Popular Deep Ellum Restaurant Ebb & Flow Will Open in Plano | Eater Dallas

"Previously a pizzeria, Coal Vines occupied the roughly 3,000-square-foot space and sprawling outdoor patio that Ebb and Flow will be taking over." - Amy McCarthy

Hands down the best Pizza in town. The fried calamari was yum. Zucchini chips are addicting. The cheese ravioli with pesto sauce was extremely satisfying! We love how they make all of their sauces in house too. Harrison provided great service and the atmosphere was also really pleasant. Will absolutely be back because I will be thinking of that pesto sauce until then.

We feel special when we go to Coal Vines Southlake. The owner, Darren, always greets us and gives us the latest scoop on the new wines and ingredients he’s using to enhance our dining experience. He spends quality time with all the patrons and it’s the most genuine and professional behavior we’ve seen in a long time. J.C. our bartender, is an absolute genius with his smoked old fashioned and affogato mixes. J.C. always has a great smile and works hard to make us smile from his delicious creations!! Smiles are contagious in this place. We highly recommend anything he serves. Jennifer our server, takes great care of us and knows what we want before we do. She’s friendly, efficient and incredibly attentive. We love interacting with everyone at Coal Vines!!!! The food is high quality with more than fair price points. Generous servings and the beautifully plated food is impressive. The drinks are expertly curated and crafted. Check out the pics of the food and drinks. I’m writing this review because it makes us happy to let everyone know how wonderful everything and everyone at Coal Vines is. Run, don’t walk!!!!

Google
An amazing Italian hideout, the food is fantastic and high quality. The Meatballs are 💯 meat, perfect keto. I asked for the vodka/habanero sauce which is house made and flavorful. Starting with zucchini chips is amazing!

Had Coal Vines earlier today for the first time in 3 years and my goodness, It's as good as I remember. Their pizza tastes amazing. You can taste all of the quality ingredients. Plus!!! The service was PERFECT. Emily (I'm sorry if I spelt that wrong) was AMAZING. Her hospitality was top notch and she answered every question we had. And finally, the atmosphere. UGH I JUST LOVE IT. It has the perfect low mood lighting, and music. It really makes you feel like you're in a secret pizza spot in New York, I just LOVE IT. Overall, I'm giving Coal Vines an ♾️/10. It's too good to put on a scale. We WILL be coming back. THANK YOU COAL VINES!!!

Michele

Google
Fun neighborhood gem. Very quiet and a great wine list to choose from. The small salad is big enough to share. We didn't see any bears, lol.

Google
Harrison was great and even recommended some extra spicy toppings for my pizza. The pizza is great and there are great options on the menu.

Google
THE best pizza EVER!! This place is worth a drive for a date night. Independently owned and operated, great care goes into every detail, and it shows. While we were there, we met several regulars who say they visit frequently. If you like pizza, Coal Vines is a must-visit!

Google
We recently dined at Coal Vines with good friends and everyone loved it ! The atmosphere was relaxing and felt up scale without being stuffy. The owner, Darren made us feel welcome and greeted so many tables. They have a great wine list and the fried Zucchini chips they bring to the table are addicting ! Between us we ordered the mixed green salad, jumbo meatballs and a variety of pizzas. Some of our favorites were the pear and Gorgonzola and the drunken meat lovers pizza. We topped off our meal with beautiful Affogatos. We highly recommend this little gem and can’t wait to go back.

Yelp
Perfect for our monthly book club! Everything is fresh, delicious & The best wait staff hands down!

Yelp
This place has one of the best pizzas I've eaten! Staff here is consistent which speaks of the management IMO. When you arrive you get get complementary zucchini chips upon being seated. Daily HH(even Saturdays) before 7 is 1/2 off wine by the glass and some specials on cocktails and even a 12.00 pizza! The salads are all delish and come im 1/2 or full size and are generous portions and fresh ingredients. I love the pizza and salad that we get that I end up getting it every time all the other food looks and smells good, but I just can't bring myself to get anything else !! I love the decor. It's like an old style rat pack error bar. There is outside patio seating that is heated in the winter as well. Add it to the Love List

Yelp
We ordered the pizza and shrimp scampi from the specials board. The pizza was good but the worst shrimp scampi ever served in a restaurant. Shrimp was overcooked and tough, no sauce to speak of on the pasta, really bland, bread was awful with no sauce to dip into. For all that, was overpriced. They took off $6 for the scampi so we paid over $20 for dry pasta. No desire to eat anything other than pizza here.

