I went with nine friends for dinner at Coal Vines on a Thursday evening. One of my tests for an Italian-themed restaurant is to order spaghetti. Not only is it my favorite dish, but it's a good test of how well a restaurant can prepare such a simple dish. Their menu offers "Build Your Own Pasta" with your choice of pasta, sauce, and protein. And since they offer "spaghetti & meatball" on the kids menu, I asked our server if I could order the normal spaghetti noodle versus the options posted and he said, "absolutely!" So, I ordered spaghetti ($7), meat sauce ($2.50), and Italian sausage ($5). The dish, when it came, was Angel Hair pasta with a meat sauce, but I couldn't find any trace of the $5 Italian sausage. When I brought up the issue with our server, he said they didn't have any spaghetti noodles, and that there was sausage in the dish, it was just ground up. If I'd known there wasn't any spaghetti noodles I would have ordered something else, or at least a different pasta. Angel Hair to me is my least favorite pasta! There's no texture to the noodle and it almost turns to mush and gets lost in the sauce. And $5 for ground up sausage just doesn't cut it. For $5 I expected either Italian sausage links, or at least slices/chunks of the sausage. Maybe I should have confirmed what type of sausage I'd receive, but live and learn. But, just letting me know that the pasta I ordered was unavailable would have solved the majority of the problem. As it was, If I'd ordered another dish it would have taken time and I'd probably have received it when the rest of the guys were finished. So I kept the dish and picked at it. The server took the dish off of my bill, and I did appreciate that. The restaurant looks nice and the atmosphere is conducive to families. The bar looks very well stocked. I had wine with my dish and it was good.
