We chanced upon this Vietnamese restaurant on a Saturday lunch time.
It seemed nice enough. The staff were friendly. We didn’t wait to get a table downstairs. Right by the pass. It’s like the chef’s table which was cool. However, we did have to wait before we can order. And again after we ordered.
We started with the green papaya salad. Like the ingredients list on a bottle, it did say purple cabbage first. So we got plenty of that. It had some herbs and keffir leaves which were nice, but perhaps some coriander would lift the taste. The sauce is not as intense as we had in other places.
The Bun Moc was new to us. The roast belly pork, the pork balls and quail eggs were all decent. The soup is not very strong in flavour. It was also only warm. Luckily I didn’t have any raw beef slices. (I can see why other reviews suggested the beef wouldn’t be cooked.)
Maybe the beef+pork broth is just not as fragrant as the beef broth I’m used to with pho from other places. We also don’t get any extra bean sprouts or fresh herbs like mint and coriander.
We had a Bun Thit Ga Nuong which was nice. The chicken was tender. Again, we think the flavour could be a bit more intense.
Most of all, for £18 and £19.50 a bowl, they don’t feel like Vietnamese street food. Appreciate Covent Garden area is not a cheap location, but for a similar price, you might get a better bang for your buck in other establishments such as Cay Tre.