Yelp
After my last updated review, the new owner emailed me basically saying they had had some hiccups with the music, but it was fixed and is back to the same Frank Sinatra vibe as before. So my husband and I returned a few weeks ago. I'm super excited to say that the music and atmosphere was great, and the food was great as well! We ordered calamari, and a half goat cheese/half caprese pizza. Delicious. I didn't see the owner or definitely would have thanked him. It is back to being one of my favorite restaurants!

Yelp
What a great experience they have a wonderful happy hour. The service was very good. The food was very nice. Also, we got a pizza and garlic bread olive, which was pretty damn good.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Pizzas were very good and creative. Service was excellent. Great value for a more upscale pizza.

Scott B.

Yelp
Always good food, especially the pasta and meatballs. Nice wine selection. Our only disappointment is we always seem to want to go on days they are not open.

Yelp
Went to Coal Vines with my family for dinner. Plenty of choices for pizza as well as pastas. My wife and I split a large Gerry's Pie and my son and daughter in law each had a small - one Buffalo Chicken and one Mediterranean. We also split the Goat Cheese Marina to start. The Goat Cheese Marina, though extremely simple and exactly what you would expect it to be, was very very good. Nice simple Italian food with bold flavor. It should have come with more bread though. As for the pizzas, they were all perfectly good but certainly not outstanding. At these prices, $23 for a small Mediterranean for example, I really wanted this to be outstanding. Truth is, I found it not much better than the big delivery chains that we all know the names of. Service was good as expected. Overall conclusion is that I will go back if someone else requests we go there, but it is not a restaurant I would choose myself. Other pizza in that area is more to my taste.

Yelp
We absolutely LOVE Coal Vines. Cozy ambiance, outstanding service and delicious pizza, and the WINE selection is amazing! Such a fun date night spot! We love it! :)

Yelp
I'm here for the hearty marina!! It really stands out with the cheese bread and meatballs. I can tell the team members appreciate the customers. I have not gotten the vibes that I am a bother to the with my requests. This type of service is noticeable and goes a long way with me.

Yelp
Triple pepperoni with the spicy sauce. Do it! Great place. Excellent service. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We've been dining at Coal Vines for over a decade. They continue to be a romantic date spot with the best pizza we've ever had, that includes their gluten free pizza and their cauliflower crust pizzas. My husband loves their meatballs; they're tender and full of flavor. They get busy on the weekends, so come early!
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
My husband and I were running errands in the area, and we decided to try Coal Vines for an early Saturday dinner. We were so glad that we did! This is a cozy Italian eatery with a vintage charm. The service was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious! Our server was kind, attentive, and offered several suggestions. My husband said the pizza crust was one of the best he's ever tasted. Note: Keep your eyes open when looking for the restaurant, as it's a little tucked away between retail storefronts. But it has plenty of easy parking available!

Rose L.

Yelp
We went there for Saturday brunch on my sister's birthday, the pizza dough sticks platter is amazing, and the staff were super friendly. Our favorite place to go in Southlake.
google avatar

Airianna S.

Yelp
I placed an order over the phone with staff, and my husband went to pick it up. There was miscommunication, and he left unhappy and dissatisfied. This was disappointing, because we loved the pizza here when we ordered online. BUT!!!! This place gets 1000+ stars. Unfortunately I can only put 5. The owner, Eric, took it upon himself to make it right! He didn't have to, but he went ABOVE and BEYOND. We spoke over the phone about what happened. He brought us our pizza himself, and apologized abut everything multiple times. We are looking forward to ordering more pizzas in the future from here. It really is amazing! We are very grateful for the extra effort put into making sure we got our order. Thank you to Eric!

