An art-filled downtown showpiece from the team behind Barbacoa, Coa de Jima leans into upscale Mexican cooking—think kurobuta carnitas and lobster tacos. Regularly highlighted by the Idaho Statesman and Downtown Boise, it’s a festive late-night scene.

I took a coworker and my best friend here for a Girls Night Out, and the entire experience was wonderful. Our waiter "Rusty" was fantastic. We loved our patio experience and excellent service. We went during Happy Hour. The Mojachete was a wow factor we could NOT pass up. I'd highly recommend it because it comes on fire, but it is also tasty and delicious with fresh homemade flour tortillas. The guacamole was delicious, and I loved my margarita with a seasonal popsicle. Everything here is made with fresh ingredients, a passion, and love.

This is a super hip Mexican restaurant in downtown Boise. We got in at the bar right away without reservations on Mother's Day and had a lovely meal with great service. We shared a Caesar salad with roasted corn. I had the chicken soup, which the server said was the best deal on the menu, and easily the best chicken soup I've had in a long time--clearly house made. My husband had the airline chicken. Our neighbors had the flaming surf and turf. There is a secret door to the restrooms--impossible to find without someone showing you the way. Clever!

Great food! Great drinks! If you're sitting inside it might be a bitter ambiance. The outside can be frantic with lots of cars and other sounds of the evening. Sometimes lots of drunk people walking by and that is out of their control. But you can control where you sit The food was fantastic. Appetizers were nice. The entrees came out in a nice, timely fashion. I didn't know what to get and just got the special which turned out to be pretty amazing. Definitely go for drinks if anything! Great flavors. The use of tequila is wonderful. The inside has a really interesting interior decoration. The bathroom access, unmarked, is a pretty cool way to get to the back of the restaurant and see all the different decor. Parking is parking. Downtown Boise has plenty of spots nearby and plenty of parking garages nearby. Be ready to pay or walk from the green parking zone that stops charging after 6:00.

Coa de Jima cuisine is truly exceptional. We had anticipated a delightful romantic Birthday/Valentines dinner. However, upon being seated, we were placed at a large table for 8 near the back entrance where the temperature was uncomfortable. When we requested relocation to a more intimate table, we were informed that the restaurant was fully booked, which ultimately proved to be inaccurate. There were several tables available. This experience was decidedly disappointing due to its lack of romantic ambiance for us.

Hands down the best restaurant experience in downtown Boise! Coa De Jima delivers on every level ,from incredible food to a cozy, luxurious atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped into something special. The highlight of my meal was the seafood Molcajete, absolutely bomb! Packed with authentic flavors, perfectly cooked seafood, and a rich, savory sauce that brought everything together. Every bite was a celebration in my mouth...lol My server Anna, truly made the night unforgettable. Her warmth, knowledge, and enthusiasm elevated the whole experience. She recommended amazing dishes and even a special dessert that blew me away, a special request but she made it happen! The ambiance was elegant yet inviting, and the view of the sunset over the city added that magical touch. Watching the golden hour light spill across downtown while enjoying my drink and meal was the perfect way to end the day. If you're in Boise and want a top-tier dining experience, Coa De Jima is the spot. Authentic, flavorful, stylish, and unforgettable, especially with Anna taking care of you. I will definitely be back

Google
Coa de Jima is one of the best spots to go in downtown Boise if you’re looking for amazing service and excellent food. I have been here several times and Daniel has been the best server I have ever had, he is incredibly knowledgeable and very welcoming! If you make a reservation, try to ask to be in Daniel’s section if you want the best dining experience ever. The food is always perfectly balanced and curated and it seems like the staff puts a lot of time and care into making each dish. The artistic and creative atmosphere create an incredible dining experience.

Well, first off. This was my first time visiting Coa de Jima and I was excited. My husband and I got there about 615pm on Saturday. We were greeted by the two hostesses and I told her there were 2 of us. She seemed very " put out" when we did not have reservations. She said we could come back in an hour or sit at the bar. (There were two seats available) But was very rude about it. We sat at the bar, but as I was looking at the menu, I just felt like I was a nuisance and wasn't even welcome. The bartender was very polite but had no idea how we were treated as we entered. I told my husband I couldn't even begin to look at the menu because I didn't even feel comfortable being there because of our " non-reservation". We then got up and went to the Front Door, where we were greeted with kindness and a place to sit. I'm not sure if I want to go back after that experience. I already have bad anxiety out in public as it is and to be treated like we were, I don't want to spend my hard earned money at a place I'm not welcome.

