We were craving Vietnamese food so my husband and I decided to try this restaurant on a Sunday evening. It's located on telegraph Ave in Oakland so the area is not the safest but it's not the worst either. There is no parking lot so it's all street parking. We came early so we didn't have to look hard to find a spot.
As we entered into the restaurant, it was about 30% full at around 6 pm. They have a few tables outdoor while the indoor spot is not too big. We saw a few tables but mostly bar seating. It has a hipster vibe and the decor is more on the industrial side. Photographs lined one of the walls and I can see why some people mention that the place is very IG worthy. After we got seated, the menu was presented to us. Only after we order, the wait staff provided us with water.
We ordered the sugarcane shrimp rolls (5/5): good portion size, the shrimp went well together with the herbs inside and when dipped in the sauce, it was very refreshing
sesame crusted chili ribs (4/5): the crust was so delicious, it was crispy and the sauce it was covered with was sweet and spicy with a hint of saltiness. The meat was tender and it just fell right off the bone. However, the portion size was small relative to the cost of the dish
Bo Luc Lac (2/5): this was disappointing, the most expensive dish out of the meal, but with just a few pieces of beef. Taste was good but the inside was raw. We had to send it back and after recooking it, it was more on the medium side. Some of the beef pieces had too much tendon in it and was so chewy that my jaw hurt afterwards. Presentation looked nice but portion size was just too small. The beef pieces would taste more tender if filet mignon was used instead (even though the menu stated its filet mignon, we have doubts due to the amount of tendons we found in each of the cubes we ate). We wouldn't recommend this dish if you decide to eat here.
Service was average. We had to flag down the wait staff when we needed something, our water glass was refilled once.
The bill came out to $90+ for the 3 dishes. Essentially, it's roughly $30 per dish which is on the pricier side given the value of the meal. Tip is set at 18%, 20%, and 22% and there is also a 4% health mandate charge that the restaurant shift to customers to provide their staff with benefits. When paying, the staff will hold the credit card machine in front of you which puts pressure on the customer to decide on a predetermined tip on the spot. Given the mediocre quality of the service and meal, we would likely not return. It's gotten really expensive to eat out in the Bay Area nowadays but if I had a choice to dine at a Michelin star restaurant vs this restaurant with the expectation to pay at least 22% extra charges on top of the tax and the meal cost, I would gladly go with the Michelin star restaurant any day.