J P.

Yelp
We generally really like Coal Vines in Southlake. A good small neighborhood fell to the joint, although the tables are sometimes a bit too close together. They've expanded seating a bit in an enclosed "three-season" porch, but it tends to get pretty cold out there in the winter, so I'd hold out for an inside table. They favor Sinatra and Rat Pack era music in the background which sort of fits the vibe. They've tried live music, but honestly, the pale is just too small for this to work unless its totally acoustic. Pizza is the draw, although there is a reasonable selection of pastas and other Italian fare. They also have specials on bottles of wine during the week. Our only complaint is that this Coal Vines is closed on Sundays. I don't think that's a requirement of the retail center they're in, because other restaurants there do operate on Sundays. Perhaps it's a religious choice, but if not and if they need to close 1 day a week, I'd recommend closing on Mondays.

Yelp
I have been a regular at Coal Vines for more than 10 years. I found out like year 8 you can ask for less spicy sauce on the spicy meatball pizza lol. I love the spice but sometimes it's a smig too hot. That being said I have always finished the pizza and ordered it again and again lol. When you first arrive they send out fried zucchini chips while you wait which are awesome. We always get a cheese pizza for our son and it's so big he might be able to eat a max of two slices. We grab the spicy meatball pizza. I have tried risotto which is delicious but those meatballs have my heart. The atmosphere is dark kind of jazz bar feel. It's usually pretty full but the staff is always checking on you and making sure your drinks are full. The wine menu is really good and I like to try a different red each time I am in. The pizza crust has a delicious crust with a perfect chew. You cannot go wrong by stopping in for dinner or grabbing take out.

Yelp
Coal Vines has excellent pizza and salads. That's as far as I make it down the menu, it's hard to vary when the pizza is so good. The crust flavor is a great foundation for whatever you want on top of it. We've had good service regularly although things can back up on a weekend evening if lots of takeout orders come in. Full bar is available as well. Average prices and above average food.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
We absolutely love coal Vines! Order the Caprese and add meatballs! Their Cesar salad is so divine! We love everything here. It has a NYC ambiance and amazing service too!

Gary G.

Yelp
We are regulars. Margherita pizza is solid. I think a new owner took over recently. Last two visits we asked for the Greek salad dressing in the side but the salad came already dressed. Tried the sampler appetizer that was tasteless except for the meatballs. Calamari was dry and was not fried to order. Service slow at the table. We typically sit at the bar where service is fast. Lastly, their website says HH 4-7; last two visits we arrived at 6:00 and we are told there is no happy hour ?? Very odd. I hope things improve.

Yelp
I went with nine friends for dinner at Coal Vines on a Thursday evening. One of my tests for an Italian-themed restaurant is to order spaghetti. Not only is it my favorite dish, but it's a good test of how well a restaurant can prepare such a simple dish. Their menu offers "Build Your Own Pasta" with your choice of pasta, sauce, and protein. And since they offer "spaghetti & meatball" on the kids menu, I asked our server if I could order the normal spaghetti noodle versus the options posted and he said, "absolutely!" So, I ordered spaghetti ($7), meat sauce ($2.50), and Italian sausage ($5). The dish, when it came, was Angel Hair pasta with a meat sauce, but I couldn't find any trace of the $5 Italian sausage. When I brought up the issue with our server, he said they didn't have any spaghetti noodles, and that there was sausage in the dish, it was just ground up. If I'd known there wasn't any spaghetti noodles I would have ordered something else, or at least a different pasta. Angel Hair to me is my least favorite pasta! There's no texture to the noodle and it almost turns to mush and gets lost in the sauce. And $5 for ground up sausage just doesn't cut it. For $5 I expected either Italian sausage links, or at least slices/chunks of the sausage. Maybe I should have confirmed what type of sausage I'd receive, but live and learn. But, just letting me know that the pasta I ordered was unavailable would have solved the majority of the problem. As it was, If I'd ordered another dish it would have taken time and I'd probably have received it when the rest of the guys were finished. So I kept the dish and picked at it. The server took the dish off of my bill, and I did appreciate that. The restaurant looks nice and the atmosphere is conducive to families. The bar looks very well stocked. I had wine with my dish and it was good.

