Where to Eat Oysters Along the Coast of Marin | Eater SF

"The tiny town of Bolinas pays plenty of attention to the vegan set, but oysters have not been forsaken. Grab a seat on the patio for grilled oysters with garlic butter or barbecue sauce, a plate of steamed clams, or, as needs must, vegan sesame-crusted tofu. The joint gets busy on weekends but live music on Thursdays and Sundays is a good reason to shift your weekend perspective." - Christina Mueller

15 Best Beachside Restaurants and Bars in Marin and Sonoma | Eater SF

"Casual and healthy with an emphasis on vegetables, seafood, and sustainably raised meats, this is pretty much the only eatery in town, so thank goodness it’s really just a fine place to eat. Set adjacent to the Bolinas Museum — a hidden treasure with a great exhibition roster and a shabby chic vibe that Martha would envy — this cheerful spot is perfect for a simple lunch or dinner and a lazy brunch." - Paolo Bicchieri

My husband found this spot and all I can say is he did an amazing job finding it because the food was great. We got there around noon and the outdoor patio was full, so we sat inside. I loved how as soon as we were done with a plate someone will come by and pick up the plate, which most places don't. The bathrooms were clean. The restaurant looked well taken care of inside. The calamari and crab tasted fresh and made me want more. They were not stingy on the clams for the pasta. I will definitely go out of my way to go back to this place again

Google
Awesome experience here with a delightful homemade cooking, with fresh and tasty ingredients. Meals quickly served by a lovely team. You'd miss something if you don't stop your trip there. Special congrat for the blackberry pie!

Google
Really cool place with great people, almost didn't take the turn off Hwy 1 but so glad we did. We had a great time chatting with the folks there and the food was great. Caesar salad was great and authentic, the calamari was amazing, and the grilled oysters with olive oil and garlic were delicious. Take the turn and check out the beautiful town! You won't regret it! Also, great outdoor seating but the inside is very cool as well. Edit: great wine and beer list as well!

Google
Came here on a Saturday morning, plenty of seating in the back patio. Vibe was peaceful, clean, relaxing. Host, server was very pleasant and professional. Food arrived was piping hot and fresh! So delicious! Would definitely come back to try another brunch item. We ordered the pork sandwich and clam chowder. Both were so good and perfect temperature when served!

Enjoyed my time, food and drinks here! Thank you <3

Google
From the time we sat down to the time we left... all the servers were very nice and attentive. The food was so flavorful. The calamari was small piece but it overfilled the plate. The fish and chip have some of the best seasons I ever had. Will definitely come back if I am in the area again.

Google
I’ve been going to Coast Cafe many times and the food is always good and fresh. They have one of the best Fish and Chips I’ve ever had. The service is also good. The staff is friendly and attentive. Must try when you are in Bolinas!

Google
This was an amazing meal, beautiful surroundings, kind staff, and a true farm to table ethos in all the dishes. The soup and the homemade pie were my favorites (great vegetarian options) Definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
Even though Bolinas doesn't have many restaurant options, the Coast Café has you covered! While their prices have gone up over the years, so has the quality of their cuisine. My friends and I were blown away by every dish, it was all absolutely delicious. And the highlight? Buffalo milk ice cream! I love buffalo milk ice cream and it is not super common. The best soft serve you'll ever have, hands down. I can't recommend it enough!

Yana H.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly staff, and fast service! Everything we ordered was super tasty and beautifully presented. The staff was kind and welcoming, and our food came out quickly. Great experience overall -- we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Omgosh delicious! The caesar salad is divine. You even get anchovies on top! The sourdough Bread is locally made and scrumptious! We also got the lamb with mashed potatoes and spinach and our cousin got the rock cod with root vegetables. She let me taste the cod and it was yummy and I dont like cod

Yelp
Really enjoyed the social atmosphere and live music here on a Saturday night. Some communal tables for those feeling chatty. Our waitress was so friendly and helped talk through some of the dishes with us. Fish was fresh and flavorful. Nonalcoholic beer options available!

Yelp
While staying in Bolinas we ate at the Coast Cafe and it was wonderful! The first night we had the calamari and blackberry pie. The calamari was lightly breaded and better than any I have had! The salad was fresh and crisp with creamy blue cheese crumbled. The pie was unbelievable! Not too sweet and the soft serve ice cream was a perfect addition. The 2nd night we ordered a combination pizza to go and it was delicious too! The service was fantastic and they were friendly, attentive! Loved the restaurant vibe!

