17 Cool Shops in New York

"Hidden in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, a small establishment prepares and dispenses their own range of cure-alls and remedies just as they have everyday since 1838. C. O. Bigelow Apothecary is America’s oldest operating apothecary. Providing New Yorkers with a wide range of medicines, salves, balms, perfumes, and elixirs for nearly 200 years, the historic pharmacy aims to, in their own words, transport “customers back to a time and place of personalized attention, customized formulas, and healing, therapeutic preparations.”  Initially founded by Dr. Galen Hunter, ownership was sold to co-worker Clarence Otis Bigelow in 1880, starting a tradition where the store was passed on from employer to employee. Since 1939, three generations of Ginsberg’s have run a shop rich in New York history. Legend has it that Thomas Edison soothed his burnt fingers with a Bigelow’s balm whilst testing an early prototype of his light bulb. The company ledgers for 1905 and 1906 have a S. L. Clemens of 21, Fifth Avenue, regularly charging to his account there. Quite exactly what Mark Twain was buying from Bigelow’s isn’t recorded, but he was a faithful customer who paid his bills on time. Eleanor Roosevelt was also a regular customer when she lived on East 11th Street between 1933 and 1942. Bigelow’s is such an institution of Greenwich Village life that when its resident cat, Mr. Bigelow, was put to sleep in 1995 he was given his own obituary in the New York Times. Today, in an era where chain stores are driving smaller independent ones regularly out of business, Bigelow’s is still going strong. Dr. Hunter’s first creation, the skin replenishing Rose Wonder Cold Cream is for sale just as it was in 1838. Mark Twain might not be walking the aisles looking for barber cologne elixirs, and the eye drops for scratched corneas are no longer laced with cocaine, but a visit to Bigelow’s remains a refreshing step back in time. As their centuries old slogan goes, “If you can’t get it anywhere else, try Bigelow!”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"We love their big old-fashioned sign and window displays which make it look like it’s still a mom and pop shop from the 1960’s. Inside, it’s the opposite, full of their own ever-growing and excellent line of body care products, and the best of what’s new from other brands like Diptyque, La Roche, and Boiron. They take great care to stock the best offerings in beauty and body care, so it’s always fun to go and pick up a special treat. They also fill prescriptions."

Google
One of the oldest pharmacies in New York city. They say it has been open for 200 years. Staff was very helpful. They have the Mason Pearson brushes. They have diverse amount of products. You could easily spend an hour looking at all of their items. They did not have the color Mason Pearson brush I was looking for and the woman who work there was very helpful and said to call ahead because they get them in often. These brushes are usually hard to find in the states.

Google
The best pharmacy in NYC hands down! Carries so many French brands. Love the variety of things, such a gem. I wish we had one in Texas. They are so generous with the samples too.

Google
I placed on online order from Bigelow Chemists and I'm not even exaggerating, it got delivered less than 2 days later. Everything was expertly wrapped so that were no spills or leaks. I also got a couple of samples which was really nice. Its hard to find some French products but they had a great selection in various sizes. Will definitely be ordering from them again!

Google
Bigelow Chemists began operating before there were any large chain store drug stores! I am guessing that C.O. Bigelow’s has been in business for possibly two hundred years. I just checked and it is actually the oldest drug store in NYC! And it has EVERYTHING you could possibly want! However what I love the most about Bigelow’s is the delightful fragrances that embrace you when you walk into their elegant pharmacy. The front section of the retail section has a fabulous selection of perfumes and even if you are just interested in buying cough drops, by the time you walk to the rear of the store you’ll feel better!

Ordered 2 headbands last week and i received them yesterday. One was beautifully gift wrapped and they threw in some wonderful samples. Talked with 3 employees and all were super nice and polite. I wish I knew their names but I don’t. Great experience with them and grateful I found the shop. Maybe one day I’ll get to see the store in person. Thank you so much Anna

Google
I have been a longtime customer at C.O. Bigelow and have always appreciated the store’s unique charm. However, what I witnessed during a recent visit was deeply upsetting. After an Asian woman completed her purchase and exited the store, I overheard a staff member say something to the effect of “she was disgusting and dirty.” This comment was unprovoked, racially charged, and entirely unacceptable. Whether it was meant as a “joke” or not, such remarks contribute to the toxic environment that Asian communities often face, especially in a retail space that should treat all customers with dignity. I strongly urge C.O. Bigelow to investigate this incident seriously, provide anti-bias training for staff, and reinforce a standard of respect and inclusion. As a witness to this behavior, I felt morally compelled to speak up. Silence enables prejudice. Customers deserve better.

