17 Great Waterfront Restaurants in Northern Michigan

"Who says million-dollar views have to come with million-dollar meals? In Sault Sainte Marie, known simply as the “Soo,” get a ¾-pound (that is not a typo) hamburger and a chocolate shake from a vintage drive-in that just so happens to hug the St. Marys River. This working passageway connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron by way of the Soo Locks. Eating in a car never looked so good." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
Great burgers, I prefer over west pier. However the Saint Ignace location is much better. The malts are ok here, and onion rings a bit over cooked. But the star of the show Big C was amazing. A must stop when in town.

Google
We're from NC and drove all the way up here to try this place out! Didn't disappoint!! So, darn good!! Such a cool experience and cool location to eat, and the food was great! Definitely need to come check this place out! Totally worth the drive!

Google
Super busy place for good reason, the shakes are amazing and I loved the chili. My favorites! Super friendly staff. Thank You!

Google
It's a great Lil joint to stop at. You can watch the ferry go to Sugar Island while you eat. They have awesome burgers and shakes. Watch freighters come in or out. The food is great, the prices are good and the atmosphere is classic! It's worth driving in. You don't get out of the vehicle, they come to you.

Google
After passing by two other Clyde's Drive-In locations during up U.P. vacation, we decided to stop in to location number three. This was our first time eating at Clyde's. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger deluxe (lettuce, tomato & mayo). Was it the best burger I've ever had? No, but it is in my top 10. It had a great traditional, homemade, smash burger flavor and was cooked to perfection! The cheese and bacon also had great flavor. The tomatoes and lettuce were fresh, however I would have preferred Iceberg lettuce for its crunch, instead of the lettucethey used. Their fries and onion rings were both good and crispy. However, their breaded cauliflower was a bit soft. They also have some of the best tasting coleslaw I've ever had! Our shakes were awesome! And our waitress was very friendly and did an excellent job! (Sorry, we forgot her name, but she was a thin girl with dark hair pulled back). Btw...this is a great for watching freighters (up close) and for watching the Sugar Island ferry.

Clyde’s is just one of those places you go to when you’re in the Soo! The nostalgia is really neat, it’s like taking a step back into the 1950’s. The service is friendly and efficient. It’s not the type of drive in where they put a tray on your window, but they do bring the food to your car. You can also eat at the picnic tables if you’d like. The food is about what you’d expect from a drive-in type establishment with generous portion sizes. I’d recommend at least coming here once during your visit to the Soo, even if for the nostalgia if nothing else! I got the famous Big C and enjoyed it. It’s also a bonus when you get to see a big freighter go by!

Google
I absolutely love burger joints like this. Burgers so tasty you just HAVE to write a review. I had a bacon cheeseburger, it was magnificent. I was a little disappointed they don't have steak fries, but I got the onion rings and they were great. I should also point out that I rode my motorcycle 500 miles to eat here, ate, turned around and went back. Granted I was looking for a good place to do a 1,000 mile ride, and I'm glad I rode to Clyde's. It was perfection and I would do it all over again.

Google
It’s a drive-in in a loose sense of the word, they do not hook a tray to your window. You just drive up and park, they see you, and come out and take your order and when they bring it out, it’s all bagged up in a brown paper bag. They DID have a black bean burger though that we were impressed by as it was one of the only vegetarian/potentially vegan items we found in the Soo. Coleslaw was good but had sugar in it. A little on the expensive side.

Yelp
Ordered cheeseburger and fish sandwich with fries. The food was perfection. So glad we stopped. Oh the service was excellent! Great place to enjoy sitting out with your dog.

Yelp
Girlll... I ordered Texas Toast (on the menu) and ??????????? The fried cauliflower SLAPS though. Very nummy. Ranch a little creamy for my taste, but yummy nonetheless. Hubby's burger looked great too. Usually a good experience, I just find the "Texas Bread" a little funny!

