Coast by east – Hamburg - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"A great location on the Marco Polo Terraces in the HafenCity – the terrace affords a wonderful view of the Elbphilharmonie! The concept behind the food is also a winner: sushi and sashimi prepared in the open sushi kitchen. You will also find a few international dishes on the menu. Head downstairs for Enoteca and Italian cuisine." - Michelin Inspector

Google
If you’re searching for a dining experience that feels like a breath of sea air mixed with urban sophistication — look no further than Coast by East. This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a sensory journey along the coastline, reimagined with modern flair and soulful precision. From the moment you walk in, you’re enveloped in effortless elegance: soft linen drapes, sun-bleached woods, ocean-toned ceramics, and the gentle hum of chilled cocktails being crafted at the bar. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the city skyline like a living painting — perfect for sunset drinks or romantic evening meals. The vibe? Calm luxury. Effortless cool. Like a seaside villa designed by a Scandinavian minimalist who fell in love with Japanese restraint. But let’s talk about the food — because Coast by East doesn’t just serve dinner… it serves memories. The seafood here is nothing short of extraordinary. Their crispy-skinned seabass was cooked to perfection — golden, flaky, resting on a bed of saffron-infused fennel and citrus beurre blanc that sang with brightness. The grilled octopus, tender as silk and charred just enough, came with smoked paprika purée and pickled shallots that danced on the palate. Even their simple oyster platter — served with mignonette and finger lime — felt like tasting the North Sea itself. And then there’s the sushi. Yes — sushi. At a coastal-inspired spot, you’d expect it, but not this good. Their tuna tartare with yuzu kosho and avocado cream was pure poetry. The uni (sea urchin) nigiri? Silky, briny, sweet — the kind of bite that makes you pause mid-chew and whisper “wow.” They even have a seasonal sashimi board that changes daily, showcasing fish so fresh it looks like it just swam off the boat. The cocktails? Artisanal masterpieces. Service is impeccable without being stiff. Staff move with quiet grace, anticipate needs before they arise, and clearly adore what they do. Our server spent time explaining each dish’s inspiration — not because we asked, but because they wanted us to feel the story behind every bite. Coast by East isn’t trying to be the biggest, loudest, or trendiest place in town. It’s simply the best version of itself — refined, authentic, and deeply satisfying. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, treating yourself after a long week, or just craving food that makes your soul sigh — this is where you belong. I’ve already booked my next table. Five stars? I’d give it infinity. 🌊🐟🍋

Absolutely amazing food with a fantastic selection, top-notch service, and a beautiful ambiance. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the location couldn’t be better. This place is a must-visit for sushi lovers and fans of Asian fusion cuisine. I highly recommend it and will definitely return every time I’m in Hamburg. A solid 10 out of 10!

I came by quite late in the evening just looking for a drink, and was still warmly welcomed. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was excellent. Special thanks to Kien for the outstanding hospitality – professional, attentive, and genuinely kind. Highly recommended!

I don't understand the negative ratings this restaurant is receiving. Everything was perfect -- food, service, location. Would definitely want to come back here.

Friday afternoon/ evening reservation for a family group of 6 adults, two 2yos, one 1yo and two dogs. Super atmosphere thanks to amazing staff. Other guests were kind and seemed happy. Any additional request was handled really well. Food was absolutely delicious. And price was adequate given the quality and taste. Will come again and will recommend. 5/5 stars. Keep it up coast by east! 🫶🏽

Google
Large outdoor area seating with a nice view. Food is unquestionably good, however service concept is not supporting. For example; you shouldn't be asking soya souce additionally if you already ordered sushi & tempura. Sake is served untraditionally in wine glasses.

We have been living in Hamburg for long time, and this place has been our list to visit. And we finally visited Coast by East Hamburg for a special occasion. The high ceiling, green ambience, great view through glass walls, etc. made the good initial impression. Waiter was helpful and patient. And the food tasted good. Not the best sushi/roll that I ever tasted, but beautiful presentation, good taste, and good portion were worth the money.

Yelp
Want a great lunch spot that overlooks the Elbe? Then coast by East will be your spot! The views offered at this restaurant are fantastic, letting you gaze out at the new skyline of Hamburg. The last time I was in Hafen City was 2018, so returning to this new skyline was amazing. Service was excellent and friendly and all staff are proficient with English. In terms of the food, we ordered the Chef's omakase sushi. Overall it was good, not out of this world, but good. There's a lot of creativity with the sushi there.

Yelp
This restaurant was perfect for celebrating my husband and my 1 year wedding anniversary in Hamburg! The atmosphere was very romantic (we went when it was dark but getting there to see sunset and then having the restaurant be dark would be perfect) and gorgeous. The waitress was attentive and friendly. The food was EXCELLENT! We loved the chef's sushi and our entrees which were the waygu and chicken katsu - would highly recommend if you want to have a fancy dinner and celebrate something :) Auf deutsch ich werde nur sagen - SEHR LECKER! Und ein sehr schönes Restaurant.