Google
Tried to return an unused umbrella less than 10 minutes after purchase — all tags intact. Staff refused, saying umbrellas are non-returnable. But the receipt had a list of non-returnable items, and umbrellas were not on it. No one mentioned it at checkout either. Even the manager wasn’t helpful. If it’s final sale, you need to say so. This is not acceptable. And seriously, why does an umbrella cost nearly $30? Go next door to the Japanese store — it’s only $10 there. Never coming back.

Google
these people are so kind!! i’m from texas and i stopped by because my mom and i were running late to an event and we needed something to tame her hair. the ladies went out of their way to help my mom with her hair, and even styled it for her! they are so so sweet and did not have to go out of their way but they did! love it here!!! if i lived in nyc, i would only come here to buy any beauty products that i need.

Yelp
Since 2006 I have used their brand shave cream in the green metal tube made by Probrasso. It is the best, smells great, easy on the skin, never left with razor burn Much better than the "edgy" can stuff I used before.

Yelp
I absolutely love their line of products! I was first introduced to them many years ago at Bath & Body Works. The Mentha Vitamin Body Wash and Lemon Hand Wash were the only items I would ever buy from that store. They could never keep it in stock so I started ordering them online directly from the source. Unfortunately, they have temporarily discontinued my favorite body wash for at least a year (maybe more). It kind of forced me to check out more of their body washes. So far, my favorite scents have been musk, eucalyptus, and bay rum. They've been good replacements. Also, the Lotio Mentholus is great for dry skin. It's soothing and relaxing, and has a great scent. I've never actually visited the store in NYC, but I wish they would branch out. I'd definitely seek it out if I ever go back to New York. They appear to have more products than what I've seen online. The ones I've tried are always reliable and have withstood the test of time. They are very gentle on sensitive skin. Their fragrances are relaxing. I'll continue to order them from their online store. I also hope they bring back my favorite Mentha Vitamin Body Wash soon. It has certainly been missed.

Yelp
its a very nice pharmacy but also a cute little shop. they have very nice gifts. i got a notebook, notepad, and soap. very friendly staff too. i heard about the passing of their cat :(. which i send my condolences to who sees this. a shame i never got to meet him/her.

Yelp
Very knowledgeable, good at communication, answered every question clearly, one of the rare compounding pharmacies, nice, clean store and gr8 staff!

Yelp
Bigelow pharmacy is a great place for skin care and hair care. This is also a pharmacy and great store for gifts. Very nice make up artist who helps you with cosmetics.

Yelp
Amazing smelling potions and lotions. A cut above your average bathroom soap. Luxurious hand creams. Great customer service.

Yelp
I became the victim of the vulnerable and naive fly who was lured into the spider's famous trap as described in "Will you walk into my parlour?' said the Spider to the Fly" by Mary Botham Howitt after reading all the lavish and braggadocio reviews. With a global pandemic raging and my work hours and workplace loaction distant which encumber the time for a visit by scheduling an appointment only, ergo I shopped via COB's website which is open 24/7 @ 365. I have a predilection for traditional brick and mortar physical shops and this pharmacy has a long standing history established in 1838 C.O. Bigelow is the nation's oldest apothecary. I wished I can physically visit and be fully immersed transported back in time. My supply of shampoo and conditioner are running low and I am seeking a set specifically for maintain round-the-clock moisture for dry and brittle hair. I am enamored with all things lavender specifically soap and bath gels. COB Lavender Peppermint Shampoo 10 oz, $18.00 COB Lavender Peppermint Conditioner 10 oz, $18.00 The shampoo and conditioner are mediocre, but both emit a light fragrance and does provide sufficient moisture to my dry hair damaged by the daily grind of the Sisyphus Task, UV rays, NYC disgusting mangy air pollution, and plaguing NYC's summer heat and high intense humidity. The products were satiated to get the job done. COB sends standard emails of "order confirmation", "invoice", and "order shipped" notifications. My order shipment was, unfortunately, delayed four days due to the effects of COVID-19.

