macaroons were super good especially the lavender one! The bathroom was clean and the place has such cute decor. I also bought some chocolate but yet to try it. The service was friendly and quick.

Yelp
The coffee was fantastic. They offered anything from regular drip, to pour over, to coffee cocktails. There is also offer food and plenty of sweet treats and bread. The staff was friendly and helpful with coffee decisions. I'm glad we found this little gem!

Kangni X.

Yelp
Great coffee. Roasted in house. Regular milk and oat milk offered. No extra charge for oatmilk! Ordered a Stardust pour over and a savory scone. Both were delicious. Only downfall is that there aren't a lot of bigger meal/food options to sustain yourself if you're studying all day. I love the space for other small businesses to display and sell their products, especially all the plants!!

Yelp
Cloud Walking has figured out their flow and it's great. They have fun seasonal beverages, but I still love their mocha. There's a little bit of seating in the front, but there's a bigger area to hang out or work in the back with tables, couches, and comfy chairs. I love treating myself to a macaron from Love & Macs or a baked good (or bread) from Elder Bread. The Violet Sky chocolate is available for purchase, along with other goods like ceramics, jewelry, jam, and coffee, of course. The baristas and staff are all great. This is arguably the best coffee shop in South Bend. Don't miss it if you're in the area.

Yelp
I walk inside and the barista looks up and says, "Hey!" with a smile. P.S. The staff is incredible. They're so nice. & they remember me, which is the biggest plus ever; it's such a compliment. I always order a mac, or two, or three. Can't go without my drugs. & the drinks are marvelous. Imo, the coffee is Quality. (& i gotta say, go for the victuals too. I love the Lox toast.) I always take time to look at the floor. And the plants, and the lights, and the paintings on the walls. They've got a painting there that I love, but I wouldn't want to buy it. It belongs there. They've got plenty of seating space to choose from--tables and chairs, or couches and armchairs. And lovely pink Morpheus is good company. They've also got books. I recommend reading The Secret History. I love this place. It is my sanctuary, my sanity.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem in the south bend area!! I was in town visiting friends and we went here after our brunch at the farmers market. The place was so artistic! Loved the interior design and they even have a spacious sitting area on the back. I had the latte (as always) and it was very good. Macaron was also tasty! Can't beat the vibe here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend everyone try it out if you are in this area! Support such a great local business!

Yelp
WOW!!! This cafe is tops. Fresh roasted coffee, fresh baked treats and hand made bean to bar chocolate!!! It's TOPS. Every time I am in town I make this my first stop. It's a must try.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
Love their speciality lattes! They change them up so I'm always trying new things when I come in. It's a great place to sit and enjoy the ambiance while getting work done.

Yelp
My sister told me about this coffee shop since I'm visiting for the weekend. The cappuccino with oat milk was super good- right proportion and roast and did the job to wake me up from my jet lag. A few suggestions: -better directions to where you're located (aka the back alley). -option of half decaf for espresso. -decor could be better: if you're looking for hipster. This is my used to Brooklyn coffee shops. -not sure I'd stay to drink coffee there, vibes are dry here. Lol reminds me of San Francisco.

Yelp
I cannot believe this little place doesn't have more reviews. We came into town from Valparaiso, IN to attend the farmer's market. We stopped at The Early Bird and had amazing sourdough bread. I found out that this bread is sold here. My husband and I went straight to Cloud Walking and bought two loaves and two bagels. We had toast this morning with this amazing bread. All I can say is that I have never had bread THIS good. It is worth the price- don't bother complaining. Just buy it. The shop is cute and comfortable. The staff is super friendly and we loved it. I can see that even though I am an hour away, this will be a regular stop for me. So amazed at the craftsmanship here. We need more bakers and foodies in the world today. Please add a shop in Valparaiso!

Yelp
This place is super cute. It's a culmination of several small businesses in one location. A bit hidden and hard to find right now. The coffee is really good, arguably some of the best in the area. The macarons rival Chicago patisseries. We didn't try anything else yet but will definitely be back to try the bread And chocolates. They also have really neat artwork, plants, and mugs for sale. Exciting to see a new concept in this area.

Yelp
So welcoming !! Great amount of seating, and the baristas are soo nice and helpful !!!

Yelp
Finally got to check out the newly renovated Cloud Walking coffee shop and wasn't disappointed in their offerings. The menus, colorful decor and vast seating options make this place a favorite mobile office or great option for a coffee date. Their homemade bakery options are to die for - I got their apple and cardamom hand pie and I'll be back just for that alone.

Kara D.

Yelp
Love the coffee, chocolate, macs, baked goods... just everything. Amazing vibe, amazing people!

Jo H.

Yelp
Sweet coffee shop- we just had coffee and pastries which were terrific. Service was great. Only down side is that space is very open and airy, hard to have cozy conversation. Lots of lap tops, clean restrooms and chill vibe.

Mila B.

Yelp
Very hip and chill coffee shop, love their baked goods, and macarons are amazing! They also support local south bend entrepreneurs!

Yelp
Great pourovers, nice matcha lattes. Baked goods delicious. No pretense - just quality.

Yelp
Enjoyed my experience at Cloud Walking, this is a great little coffee shop! I tried a latte with house made basil syrup. It was flavorful, bold and not too sweet with the added syrup. I also tried 2 of the Macarons- slated Carmel and lilac. The lilac was a light flavor perfect for a summer morning. The salted Carmel was seriously the best macaron I've ever tasted. The salted Carmel was rich, buttery and I could taste the salt without it being overpowering. The seating area was comfortable, Wi-Fi worked great and plenty of private and group tables for whatever a group, couple or single is looking for.

April P.

Yelp
Coffee was tasty. Chocolate was expensive. Atmosphere was confusing and wildly hipstery. It was uncomfortable to have a conversation because of the quiet atmosphere, like we literally had to whisper. Parking didn't exist? Cute mugs. Uncomfortable chairs in the front. Personable staff.

Danielle W.

Yelp
Horrible planning for service. If you want to go for just a scone or to take out a loaf of bread - you have to wait 20 or 30 minutes for all the slow pour coffees to be ordered and sometimes even done first. This has happened to me multiple times. I just tried to go again and they just don't separate the activities very well. I will likely no longer try to go here for bread or baked goods even though they are quite good. It has also prevented me from getting the violet sky chocolate periodically . They should probably start a line for coffee in a line for everything else and make it very clear.

Brandon F.

Yelp
Very cute interior with a relaxing atmosphere. Simplistic menu, with all your major coffee selections. The coffee was good all around, I got a fan favorite, Vanilla Maple speciality latte. Good flavor and appearance, I was impressed. I got a fruit scone which was overall alright. My biggest pain point with the place was I didn't feel welcomed at all. I went on a Sunday morning around 9:45 am with my girlfriend, we weren't addressed or welcomed by any employees and couldn't even find the menu at first. We were aimlessly walking around trying to find some sort of reference on what they even offer, not to mention the service (when we got it) seemed like they had no desire to be there and help us. Mind you I'm a manager for retail so I understand to an extent of working Sundays, but still. We didn't even get a goodbye or thanks for coming in when leaving. All around it's a pretty location with great decor and aesthetic, but we personally experienced very dismal service. I wouldn't recommend unless you're going in with a large group for the back lounge area. 2 stars