Steve H.

Yelp
Yummy. Lived around here for 5 years and didn't even know they were here/there. Awesome food. server (JC) was great. Cool ambiance. Er...I mean...horrible ... y'all stay away. Go somewhere else. Fresh ingredients are wayyy over-rated. And way too serene, you might actually have to talk to your spouse and kids. And they serve alcohol ... the horror!!

Lori C.

Yelp
My husband and I only order pizza to take home from Coal Vines in Southlake, TX. I can only speak to the pizza, not service, atmosphere or anything else. The pizza is very good if you like fire oven crust!
google avatar

Jeannie G.

Yelp
First time dining in. Had the spicey meatball pizza which was really good. The calamari was too chewy (over-cooked?) The restaurant is very cozy and has a nice bar. Service was good and friendly.
google avatar

Ricardo J.

Yelp
I have been coming here for some years - wanting to be a regular - but their pizza is so good, me and my waistline are scared to be here too often. The service from owner Eric and Curtis at the bar are as good as it gets. Despite how busy they are - they take the time to interact with customers and make friends. The Happy Hour offers some really good deals - especially on draft beers and wines by the glass. The pizza is the best around - cooked to perfection and perfectly topped every time. This place makes you feel at home - and you never, ever leave hungry.

Yelp
Ordered takeout...pizza, ravioli and chicken picatta. Probably the best Italian in the area that serves pizza. Will be back.

Tom D.

Yelp
This single star is for Andre. I have no idea if the food or service is decent but judging from the interaction with Andre when trying to make a reservation, the experience will be absolutely terrible. According to Andre they do not take reservations despite the reservation number on their website. Nice job Andre... Update: Just to be clear, this rating is for Andre and his attitude, not the fact that you don't take reservations, I get that. Your website does still state that you take them, however. I called at 4:30, not the busy rush, he was short, rude, etc. Possibly a bad day for him but based on the reviews, there are others with similar issues. I get help is hard to find these days so maybe just keep him away from the customers, or potential customers.

Jam K.

Yelp
Been here in SL 10 years and we have been ordering gf pizza for our daughter here for years, but I kid you not, the past three times I have come to pick up the order they haven't had it in the system. I have had to pull up my recent calls on my cell phone and show them the number of minutes I was on the phone placing the order. This time the same woman who took the order was the one who said she remembers putting it into the system and pick up time as well but she couldn't find it. I have wasted 45 minutes waiting on them to put in the order after I get there and today I waited 50 minutes. This is ridiculous. If you as a business are too strapped, or too short staffed to be able to handle to go/pick up orders along with your in dining, then you shouldn't offer it! There is NO excuse for this happening three times to a customer. I've been understanding, patient and last time I even spoke with the manager to make them aware of my experience. I didn't run to tell or Google and write a negative review, no, I gave them an opportunity to correct the situation from happening to others and to me again, but this was too much. Seriously, $28 for a small margarita pizza, is waaay too much to charge to make a customer wait for 50 minutes ans not have your game at 100%. The owner needs to do something and make some serious changes to ensure a much better customer experience. We will Not be returning ever again to coal vines. There are way too many great options in and around SL to be dealing with this nonsense!

Yelp
Small location with good and friendly staff. It's very clean and relatively fast as well. The pizza is very very good.