Yelp
Justin was great and very professional. I highly recommend this place. Great customer service.

Yelp
I love this company's Bay Rum fragrance, as well as its Lavender & Peppermint shampoo. The Lemon Leaf eau de toilette is also quite pleasant. This NYC apothecary's been in business since about twenty or thirty years before the Civil War -- and with good reason.

Chris K.

Yelp
They keep records for years of your gift purchases and are very accessible for orders over the telephone. This is a classic, unique store. I always like to visit it when I am in the West Village. A landmark!

Yelp
Best in Manhattan, actually best of anywhere!! Products offered at a wide range cost wise, and always helpful and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Gladdy P.

Yelp
My favorite NYC pharmacy. My prescriptions cost me far less than when I had to use another drug store and they are ready for pickup quickly. The pharmacy staff is always pleasant and helpful. The app is great. Need anything else? You can get everything from toothpaste to Acqua Di Parma.

Yelp
This place is the best. When no other pharmacy has what you need, they do...and they deliver. Either with their own people or an outside messenger. I discovered them when I needed some specialized surgical bandages - the same day. They took care of all my needs. Just today, even to get a basic self-adherent wrap, not athletic, and no one else had it - CO Bigelow came through at the last minute. Nice to know they have been in business since 1810 ... must be because of their amazing customer service.... the absolute best.

Lee O.

Yelp
The pharmacy staff is brilliant and helpful and the on line communication as well. Alec, one of the owners, does an excellent job organizing a customer's monthly medications. Hélas, this is not the place for me. There is a delivery setup (I live far away and pay a small fee), and it seems that recently, waiting for the meds and wondering if they'll arrive is very stressful.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
This store is everything a business should be. Their customer service is top notch, aesthetic is genuine and on point. It makes me wish there were more of a local trustworthy "pharmacie" that is as common in France with great, popularly vetted cult beauty products as it is in the US, where there's just Rite Aid vibes, etc. If you only know of CO Bigelow through Bath and Body Works where they carry their mint lip balms, you're in for a surprise because the apothecary offers so much more including its own line of products which are all more than reliable (if you enjoy a bit of aromatherapy via trace essential oils here and there). Veronique Gabai fragrances and one of the few purveyors of Carthusia in the US, among many other offerings. Well curated products, excellent store policies and loyalty reward program, and did I mention the brilliant customer service?

Helene D.

Yelp
Terrible customer service in the surgical department. Went to Bigelow for my husband's first walker/rollater. The salesperson was not at all helpful - borderline rude to the point of offensive. Answered questions is a tone that implied that he had better things to do, and we were keeping him from them.
google avatar

Anne Marie F.

Yelp
I love the store and that it's one of the oldest drug stores in the city but I can do without the snotty mean girl gang behind the counter. I've been coming here for years and some things never change. I'm just not sure why it is that they act this way. There is really no excuse. Even when I refer this place to my friends who visit the city for the first or second time I always tell them that this is such a wonderful gem of a stop but to just ignore the mean girls behind the counter. For whatever reason they feel like they are better than you are and are not afraid to be mean.
google avatar

Liz K.

Yelp
I just love this place. I haven't been in person since the late summer but I've ordered from their website many times and it usually arrives to me in Brooklyn the next day. They are slammed for the holidays and my shipment appeared to be delayed or maybe there was a problem with USPS. Elliot was so friendly in response to my email. I would wait much longer to receive my package from C.O. Bigelow just because I'm happy to support a local ICONIC business. (I ordered the lemon body cream after they sent me a free sample in my previous order. Danggggg that stuff is yummy.)
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Interesting apothecary and pharmacy with a lot of unique and hard to find beauty, scent, and self care products. The staff are generally helpful. The only downside is most of the colognes and perfumes are behind locked glass cabinets and you have to ask for help (which I totally understand why) but it can stifle my interest because I always feel like I have to decide quickly. Still definitely worth checking out though.

