I had dinner here with a couple of colleagues on my last night in Hamburg. I had mentioned how much I love sushi and one of my coworkers very thoughtfully brought me over to Coast.
We made the mistake of not making reservations (necessary even on a Tuesday night!) and were basically told we could sit at the bar if we were interested in eating there. Sadly, throughout the night there were at least a few tables that were reserved that were empty the entire time we were there, but we had a good time at the bar nonetheless.
The restaurant is situated right by the water in the Hafencity neighborhood, and with nearly full glass on two entire sides of the restaurant the views and the natural light are both wonderful.
To start, we were brought out some crispy bread with a wonderful curry sauce. We also had their cocktail of the day, which was a twist on the traditional aperol spritz, as it was made with cassis and included a sprig of mint. It was one one of the most refreshing coktails I've ever had.
For dinner, we all ordered the chef's sushi special. This seems to be a pretty popular option in sushi places, as in Hamburg I've seen it at least a couple times. It included a little bit of everything - sashimi, nigiri, and roll sushi. Within the assortment there were definitely some things I liked more and less, and its not the best quality fish I've ever had, but I would say overall it was very tasty, and I would recommend it.
For dessert, we went on some sort of weird culinary journey. I have never seen stranger desserts. We ordered two, and both of them included many items that were unidentifiable and/or not usually considered for dessert (like cucumbers?). We had mixed opinions here. I really liked them both although at least one didn't really make me feel like "dessert" while the one with cucumber was wholly disliked by my other dining companions. It was definitely interesting to try once, but I don't know if I would repeat the adventure.
I have to mention the service - I think our waiter may be one of the best waiters I've ever had in a restaurant. He was incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and basically approached his job like he was trying to sell us a Rolls Royce, not an appetizer. He definitely takes his job seriously in the best way possible.
The bill came to about 220 EUR for 3 people including a bottle of wine, which is on the expensive side but fair for what we got. I would definitely return when looking for a top notch dinner in Hamburg.