Yelp
We had lunch at Coast Café very recently and everything was wonderful about the experience. I ordered the best fish tacos I have ever eaten. My sister-in-law ordered ceviche, and my son and husband split the fish and chips. All of these dishes were made with halibut caught that day. We all loved our food. The service was excellent, and the patio was warm and welcoming. Highly recommend the place.

Yelp
We spent the day at Stinson Beach on a Thursday because it was in the 90's at home. We decided to head to Bolinas around 4:00. We walked around until Coast Cafe opened. We sat on the back patio where is was a perfect temprature. We started with 24 oysters, they were fresh and delicious. Then we had the special of cod three ways. Smoked, our least favorite, miso, delicious and blackened, my favorite, it was silky and buttery. 5 stars. We had a caeser salad and the seafood pasta, which came out at the same time which was disapointing. We also had the garlic sourdough which was very good. The salad was ok, not the best or worst caeser I've had. The pasta had good flavor, although the house made pasta tasted raw. Candace was our server and she was outstanding. She was training another woman and she was nice as well.

Yelp
Everything here was so good!! The seafood was incredibly fresh! The oysters were very yummy, especially with their sauce. My tuna was cooked so well! The sauce was great with it. The tacos were delicious. The ribs were SO good! Fall off the bone! A bit pricey. Worth it though. Was incredibly surprised that the blue fin tuna filet was only $18! I didn't take pictures, but their buffalo milk soft serve was PHENOMENAL! Staff was very nice, pleasant, and attentive. The food came out pretty fast! They have outdoor seating, so it's dog friendly, which is a plus. The outside was relaxing and quiet. It's not too far from the beach. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here!

Lisa A.

Yelp
This place was a little pricey but everything is these days. I will tell you though I've had a lot of fried calamari and this place blew all the places away! It was perfect and so was the tartar sauce I asked for, but didn't come with it because they had some homemade spicy sauce I can eat. The fish and chips were bomb too, but WOW on the calamari!!! Sorry no pic, but it had the tentacles.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant located in the heart of Bolinas! I dined here last month with three friends as we were staying at Steep Ravine Cabins and wanted to treat ourselves to a lovely dinner. Our server, Nina, was very attentive and gave great recommendations. I took treat yo'self to the extreme (as I often do) and started with the Steamed Clams which were served with the most delectable garlic butter sauce and toast. I am not going to lie, I was pretty full after the fresh clams but ordered the hamburger as well, served medium rare with coleslaw and chipotle aioli. I know the food was really, really good because even though I was full, I finished it! I really enjoyed the live music (accordion) and fireplace(s) inside the restaurant. I'd recommend Coastal Cafe - enjoy!

Yelp
This little coastal town is busy on the weekends, parking was difficult to find. We sat outside in the back garden, it was a lovely day for it. We shared Drake's oyster, local sourced was very good.  We ordered grilled option with butter and garlic. I also had the Red Pork Pozole soup, it had the perfect portion of hominy to pork.  We add the lime, shredded cabbage, and chips. It was a delightful lunch.

Yelp
The food was great. The service was over the top friendly. The interior was warm and inviting. We will definitely be back

Yelp
Very pleasant cafe, a fine place to have lunch if you're in the area (and know how to get to Bolinas, as there's no directional sign on the highway. It was liberated by the natives years ago, and is now hung like a trophy head above the bar in this very restaurant). There's plenty of patio tables outside for a clement day, and though I couldn't understand a word that the guy said who was describing the daily specials, the service was very friendly, courteous, and efficient. I had a cup of soup and a half salad. The soup was clam chowder, medium thickness, fairly good, accompanied by charred slices of sourdough bread, which I really appreciated. The salad was Caesar, good cuts of romaine, plenty of grated cheese on top and one whole anchovy fillet, which I cut up with a knife and mixed in. As a light lunch, memorable and ideal.

Yelp
First time here. I surf in Bolinas on a regular basis but had never been here. We usually go to Bovida. Anyway, we have been missing out. I had a bowl of their turkey chili which is a very hearty (many ingredients) chili covered with cheese. It is not spicy hot which I prefer. My dining partner had the burger and side of the garlic bread. I tried her burger and it was spot on. I would order that and the chili again. As for the garlic bread, there was one or two pieces out of 8 that weren't toasted too much (meaning that they were too hard to bite comfortably). If we had been relying on the bread to feed ourselves, we probably would've sent the bread back for another try. Overall, we had a positive experience here and would return. NOTE: The black metal chairs outside are very uncomfortable. We had started out outside but moved inside because the chairs were so bad. Also, in the summer, the wasps are out in force and that can be really annoying.