Yelp
We have visited Clyde's many times during our summer visits. Unfortunately after an hour wait at 2pm today, we won't be returning. We will visit West Pier instead. We placed an order for two burgers and fries and a lemonade. Our waitress never returned after waiting over 50 minutes for our order. We didn't even get the drink brought by. We had other obligations so had to leave but won't be returning to Clyde's Soo location again.

Yelp
Small diner with curb service or counter seating. Big juicy burgers and friendly service. Can't go wrong.

Jessica T.

Yelp
The food and service is always good at Clyde's. I have been going here for over 20 years when I visit the Sault!

Yelp
Prove your fortitude. Eat the Big C. Yelp won't let me only say one sentence in my review so here's a second sentence.

Yelp
A fresh-made burger drive-in celebrating 75 years in 2024 (founded 1949) located at the Sugar Island Ferry landing in Sault St. Marie, MI. Had been recommended to go Clyde's by a neighbor in Tampa Bay, Florida. Unassuming building built in 1962. Transported back in time for a 3/4 pound, freshly-formed and freshly-made cheeseburger (Swiss or Cheddar. AKA "The Big C") that was so juicy and good. Staff all smiling and enjoying what they do for the customer. Drive in or sit at the barstool counter. Enjoyed every bite and every minute.

Yelp
We were chasing ships from the locks to Rotary Park and relatives from MI pointed out Clyde's. Had dinner plans but the smell of the fryer! Changed plans... Sat inside, great decor, waitress was delightful, burgers and onion rings were very good, and very inexpensive. Highly recommended; clearly where the locals eat!

Yelp
Wonderful , great place for burgers and fries With curb service like old days No kiosk to put your order in

Yelp
This was a blast from the past. You can eat inside at a counter or have a server come to your car and take your order. We chose to order in-car and eat at a picnic table. The service was friendly. Mom had a chicken finger basket and I had a hamburger. Everything was freshly made and yummy. It's certainly a busy place. People would get food and then park in-line for the ferry to Sugar Island. Or get off the ferry and grab some grub.

Nicki K.

Yelp
A 50's diner vibe with drive in, carry out, or dine in service. The young lady who welcomed us and took our order was very sweet and prompt. One of the few locations in the area where my dining partner (vegetarian) had a dinner meal option that wasn't a garden salad. We dined in and enjoyed the view through the windows of the big boats going by. The dining area was very clean and seated about a dozen people for dine in. There were a few flies inside, but we easily ignored them. Keeping in mind that their doors are closing and opening constantly for car side service and customers coming in and out for carry out orders, which is bound to let some of these lil scavengers slip inside. My coney dog was great! A very nostalgic experience for me. My dining partner said the black bean burger was fairly standard and it was nice to customized the toppings (he added cheese, bbq sauce, and jalapeño.) We both enjoyed the fried cauliflower 10/10. I also got a butterscotch shake, which was just okay, I think it could have used more butterscotch. Overall we both really enjoyed it and would certainly go back!

Yelp
I met Clyde's son on Thursday at TQ brewery. We discussed the story and planned to eat here today so we headed here @12. Place was pretty packed. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger with fries and we sat by the river. REALLY good burger!

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Stopped while on vacation and had a lunch which we ate car picnic style watching freighters go by at Rotary park. Excellent food & service.

Yelp
I was directed here after receiving many recommendations from locals. This restaurant is an old school drive-in. It is located right by a Ferry. Servers will come to your car and take your order and then bring your food to you. I decided to go into the restaurant, where they have a few chairs along a small counter. They also have picnic tables in a park/grass area by the restaurant that you can go and enjoy your food. I got the Buffalo (Bison) Cheeseburger with bacon and a side of fries. Please do not mistake the Buffalo Burger for anything that has to do with the famous wings. It just refers to the type of meat. The burger was delicious. It was juicy and fresh. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. To top off my good food, my server, Martha, was simply awesome. She was very friendly and kept my drink filled. This old school restaurant, affectionally know as the Big C, definitely lived up to its hype.

