It's been a hot minute since I visited COA. In fact, the last time I was there they were still in their old location up on the hill. They're now closer to town, on Riverside near College Way.
The restaurant is larger, and the decor is on point. Walking inside to enjoy some lunch on a lazy weekend, my daughter and I loved their festive decor and light, bright atmosphere. We were seated quickly, and our server arrived to bring us some drinks. I ordered a negra modelo because, well, Saturday.
Everything on the menu sounded good, but the molcajete was calling our name. At $39 for two people, it even felt like a good deal (though maybe a bit extravagant for lunch). It soon arrived in the signature "volcanic rock" bowl that this dish is known for. The contents, a rich stew made of different kinds of meat, was still bubbling it was so hot. The top was adorned with strips of grilled cactus and some seriously jumbo shrimp. It also came with fresh tortillas and a plate of beans, rice, and all the fixins.
This was so delicious! My only regret was there was no possible way we could finish it. Luckily, they had takeout containers at the ready, so it made a good breakfast the next day. This would definitely feed at least 3 people. Maybe even 4!
I'm glad COA is back on my radar, and I look forward to returning soon.
