What Three D.C. Chefs With a Sea of Michelin Stars Served Last Night | Eater DC

"I tasted hits from Jorge Hernandez of Minibar by José Andrés as part of the collaborative dinner; Minibar held on to its two-star Michelin rating in the 2019 guide, and José Andrés’ involvement extended beyond the kitchen through his nonprofit World Central Kitchen, which prepared more than 3 million meals for Puerto Rico and is recounted in his book We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time." - Tierney Plumb

The atmosphere at Coa is absolutely stunning! On the day we visited, a Michelin-starred chef was in the kitchen, and it truly felt like a world-class experience. The food was beautifully presented and the flavors were outstanding. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Subject: Exceptional Dining Experience at COA, Dorado Beach – A Ritz-Carlton Reserve Last week, we enjoyed another extraordinary dinner at COA, the award-winning restaurant at Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and were once again reminded why this resort exemplifies true six-star service and world-class cuisine. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted and escorted to our 6:00 PM dinner reservation—undoubtedly the perfect time to enjoy the breathtaking sunset views from our table. The gentle sound of the waves and the natural beauty of the setting created a truly magical ambiance. Our remarkable servers, Joshua Gines and Miguel Meléndez, provided the finest hospitality we have ever experienced. Their attention to detail, impeccable timing, and thoughtful recommendations elevated the entire evening. Together with Dhaysra Reynoso, Gisela Bermúdez, and the exceptionally talented Chef and culinary team, they made our dining experience unforgettable. Joshua and Miguel surprised us with a special selection of appetizers from the chef—an exquisite touch that set the tone for the rest of the evening. We began with a refreshing palate-cleansing sorbet, followed by an elegant variety of soups, salads, and both local cold and hot appetizers, accompanied by fresh artisanal bread. Our Chef’s Signature main courses—including perfectly prepared salmon, halibut, roasted pumpkin, chicken breast, and wagyu tenderloin steak—were complemented by flavorful side dishes and selections from the island’s finest wine assortment. We concluded our meal with an elegant trio of gourmet chocolates. Every element—from the cocktails, cuisine, and wines to the impeccable service and captivating atmosphere—was absolute perfection. We are deeply grateful to the entire Ritz-Carlton Dorado Beach team for creating yet another memorable evening that exceeded every expectation.

Had a lovely dinner here and were doted on by the servers and chef. Top-notch service for sure. Our food and cocktails were perfection. I only wish we would have been able to go earlier. I made a 7pm reservation and it was already dark outside. We dined outside and could hear the waves but just couldn't see them. We'll be back next month anyway! Our server brought out some special surprise appetizers from the chef and I wish I had taken pics!

Very nice restaurant, nice views, very expensive but it is worth it. The food was delicious! Our waiter was super sweet. Definitely worth a try if u are looking for something unique. YOU NEED TO MAKE A RESO!! They will not let u in without one since it is private property it’s a resort.

COA has given me the best dinning experience of my entire life! This has been recommended by several people as a must try. Absolutely everything was perfect! Balanced flavors and textures with an amazing display of artistic expression. Service was attentive, helpful, knowledgeable, and extremely kind. What an amazing experience! No words could adequately express how delighted I was to dine here.

Google
The experience of a lifetime. If you have the money to spend and the time to call ahead for a reservation I would highly recommend. COA is #1 on my list from this point forward. Our server was respectful and responsive. Another server came over the explain each dish that she had brought out to us. From the first walk into the resort you instantly feel like you are exploring the jungle. To the warm greetings from valet and aid from the hosts. To the bread and butter, drinks, and the main dishes this palate was exceptional. With views of the private beach this restaurant was the only one owned by the Ritz- Carlton that was open to the public. If you want to feel like a million bucks I would say this is the go-to restaurant . Obviously it is recommended to dress up accordingly. I would highly recommend this astonishing restaurant to any couple celebrating a special occasion or single parties looking to commemorate their events.