Yelp
Good burgers, good fries, onion rings and good car service. Nice view of the river and the ferry.

Amy M.

Yelp
If your looking for a little taste a little bit of our life you have to eat here. This is one of the best places to get uou a burger and fries or pickles and watch the ferry life and all the boats on our beautiful Lake superior .
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
This place was packed but I was lucky enough to get a seat inside. It was a little more pricey than I had anticipated, but great food and excellent service. You can tell they make their own ranch, which I wasn't really a fan of. My boyfriend loved it though. I got a bacon cheese burger and it was amazing. I also recommend the deep fried pickles!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was amazing and the car-side ordering and delivery made it easy. We stopped in here a few times during a short trip and it was great every time. The burgers were really good, full of flavor, lots of cheese and bacon...one of my favorite places in all of the UP now. The waitresses were patient and friendly, and one gave us some sightseeing advice. I highly recommend this place. They're right by a park and you can watch cars travel via the Sugar Island ferry (which entertains the kids with its whistle periodically).
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! If it's a nice day, head over to Clyde's, get a burger and drive it over to rotary island park for best results. We had such a nice experience at Clyde's. Our waitress was great, the food came out quickly and we enjoyed everything. The location is nice since you can drive to the other side of the parking lot to watch the ferry go to the island and back or go across the parking lot to rotary island park and eat there. We didn't even realize it was a chain or restaurants until we drove by one in St. Ignace. We will have to try that one soon!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The location is absolutely awesome, you can sit on the locks and watch boats come through. The Big C does not disappoint- i added bacon to my burger and an order of fried mushrooms. The only thing that was not totally tasty was the mushrooms, the grease did not seem to be old, the mushrooms were just not that great. The burger was messy and filling!!!! I would come again. We did pull in 30 minutes before close and the faces of the employees did not look super friendly, but to their credit, they did not say anything snide or unwelcoming.
google avatar

Sylvia K.

Yelp
If you're here make sure to stop at Clydes drive In for a burger and fries. Delicious burger and crisp fries. Both delicious. Right outside the Sugar Island ferry and across the street from a golf course. The scenery is beautiful but please don't feed the seagulls.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
My go to place for BBQ pulled pork and fries. The bonus is eating and watching the ships go by.

Daniel S.

Yelp
What a delightful place. Are here two nights in a row on our last trip. Great burgers, fries and shakes. The kids menu here isn't as good as the location in St Ignace, but nothing to complain about. Will go every time we are in town. Nice view of the ferry while you eat.
google avatar

Larry K.

Yelp
Very similar to the old fashioned A&W Root beer stands. The staff comes out to your car, where you can place an order. I had a bison burger and was by far the best burger that I've tasted in Michigan. It put the Halo Burger to shame. The view is also a lot more scenic. The staff are extremely friendly with great attitudes. It's no wonder this place has been around for so long.

Deanna L.

Yelp
All I can say is, "YUM!" this place is nestled right against the route the Sugar Island Ferry takes daily. There are picnic tables, shade trees, a beautiful view of the water, the country club is across the street. Kids swim off a spot here and littles can wade with their parents. Lots of Canadian geese and ducks and seagulls come and they sound so fun. The Ferry comes and goes and the horn toots each time. It is a perfect summer place. You know, when you are out on the water or in the sun all day and you are so hungry? Well this is a place to go to and remember forever. Good job!

Mark S.

Yelp
Great burger as usual. Just a note. The Cook was wearing a face shield. Service was great. Watch the Fairy go to Sugar island and back.
google avatar

Liezl E.

Yelp
Pretty good cheeseburgers, even better when you stuffed onion rings in them. The lemonade tasted like crystal light though. Nevertheless, still probably the best meal I've had so far on this trip. It also provided a nice view of the ferry shuttle cars to and from Sugar Island and Canada. PARKING: It's Michigan. There's plenty of parking.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Delicious burgers and friendly staff! It's nice to be able to sit outside and watch the ferry.
google avatar

Stacie A.