Yelp
When I used to live in Kansas City, Coal Vines was the go to spot for pizza. I've always enjoyed their pizza. They use the freshest ingredients! We always get the Spicy Meatball here. It's my favorite. The meatballs are huge, made fresh, and have a nice spicy kick to it. The sauce is not overpowering at all. The perfect amount of tang in my opinion. I love the pizza dough here. It's a nice mix between crispy and doughy! We did a half order of the Hawaiian style and it was just OK. Stick with the Spicy Meatball, you will not be disappointed. I've had pizza in New York City and this place reminds me of Bleecker Street Pizza. NY has the BEST pizza, so you know that says a lot. I highly recommend giving this place a try. The staff here are awesome and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Don't forget to check-in on Yelp to get a free order of cheesy bread!
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
We always get great service at this place. Hit it on the day and they have great deals on pizza or wine. The red sauce is so good. Pizza is think and the crust is tasty and cooked to perfection. The interior is comforting but can get kind of loud.

Todd G.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Place is clean and friendly with very pleasant staff that were helpful

Lenny C.

Yelp
The Dallas location was one of our favorite pizzas in DFW. We were heartbroken when they closed their doors but we are so happy they have a Southlake location!
google avatar

Don J.

Yelp
With a cozy dining room and patio seating, Coal Vines is a pleasant place to have dinner and a glass of wine. Make sure to check in for the free cheese bread appetizer, piping hot and covered with a generous layer of melted, oven-browned cheese. The large salads are the perfect size for sharing - ask for it to be served on two plates. We've had mixed experiences with the pizza. On our latest visit, the savory toppings on the meat lover's pizza were excellent. Unfortunately the crust was a soggy layer of undercooked dough - a big letdown for wood-fired pizza. The service was a bit distracted. Our server talked us into a bottle of red blend wine, only to come back a few minutes later to tell us it was out of stock. He disappeared for long intervals, and refilled water and iced tea only on request. When we got the check, we had been charged for our Yelp check-in appetizer.

Luma R.

Yelp
I go here often for the nightly specials, Monday's with the family for pizza and Thursdays with my friends for the wine! The manager always comes by to check everything was good for the evening.

Michael W.

Yelp
The pizza and pasta were very good. The kids chicken tenders were thin and dry. The building could definitely use an update. Wobbly tables and chairs with loose cushions were a struggle for our large group. The service was fine.

Eva S.

Yelp
So the pizza is amazing. Hands down the best pizza in Southlake and probably DFW area. Biggest issue is the service and the speed. We dined yesterday and it took over an hour and 15 min to get 2 pizzas. Suffice to say, was ready to get them to go and will do takeout next time. Saw lots and lots of takeout pizzas go out, but not many getting delivered into the actual tables at the restaurant.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Delicious food!! Zucchini chips are great. The sampler appetizer plate was great. My penne pasta with vodka sauce was FANTASTIC. The best vodka sauce I think I've ever had! Would definitely go back!
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Pizza is excellent. At least the meat lovers. Sauce was very good and not too much. Plenty of toppings and cheese. Others in my group ordered the Chicken Marsala which they enjoyed very much. Our timing getting there was perfect, a little after 6 on a Friday. One bigger table for us, and one two seat table was open. Sat immediately, then others started coming and had a short wait. Brenda was our server and she was excellent. This is definitely a go to place for Italian in Southlake.
google avatar

Jo F.

Yelp
Glad we stopped in for pizza. We were seated immediately and served their free fried zucchini. I'd say it was ok- I think if it were fresh out of the fryer it would be fantastic but you can tell they precook it. My suggestion would be to keep it hot. Being elite we checked in to take advantage of the free offer of garlic bread- I'd say it was ok but at $8 I would skip it next time. Moved onto large Greek salad- again it was only ok- it was missing key ingredients that make a Greek salad taste outstanding. So next time I'll order a different salad and order a small because the small portion size looks similar in size to the large. Next we had a large split ingredient pizza- half bbq and half spicy meatball. Pizza was excellent! Although the spicy meatball is freaking hot so take note. We will definitely come back as they are offering a to-go wine special with some great wholesale pricing. Service was great do give them a try.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
How did I not know this place existed? Their pizza is SO GOOD! We ordered an 18" large Meat Lovers Pie for 2 people. It was plenty of food, and we got to take 2 slices home. The crust was amazing, and there was so much flavor! They have an extensive wine menu with affordable options if you want an entire bottle. I will be back!