Google
It was a very unpleasant dinner. We ordered our food and we waited for about 45mins until the food has finally reached our table. The food is really tasty and huge, I couldn’t finish it and I asked for a box. I am super disappointed when I reach home. I appreciate the server help me to box my seafood Mojacate but why they never pack the broth together. The whole dish is become very dry now without the soup. A comparison of what I got in the restaurant versus the one they helped me to pack.

Yelp
Dear restaurant owner/GM, I'm visiting from Seattle and spent 20 years in the service industry. While dining at Coa De Jima the service was EXCEPTIONAL! It was textbook great service that unfortunately I have not found in Seattle post 2005. It's a shame, because Seattle used to provide this attentiveness to detail and it feels like a lost art. For starters, we were greeted at the entrance and the hostess was very nice. A staff person offered us a selection of sparkling or distilled water and poured our water. Our server who was also the bartender (gentleman with a mustache) was very attentive and was multitasking between the bar and our table. Great job! I asked for directions to the bathroom and another server (curly hair femme presenting) walked me to the bathroom and I shared my appreciation for great service within thd first 7 minutes. Our server brought out three long planks of food stacked on his arms. I used to do this when I served and it's hard. He also packed our food really carefully and took the time to not dump the leftovers into boxes. While we exited the restaurant, a dapper dressed gentleman thanked us for dining and shared that he appreciated us coming in. Now, let me highlight the food. The mango tuna was outstanding and the sauce was nicely balanced. The portion was huge and enough for 3 people. I appreciate the generosity and creativity with the poke style Latin fusion. The pork belly appetizer was crispy and juicy and this app felt like a main. I couldn't tell if the tortillas were house made and they were toasted nicely. The slaw cut through the fat and I liked the acidity with the salsas. The guacamole was outstanding and the house made salsa trio was delicious. Although we tried only three dishes, the flavor profiles were robust and flavorful and everything complimented each other with my virgin michelada. Good choice on the Heineken NA. I would like for the bartender, kitchen staff and the server with the curly hair to be acknowledged. They worked very hard and it is evident. Some of Seattle restaurants are including a 22%, gratuity for mediocre service. Nicer houses have some servers come to work in dirty converse and random t shorts. Service seems robotic and human interaction is not valued as much. What a wonderful restaurant to try. I'll be returning the next time I'm in town and will try the dish with the flambé effect. Great job Coa De Jima. Please share this message with all of your staff. Apologies for the length. I am serious about my food service. Truly refreshing like the salsa on a 85 degree Boise summer night.

Yelp
A part of the Barbacoa restaurant group, Coa De Jima is certainly a great spot for a night out. The decor and overall feel of the restaurant and bar is 10 out of 10 knockout. From the built-in tree decor, they have lining the bar to the intimate booths that you sit at the attention to detail is out of this world and the Mexican touches make it feel authentic, yet sort of campy in a good way. The cocktails as per usual, we're incredible. The Winnie the Pooh was such a good drink. A little honeycomb stir on top of it is an amazing detail. We also tried the hibiscus sour and the old-fashioned, which were both good. The traditional Molcajete is a surf and turf type entrée that they Lambay at the table, which is always so fun. And the steak Picado was cooked to perfection. This bar gets busy so the cocktails can come out a little bit slower than some other places, but you can expect that on a packed night. I also wish they served tacos during their dinner service that is an item that they only serve during the happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM. I just can't give five stars when they don't serve tacos all night at a Mexican themed bar. Since this is part of the group that is behind Barbacoa, you can expect to see some pretty high menu prices entrées ranging from $45-$65 but the appetizers are a really good price, and the drinks I would say our averaging $13-$16. Definitely a more upscale place perfect for a date night bachelorette party a birthday celebration graduation! Definitely check it out. I will be going here again and I really enjoy their cocktails which I know I already said, but truly, you've gotta try them.