Yelp
The best pharmacy in the world, period. There is a reason Mark Twain filled his prescriptions here! This is a secret, hidden gem of a pharmacy in New York City, where most people don't think to have their prescriptions filled. All the pharmacy staff knows you by name, and if you don't live close by, they will deliver to your house for $7 - a steal when a Metro Card just to get there is more than $5. One time I had my prescriptions called in, but they delivered it to my house without me asking and charged me the $7; when I told them I'd never asked them to deliver the prescription, they happily refunded the fee, no problem. Besides for the lovely pharmacy staff, there are so many positive things about America's oldest pharmacy. There is an adorable black and white cat who sometimes sleeps in the window and is sometimes roaming around the store, I even got to pet him one time even though a lot of the staff says he is not very friendly. They have really cool, old pharmacy "stuff" from the 1800's that could be from a museum, like the old scale they used to use to weigh drugs. And if that's not enough, they have their own skincare and cosmetics line, as well as products from brands that are hard to find. You'll never get bored in this pharmacy!
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Lovely store & helpful staff. There are 2 floors- downstairs has the pharmacy in the back and the front is OTC meds, products, beauty supplies and upstairs, through an elevator next door, are surgical supplies. Excellent inventory and well stocked.
google avatar

Jean K.

Yelp
This is really my happy place and has been since the 1980's!!! Knowledgeable sales people and the best products in the world. Hard to find things and products from Europe Worth a stop in even if you don't need anything and if you do stop in you'll find something you need or want.
google avatar

Eve B.

Yelp
This is the only pharmacy to go to. The staff follows up on EVERYTHING. I know that if a doctor sends a prescription that needs a prior authorization, even from the most disorganized office, the staff will follow up with the doctor and the insurance company, and I will get the prescription. I switched to Bigelow from the chain drugstores about 3 years ago, after too many issues with having to wait weeks for prescriptions that I need to take daily. The staff is lovely. Every single person. I am a pain in the ass person and am there at least once a week, and have never had a bad experience. Pluss..... MAKEUP COUNTER!!!!! You can try on lipstick and eye shadow while you wait. THANK YOU BIGELOW. In this chaotic, NYC existence is a huge relief to know that I don't have to worry about prescriptions getting filled.
google avatar

Pratik K.

Yelp
Been using their products since quite a few years now. Absolutely love their Lavender Peppermint body wash which smells incredible and is great for sensitive skin as well.

Shyneighbor U.

Yelp
I brought an older person here for help. The employee, Jazmine, was unbelievably gracious and knowledgeable. When I was there, I bought the Bigelo rose salve and it is perfection, with a wonderful smell. Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
It has a lot of products that you cannot find elsewhere in the city. The reps at the pharmacy are very nice and aware, but you have to work hard to get the attendants at the central island to pay attention to your existence. When they do, it feels as though they are too good to talk to you. Not all of them, but a good chunk. Bad attitude abounds - something for management there to work on.
google avatar

Eileen O.

Yelp
Well known Village pharmacy that high end range of specialty items from Marvin toothpaste to Lord Jones CBD gummies. Plus many of basics you can get at any drugstore. Excellent service.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Great place in such a great part of NYC. I am a big fan of CO products and since the only way to receive many is mail ordering this was such a great thing. I could have bought many more ha ha. Nice friendly service. Maybe a bit to clinging as I was looking. They also have many other shaving products. If there was one thing to complain it would be not everything had a price on it!! I just hate to ask all the time. The building was under some outside construction at the time in early April 2019. Was able to use a check in buy 50 get 10 bucks off!! But do go and just enjoy this one of a kind store.
google avatar

Cancan N.

Yelp
Do not even bother to shop here. Because one day they will tell you something, then the next they will forget what they've told you, and won't keep their words. I recently shopped on their website, and purchaded several items. And as a normal human behavior, I did not like all the products that I purchased since the sizes etc appears differently online. They say that shipping fee is sbout $7 and you get free shipping for purchases over $49. Then, there is NO FREE option actually to return or exchange. When I asked their customer service representative, she told me that she would send it at the end of the day. Then today, she is telling me I have to pay again for the shipping. Even when I ask her to return in the store, she waited at least 10 min to respond! Where else can you return the products, if you cannot return them through mail? This is a whole terrible Disappoinment! If you have been in this business for so many years, then you should treat your customers as you know them like a family.