Google
this is hands down my favorite place in puerto rico. everytime i visit, we have to reserve a table. the food, ambiance, and service are of course top notch!! we’ve come many times and will continue to come. i usually get the tomahawk but it wasn’t available during this winter menu so opted for the bone in ribeye which was beyond incredible!! my recommendation is a table around 6p so you can catch the sunset outside! here’s to many more! special thank you to Will [my twin] for the service everytime we visit. not only do we share the same name but he is the best and the one we ask for every single time!

Yelp
Service was great but the food was okay. I feel the menu needs more selection. The steak was also just okay. To be the primary restaurant at a Ritz Carlton, I'd expect more.

Yelp
Such an experience and what a view! We went to COA on our last night in PR and were sooo happy with the results. The food was delicious and the service was phenomenal! We got the taste of COA menu, marinated tofu, butternut cream, roasted pumpkin, broccolini, cauliflower, and the farm salad! They truly make the food into art and we loved every bit of it! They were very accommodating to my vegan boyfriend and I loved all the personal touches to the meal. They gave us a little snack at the beginning that was a truffle sandwich and we got a free dessert for my bf's graduation! Everything was so fresh and so filling. I'd definitely recommend the tasting menu so you can get a bit of everything. Trust me, you will be sooooo full. My dad couldn't even finish the last course (6 oz wagyu flat iron). My favorite part of it was the crudo at the beginning! It was so fresh and simple. I also really enjoyed the coconut desert. I felt like the roast pork raviolio fell a bit flat and was way too rich for me but everything else was nice!

Yelp
Nilda took great care of us this morning for breakfast. We ordered the French toast it was topped with berries it was a 7/10. Also ordered a omelette also was cooked nicely. I enjoyed the ginger & apricot hot tea was very tasty, and aromatic. The view is amazing 10/10 we chose to sit inside since it was a little stormy out.

Yelp
Whoa. I didn't expect a lot from the food in PR at Dorado Beach but I should have. COA checks all the boxes with fabulous food - seafood that is off the chain good, excellent but not intrusive service, and a nice atmosphere. I could not have been happier with dinner here. Started with the butternut squash soup with coconut emulsion that was so good. The bread basket includes 3 types of breads and butters. You will want to eat it all but have to save room. We moved on to the king crab - perfectly cracked and flavorful w/their own house made sauces. It was the best crab I've had outside of Alaska and we live in Seattle where it's plentiful. Next we had the halibut with an amazing crust of hazelnuts and truffles. It may have been even better than the crab, but it was close. The fish came with a taro mash with truffle - and we didn't realize that so we also ordered the potatoes with Burrata and truffle. You can't have enough truffle. Finished with cappuccinos and molten cake. Really excellent experience all around. Don't miss it if you are in the area. I want to go back and try more on the menu. It was that good.

Yelp
Beautiful decor tropical gardens surround your entrance. Beautiful mixture of tropical wood, fabric and soft lighting welcome you to the dining room. Menu is welcoming with many seafood, beef and other selections that will please the most sophisticated pallet. My wife had the beef tenderloin, and I had the Alaskan fish on the chefs menu. Many wines on the extensive wine list, however the least expensive wine by the glass was $29! Martinis are $18 to mid $20's. Dinner for two expect a bill of $300. I would have given this dining venue 5 stars except for the overpriced liquor menus. The service was excellent.

Yelp
Breakfast was GREAT. Standard hotel fare, but not phoned in at all. LOVED the drinks, Benedict, pastry basket (you choose 3) and little touches. Try the powder sugar dusted "Mallorca" - the whole family loved it. Little touches included a homemade piquillo sauce, and divine homemade banana jam one day. The under-advertised, under-the-radar Puerto Rican traditional lunch was great too - lots of options, we split the pork (delicious with pickled onion), dirty rice and yuca mofungo. I think the seafood would have been delicious as well, in the afternoon when the focus is on traditional cuisine, not steak. To that point.... Dinner was alas a miss with MOST of us (explanation to follow). I gave three stars due to breakfast and lunch being 5, and dinner more like...2. Because, well, most of us ordered fish in a steakhouse so to be fair I am not rating the steak which well may be excellent. But we tried two different fish at COA dinner - one was super dry, and the other had ingredients that just didn't come together like truffle pecan crust (no need!). A simple grilled fish with lemon and herb would have been far more satisfying. The wahoo crudo was a little fishy - it's that kind of fish that carries more of a punchy flavor, and was nicely prepared, but be warned that it is not the kind of hamachi that is practically transparent and carries no fish flavor. Here's the kicker - our daughter ordered the steak offering from the kids menu and said it was her best meal of the trip. Soooo.... An enthusiastic YES for the breakfast and PR lunch, a no for a non-steak dinner. Felt fancy tho, which our girls liked! Also had the music going on the weekend, and people seemed to be having fun. I guess moral of the story is... In a steakhouse, have steak :)