Yelp
First of all the ambience is amazing. What a dark and mysterious restaurant with spectacular decor... Very moody and sexy. The restaurant was busy and we didn't have reservations but we were able to get two spots at the bar. The bar staff was friendly and engaging.. and they eventually helped us get a table for dinner. My friend and I shared coconut shrimp appetizer then she had the fish tacos and I had scallops. Love the incredibly crunchy shrimp especially the sweet and spicy sauce that they poured over the top of it ....only Mildly spicy. Which I thought was perfect. The fish tacos were generous in portion and crunch level. Which I had never had in a taco before but I enjoyed immensely. My scallop dish was rich and filled with peppers and corn and cream and was truly decadent.

Yelp
This is the mini version of barbacoa in a way. It's not too big of a place but the decor is beautiful you definitely get a nice vibe from this place the bathroom door tricks everyone. The drinks are absolutely amazing I really enjoyed every drink I had. The mesquite was actually really good. I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection so juicy not dry and the rice was good the sweet potato was absolutely good. Our server was just perfect. He was attentive, nice patient and overall we enjoyed the experience

Yelp
Great happy hour although the bartender got a little mouthy. All in good fun I'm sure, but I was embarrassed by his public shaming of me taking a drink picture.

Yelp
Awesome decor and vibe. Service is top-notch. Guacamole and chips app was good. Corn app, not so much. Pass. Lobster tails were delicious. Steaks were also good. Rice is flavored very uniquely, but good. Enchiladas were full of chicken and flavorful. Portions are good sized.

Yelp
We had such a great experience at Coa de Jima. The food and drinks were fantastic. But what made it more than just a dining experience was our server, Hannah., She was fun, interactive and described each dish so well that we wanted to try everything!! 5 stars to the ambiance, food and service!!

Yelp
This place is incredible. I try to go here every time im in Boise. Put yourself a favor and order the ranch water. The only place I've ever been to that makes them in the bottle. It's really awesome.

Dan V.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Coa de Jima you are missing out! The Birria Taco's are insane. The Carne Asada Quesadilla is delicious. Patty's Coconut Cheesecake was a great finish! Two for one Cadillac Margaritas for happy hour until 6:00? Really? Yes!!! Max our waiter made this dinner experience the best we've had in Boise during our travels. Enjoy!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Loved it! The Mojito was a slight twist from the original, very refreshing. The chilled avocado soup is ample and delicious, could easily serve as an entree. The chile relleno appetizer had some kick, and again, a generous portion. The Tres Leches presents well, but it included a off-putting ingredient (goats cheese?) Service was kind, albeit a little slow for a Monday. Great Boise alternative as every Basque restaurant was closed on a Monday night.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere and service. I've been here twice and the service was exceptional both times. The servers are very knowledgeable and attentive. Decor is visually stunning and food presentation is super fun.

Yelp
While visiting for work I found this lovely place and I couldn't be happier with the discovery. The service was excellent. We shared the Molcajete and I would definitely recommend it for two, so good. The outdoor seating remained me of the French quarter in New Orleans. I would definitely recommend this place for a date night or just to experience so high end Mexican food paired with great wine!

Yelp
Very good! Really enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere of this restaurant. I would absolutely come back. Great service.

Yelp
Coa de Jima is truly a gem! We came to celebrate a birthday brunch and upon walking in, we were struck by the moody yet inviting ambiance. I appreciate the unique and tasteful decor as this felt like more than a cookie-cutter restaurant. We were sat in a round booth at a large wooden table. Speaking from personal experience, I'd like to remind all to check the booth before leaving as it's easy to leave items behind because of how the booths are shaped as well as how dark it is in the restaurant! We ordered the chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, salmon omelette, and French toast. The chilaquiles, especially with the addition of carne asada, stood out as my favorite. The combination of crispy tortillas, rich sauce, and tender carne asada was simply perfection. Service was friendly and efficient. The employees shared the history of the restaurant. The restaurant is run by the family who started Barbacoa. The wife of the owner painted all the paintings including the painting leading to the bathroom. This is definitely an elevated dining experience in terms of environment and food quality... and price. I would highly recommend Coa de Jima for celebratory events. Our experience at Coa De Jima was fantastic, and we are already looking forward to our next visit. The brunch was delightful, and we can't wait to return for happy hour or dinner to explore more of their menu!