Nell B.

Yelp
Bigelow is the best. The pharmacy is full of kind, knowledgeable people and really the only downside is that to get to the pharmacy, you walk through a store FULL of things you want to buy. Hands down it's the best place to buy gifts: everything I've ever given from Bigelow from fancy hand soap and lotion to lip gloss was a hit (plus Bigelow will wrap gifts beautifully). Bigelow is one of the oldest businesses in NYC, and there's a reason for that: they are a delight to have in the neighborhood. Stop in for a visit and see what great stuff and nice people they have.
google avatar

Zircon L.

Yelp
Great products! Insofar as sales associates are concerned: helpful assistance overall, but with a bit of snobbery. snob·ber·y /snäbrē/ of, characteristic of, or like a snob. "the writer takes a rather snobbish tone" synonyms: elitist, snobby, superior, supercilious; arrogant, haughty, disdainful, condescending; pretentious, affected; informal: snooty, uppity, high and mighty, fancy-pants, la-di-da, stuck-up, hoity-toity, snotty "the snobbish distinction between art and craft"

Yelp
I love that CO Bigelow is both a working pharmacy and extremely well-stocked with the best beauty/bath/toiletry brands you can think of. Every shelf is packed with awesome (though expensive) items with alluring packaging, sometimes not even in English. I'm a complete drug store addict (emphasis on STORE) so I was in heaven. Everything from Marvis toothpaste to Smith and Cult nail polish and of course their entire line of CO Bigelow products, which in the past I've only seen at Bath and Body Works (and I refuse to go in there because of the overwhelming smells) and in hotel bathrooms. It's a good mid-priced line of pretty good quality products in nice scents. I noticed that many other reviews have mentioned unfriendly service. Though I was just browsing around, I did notice that the lady behind the counter seemed to make a point of not saying hello or asking if I needed anything. So if I had a question or needed help with anything, I'm not sure that CO Bigelow is the first place I'd go, but if I want to look at and buy beautiful things, this is my place.
google avatar

Tricia N.

Yelp
I really like the selection of products, so I will be returning but the ladies up front are very rude. The entire time I was there, they talked to each other. The Dr. Hauschka products were filthy and covered in dust; why can't they dust the products while they are talking to each other? They also handed my sister her purchase of several products with a long receipt and did not even offer a bag, so as she's struggling to stuff everything in her purse she finally asked for a bag. There were no welcoming or departing pleasantries from them either. Other reviews echo my experience with the ladies up front, it's something that should be addressed but probably will never be addressed.

Ginny G.

Yelp
I called for an out of state gift card to be sent. The customer service representative Clara returned my call in 24 Hrs. I was pleasantly surprised for a quick response. Thank you.
google avatar

Humphrey B.

Yelp
I've used this pharmacy now and then for many years, as it is near where I live and always has everything. And I do mean every possible pharmaceutical you could possibly use. One of the things that it does that most pharmacies don't do is that it compounds drugs---that is, it can turn pills into salves and liquids, that kind of thing. Recently I had to get a liquid med for my cat. Lamentably, the cat hated it. So I thought, what the hell, I'll try to return it. And guess what? They didn't say no. They said yes! That explains why Bigelow has lasted as long as it has. The customer comes first! In fact, I am so downright floored by this experience that I have created a list by that name, and guess who's on top? Bigelow, you're tops!

Robin M.

Yelp
This is one of the best stores in NYC. So much history. Amazing selection of products and knowledgeable staff. Best of all - the service in the pharmacy. They even deliver. I trust them with my prescriptions, so much more than CVS.

Alison P.

Yelp
Bigelow's is the best pharmacy I know in NYC. I moved way uptown almost two decades ago and I still make the trip down there to fill my prescriptions. It's actually faster and the staff is more helpful than dealing with my local Duane Reade. No joke! May Bigelow's last in this city forever.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Excellent customer service, clean store, and a variety of selections.. I would recommend this store if you're looking for beauty products, massage ointments, and generally products in between the two. 4.5/5
google avatar

Ro R.

Yelp
Me LOVE this place---why wouldn't I? It has EVERYTHING a product whore needs or just want! They carry a lot of items that you cannot find at your local Sephora. The place is small but it carries so much things in such a cramp space! I never get star struck but Parker Posey (love her) shops here too!