Yelp
COA is undeniably one of my top five favorite steak houses. Their steak is incredibly delicious, especially their filet mignon, which never fails to impress. It's the perfect restaurant to culminate my vacation because of its consistent quality and delightful ambiance. The view complements every bite you take, enhancing the dining experience to a whole new level of enjoyment. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in a memorable meal, COA delivers both exceptional food and a breathtaking atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

Yelp
This is the nicest of the Dorado Ritz Reserve restaurants. It has a farm to table theme. The restaurant is beautiful and one of the more formal. Its the only one at the resort where you can't wear shorts or flip flops, however jeans are still allowed, so its still semi-casual. They have indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice if its too humid out. Our waitor was fabulous and very knowledgeable. He made some great recommendations. The menu was a bit limited, like most farm to table style places, but still had a good selection. We were excited for the special, which was a Trio Waygu Steak Tasting. We were able to try 3 different Wagyu steaks, one from Japan and two from Australia. Although it was expensive, we split it between three people and it was more than enough food. It was the most fabulous steak I've ever had. I've never tried Wagyu before, but this was worth every single penny. I'm in trouble now, because I am going to want this anytime it is on the menu. This is what dreams are made of! The experience here was first class. I highly recommend!

Yelp
New all-time favorite brunch restaurant! Coa offers the most bright and relaxed environment with outdoor and under-roof seating with a beautiful view overlooking the blue ocean. The servers were terrific and even accommodated our seating after my dad got hot under the sun. My family and I ate from their Mother's Day Brunch, and it was the best breakfast I have ever had. They set out a menu for us and their incredible Buffett offering; eggs your style, handmade sushi, mini pastries, crepe making station, a salad bar, and an entire set for mini gourmet desserts. I ate many minis from the buffet and ordered the Organic Açaí Bowl, made fresh from the kitchen. All the food was delicious; I couldn't stop eating!! My family ordered the Quiche and Eggs Benedict, which were also very tasty. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely mouthwatering breakfast/brunch.

Yelp
Peter & Nestor were exceptional. Service, food & ambiance was immaculate. My boyfriend & I stayed at the Ritz over a five day period of time (August 4th-9th, 2023) & we loved every moment of it celebrating my birthday (August 16th)! Our servers were perfect, they made us feel welcome and everything about COA gave luxury. Thank you for your great service & our two servers. They deserve a promotion for their over the top hospitality. Thank you.