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. It was played well and everything was top notch quality. Amazing taste. Honestly, the only thing we ordered that I would not order again is the bone marrow. While it tasted good, as a 17$ add on, I don't think it was worth that. The whole wait staff was very attentive and very willing to help with any questions we had. One person at our table spilled a whole dipping cup of butter for the lobster all over the place and they were super fast to help clean it up! We were celebrating a birthday and when they brought out the desserts one had a sparkler thingy in it. Super cute. They boxed everything up for us nicely.
google avatar

Gabby T.

Yelp
Service was accommodating and attentive. Food was good. However, the portions are really big with a high price point. We got the tuna tartar which is $20, I almost kept walking just because of the price point. I'd personally rather have a slightly smaller portion for a slightly lower price point, we couldn't finish it. The oysters come "the chefs way"? I wish they were just classic oysters with the Mexican style accoutrements on the side like a typical oyster presentation. Lastly, the Cadillac marg tastes like Cointreau only, just not well balanced at all. If this place literally just lowered priced and portion sizes we would come often still but with the large price tag for one dish and half good cocktails, won't come back.

Yelp
Great vibe and food was outstanding. The manager Justin and his team delivered amazing service through every part of the evening. The hostess Natalie was wonderful, bartender Corbin was amazing and super knowledgeable about bourbon and tequilas. The rest of team was also phenomenal, shout out to Daniel, Nolan and Hailey! Thank you all for the great experience tonight!
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
The food here is delicious as expected from a restaurant in the Coa family. The quality of food is worth the price. Came here tonight to celebrate a birthday and when we have gone to Barbacoa they are very excited and aware of celebrations for any reservation. Usually they will celebrate with an extravagant display of glowing cotton candy, this restaurant.. not so much. Not sure if our waiter was just pulled too many directions to remember but it was mentioned to them that we were here to celebrate a birthday. Additionally, I would recommend for the shrimp in the fajitas they should have the shell taken off the tail. I had to pull apart each shell from the shrimp before adding to my tortilla. I probably won't come back to this location vs the other two Coa locations. Our service was much more attentive and personable at the other locations.

Yelp
Drove all the way here from Portland to meet an old friend that I hadn't seen in years. I loved that it was upscale but casual Mexican food in the middle of town. We had some ceviche as our appetizer, the Kurobuta Carnitas and the duck carnitas quesadilla. I was craving cheese and that duck quesadilla hit just right. This was a solid Mexican place in the middle of somewhere I didn't expect to have Mexican food at all. We sat on the front patio and people watched as we caught up on life. The staff were great, extremely patient and helpful. Parking is NOT fantastic. While this Boise definitely doesn't have the same parking issue as Los Angeles, I did have to circle the block to find a spot and park down the street.

Travis N.

Yelp
Food, drinks, atmosphere, service and location are all fantastic! 10/10 would recommend for date night or a high quality night cap.
google avatar

Yelp
Coa De Jima is now my favorite of the Coa Trilogy. Really, really good food and their signature service. However, it's the toned down ambience that does it for me. Barbecoa is so overwhelming, and over the top. I can't really enjoy myself there because it's too much. Too loud, too many over the top decorations, the meat market vibe. Coa De Jima, especially earlier in the evening is just right. Still very upscale, but much more manageable. Highly recommended and looking forward to eating there again very soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Fabulous!!!!! Great meal, service, and atmosphere. Everyone really cares, especially about the food. Octopus appetizer off the charts, fun cocktails, bone marrow tacos a true indulgence as was their take on tres leches. Oh my, what a treat.

Yelp
We did brunch here this morning (Sunday). We had a reservation, although I'm not sure we needed it, but we were seated promptly and our waiter did a great job. My wife had the chilaquiles which she loved, and I had the Carnitas Eggs Benedict- also delicious. The drinks are good - Bloody Mary and Mimosas. The restaurant is a fun place to eat with great ambience. I highly recommend it. BTW, we had dinner here once before and it is also fantastic!!