Yelp
Great service. The car hop was a nice touch, during covid especially. I'm not a huge beef eater, but the burger was really good. My husband wants to go back already. We are here from out of town and will stop in again before we leave. The kids meals were great. Suckers were a nice surprise for the kids! Great little staple in the soo!
google avatar

Tracy K.

Yelp
One of my favorites, never disappointed, and always full when done. Curbside, eat in or take out, my favorite is to go to rotary park with food and watch the freighters go by,
google avatar

Edward B.

Yelp
their cheeseburgers and big c is a hit! very good! the delivery service is slow but worth the wait!
google avatar

Brittany K.

Yelp
I've been here quite a few times, best burger in town. The staff is for the most part very friendly, I've had one that was rude. The wait time is as expected depending on how many cars they have. Overall good food, I think it beats West Pier. (The other burger place in the Soo) Another plus, you can use plastic here! West Pier is cash only.
google avatar

Rae Ann V.

Yelp
No diet here, but worth every calorie! Burgers, fries, onion rings and shakes are yum, yum and more yum! Whenever we get to Sault Ste Marie, this is our go to! There are car hops that will take your order. I suggest taking it to go and walk down by the ferry or little park to eat. You might be in luck and a freighter may pass by!
google avatar

Annette L.

Yelp
I think the problem was I went in with high expectations that weren't met. I ordered a cheeseburger and a strawberry shake. The shake was made with syrup, which was a huge disappointment since a friend had said the shakes were great. The cheese on the burger was the liquid cheese restaurants use for nacho chips. It tasted strange and gave a weird mouth feel. The burger meat was good. Overall, the food was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there and we didn't go back for a second visit while we were in that area.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
I've only eaten here once so far but it was a really good bacon cheeseburger and the fries were excellent. Great service by a very nice staff. Clean inside but a little cramped. Reasonably priced. From what I hear it is a seasonal restaurant.
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
First time here, recommended to us by our cabin hosts. Excellent cheeseburgers, juicy, and the normal size is very big! Ask for grilled onions on your burger. Yum! And the malts, oh yeah, very malty. Fries were great too. Love the curbside service! Nearby Rotary Park was too buggy to eat outside, so we just sat and ate in the car and watched a couple freighters go by.
google avatar

Gary S.

Yelp
What a view! Very picturesque! My friend and I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed watching boats progress through the Soo Locks as well as the Sugar Island Ferry come and go. While doing that I grabbed a cheeseburger, fries and onion rings; my friend got a whitefish basket. Her order was better than mine. Trust the baskets, trust me. Also, unlike West End Drive-In they take and here.
google avatar

Yelp
This is really like stepping back in time. There are no corporate gloss-overs, no over-the-top 50's kitsch, no roller skates or contrived menus here, this is real drive-in food. Who would have thought Sault Saint Marie would harbor such a gem. You can eat inside or have curb side service. The curb side service was remarkably quick, efficient and helpful. The waitress helped place the food rack on my car window, helped dish out the food and anticipated all the needed condiments before I could ask. They offer the Big C burger for around $8 and this puppy is HUGE but I passed on it and had two regular cheeseburgers at $3.50 each (one burger was filling enough). These are how real hamburgers should taste, no fancy frills, just good quality meat and cheese on a soft bun wrapped in wax paper. The french fries are homemade and tasted great. Milkshakes were excellent (I had butterscotch). Even the chili is homemade (it had a ketchupy taste, I wouldn't order it again). There are other offerings like a buffalo burger, fish sandwiches and onion rings which I didn't try. Keep it simple and enjoy this place for what it is (and isn't). Great burgers and fries expound. If you are sick of the whole overpriced corporate burger thing I would suggest eating here in a hot second. I would definitely drive out of my way to eat here again. Highly recommended.