Yelp
This place lives up to its great reviews. Food is great, wonderful beer and wine selection, and a super cute little patio! Nice staff too. The biggest challenge with eating here is getting parking. We tried to get in here on Saturday at 9:15am and there was NO parking available. We came back Sunday at 8am and lucked out with a spot right in front. Nothing they can do about parking! Now you know. No idea how people make it in here to eat after 9am on a weekend! Really, next time I'm coming to Bolinas, I'll park my car near a bus stop and take the public transit into town. Parking is impossible, but it's a tiny little town. Whatcha gonna do? Take public transit into town!

Yelp
Hard to believe I never reviewed the Coast Cafe, not that I write reviews much anymore but I thought "back in the day" I surely would have. There are a lot of things to like about the Coast Cafe, my favorite place to sit is outside and in front of the restaurant, although the tucked away patio seating is lovely too. I didn't realize until recently that there is a pastry case inside with house made baked goods and I'm not sure that I should let the secret out on this public platform but they make the most amazing bran muffins on the planet. And it's hard to get excited about a bran muffin I know, they're usually like flavorless hockey pucks. Yesterday I asked at the cafe what made these muffins so special and I was told "endless love and magic". Also yesterday they had fresh caught blue fin tuna served up in a variety of ways and it was AMAZING the way I had it, seared w/a sesame see crust. Melt in your mouth incredible.

Edith G.

Yelp
I started with a side salad. I had the burger for the entree. Greg had the clam chowder, duck and pasta for his entree. We were both very pleased with our choice. Pretty amazing! We shared a soft swirl ice cream. Worth a try.

Yelp
I never do this, but need people to know this is not a safe place for all kinds. Received the worst service of my life last night - there was none. I was completely ignored, had to go inside and find someone to order each time. Overcharged me for drinks I didn't get. And the food was bland. I also could tell the shrimp was not deveined and I ended up getting sick after eating the seafood pasta. Be warned!

David W.

Yelp
To start with, the place was incredibly noisy and that was unpleasant. There was a door open and the room abounded with flies. We had to keep whisking them off of our food. My daughter had a seafood pasta, which she enjoyed very much. At the end of the meal I dunked some bread into the pasta sauce and it was very tasty. I had the cod with vegetables. The cod was very good, and properly cooked. It was accompanied by vegetables that were so lightly grilled they might be considered raw. All of it sat in a sauce that tasted like watered-down tomato soup. It was very disappointing. The wait staff was very attentive and pleasant.

Yelp
Both of us ordered chowder and bread for lunch, as well as a crisp apple cider each. Service was welcoming and friendly and our food arrived quickly. It was a blustery day and the soup was very warming at our outdoor table. We will definitely be back - there aren't too many places to choose from in Bolinas :)

Yelp
Fish & Chips. SALMON fish & chips. MIND BLOWN. The fish was so fresh as if they have the ocean in their kitchen. I imagined they caught the fish right after we ordered, cleaned, and cooked it right away after the fish was caught! Then it was served to us! Freakin' amazing. And I hate using the word amazing in my reviews, but it was so fresh it caught me off guard. The batter was crispy and perfect. Heck, the whole thing was perfect. 5 stars. And I'm glad after we hiked up to see a nice view of the beach, the fish and chips were still crunchy. Freakin' amazing! The tacos we had after that was not so exciting. I bet the steak tacos were better if I started with that first. But after the salmon, we were wishing for more salmon fish & chips. We should have ordered three! I wish I didn't have to share!!! Yes. Fish & Chips. That is all I have to say. Oh, and service was a-okay!
google avatar

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
So good I forgot to take a picture. Originally we had planned to go to a different restaurant that ended up being closed. We came here because the food looked amazing and they had a dog friendly patio. We had just finished up a hike a couple of miles away and we're starving. I'm a vegetarian and was excited to see that there were so many options for me on the menu. They even have a vegan soup of the day! Love love love! We were seated immediately and had our choice of tables. The service was excellent and our needs were anticipated and delivered upon! It's such a cute place and the food presentation is excellent. Now let's talk about the scrumptious part! I had the quinoa patty and a side of the vegan soup. I shared my grain/veggie patty with my dog because he also was in love! The bun was the best tasting bun I've ever tasted. Needless to say there was nothing left on my plate!

Yelp
This looks like the only place to eat at Bolinas Beach. We had the steamed clams (3 star) and a grilled chicken sandwich (4 star). The place was crowded by the time we left on a weekday lunch so it must be the decent place.
google avatar

Martin H.

Yelp
Update your website when you are closed for Winter Vacation so potential customers don't drive 30 minutes to find you are not open as all online sites indicate.

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place is great. My favorite in the entire area. I highly recommend the ribeye! Cooked to perfection.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Sunday night and enjoyed their fresh and local seafood : the crab pasta dish was great and the chilipepper rockfish was excellent !!!!