Yelp
Outstanding spot. The food is top notch and in a great location. Love everything about Coa

Yelp
This place is absolutely fantastic! First time eating here with family in town and I will say it was so good. I ordered blackened halibut fish tacos and they were amazing. It was so good we came on my birthday (May 1st, 2024) and I tried something new which was the Honey Ancho Chili Salmon and that was amazing! I loved it! Service was great as well.

Yelp
Great atmosphere here and even better customer service! They treated my group of friends and I great here & we got this lovely huge table in the back of the restaurant that sat about 6-7 people comfortably... as pictured our table had a chandelier above it with a view of the entire restaurant floor and we didn't even make reservations for it! The prices are expensive for the full course meals so expect to spend over a $100 bucks easily for a family of 2+ HOWEVER their appetizers are cheap & HUGE portion sizes, the food in the pictures is actually our appetizers we got and they fed all 6 of us w/just 2 appetizer dishes! The drinks here are also lovely and loved our old fashion and margarita drinks! Keep in mind parking is only street parking here and will be coming back!
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of trying the new Barbacoa in Eagle and it lived up to the reputation of Barbacoa and the Coa De Jima downtown. This family really leaned into Robert's legacy and delivered the over-the-top experience and backed it up with excellent quality and service. We all had different seafood entrees and everyone really loved what the ordered. The table side guacamole was a bit off with huge steams still attached to the cilantro making it taste bitter. For a brand new restaurant they passed with flying colors and really delivered a great experience.
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
We love molcajete dishes and this seafood one is the best we've ever had! Super tender calamari and octopus, fresh tuna, perfectly ripe plantains, a large scallop, giant shrimp and lobster tail. Excellent quality on the cheese and cactus too! Superb flavors on the achiote sauce. Top it off with fire...this is a WOW dish. Tuna and mango appetizer was recommended and did not disappoint. Such a great value for like 1/3 lb of sashimi grade tuna and what seemed like an entire ripe mango. Very generous portion and so tasty. Kids quesadilla - kid approved! Our kiddo loves quesadillas so it worked out great since we weren't expecting any kids food. Although it's not a "kids" restaurant it worked out great since it has loud acoustics and their noise just blends in. The sorbets were small but very high quality. The mocha almond fudge ice cream in the complimentary anniversary dessert was so yummy! What a nice treat. The service was above and beyond (although it was a Monday night after 8 pm) and notably remarkable. We'll be back again soon! And we also hear that the owners are opening a seafood directed restaurant in Eagle later on this year ...YAASSSS!!!
google avatar

Jack B.

Yelp
The service was outstanding! Our server, Anna, was one of the best servers we've had in a long time. She made us want to come back. Unfortunately, the food was a let down. For the price, I would have expected a much more premium Mexican themed food experience. The chips are not warmed. The enchiladas were cold and barely had any sauce. All you could taste were the corn tortillas. The $60 ribeye steak was severely undercooked, cold to the touch in the middle, and not trimmed at all. It was almost 50% fat. I understand that it's a ribeye and some fat is necessary for flavor, but this was overwhelmingly unpleasant. Hoping they make their food better to match the incredible atmosphere and service!

Carrie R.

Yelp
Had brunch this morning. Food was amazing! Our server, Kyle was outstanding. Thank you Hailey, for the recommendation! I would highly recommend visiting Coa De Jima!

Yelp
Wow, found in yelp looking for Mexican food. I was surprised how nice this place is. Great staff and even better food. The spinach salads are big. Had the fajitas and what a dish.

Yelp
Wife and I hadn't been here since last summer so we decided to stop in for a chill lunch. The hostess and server, Mirna, were great. However, there definitely wasn't enough back up when we came in. Service was too slow due to their only being one server on. More servers came on later but seemed to just be chatting amongst themselves and their friends at the bar. Management seemed to be doing the same thing. We started off with the seafood cocktail which we've gotten several times in the past. There was a piece of octopus that was either raw or just extremely slimy. This was slightly off putting. Coupled with the slower service and music playing that reminded me of going to a night club when I just turned 21, we decided to venture elsewhere. If I'm going to spend $100-150 on a lunch I don't want to feel like I'm at a the Cheers bar where staff just chats with all of their friends I am not sure if we will be returning or recommending this spot anymore.