Eve S.

Yelp
Terrible service, rude manager and manipulative/rude owner. No water glasses available, no wine glasses available, a lot of food that we wanted to order - unavailable: We waited almost 30 minutes to order then received a lot of the incorrect food. Manager had the audacity to tell one of the people in our party to "be quiet" while she was expressing her concern and disappointment. Owner offered to comp food then only comped the Pizza. Furthermore he proceeded to let us know that he will no longer be in business come February 2024 as he had multiple people coming after him for money etc. then he let us know that he would have to tell his poor children that he was losing his restaurant. Well, maybe he should've managed it better, and over the years is been more professional and more business savvy?! Totally unprofessional and unacceptable to talk with customers about this. What were we supposed to do, feel bad for him after how we were treated?! We will never return to this location and will make sure to let everyone we know about this experience. My sister posted on yelp and he twisted his reply to make her feel emotionally embarrassed about her comments! Furthermore he removed my honest review on FB and then blocked me! Unprofessional to a T - once again! Eric (Owner) you need to get it together and man up to the fact that this situation did not manifest itself....

Pat J.

Yelp
Ordered takeout on my way home from work. Small white pizza and small Greek salad. The cost was 45dollars. The salad was in a small container with a large dressing in the middle. By the time I got home the salad was all over the bag.I had high hopes for the pizza but it was awful, The crust seemed wet and limp and the toppings slid right off when attempting to eat it.I've had issues here before but thought I'd give them another chance. Never again, what a waste of money.

Yelp
I must say I wasn't impressed with this restaurant at all. Decided to go here based on their Yelp ratings. The restaurant was busy on a Friday evening, I waited approximately 30 minutes to be seated. Once seated it took a while for the waiter to come by and get our drink order. Not sure if Covid is to be blamed but they were understaffed and it showed. I ordered the appetizer platter and it was very salty especially the calamari. The cheese stick barely had any seasoning on it. The Bruschetta was descent. While I waited 45 minutes for our appetizer, noticed several pizza takeout orders. After 50 minutes received our appetizer and about another 10 minutes got our large pizza. The pizza is probably what they are known for. It was good but still wouldn't coming back just for the pizza.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming to Coal Vines for years now. We usually do a Friday night pizza night. We stopped in last Friday for some pizza and wine. I must say that the pizza was still exceptional. Unfortunately; - the service was slow due to not enough waitstaff - the tables were disgustingly sticky because of the cleaner they're using - we were given plastic plates and plastic cups to eat off of. Of course this didn't make sense because we were also given ceramic bowls, silverware, and glass stemware. Hey Coal Vines, you're better than this.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
We went in with high hopes for this pizza and were disappointed. The crust was not crispy and the toppings were spare. The decorating was nice but that won't bring us back.

Bracy H.

Yelp
Had the build your own pasta, penne with vodka sauce and Italian sausage. I asked them to make it spicy with some habanero sauce and it hit the nail on the head for what I was wanting so creamy and delish on its own but the bread with it topped it all off
google avatar

Sonal P.

Yelp
I've enjoyed coal vines since they came to Southlake. The salads are fresh, the pizza is amazing, the eggplant dish is great twist to eggplant parm. We also like the desserts and the wine selection is the best in the area.

April S.

Yelp
My husband and I went at 6 pm on a Friday. We were pleasantly surprised that it was not super busy and we not have to wait for a table. We were sat in the patio area and we were grateful they had the wind shades zipped down as it was pretty windy. We ordered a glass of Reisling and a glass of Merlot. Our waitress brought our wine back accompanied by fried zucchini chips. They are super good but a little greasy. We ordered a small Caprese as it is our go to pizza everyone we dine here. It's fresh mozzarella, fresh red tomatoes, basil and balsamic glaze. When they bring your pizza you get a tri-bowl of parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes and dried basil. The service here is always on point. We were happy to see our glasses of wine were both discounted by $2.00 as we must have arrived during happy hour. Great place and a must try. Our tab was less then $40.