Steven H.

Yelp
After spending time in nature, we visited this restaurant and it looked nice with both outdoor and indoor seating. Parking is limited around the area, be prepared to park further down the road. We were seated quickly and the server took our order. We got the grilled chicken sandwich and fish and chips. The portion sizes were decent but the taste did not meet our expectations. Both the chicken sandwich and cod fish and chips were dry. In addition, we ordered a sweet tea and the server forgot about it. Overall it filled us up and was decently pricy but the quality was not what we expected.

Robin B.

Yelp
This is a great community restaurant in Bolinas. The food is consistently good, they have a very nice wine list, and the people who run it are lovely. British friends tell us that the fish and chips are better than back home.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this restaurant through Yelp and I am so glad we went! Adorable little hidden town off of HWY 1. Unmarked turn, definitely use gps. Ambience was so cozy, reminded me of a little pub in Ireland. Seemed like mostly locals. Food was delicious!!! The burger was one of the best I've ever had.My husband got the fish and chips with local Halibut. We shared blackberry pie for dessert which was aaaamaazzzzing! Nice wine list and great service. Will be back next time we are in the area.

Nicole K.

Yelp
Had a great pre beach brunch here. I loved the authentic norcal vibe and the fresh cuisine. Service was great.

Yelp
This spot is awesome. We had a very particular order full of additions, plating, etc etc. They met every one of the requests. The food was packaged nicely and with care. The bachelor at the bachelor party was very impressed. I would highly recommend for a sunset wine night or a beer with oysters

Richard E.

Yelp
Great menu snd wine list. You won't be disappointed even after the long drive over the hill.
google avatar

Samuel W.

Yelp
The vibes are great. I visited around 2 on a weekday afternoon. Nonexistent wait, light speed service. Had some monster tacos that hit the spot - everything is fresh and cooked skillfully. We were THIS close to a perfect experience and then I got a beer mug with bright pink lipstick marks all over it. I've never worn lipstick in my life. There's no way it was me. I used to BE a dishwasher for a short time so I get really anal about clean wares, and I question if it ever got cleaned at all. I loved how urgently and kindly the staff addressed my complaint. New mug was brought out full of new tasty Anchor Steam. I'd definitely come back and recommend it to anyone, so long as they check the glassware when it hits the table.

Yelp
What a great surprise in Bolinas. Thank you! Fellow yelpers, for the reviews and making researching a place to try after a hike in Palomares, much easier. Bolinas is a small coastal town, so be aware, parking can be challenging, especially on the weekends. After a long hike, I was looking forward to trying the Drakes bay oysters, definitely wasn't disappointed! Very similar in size and flavor of one of my favorites, Tomales bay sweetwaters, maybe just a little meatier, flavorful, not needing any extra flavorings. Delicious! If you love oysters, ya gotta try this place. I also ordered a cup of clam chowder, very tasty, lots of clams and flavor, great to dip the bread that comes with it. Although, this was plenty this time, it was very tempting to try their fresh caught salmon burger, which was the special today. Very extensive brunch menu, something for anyone to try. Service was great, along with asking how everything was, my glass was never empty, before asking, if I wanted another. If you're in the area, be it hiking or enjoying a drive by the coast, definitely stop in a give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. Happy yelping, God bless, and cheers!

Heather G.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the service was great. The bar had a nice ambiance and even though there was live music it did not interfere with my family's ability to have a nice meal. It may have been the only choice in town but we would definitely return. It was pricy, but in line with similar bars and restaurants in the area.
google avatar

Jolie B.

Yelp
I just don't understand the positive reviews. This place is a big no! Save for one person on the waitstaff, the service and food are lacking. Also, they should pay more attention to cleanliness. The food and service can be lousy, as it is here, but cleanliness is sacrosanct. Just say "no" to this place.
google avatar

Alison E.

Yelp
Awesome service. Outrageously delicious food. And the warm patio and music by the amazingly talented DANA made it super special. I hope they bring her back often! And such good food and our waiter was fantastic. The sesame crusted curry oh my god... and the seafood pasta. This place is awesome!!!
google avatar

Orangen B.