David C.

Yelp
Ok so we just got home from here..... the food was great, our server Hanna was excellent, buttttt...... we we're the only minority couple in there and I don't know if it had anything to do with that but all the busboys and the floor manager were going to every other table constantly picking empty glasses asking how everything was going and not once came to our table, our waitress had to be the one removing all the empty stuff and I was starting to really pay attention to all that as the evening went on.. it really bothered me because we spent a lot money there.... So if your a minority just be wary.. but Hanna our waitress was the saving grace.

Yelp
Not like the original Coa but still good. Small space. Service was pretty slow. I would go back, just have to know I'll likely be there longer.

Yelp
Came here this past Sunday for brunch and can't believe I hadn't found this place sooner...what a great surprise! We made a reservation which I would recommend because it can get busy. Walking in loved the vibe of this place with the great decor. A cross of very modern, eclectic and Mexican decor. Service was 5 star all the way! Our server Mirna was the difference maker! I hope the owners read this because she is a true gem and made our experience the 5 star experience. After being seated she came over and was so welcoming and answered a few of our questions. For food I personally had the Chilaquiles with added al pastor. This dish was everything you want in this classic dish with plenty of cheese, sauce, meat and more cheese served on top of very fresh tortilla chips with 2 over easy eggs. I loved it and ate every bite. Everyone else in our party also loved their dishes. From Birria Tacos, al pastor breakfast burrito and the carnitas benedict. We would for sure come back and next time try out some of their craft cocktails for sure.

Yelp
Quality of the food is excellent. And the service is outstanding. From the time you walk in until the time you leave the service is wonderful. Seasoning of the food is amazing.

Yelp
They overcharged us. We were there the week of thanksgiving. They talked about happy hour prices but then billed us full price. We were kind and had a table of over ten people. Probably fine for two people. Not going back with a group.

Yelp
Gave Coa De Jima a try to see what the rave was about! The atmosphere was nice and vibey.. Our server was kind. Service was great. For starters we ordered margaritas and guacamole with tortilla chips. Seeing the menu caught me off guard, it's a limited menu with not many options. I ordered the dish "Puerto Nuevo Lobster" included two Maine lobster tails, sides that come with cilantro rice and black beans. Trying the rice was disappointing NO flavor whatsoever. The lobster tails were fishy and rubber like was not my favorite! We also ordered Ceviche came with tortilla chips, I wouldn't call this authentic Mexican food. The margaritas were strong and great here my favorite thing there! My opinion is everything was overpriced for some LOW quality food and I would not go back.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at Coa! Make a reservation, it's definitely a smaller spot than the OG Barbacoa. The service was great, very attentive and accommodating. The vibe is mysterious, romantic, and energetic. Drinks: get the Winne De Pooh cocktail and skip the classic margarita. Okay, the food: the real deal. Your favorite Mexican dishes with a Coa flare! Pumpkin seed crusted lamb, lobster enchiladas, and phenomenal steak. The portions match the price and flavors are worth even more! We will definitely be back for our next date night, anniversary, birthday, you name it!

Yelp
This was the best customer service I have ever had! The portions were massive for the price, and everything was delicious. Drinks were strong and the bartenders recommendations were spot-on. I will be back for sure.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I love all the Coa's. This one just like the rest has its own personality and the ambiance is very romantic. Excellent food is outstanding and the servers are the best. Thank you for making our evening special as you always do.

Yelp
What a fun atmosphere! We were here on business and an agent highly recommended this place. We sat at the bar and it was fun to sit at the bar and watch all the drinks go out. The bartenders were great and interactive. I loved the tree with the skeletons in it and the little tequila bottle. The music was great as well. Now the drinks...amazing. My maradona was on point! I could have just sat and drank those all night!! When I saw the whole fish on the menu I HAD to have it!! I fell in love with whole fried fish in Panama and it did not disappoint. The asparagus was cooked perfectly, not soggy and you can eat the entire stock! HIGHLY RECOMMEND COMING HERE!!

Yelp
This restaurant was clean friendly and very fancy. The food was amazing the huevos rancheros were served on two tostadas and it was the best I've ever had. I will definitely go here again.