Yelp
I am so happy COA is back up and running again!!! From what the servers were telling me, they closed the restaurant down until 2 nights ago. We ended up getting reservations on their opening night, and we are so glad we did. They made some changes to the menu, and they also added Gary (the sommelier) which added to an already unforgettable experience. Even though it was their first night open with the potential for so much to go wrong, the service was excellent, food was fantastic, and they ran as if they had been open for decades. Their attention to detail was astounding. Plus, the view is incredible...opt for an outdoor table if you are up for it. As far as the food, we ordered the tartare for an appetizer, A5 Wagyu New York strip and Hawaiian ahi tuna for our meals, and a chocolate coconut dish for dessert. Gary came over after we decided what we were going to eat and recommended the most perfect wine to pair with our meal. With each sip, the meal was elevated as the wine complemented the Wagyu perfectly. If you eat here, ask for Gary! You can tell that he loves what he does and has a true passion for wine and people pleasing. He checked on us multiple times throughout our meal and gave us fun facts about wine! He was truly a delight! As far as the food...we do not have one complaint. We started our meal with an amuse bouche, which was a potato foam with vinegar. I know that sounds strange, but if I could eat a whole bowl of this, I would! The vinegar added a salty and tangy edge to the potato flavoring, which was truly a delight. The beef tenderloin tartare was perfect. All of the flavors blended beautifully and had a little bit of a pleasant spicy kick to it. I love beef tartare, but this may have been the best one we have ever tried. The ahi tuna was beautifully done. It was extremely fresh and came with the most splendid sauce--almost like a light buttery lemon sauce. This is a meal we would definitely order again. Now, as for the A5 Wagyu...this was on a whole different level. A true league of its own. We had never tried A5 Wagyu before, so we did not really know what to expect but we were totally blown away. If you are on the fence--definitely get this. Worth every cent. It was cooked perfectly (compliments to the chef) and it was truly an unbelievable experience. Each bite kept getting better, especially with the wine enhancing the flavors of the beef. For dessert, we tried a chocolate coconut dish. We are unsure of the official name, once we took a bite of it, we pretty much forgot our names. It was the perfect sweet treat to top off an amazing meal. No matter how full you are, don't skimp on the dessert! If I could give one piece of advice--go "all out" at COA and have no limitations for a truly memorable experience. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

Yelp
Perfect food! This place would have a Michelin star if it was in a city on the mainland! Great work chef and team! Starting with the greeting and the beautiful table in the elegant dining room. Our wait staff was on top of everything. Drinks were fantastic and came right out with hast. We had the tenderloin tartare, charred corn, potato gratin, and the duck. All of which were amazing. Perfect cook. Well balanced flavors. But the highlight for me was the Queen snapper! Wow! Perfectly cooked. Moist and crispy skin. A home run! Didn't get steak but saw some on other tables and it looked amazing. For dessert the s'mores!! Wow!! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
First some advice: allow extra time to find the Ritz and then locate the restaurant once you arrive. That was hugely challenging for us and caused us to be 30 minutes late. This is a big complex with few signs. The restaurant is elegant, food is very good, and service is excellent. Prices were steep but we found prices in Puerto Rican restaurants to be well above U. S. prices.

Yelp
I am giving this place 2 stars because of the ambiance, which was lovely. The watermelon salad was mushy, and gross. The "a5 japanese wagyu" was all wrong.. seasoned with a misquote flavor and served room temp. When i complained to the waitress about the steak, she said it was the way the chef prepares it and next time we should ask for it to be prepared w/o the smokey flavor.

Yelp
Want so bad for this place to return to its original levels of quality! Three meals here in the last three months and everyone of them terrible. Nothing is ever consistent with Coa other than how poor the attention to detail is from management. Really hate saying things that are negative but really cant find anything nice to say other than the silverware is very nice and the craft cocktails from the bar are always solid!!

Ralph K.

Yelp
Excellent. First thing was the front desk ladies very polite and very understanding. Out table server Reinaldo was excellent and excellent in wine recommendations. Food we ordered was the Australian wagyu and 5/5. T Bone 5/5. Scallops 5/5 and pork belly with Brussels sprout marvelous. Experience 5/5. I would recommend.

Pedro B.

Yelp
Great cocktails, awesome service at the bar, had the S'mores desert which was really good, but the Wagyu burger was mediocre at best. If you're going to charge $60 for a burger, meat, bun and the rest of ingredients have to be on point. Ordered burger medium and got it close to well done, portion was definitely less than 8 ounces, bun was probably store bought Pepin and no caviar or truffle flavor on sight, just an overpowering flavor of liquid smoke... really disappointed. Should of known better and ordered a steak. At least the fries that came with the burger were good lol.

S G.

Yelp
Most delicious restaurant at the Ritz Carlton Dorado beach! Very high quality meat and flavorful dishes. The service was exceptional. Rachel and Jordyn provided exceptional service during our meals there. Both of them truly went above and beyond. We will definitely be back!!!