Yelp
Good food but taking two stars off for hostess and wait time. We almost left this joint because it took 15-20 minutes to get a table and the hostess did not acknowledge us. The line wasn't that long and I'm not sure why it took so long to seat us when there seemed to be a good amount of tables. When I asked her how much longer it would be, she replied, "I haven't gotten to you yet." This is not the proper way to treat customers. My friends and I were miffed and considered leaving. Once seated, we got a great server (blond-haired fellow who could remember everything without writing anything down) and wait staff. Food came in a timely manner and it was tasty - nothing mind-blowing but it was good. We got good portions for the price and had nothing to complain about. Parking can be tight but we weren't expecting anything otherwise in the area. There aren't many places to eat so if you're in the area check it out. My friends enjoyed this place after we got seated. I personally would not go back because I don't like waiting, especially when we have no idea when there is going to availability. Communication is key with customers and I did not get that.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Terrible service and food. We asked for taste of wine glass never came. We ordered burger and no cheese? What the hell? I asked the waiter and she said we should have ordered it. The clam chowder has no flavor. The egg and fish Benedict was great. The burger was okay, but the fries came out cold. The sweet young girl who was bussing the table was the only one working hard. The Spanish waiter with tattoo on her legs needs serious training.

Aisha M.

Yelp
Blatant discrimination towards patrons by the owner is unacceptable. Recently heard about an incident from an acquaintance who went here while on her honeymoon and was told not to take pictures by the owner. She was targeted and singled out despite the rule not being clearly posted or applying to other patrons also taking photos. Heavily biased. Owner needs diversity training. Disappointing to hear that though our money is just as green as others, there's still those who chose to treat minorities differently due to their own inherent bias and faux superiority complexes.

Yelp
My cousin recommended this place for the fresh, catch of the day fish and chips. We got in around 1:30 on a perfect Friday afternoon. The patio is dog friendly and we were quickly seated. They had a good, informative wine menu with lots of options, much of them from sustainable vineyards. I picked out a dry riesling from Pacific Rim in Washington. It turned out to work well with the fish and chips as well as the cheese plate. The day's catch was salmon, so I ordered that. My wife had bad luck with salmon fish and chips at another place, so chose the cheese plate. We also ordered oysters with garlic and butter. Starting with oysters, they were delicious, fresh, and came right out of the shell. The cheese plate included four local cheeses, honeycomb, apricot compote, strawberries, blueberries, and toasted crackers. The Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery was the best and most versatile. The salmon and chips was perfect. The batter was crispy, and the fish was moist. It was obvislously fresh. There were three big pieces to make a generous portion. The coleslaw was decent, same for the chips. The tartar sauce had a hint of paprika, a good addition for the salmon. It was a big hit with my wife. The one warning about this place is that it is cash only. It can really add up fast. We might have ordered more but I wanted to reserve some of our cash, and I won't pay for an expensive ATM because the owner refuses to find a good merchant services company.

Yelp
Been here 5 minutes and few like an old friend visiting already! Nice, friendly host and prompt service, bathroom are great too!

Yelp
We stopped by here on our trip to Bolinas and wanted to eat at a locally sourced restaurant. It did not disappoint! So glad we caught the end of Dungeness crab season because it was absolutely the best. We got to sit outside and listen to live music, which was a big plus too. Honestly very perplexed as to why their rating is 3.5 on average, this place rocks.

Yelp
You're at the beach, West Marin, Bolinas, dropout capital in the laid back state of California. You came here to get away, get off the grid. Yet you still want top quality expert service in a restaurant? Hello! Wake up! Get real! Be grateful you found this place with heavenly homemade food and dogs on the patio. Stay for hours, tip very well and get over yourself. This is GREAT!!!

Chris T.

Yelp
Bad male blonde server gave us the worst experience ive ever had at a restaurant. He wasnt our server but kept interrupting our incredible young female server by insulting our table. I have never, ever had to tell someone "STOP TALKING" in my life. What a jerk. We left. I visit my mother, a bolinas local, several times a year. She admitted that the same man has been rude to her on several occasions. I will never go back. Thank god for Smiley's serving food now.
google avatar

Hayoung Y.

Yelp
Oh man, this place. We were staying in Bolinas for the night, and when I heard there was basically only one restaurant in town, I had very little expectations. Thought I'd be eating some mediocre sandwich or something to fill my stomach for the night. Man was I wrong. Everything I got there was so delicious and had such great quality ingredients. Sitting outdoors with the warm heater and live outdoor music from the hotel in front definitely heightened the experience as well. Very nice and accommodating waitresses. Would highly recommend.

Chloe S.

Yelp
No one can deny the food here is great. What's not so great is the treatment of the patrons by the owner. We watched a young black woman get told to stop taking pictures inside the restaurant by the owner, when there are absolutely no signs saying it's not allowed. Later on, when the place got more crowded, there were several people taking pictures of the woman singing and the owner had nothing to say to them. Disappointing to see from an establishment that we enjoy, but if you're going to have a policy, it has to be clearly stated and it has to be the same policy for everyone. Not just some.