Yelp
We literally stumbled into this place because our first two attempts for dinner were failed attempts (first one took reservations 6-8 weeks out- WHAT and the other was closed for a private party) but my husband and I are both glad it happened because this meal ended up being perfect. It was packed on a Saturday night so we had to sit at one of their bar areas to drink and eat, which was completely fine. While we were waiting to order, our waitress brought our crackers served with banana curry sauce. That was some of the best curry sauce I've ever tasted and wished we could have taken some home. We got the miso eggplant bites as an appetizer and were surprised (in a good way) at how big the serving size was. These were full of flavor and we both would gladly order again. My husband got the crispy chicken and I got the lamb curry and we both LOVED our dishes. My lamb was perfectly done, had a kick and the rice and yogurt sauce served with it were wonderful. My husband's chicken was honestly some of the best chicken either of us had ever tasted (we tried hard remembering when/where we've had better and couldn't come up with anything). This is a nice place for a date night and is definitely on the high end (price-wise) but the views on the water and the beautiful inside with great service makes it worth the price. Would highly recommend checking this place out.

Yelp
I had dinner here with a couple of colleagues on my last night in Hamburg. I had mentioned how much I love sushi and one of my coworkers very thoughtfully brought me over to Coast. We made the mistake of not making reservations (necessary even on a Tuesday night!) and were basically told we could sit at the bar if we were interested in eating there. Sadly, throughout the night there were at least a few tables that were reserved that were empty the entire time we were there, but we had a good time at the bar nonetheless. The restaurant is situated right by the water in the Hafencity neighborhood, and with nearly full glass on two entire sides of the restaurant the views and the natural light are both wonderful. To start, we were brought out some crispy bread with a wonderful curry sauce. We also had their cocktail of the day, which was a twist on the traditional aperol spritz, as it was made with cassis and included a sprig of mint. It was one one of the most refreshing coktails I've ever had. For dinner, we all ordered the chef's sushi special. This seems to be a pretty popular option in sushi places, as in Hamburg I've seen it at least a couple times. It included a little bit of everything - sashimi, nigiri, and roll sushi. Within the assortment there were definitely some things I liked more and less, and its not the best quality fish I've ever had, but I would say overall it was very tasty, and I would recommend it. For dessert, we went on some sort of weird culinary journey. I have never seen stranger desserts. We ordered two, and both of them included many items that were unidentifiable and/or not usually considered for dessert (like cucumbers?). We had mixed opinions here. I really liked them both although at least one didn't really make me feel like "dessert" while the one with cucumber was wholly disliked by my other dining companions. It was definitely interesting to try once, but I don't know if I would repeat the adventure. I have to mention the service - I think our waiter may be one of the best waiters I've ever had in a restaurant. He was incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and basically approached his job like he was trying to sell us a Rolls Royce, not an appetizer. He definitely takes his job seriously in the best way possible. The bill came to about 220 EUR for 3 people including a bottle of wine, which is on the expensive side but fair for what we got. I would definitely return when looking for a top notch dinner in Hamburg.

Yelp
Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere. We had a mix of sushi rolls , salads, several plates for sharing and drinks. It was around sunset and the views of the water were wonderful. This, coupled with he music made for a wonderful evening.

Yelp
Great location with an amazing view on the Elbphilharmonie. The place is trendy, food is good, drinks are great and ambiance is very relaxed. Prices are slightly too high but definitely worth it.

Yelp
Pricey, but worth every penny! The menu is full of interesting Asian fusion options. Dishes executed to perfection with super fresh ingredients and great balance of flavors. The view of the Elbphilharmonie and cool wall of plants inside make for a memorable location. And the service is not only professional but also really funny.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good, but it's on the unhealthy side. I ordered the salmon sashimi to start and it was surprisingly good (especially for Germany). It was probably the best salmon sushi I've had here. The vegetable roll (with papaya inside and mango on top) was also delicious. I ordered the peanut chicken, but didn't realize it was deep fried and breaded, so I ended up giving that away (the sauce was good though). The fish with salsa wasn't anything special. I wouldn't recommend getting that. The service was good, but it was pretty pricey.

Yelp
Best sushi in Hamburg with a lot of famous people around you. Wine bar downstairs is definitely a plus! Sushi are always fresh, very delicious and good served. This one is a way better, then its sought er brunch in Majorca.

Yelp
Way to expensive and the service is not great and inflexible. No more words are required (and wasted) on this place. The location is nice, the view nothing to complain and the design is maybe a little cold but acceptable.

Yelp
Very very very very terrible food. Neither meat nor fish is good enough to eat. There is sand in their salad. A strange combination of Japanese food and Middle east food. Nothing better than food courts. Very expensive. Cannot really feel their service. Don't go. You can enjoy the same view from the free public terrace outside the restaurant with food of your own choice. Don't go ever. It is a waste of time.