Yelp
In 1838, when Van Buren was President, a small apothecary opened on Sixth Avenue just north of Clinton Place (now West 8th Street), and after it had changed hands a couple of times and moved two doors uptown, Clarence Otis Bigelow had established his "chemist's". The present building dates to 1902; the pharmacy still occasionally displays a 1905 ledger containing regular customer Mark Twain's name. Note the gas jets on the electric chandeliers: they still work, and in the 1965 and 1977 blackouts, they were turned on; Bigelow's remained open. The nation's oldest apothecary, Bigelow's has been a West Village mainstay for 160 years, providing prescriptions and healing remedies to countless dwellers. Originally located further south on Sixth Avenue, the store moved to its current location, at 414, at the turn of this century; and it was here that patrons like Mark Twain bought their toothpaste and later, John Belushi and Ed Koch would visit the soda fountain. "Bigelow was like Schwabs in Los Angeles explains owner Ian Ginsberg, evoking the West Coast drugstore where Lana Turner was supposedly discovered. "It was a hangout for people from all walks of life. There'd be society types next to Rockettes." Although the soda fountain was retired in 1984, Bigelow's is still a lively place with a diverse clientele, who now come there as much for the high-quality, hard-to-find beauty products and house-brand makeup line as for the other stuff.

Yelp
For a little while, Bigelow was opening franchises in different malls across the country - pretty sure all those stores have now closed but the flagship remains open, which is cool. This location reminds me a lot of Mertz's Apothecary in Chicago - there are obscure European brands, high end boutique fragrances and candles, shaving stuff for the mens, tons of bath products and some things you've never heard of. In addition, they sell accessories, have a full service pharmacy counter and stock essentials in addition to the fancy stuff. If you're overwhelmed by the selection, their house brand of products is good quality at a reasonable price point. You can also buy their branded products at most Bath & Body Works stores too if you're not close to a Bigelow or don't want to order on line. I'm a bath & body junkie, so places like this make me very happy!

Yelp
C.O. Bigelow is amazing! They make awesome products, and I buy the lip shine for my partner because it feels nice to kiss :-) The staff is lovely and they helped me find other brands that were just right for me. Thank you!

Yelp
I had no idea that CO Bigelow was bigger than bath and body works. But boy was I wrong.... I used to just buy the lip gloss and soap at bath and body works...but this place has about 10 different flavors (smells?) of CO Bigelow products! And its all very well stocked. They also have a really wide array of high end beauty products (aka bumble and bumble).. the prices are pretty on par with salon prices.. so not necessarily getting a price save but this place definitely has a leg up when it comes to being so well stocked. The service is hit or miss...some of them ask if they can help and some you have to wave your hands at while standing at the counter for a few minutes asking if you can pay for your grapefruit scented lotions so you can leave.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Bigelow for eons, but I was walking by there this evening and couldn't resist going inside. This store is the "ultimate" for wonderful soaps/etc. and many other beauty items (of course, there are no bargains - but the selection is terrific). Bigelow is also still a pharmacy and it's been in existence since *1838* ("the oldest apothecary in America"), so there's a wonderful sense of history inside. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because no one asked if I needed any help (and they certainly didn't seem to be short-staffed).

Yelp
The best thing on earth is a pharmacy crammed full of solutions for your hair, skin, nails, eyes, etc etc. Love it. Why don't they stock pharmacies like this in San Francisco?

Yelp
My experience visiting this place was just limited to getting some pharmacy. The store itself carries a lot of other stuff apart from pharmacy. The staff was helpful and was wait wasn't long to get my prescription. I will come back here to get some stuff apart from medicines!

Yelp
Shmancy pharmacy with very, very expensive stuff for sale. I go here only to a) buy shaving products that I can't seem to find elsewhere, and b) buy a couple other similarly rare products as gifts around the holidays. For finding those unusual but special items, this place is great. The downside is that it is incredibly cramped, with aisles that can barely accommodate one person passing through -- unfortunately, it can get very crowded during the usual prime shopping times. And I've found the staff to be generally disinterested unless you're a lady-who-lunches who's clearly ventured down from the UES to restock your makeup/perfume/etc.