Yelp
While certain chain restaurants are in the business of selling a dining experience adorned in affected nostalgia, Clyde's Drive-In is the genuine article: a relic from the golden age of drive-in restaurants, still serving up gooey cheeseburgers, piping hot fries, and quicksand-thick milkshakes to those in the mood for a classic, fun fast food meal. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the "Big C" is their flagship burger, and it's a beast best left to the heavy hitters. Different variations on the standard hamburger include an olive burger, a burger topped with Swiss cheese, and my father's preferred guilty pleasure, the notorious pizza burger. The fries are salty and glistening with greasy goodness, and the chocolate shake is more of a decadent dessert than a beverage. All of this is set against the backdrop of the beautiful St. Mary's river, with the option to hunker down at the counter of the quaint diner, or to remain in your car with the windows down, feeling the crisp river breeze while the seagulls incessantly implore you to throw them a morsel or two (and, uhh, you really shouldn't). Ahh, takes me home...

Tristan N.

Yelp
Burger i was served had gray bacon on it. embarrassing to serve that. would not recommend

Yelp
Gotta love Clyde's! It's a drive-in with drive-in food: Burger's, shakes, fries, onion rings, plus chicken and fish products. If you go be sure and try a Big-C. It is a 3/4 lb burger and you WILL have leftovers! So enjoy! While you eat you can watch the ferry carry cars, watch the seagulls (just don't feed them!) or simply relax and let the carhops bring your food! Just be careful, it can get pricey. A Big-C is, as of this date, about $7.00. But if you split it with some fries and a drink and/or shake, you might be able to get out, under $20.00. Also I can't remember but they might not take debit or credit cards; I've always paid cash. I'll have to check it out next time.
google avatar

Shelly Z.

Yelp
We decided to try Clyde's after only going to West Pier for many years. We'll keep going to West Pier. Clyde's is ok, but the parking is too crowded. I had the Jr Cheeseburger and it was average. The fried cauliflower was good, and the chocolate shake was too sweet. Nothing to write home about! The service was very friendly, which is always a huge plus, and the reason for the fourth star!
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
Clyde's is the place that time forgot and that's in a good way. Good service, awesome burgers, and incredible shakes are all things that have helped sustain this icon by the Sugar Island ferry. If you're new to the Soo, make it a point to stop at this place and grab a bite.
google avatar

Donna R.

Yelp
The weather was too good to be inside, so we decided to try Clyde's. It was fun sitting outside, watching the boats. The burgers were okay, but the fries we're delicious!

Lindsay P.

Yelp
The view is amazing to eat your food. The food is average but way overpriced. People don't know how to park so I recommend once you get your food you move to a different parking spot.

Tina J.

Yelp
This is a great fun place. Beware they are cash only and there are no restrooms but an old fashioned drive in with good food was just what we needed.
google avatar

Debra P.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Sault Ste Marie, we found this little gem of a diner. It is a throwback to the little burger joint with a car hop and counter service. Both my husband and I had the regular burger and it was so good. One of the best we have had in a long time. We also sampled the fried cauliflower and it was very tasty too. We ate at the counter and the young woman who waited on us was so sweet but very efficient. We had our food in no time, but long enough for us to enjoy the view of the river and the ferry to Sugar Island. So if you're looking for good food and don't care about fancy ambiance, head to Clyde's.

Dan S.

Yelp
Nice old drive in, loved the onion ring and had a bison burger. My Grandson enjoyed his cheese burger and fries. Will definitely come back the next time I'm back in town.
google avatar

Travlin R.

Yelp
I have been going here virtually my whole life. This is a local favorite that thankfully is still around. Basic, quality fast-food served in the tradition DriveIn style, and is as good as I remember from my childhood. The prices are fair, the food is good, and does not have the franchise vibe that I can't stand. Located in the Que for the Sugar Island ferry. You can eat and watch the river traffic go by, along with the bird show (sea galls). I hope this place never changes. Whenever I go to the Soo, I go here first!
